Set the loss budget before you enter, then work backward to the position size and stop price. A stop belongs where your trade thesis is no longer valid—not at an arbitrary 1% or 2% distance. The stop price is only a trigger: a stop order becomes a market order and can fill materially away from that price, while a stop-limit can fail to fill. Volatile crypto requires smaller size, extra attention to liquidity and leverage, and venue-specific checks.
Start with a loss budget, not a stop-loss percentage
Choose the maximum dollar loss you can accept on the position before placing an entry order. Set a separate portfolio limit for all open positions. Regulators do not prescribe a universal “1% rule” or “2% rule”; any percentage you adopt is a planning choice that must fit your account, strategy and ability to withstand a losing streak.

Use the position-sizing formula
Once you know the entry and the price that invalidates the thesis, calculate size from the risk budget:

For a long position, the difference is positive. For a short position, use the absolute difference between the entry and stop. Round down to a tradable whole share or the exchange’s permitted crypto increment. Reserve room for commissions, funding, spread and slippage; the formula is an estimate, not a guarantee of the final loss.
Illustrative stock calculation
Suppose you plan to buy a stock at $50 and your thesis fails below $47.50. The planned risk is $2.50 per share. With a maximum position loss of $250, the calculation is $250 ÷ $2.50 = 100 shares. The position’s notional value is $5,000. A gap or thin order book can make the realized loss larger than $250, so a cautious plan would either reduce the share count or keep a slippage reserve.
Illustrative crypto calculation
If a token is entered at $2,000 and the invalidation level is $1,880, the planned risk is $120 per token. A $250 loss budget produces $250 ÷ $120 = 2.0833 tokens; rounding down to 2.08 tokens gives a $249.60 planned loss before fees and slippage. If the stop would require more size than your budget allows, reduce the position or skip the trade. Do not add leverage to force the desired notional value.
Choose a stop level that invalidates the trade
Separate thesis risk from ordinary noise
Write down why you entered and the observable condition that proves the idea wrong. For a long stock, that might be a break below a support area; for a short, a move above the level that invalidates the bearish setup. Place the stop beyond that condition, with enough distance for the instrument’s normal fluctuations and the available liquidity. A stop inside routine noise can be triggered even though the thesis has not changed.

The SEC warns that short-term fluctuations can activate a stop and that execution may differ significantly from the stop price. Its Investor Bulletin states: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” The bulletin was updated August 18, 2026: SEC Investor Bulletin on stop orders.
Account for liquidity
Liquid instruments usually have tighter spreads and more orders near the market, but liquidity can disappear during news, a halt, an exchange outage or a sudden crypto sell-off. A technically sensible level is still exposed to a larger fill difference when few buyers or sellers remain. Check typical volume, spread and the order book at the venue where your order will rest.
Do not move the stop farther to avoid a loss
Widening a stop after entry changes the original risk calculation and can turn a defined loss into an open-ended one. If the trade needs more room than your budget permits, reduce size before entry or do not take the position. A stop may be tightened or trailed under a written rule, but it should not be moved farther simply because price is approaching it.
Understand the three main stop order types
| Order type | What happens at the trigger | Execution certainty | Price control and slippage | Non-execution risk | Best use and main hazard |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stop (stop-market) | The order activates as a market order. | Usually the highest chance of an exit while trading is available. | No minimum or maximum fill price; the execution can be worse than the stop, especially in a fast or thin market. | The order can remain unfilled during a halt, outage or lack of executable bids or offers. | Useful when exiting matters more than price precision; vulnerable to gaps and slippage. |
| Stop-limit | The trigger activates a limit order at the limit price you specify. | Lower than a stop-market because price must reach the limit. | Sets the worst acceptable price, so it limits slippage if filled. | High when price moves through the limit; the position can remain open while losses grow. | Useful when price control is essential and liquidity is reliable; dangerous as the only protection in a gap or fast market. |
| Trailing stop | The stop follows a favorable move by a fixed dollar amount or percentage, then triggers when price reverses by that trail. | Similar to the underlying stop type used by the venue; it is not guaranteed. | The trail adjusts in the favorable direction only. A reversal can still produce a fill away from the displayed stop. | Possible during normal volatility, gaps, halts or a venue interruption. | Useful for protecting gains under a predefined rule; a tight trail can exit a sound position during ordinary noise. |
Firms differ in which order types they offer, how they calculate a trigger, whether the trigger uses the last trade, bid, ask or another reference, and how they handle fractional quantities. Read the firm or exchange’s order-policy page before relying on a stop.

Place and verify a stop step by step
- Define the trade. Record entry price, direction, thesis, invalidation level, allowed dollar loss and the maximum portfolio exposure you will permit.
- Check the market’s behavior. Review recent volatility, spread, normal trading volume, scheduled events, trading hours and the possibility of a gap or halt. For crypto, include overnight and weekend moves because the market generally trades continuously.
- Calculate size. Divide the loss budget by the entry-to-stop distance, round down, and include a reserve for fees, spread and slippage. Recalculate if the entry or stop changes.
- Select the order type. Use a stop-market when an exit is the priority and you accept an uncertain fill. Use a stop-limit only when you understand that it may not execute. Use a trailing stop only when the trail distance matches the instrument’s normal movement and your written plan.
- Read the venue’s trigger rules. Confirm the reference price, regular versus extended-hours behavior, time-in-force, partial-fill handling, minimum tick or quantity, and treatment during halts, maintenance or abnormal conditions.
- Submit and inspect the confirmation. Verify side, quantity, trigger price, limit price if applicable, trail amount or percentage, expiration and account. Make sure the status is accepted and working rather than merely saved as a draft.
- Recheck after meaningful changes. If you add, partially close or transfer a position, recalculate the remaining risk. If price moves favorably, tighten or trail only according to the rule you wrote before entry; do not improvise a wider stop.
- Document the result. Record trigger conditions, expected versus actual fill, spread, slippage and whether the thesis—not fear or hope—caused the exit. Use that record to adjust future size and stop distance.
How stocks and crypto differ for stop planning
| Risk factor | Stocks | Crypto |
|---|---|---|
| Liquidity | Large listed issues may have deep liquidity; small issues can become thin around news or outside the main session. | Varies sharply by token and venue; spreads and available depth can change quickly. |
| Trading hours | Exchange sessions are scheduled, with some brokers offering extended hours under separate rules. | Many venues operate 24/7, although maintenance, outages and venue-specific pauses still occur. |
| Gap risk | Overnight or weekend news can create an opening price far beyond a stop. | There is no universal daily close, but abrupt jumps, liquidations and outages can still skip prices. |
| Venue rules | Broker and exchange rules govern triggers, sessions, halts and order eligibility. | Each exchange sets its own trigger reference, maintenance schedule, liquidation rules and supported order types. |
| Leverage | Margin and leveraged products can magnify losses and may trigger forced liquidation before a planned stop. | Spot, margin and perpetual or futures products can all have different leverage and liquidation mechanics; a stop may not protect against a liquidation event. |
| Portfolio correlation | Stocks can become highly correlated during a broad market sell-off, even when companies differ. | Many tokens can move together with major crypto assets or broader risk markets, so several apparently separate positions may share one risk factor. |
The CFTC describes crypto assets as having value “completely derived by market forces of supply and demand” and as more volatile than traditional fiat currencies. It also warns that volatility amplifies profits and losses in margined futures contracts. Treat the same nominal position size as potentially riskier in crypto than in a diversified stock holding.
Set portfolio-level limits as well as trade stops
Cap correlated exposure
Add the planned loss of positions that are likely to move together. Three tokens, or several technology stocks, may each pass an individual stop test while creating an unacceptable combined loss. Define a maximum dollar loss for the group or theme, then reduce or reject new trades when the cap is reached.
Set an aggregate daily and weekly loss limit
Choose a dollar limit for realized and, if appropriate, open losses over a trading day and week. When the limit is reached, pause new trades until the next review period. This is an implementation choice for your plan, not a regulator-mandated percentage. Include losses from forced liquidation, funding, fees and slippage when they affect the account’s actual equity.

Calculate the loss on the leveraged exposure, not merely the cash or margin posted. A stop can be skipped, rejected or filled after a liquidation threshold has been reached. Stress-test the whole book
Before entering, ask what happens if every related position reaches its stop during the same fast move. Test a gap through each stop, a spread that doubles, and a venue interruption. The purpose is to find a portfolio loss that you can actually tolerate, not to predict the next price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to recheck when markets or venues change
Order behavior is not identical across firms. FINRA Regulatory Notice 21-12 says firms should provide information about volatile market conditions when customers select a stop order type and stop price. Re-read the current order disclosure when a broker changes its interface, when you move to a new exchange, or when trading conditions become abnormal.
- Confirm whether triggers use last trade, bid, ask, mark or another reference.
- Check whether stops work during extended stock sessions, overnight periods, halts and reopening auctions.
- For crypto, check maintenance windows, insurance or liquidation procedures, and whether a stop is held on the venue or in a separate risk system.
- Verify that a canceled, rejected or partially filled order has not left an unintended position without protection.
- Review the maximum order size, price bands and minimum increments after a token migration, stock split or contract rollover.
Common stop-loss failures and practical fixes
The stop triggers almost immediately
Likely cause: The level sits inside ordinary volatility, the spread touched the trigger, or the trigger reference differs from the price you were watching. Fix: Place the invalidation level beyond normal noise, verify the venue’s trigger reference, and reduce size so the wider, thesis-based stop still fits the loss budget.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe stop-limit never fills
Likely cause: Price moved through the limit before executable orders were available. Fix: Treat stop-limit as a price-control tool, not an execution guarantee. Use a stop-market when exiting is more important than the exact price, or set a limit range only after confirming the venue’s liquidity and gap behavior.
Best Value
The fill is much worse than the stop
Likely cause: A market order met a thin book, a gap or a rapid repricing. Fix: Reduce size, avoid leverage, trade more liquid instruments, allow a realistic slippage reserve and do not assume the displayed stop is a guaranteed exit price.
The venue rejects or cancels the order
Likely cause: Unsupported order type, invalid tick or quantity, session restriction, insufficient margin, expiration or a maintenance event. Fix: Read the rejection message, correct the parameter, and confirm that a working protective order exists before leaving the position unattended. Never assume a failed submission created protection.
A halt or outage prevents an exit
Likely cause: No executable market exists while trading is paused or the venue is unavailable. Fix: Keep positions small enough to survive a reopening gap, avoid relying on leverage that can liquidate during an interruption, and know the venue’s contingency and reopening rules.

Worked portfolio example
Assume an account has three open positions. Each position has a planned stop loss of $180, but two positions are driven by the same sector and the third is a closely related token. The individual risk appears to be $540. A portfolio rule might cap the correlated group at $300 and total open risk at $450. Under that rule, the trader would reduce at least one position before adding another, even though every trade passes its own stop calculation. The figures illustrate how a policy works; they are not universal limits.
If the account then reaches its preselected weekly loss limit, the plan pauses new trades. Existing positions are managed under their stops, but the trader does not “win back” the loss by increasing size or widening stops. The pause is a behavioral control that prevents a series of individually reasonable trades from becoming one oversized drawdown.
A compact pre-trade checklist
- What observation proves the thesis wrong?
- Does the stop sit outside ordinary volatility and the spread?
- What is the maximum dollar loss after fees, funding and plausible slippage?
- Does position size follow from that loss budget?
- Could correlated positions hit their stops together?
- Is leverage low enough that liquidation cannot precede the planned stop?
- Which order type matches the priority: execution or price control?
- How does this venue determine triggers and handle gaps, halts, outages and maintenance?
- After submission, does the platform show the order as accepted and working?
Use stops as one part of a risk system: thesis-based levels, size derived from a dollar budget, portfolio caps, and venue checks. That combination cannot eliminate gaps or slippage, but it prevents an arbitrary stop percentage or oversized crypto position from deciding the size of your loss.
