For a stereo 24/7 YouTube radio stream, set audio to 128 Kbps, use 44.1 kHz sample rate and constant bitrate (CBR). For 5.1 surround, YouTube recommends 384 Kbps audio and a 48 kHz sample rate. These are audio settings, separate from the video bitrate.

YouTube lists these as recommended advanced live encoder settings on its live encoder settings help page (undated; accessed 2026). For a typical radio stream mixed in stereo, choose 128 Kbps; do not raise it to the 5.1 recommendation unless your program is actually encoded as 5.1 surround.

The audio bitrate is not the stream’s total bitrate. If your stream also includes video, its video bitrate is additional and should be configured separately.
Set the encoder for stereo audio
- Choose the audio codec. For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube supports AAC or MP3. Select one supported by your encoder and streaming workflow.
- Set audio bitrate to 128 Kbps. Ensure this value is the audio encoder’s bitrate, not the combined audio-and-video bitrate.
- Set sample rate to 44.1 kHz. This is YouTube’s recommended stereo sample rate.
- Set rate control to CBR. YouTube directs live encoders to use constant bitrate encoding.
- Apply the settings to the stream output. Encoder menus vary, so look in the stream’s audio output or encoder settings rather than assuming a particular menu name or path.
If you are sending 5.1 surround instead, use the 5.1 recommendations in the table and verify that the entire audio chain is configured for surround; a stereo source does not become 5.1 merely by selecting a higher bitrate.

Connect the encoder to YouTube and check stream health
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s streaming destination fields. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
- Run an upload-speed test before broadcasting. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate, including video if present—not just the 128 Kbps audio component. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. While it runs, monitor YouTube’s stream health and any encoder or Live Control Room warnings; a successful connection alone does not confirm clean audio.
YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. That viewer-side transcoding does not change the encoder’s recommended stereo audio setting.
RTMP/RTMPS or HLS audio
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC or MP3. For HLS ingest, its supported audio codecs are AAC, AC3 and EAC3. YouTube lists the same recommended audio bitrate and sample-rate values for HLS: 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo, or 384 Kbps and 48 kHz for 5.1. What changes when the stream runs 24/7
YouTube’s cited encoder guidance does not specify a different audio bitrate for continuous broadcasts. Keep the stereo setting at 128 Kbps. The main operational difference is what happens to the archive and rewind: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams over 12 hours. - If viewers need to rewind or use DVR, account for the possibility that it will be limited or unavailable on a stream longer than 12 hours.
- Plan the broadcast and recording workflow around those limits independently of audio bitrate.
Troubleshooting audio and connection problems
- Audio sounds distorted or cuts out: confirm that the encoder is actually using the intended supported codec, bitrate and sample rate. Check the encoder and YouTube stream-health messages while testing.
- Stream health is unstable: test the upload connection and ensure the total outgoing bitrate has YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Include video bitrate in that total if the stream has video.
- Audio settings do not match the program: use the stereo values for stereo radio; use the 5.1 values only for a 5.1 broadcast. Check the encoder output settings rather than changing the video bitrate to solve an audio configuration issue.
- The stream is live but no dependable archive appears: a run longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local archive rather than relying on YouTube’s recording.
- Viewers cannot rewind reliably: DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams exceeding 12 hours; bitrate changes do not address this limitation.
