Set the maximum clan size by changing the numeric ClanSize entry in ServerGameSettings.json, then restart the server. On a Windows server you normally place the edited file in Stunlock Studios’ local override Settings folder; on a rented server, the same value is usually available in the host’s V Rising game-settings panel. If the game still shows the old limit, the usual causes are an incorrect file path, invalid JSON, a preset overriding the file, or a restart that did not actually reload the settings.

The setting you need
V Rising separates server configuration into two principal files. ServerHostSettings.json controls host and server-start behavior, while ServerGameSettings.json contains gameplay rules. Maximum clan membership is a gameplay rule, so it belongs in ServerGameSettings.json, not the host-settings file.

How V Rising chooses the settings file
A dedicated server starts with the default files under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/. Stunlock Studios’ dedicated-server instructions recommend keeping your custom values in the local override directory on Windows:

Editing only the copy in the installation’s StreamingAssets/Settings directory can therefore appear to do nothing, especially after an update restores or replaces default files.

The active launch command or service definition is the authority in that situation; use it to identify the real Settings directory before editing.
Set the clan size on a self-hosted Windows server
1. Stop the server before editing
Stop the dedicated-server process or use the stop action in the service wrapper that runs it. Editing while the process is running risks having the server overwrite your change when it shuts down, and a running process will not normally reread the file until it is restarted.
2. Open the active local override folder
- Sign in to the Windows account that runs the V Rising server.
- Open File Explorer and paste
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettingsinto the address bar. - If you configured
-persistentDataPath, follow that custom path instead and open itsSettingssubfolder. - Look for
ServerGameSettings.json. If it does not exist in the override folder, copy the server’s settings template there or create a new file containing the setting you need.
The important distinction is that the file in the active override directory is the one you intend to customize. The installation default is a reference, not the preferred place for persistent custom settings.
3. Add or edit ClanSize
Open ServerGameSettings.json in a plain-text editor. Find an existing ClanSize line and replace only its number. If no such line exists, add it inside the outer braces, preserving commas between neighboring properties.

}Do not add comments, trailing commas, smart quotation marks, or duplicated keys. Save as ordinary UTF-8 text with the exact filename ServerGameSettings.json. A misspelled filename, such as ServerGameSetting.json, will not be loaded as the game-settings file.
4. Start the server and reconnect
- Save the file and close the editor.
- Start the dedicated server again.
- Wait for it to finish loading, then connect with a client.
- Check the clan-creation or clan-management screen and invite enough players to test the new ceiling.
A restart is part of the configuration change, not an optional cleanup step. If you use a script, scheduled task, or service manager, confirm that it restarted the same server instance whose persistent-data path you edited.
Change the value on a rented server
Managed hosts generally expose the contents of ServerGameSettings.json through a web control panel, so you do not need direct access to the server’s Windows folders. The labels differ by provider, but look for a V Rising game-settings, gameplay-settings, or configuration page and an option named ClanSize.
GPORTAL control panel
- Sign in to the GPORTAL account.
- Open My servers.
- Select the V Rising server.
- Open Basic settings.
- Find
ClanSize, choose the desired value, and save. - Use the panel’s restart action, then reconnect after the server is online.
GPORTAL documents a selectable range from 1 through 10 in its interface. That is the range exposed by that provider’s current panel, not a guarantee that every V Rising release or host uses the same upper limit.
Other hosting panels
Some providers present the same option under a page called V Rising Game Settings. Shockbyte, for example, documents editing the maximum clan size through its V Rising game-settings workflow. Select the game-settings page rather than a general startup or host-settings page, change the clan-size field, save, and perform the host’s restart action.

When the panel writes a preset
A panel may save a preset that is applied at startup instead of exposing the raw JSON file. If your value reverts after every restart, inspect the preset or configuration profile assigned to the server. The effective value is the one supplied last in the host’s configuration chain, so a preset can override a manual file edit.
Choosing a supported number
Use an integer accepted by the active game build or by the hosting panel. There is no single range that should be promised for every V Rising version and every provider. The documented GPORTAL interface allows 1–10, while older community configurations and other hosts may expose different ceilings.
- Use the panel’s displayed minimum and maximum when renting a server.
- For a self-hosted server, start with a conservative integer and verify it in-game after a restart.
- Do not assume that a value accepted by one release will remain accepted after an update.
- Keep a copy of the previous working value so you can restore it if the server rejects the configuration.
Changing the number does not merge existing clans or automatically move players between clans. It changes the maximum membership allowed for a clan on that server; invitations and clan administration still follow the game’s normal rules.
What a larger clan limit changes
ClanSize controls the maximum number of players who can belong to one clan. A higher value lets a larger group share clan progression, territory-related activity, storage access, and other systems that V Rising associates with clan membership. The setting matters to both PvE groups coordinating building and progression and PvP groups that organize defense, raids, and territory control.
The setting is server-wide. It is not a per-player preference and cannot be changed from an ordinary client while connected. Every player joining that server encounters the same configured ceiling, subject to the value actually loaded at startup.
Troubleshoot a clan that still stops at the old limit
Check the key and data type
Open the file that you believe is active and verify the key character by character: ClanSize, with a capital C and capital S. The value must be an unquoted JSON number, such as "ClanSize": 5. Remove duplicate entries; duplicate JSON keys can produce unpredictable results depending on the parser, and a later occurrence may hide the one you edited.

Check that the JSON is valid
One missing comma or brace can cause the server to ignore the file or fall back to defaults. Compare the surrounding punctuation with a known-valid JSON example. Make sure the file contains no editor comments, no trailing comma before a closing brace, and no typographic quotation marks introduced by a word processor. If the server writes an error to its log at startup, correct the syntax before testing the clan screen again.
Check the path, not just the contents
Confirm that you edited the local override directory used by the running server. Editing VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ServerGameSettings.json alone may not affect a server that is loading an override from %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettings. A custom -persistentDataPath changes this location, so inspect the actual launch command if the standard folder is empty or inactive.
Look for a preset or override
If the file is valid and in the expected folder but the displayed limit remains unchanged, identify every configuration layer applied by the host. Stunlock Studios’ issue-tracker discussions include cases where editing ServerGameSettings.json did not change the displayed clan size because a preset or another override supplied the effective value. On a rented server, check the assigned profile, preset, or advanced-settings page; on a self-hosted server, inspect startup scripts and any automation that copies settings at launch.

Perform a real restart
Saving a web form is not always the same as restarting the game server. Use the provider’s stop/start or restart control and wait for the server to come back online. For a self-hosted process, terminate the old process and launch it again. Reconnect only after the new process has completed startup; a client that stayed connected to the old process cannot display the new configuration.
Verify the server and save you actually joined
Multiple V Rising instances, test servers, and transferred worlds can make a correct edit appear ineffective. Check the server address and port, the process command line, and the persistent-data path. If you moved a save from a client-hosted game, verify that the dedicated server is using the transferred save directory and the same persistent-data root where you placed the settings file. Editing a different instance’s configuration will not change the world you joined.
Reduce the change to a controlled test
For diagnosis, choose a modest value that is clearly different from the old limit, restart, and test with a small group. Once the server accepts the change, stop it and set the final value. This separates a loading problem from an invitation or account problem without requiring you to change several settings at once.

Choose the approach based on how much configuration visibility you need. File access is useful when diagnosing persistent-data and override issues; a control panel is faster when it exposes the exact gameplay field and handles restarts for you.

A transferred save contains world data, but the dedicated server still has its own configuration location. Before changing the clan limit, map the relationship between the save directory and the server’s persistent-data root:
- Identify the persistent-data path in the dedicated-server launch command.
- Locate the corresponding
Settingsand save directories beneath that root. - Place or edit
ServerGameSettings.jsonin that root’s active settings location. - Confirm that the transferred save is stored under the same persistent-data root used by the running process.
- Restart the server and test the clan limit in that transferred world.
This prevents a common split-brain setup in which the server loads one world but reads settings from a different installation or user profile.

- The file is named

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the clan size while players are online?
Make the change with the server stopped, then restart it before testing. A running server normally keeps its loaded settings until the next launch, and stopping first prevents the process from overwriting your edit.
Does changing ClanSize create a new clan or move players automatically?
No. It changes the server-wide membership ceiling. Existing clan administration, invitations, and player membership remain governed by the game’s normal rules.

Why is my rented server limited to a smaller number than another server?
Hosting panels can expose different ranges, and supported limits can vary by game version or provider. Use the range shown by the active panel or build rather than assuming another host’s ceiling applies.
