How to Set Stop-Loss and Take-Profit Rules for Binance AI Trading (Spot and Futures)

Set the exit logic before you let an AI system place an order: define the price that invalidates your trade, the condition that takes profit, the quantity each exit may close, and (for Futures) whether Last Price or Mark Price is the trigger reference. Then map that plan to the correct Binance product. Spot commonly uses conditional orders or an OCO order list; Futures uses its own stop-market, stop-limit and position parameters. A trigger only instructs Binance to submit an order—it does not guarantee a fill at the trigger price.

This separation matters because Binance documents order mechanics, not a universally suitable stop percentage, target percentage or reward-to-risk ratio. Your levels must come from your setup, risk budget and market conditions. The instructions below show how to turn that decision into a Spot or Futures order and how to constrain an AI executor around it.

Start with an exit plan, not an order type

An AI trader can submit an order quickly, but it cannot decide a sensible invalidation level for every strategy. Write four instructions in plain language before configuring automation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Invalidation: the price condition that proves your trade thesis is wrong.
  • Profit condition: the price or market event at which you want to realize a gain.
  • Quantity: the amount each exit is allowed to close, including whether it closes the entire position or only part of it.
  • Trigger reference: for Futures, whether the condition should use Last Price or Mark Price.

These are planning decisions, not Binance recommendations. A stop distance that works for one symbol, timeframe or volatility regime may be inappropriate for another. Do not copy a percentage from a template and treat it as a platform standard.

Translate the plan into a risk budget

Choose the maximum amount you are willing to lose on the position before selecting its size. A simple planning relationship is:

position size = planned loss at the stop ÷ distance from entry to invalidation

The planned loss and distance are choices you make; Binance does not publish a universal fraction of account equity or a required reward-to-risk ratio. Include fees, funding (for Futures), possible slippage and any other position costs in your own calculation. If the resulting size violates your account, symbol or AI limits, reduce the size or reject the trade rather than moving the stop farther away.

Use an illustrative price map

Suppose a long position is entered at 100, the setup is invalid below 95, and the intended target is 110. Those numbers only demonstrate the relationship: 95 is the stop condition and 110 is the target. They are not a recommendation. Your AI configuration should store the same relationships and quantities that you approved, rather than recalculating them from an arbitrary percentage after entry.

Confirm which Binance product you are using

Spot, Margin and Futures do not share one universal stop-loss workflow. The Spot REST documentation covers Spot order lists and also describes OCO usage for Spot and Margin, while Futures support material documents separate conditional-order behavior. Check the current product documentation and account mode before copying any recipe.

Product Relevant exit mechanism What to verify
Spot Conditional Spot order types and OCO order lists Supported order pair, side, price relationships, symbol filters and available quantity
Margin OCO usage is described in Binance’s Spot/Margin order-list documentation Margin-specific borrowing, repayment and account restrictions in addition to order rules
Futures Futures stop-market and stop-limit conditional orders Position side, quantity or close-position choice, trigger reference and reduce-only behavior

For changing endpoint versions, filters and interface labels, use the current Binance Spot REST API documentation and the Binance derivatives trade API documentation rather than relying on an old bot example.

Spot: map a target and stop with conditional orders or OCO

How Spot conditional order types behave

Binance’s Spot order types distinguish between a trigger that submits a market order and one that submits a limit order. The relevant choices are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Spot choice What happens after the trigger Main trade-off
STOP_LOSS or TAKE_PROFIT The trigger can submit a market order. Submission prioritizes market execution behavior; the eventual fill price is not fixed.
STOP_LOSS_LIMIT or TAKE_PROFIT_LIMIT The trigger places a limit order. You control the submitted limit price, but the order may remain unfilled if the market moves through it.

Binance explains these mechanics in Different Order Types in Spot Trading. A stop price is therefore a condition for submitting an order, not a promise that a trade will execute at that price. Market execution can fill at a different price, while a stop-limit can fail to fill during a rapid move.

When an OCO is appropriate

An OCO (“one cancels the other”) links two eligible Spot orders. One leg is the take-profit/limit-side order and the other is the stop-side order. When one leg executes, Binance cancels the paired leg. This is commonly used as a SELL OCO to manage an existing long holding: the upper leg seeks the target and the lower stop leg provides the loss exit.

OCO is not an unrestricted pair of any two orders. Binance requires a supported order-type combination and imposes price relationships that depend on whether the list is a buy or sell. The current rules and parameters are in the Spot API order-list documentation. Check those rules, the symbol’s tick-size and quantity filters, and the current interface before submitting.

Spot setup procedure

  1. Select the account and symbol. Confirm that you are in Spot (or the intended Margin account), that you hold the asset to sell, and that the symbol permits the quantities and prices you calculated.
  2. Write the exit values. Record the target price, stop trigger price, any stop-limit price, and the quantity each leg should sell. Keep the target and stop quantities consistent with the position you intend to protect.
  3. Choose a single conditional order or OCO. Use a market-triggering type when submitting a market order after the trigger is the intended behavior. Use a limit-triggering type only when you accept that a fast move can leave it open. Use OCO when you need the target and stop linked so that execution of one removes the other.
  4. Validate the relationship rules. For an OCO, verify the side-specific ordering of limit, stop and stop-limit prices in Binance’s current rules. Reject the order if any filter or relationship check fails; do not “fix” it by silently changing the strategy level.
  5. Submit and inspect the result. Confirm the returned order or order-list identifier, status, side and quantity. Then inspect open orders and the asset balance to make sure the stop and target are actually active.

If you submit separate, unlinked Spot orders instead of OCO, one can remain active after the other fills. Your bot must then cancel or reconcile the surviving order; an OCO delegates that cancellation relationship to the exchange.

Futures: choose stop-market or stop-limit and set position fields deliberately

Stop-market versus stop-limit

On Binance Futures, a stop-market trigger submits a market order, while a stop-limit trigger submits a limit order. The first avoids specifying a fixed execution price but can fill at a different price from the trigger. The second specifies the limit that will be submitted after the trigger but may not fill if the market moves beyond that limit. Binance describes these choices in Types of Order on Binance Futures.

Neither type makes the trigger itself an execution guarantee. Decide whether your priority is submitting an order into a fast market or controlling the maximum/minimum price of the resulting limit order, and encode that choice explicitly in the AI rule.

Last Price and Mark Price are different trigger references

Binance Futures interfaces and APIs identify Last Price and Mark Price as possible trigger references. They are different price streams, so the same numeric stop can trigger at different times depending on which reference you select. A rule should name the reference, and the live order should be checked afterward to ensure the intended one was used.

Binance’s Futures stop-loss/take-profit guidance is available at How to Place Stop Loss and Take Profit Orders on Binance Futures. Product availability and labels can vary by jurisdiction and interface version.

Position-side and closing parameters

Futures orders add fields that do not have a one-to-one Spot equivalent. Before an AI executor submits an exit, verify:

  • Symbol and side: the contract and whether the order sells a long or buys back a short.
  • Position side: the account’s one-way or hedge-mode interpretation, and the side to which the order belongs.
  • Quantity or closePosition: whether you are closing a specified amount or instructing the order to close the position under the supported close-position behavior.
  • Reduce-only intent: whether the order must only reduce an existing position rather than open or increase one.
  • Working/trigger type: the selected Last Price or Mark Price reference exposed by the account and API context.

These fields are constrained by the derivatives API. In particular, closePosition=true cannot be combined with quantity or reduceOnly in the documented request model. Treat those parameters as alternatives governed by the current endpoint, not interchangeable switches. See the derivatives trade API reference for the active parameter rules.

Futures setup procedure

  1. Identify the mode. Confirm the contract, margin context and whether the account is in one-way or hedge mode. A position-side mismatch can make an otherwise valid request unsuitable for the position you meant to protect.
  2. Define the close quantity. Choose an explicit quantity or the supported close-position instruction. Do not send both when the API disallows that combination, and do not assume a reduce-only flag can be combined with every close option.
  3. Select the trigger reference. Record Last Price or Mark Price in the strategy configuration and verify that the submitted order reports the same working type.
  4. Select the order behavior. Use stop-market when a market order after the trigger is the intended behavior; use stop-limit only when you accept the possibility of no fill during a fast move.
  5. Submit, then reconcile. Read the order response and query the position and open-order state. Confirm symbol, side, position side, quantity, trigger type and status before treating the protection as live.

Design stop and target levels without a universal percentage

Anchor the stop to setup invalidation

Use the market condition that disproves your trade idea—such as a level, structure break or indicator condition chosen by your strategy—as the stop rationale. Place the trigger where that condition is observable, then size the position so the resulting loss fits your approved budget. Binance’s documentation does not establish a standard distance that is suitable for all traders.

Make the target a planned outcome

A take-profit can represent a resistance level, a measured move, a time-based exit or another rule in your strategy. The exchange only receives the resulting price and quantity. If the AI is allowed to move a target, define exactly what event authorizes the change and log the old and new values. Otherwise, an adaptive model can turn a fixed plan into an unreviewed discretionary decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle partial exits explicitly

If you want to close in stages, specify each quantity and the condition for each stage. On Spot, an OCO pair protects the quantity attached to that list; on Futures, quantity and close-position behavior must comply with the endpoint constraints. Do not assume that filling one partial order automatically changes every other order unless you have verified that linkage.

Constrain the AI execution layer

Automation adds permission and operational risk beyond the order mechanics. The Binance-hosted AI policy and terms document says: “Binance does not review, approve, or monitor individual AI-generated trade instructions prior to execution;” it also places responsibility on users to set appropriate risk parameters, position limits and permissions through the AI configuration and account permissions. Review the current document and its applicability to your jurisdiction at Binance’s AI policy and terms PDF. Supported products and availability may change by jurisdiction.

Minimum controls to configure

  • Allowed products and symbols: restrict the AI to the Spot, Margin or Futures products you have reviewed.
  • Position limits: cap total exposure, per-symbol exposure and the number of simultaneous positions.
  • Order-size limits: reject orders outside the quantity and notional range you approved.
  • Permission scope: grant only the account and trading permissions required; avoid unnecessary withdrawal or administrative access.
  • Human approval: verify whether per-trade approval is enabled. Do not assume a review step exists because an AI generated the instruction.
  • Stale-data checks: reject a rule if its price, position quantity or timestamp is no longer current.
  • Failure handling: define what happens after rejection, cancellation, partial fill, network failure or an order that remains open unexpectedly.

Separate strategy changes from emergency controls

Give the AI a narrow authority to execute approved exits, while reserving a separate manual or automated kill switch for abnormal conditions. A kill switch should stop new entries and alert you; it should not silently delete active protection without a replacement decision. Document who can change limits and how the change is audited.

Verify that protection is live after submission

Submission success is not the same as protection. Build a reconciliation step into every AI workflow:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the exchange response and persist the order or order-list identifier.
  2. Query open orders and the current position or asset balance.
  3. Match the live order’s symbol, side, quantity, trigger price, limit price (if any), position side and working type against the approved rule.
  4. Check that an OCO still contains both intended legs, or that a Futures conditional order remains open and attached to the intended position.
  5. Alert on rejection, expiration, cancellation, partial fill, quantity mismatch or a position with no corresponding exit.
  6. After one leg executes, confirm the paired Spot leg was canceled and that any remaining Futures quantity still has the intended protection.

This monitoring is implementation guidance, not an exchange guarantee. API responses, filters and order-status behavior can change, so test reconciliation in a controlled environment and keep the endpoint version current.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Failure mode Why it happens Correction
Using a Spot OCO recipe for a Futures position The products expose different order types and parameters. Start over with the Futures conditional-order and position-side rules for the account mode.
Assuming the stop price is the fill price A trigger submits a market or limit order; it is not an execution guarantee. Choose stop-market or stop-limit with the slippage or non-fill trade-off understood.
A stop-limit remains open in a fast move The market passed the submitted limit before a fill occurred. Use a market-triggering exit when execution priority is more important than limit-price control, or define monitoring and escalation for an unfilled limit.
Wrong Futures trigger timing The order used Last Price when the strategy expected Mark Price, or vice versa. Set the working type explicitly and verify it in the live order.
Invalid close parameters closePosition, quantity and reduceOnly were combined without checking endpoint constraints. Use the documented combination for the active API and account mode; reject ambiguous instructions.
Target and stop both remain after a Spot exit Separate orders were submitted without an OCO relationship. Use a supported OCO list or have the bot cancel and reconcile the remaining order.
AI changes risk without approval Automatic execution may occur without per-trade human review. Set explicit limits, permissions and approval requirements, and audit every rule change.

Implementation checklist

  • Product and account mode identified: Spot, Margin or Futures.
  • Entry, invalidation, target and exit quantities written before submission.
  • No universal stop percentage or reward-to-risk claim is being treated as a Binance rule.
  • Spot order type or OCO pair satisfies current side, price and symbol-filter rules.
  • Futures symbol, side, position side, quantity/close-position choice, reduce-only intent and trigger reference are explicit.
  • Stop-market versus stop-limit trade-off is accepted by the strategy owner.
  • AI product scope, position limits, order-size limits and permissions are configured.
  • Human approval status is known rather than assumed.
  • Order identifiers, status, open orders and position state are reconciled after submission and after fills.
  • Documentation and endpoint versions are checked again before deployment because Binance may change APIs, supported products and interface labels.
