Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A price alert notifies you when a stock reaches a condition you set; it does not place a trade. A stop-loss is a sell order that may be triggered by a price movement, but its trigger price is not a guaranteed sale price. To set either, open the stock or holding in your brokerage app, use its alert controls or order ticket, enter the condition or order details, and confirm the saved alert or submitted order. Exact screens, order types, and trigger rules vary by brokerage.
Set a price alert
- Find the stock by name or ticker in the brokerage app and open its security page.
- Open the page’s price-alert or notification controls. The label and location depend on the provider.
- Choose a condition, such as price rising above or falling below a level, and enter the threshold.
- If offered, choose recurrence and notification-delivery options, then save.
- Check the app’s alert list or confirmation to make sure the alert is active.
Alert behavior is provider-specific: recurrence and delivery options may differ, and an alert is not a trade instruction. For example, Robinhood’s support page describes setting custom price alerts from a stock, ETF, or crypto chart in its app or on web classic. Trading 212’s help centre documents custom and default alerts, including a recurring option during setup. These are provider examples, not universal steps; screens can change.

Place a stop-based sell order
- Open the relevant holding and choose the trade or order action.
- Confirm the security, select sell for a long position, enter the quantity, and choose a supported stop order type.
- Enter the stop trigger price. For a stop-limit order, enter its separate limit price as well.
- Review the order’s time in force, eligible trading sessions, estimated details, and any broker disclosures shown on the ticket.
- Submit only after checking the terms, then verify that the order appears with the intended status.
This is a general workflow, not a tested sequence for a particular app. Field names, availability, and session rules vary; check your brokerage’s current help and disclosures. FINRA notes that firms are not obligated to accept stop or stop-limit orders.
Know the difference between an alert, a stop, and a stop-limit
| Tool | What happens when the condition is met | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Price alert | Sends a notification; you decide whether to act. | It does not automatically buy or sell. |
| Stop order | Under FINRA’s standard definition, the order becomes a market order when the stop condition is reached. | It prioritizes an attempt at execution, but the sale price may differ from the stop price. |
| Stop-limit order | Becomes a limit order when triggered. | It sets a price boundary, but may not execute if the market moves past the limit. |
| Trailing stop | The stop level follows the market by a set dollar or percentage amount under the order’s rules. | Confirm with your brokerage how the trailing level is calculated and when it applies. |
FINRA’s order-types guide, volatile-markets explanation, and the FINRA Rule 5350 definition explain standard stop mechanics. The SEC’s investor bulletin also describes stop, stop-limit, and trailing-stop orders.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
Understand the risks before choosing a stop
A stop price is a trigger, not a guaranteed exit price
Once triggered, a standard stop becomes a market order under FINRA’s standard definition, so it may execute at a materially different price in a fast-moving market. FINRA’s March 26, 2025 example describes a sell stop at $50 that could sell for less than $50 if the market moves quickly; that example illustrates the mechanics, not a price recommendation.
A stop-limit can go unfilled
A limit price provides a boundary for execution, but it cannot guarantee a sale. If the market moves beyond the limit and does not return, the order may remain unfilled while the stock continues to fall.

Short-lived moves can trigger an order
A sharp, temporary drop can reach a stop trigger and be followed by a recovery, leaving you sold out during a move that reverses. FINRA discusses this risk in its Regulatory Notice 16-19. Consider how your chosen order behaves in volatile conditions, and do not treat a stop as a cap on possible losses.
Check your brokerage’s trigger rules
Brokerages may use different trigger conventions and may restrict available order types. FINRA Rule 5350 describes the standard transaction-based trigger and requires firms that offer a differently labeled alternative-trigger order to distinguish and explain it before order entry. Read the order ticket’s disclosures so you know what price movement can activate the order and which sessions it covers.
