Set your exit levels before you open a Bitcoin futures position: a long trade normally uses a stop-loss below entry and a take-profit above it; a short trade reverses those positions. Then choose whether each exit triggers from mark, last-traded, or index price, decide between market and limit execution, and verify that the order will only reduce or close your position.
The most reliable setup is a bracket with linked stop-loss and take-profit exits. When supported, the exchange sizes the exits to the quantity that actually fills and cancels the remaining exit when one closes the position. You still need to check liquidation distance, price-protection rules, trigger direction, and open-order status after entry.

What stop-loss and take-profit orders do on Bitcoin futures
A futures position has two separate decisions: where the trade is invalidated and where profits are taken. A stop-loss closes the position when price moves against your plan. A take-profit closes it when price reaches your objective. Neither order guarantees that you will be filled at the exact trigger number.
For a long position, you buy the contract first. Your stop-loss is below the entry price because a decline invalidates the trade, and your take-profit is above entry because a rise reaches the objective. For a short position, you sell first. The stop-loss is above entry and the take-profit is below it.

| Position | Stop-loss location | Take-profit location | Closing side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long | Below entry | Above entry | Sell to reduce or close |
| Short | Above entry | Below entry | Buy to reduce or close |
These are protective and profit-taking exits, not new entries. A common error is selecting the wrong side and accidentally increasing the position instead of closing it. Before submitting, confirm that the order is marked reduce-only or close-position when the venue provides that control.
Plan the trade before placing an order
Define the invalidation level
Choose the price at which your market view is no longer valid before you click Buy or Sell. The level should come from your trading plan, such as a broken support or resistance area, a failed pattern, or another objective condition. Do not move the stop merely because the position is losing.
Your position size should be chosen after the stop level is known. A wider stop represents more price exposure per contract; a tighter stop represents less price exposure but can be reached by ordinary market noise. The exchange does not provide a universal correct distance, and the official platform material does not establish a general win rate, risk-reward ratio, or stop percentage.
Set the target independently
A take-profit should represent a level at which the trade has achieved its purpose, not simply a number selected to create an attractive ratio. Consider nearby liquidity, prior highs or lows, and whether the target is realistically reachable before the invalidation level. If the market reaches the target first, the stop should not remain as an unintended order that can open a new position later.
Check contract and margin details
Read the contract specification for the Bitcoin futures instrument you are trading. Contract size, tick precision, minimum quantity, margin currency, fees, and allowed order types vary by venue and region. Confirm that your account is eligible for the derivatives product and that you understand whether the displayed liquidation price changes with mark price, margin, funding, and other open positions.
Choose the exit order type
The trigger and the order submitted after that trigger are separate concepts. A stop-market or take-profit-market order activates at a trigger and then sends a market order. A stop-limit or take-profit-limit order activates at a trigger and then sends a limit order.

| Exit type | What happens at the trigger | Main advantage | Main failure mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop-market | A market order is sent after activation. | Highest likelihood of execution during a fast move. | Fill price can be materially above or below the stop, especially in volatile or thin markets. |
| Stop-limit | A limit order is placed after activation. | Sets a worst acceptable execution price. | The market can move beyond the limit and leave the position open. |
| Take-profit-market | A market order closes at the favorable trigger. | Prioritizes getting out when the target is reached. | Execution can differ from the trigger during rapid movement. |
| Take-profit-limit | A limit order is placed after activation. | Controls the minimum or maximum acceptable exit price, depending on side. | No fill is guaranteed if price moves away before the limit executes. |
| Trailing stop | The trigger follows price according to the venue’s trailing rules. | Can protect gains without a fixed target. | Trail amount, activation rules, and trigger behavior differ by exchange. |
A stop-market is generally the simpler protective choice when remaining in the position is more dangerous than receiving an uncertain fill. A stop-limit is appropriate only when you understand the possibility of no execution and have a separate plan for a runaway market.
Choose the trigger reference: mark, last, or index price
Derivatives platforms commonly let you select the price signal that activates a stop or target. The same numeric trigger can activate at different times depending on this choice.
| Trigger signal | Meaning | Typical role | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mark price | The venue’s calculated fair-value reference. | Often used for liquidation and unrealized-profit calculations. | It can diverge from the latest trade during extreme conditions, and its precision can affect activation. |
| Last traded price | The price of the most recent trade on that contract. | Responds directly to trades occurring in the contract. | A brief outlier trade can activate an exit even when the broader reference price has not moved as far. |
| Index price | An external reference defined by the venue, usually derived from underlying-market prices. | Can reduce sensitivity to a single contract’s print. | It may not match the price at which your order can actually execute. |
There is no universally superior trigger. Select the signal that matches the risk you are trying to control. Mark-price triggers can align with liquidation logic; last-price triggers react to actual contract trades; index-price triggers follow the venue’s external reference. Review the platform’s definition and price-protection rules before deciding.
Step-by-step: place a Bitcoin futures position with exits
- Select the contract and review its rules. Open the Bitcoin futures instrument, check contract denomination, tick size, minimum quantity, margin requirements, fees, and whether the product is available in your jurisdiction.
- Decide whether the position is long or short. Write down the entry, invalidation level, target, quantity, and selected trigger signal before opening the order ticket.
- Choose the entry order. A market order seeks immediate execution but can fill across several prices. A limit order controls the entry price but may fill partially or not at all. If the venue supports attached exits, enable the bracket feature before submitting the primary order.
- Enter the stop-loss trigger. For a long, use a level below entry; for a short, use a level above entry. Select stop-market or stop-limit and, if using a limit variant, enter the limit price as well as the trigger.
- Enter the take-profit trigger. For a long, use a level above entry; for a short, use a level below entry. Select the market or limit variant and verify the accepted trigger direction shown by the platform.
- Set the trigger reference. Choose mark price, last traded price, or index price deliberately. Do not assume that the chart’s displayed price is the signal used by the order.
- Make the exits closing-only. Enable reduce-only or close-position when available. Check that the stop and target quantities cannot create a reverse position if the size changes.
- Review the order preview. Confirm side, quantity, trigger signal, trigger price, limit price if applicable, time-in-force, and any displayed liquidation estimate. A stop close to estimated liquidation can be overtaken by liquidation.
- Submit and wait for the fill. If the primary order is a limit order, do not assume the exits are protecting you until the platform shows the relevant filled quantity and active protective orders.
- Verify the live position and exits. Open the positions and open-orders views. Confirm the actual filled quantity, average entry, stop status, target status, trigger signal, and whether the orders are linked as an OCO or bracket pair.
Bracket orders, OCO behavior, and partial fills
A bracket attaches a stop-loss and take-profit to a primary entry. An OCO arrangement means “one cancels the other”: when one exit triggers, the other is automatically cancelled. This prevents a target that has already been reached from later becoming an unwanted entry.
Kraken’s derivatives bracket documentation describes this OCO behavior and says, “When one is triggered it’ll automatically cancel the other order.” It also states that partial fills are handled by setting the exit quantity to the amount filled by the primary order. For example, if only part of a limit entry executes, the bracket can protect that filled amount rather than waiting for you to calculate and submit a separate quantity.
Do not assume every venue handles brackets identically. Some platforms attach both exits only after a fill; others show conditional orders immediately. Check whether an unfilled remainder has protection, how a partial fill changes exit quantity, and whether editing one leg breaks the OCO relationship.

Platform-specific behavior to check
Binance Futures
Binance documents mark-price, last-price, and index-price trigger choices and warns that mark and last prices can diverge sharply during extreme moves. It also notes that mark-price precision affects activation. Review the order ticket’s trigger-protection setting and confirm whether price protection could prevent an exit from triggering when the mark-to-last difference exceeds the venue’s threshold.
Binance’s Futures FAQ gives this warning: “It is not advised to set the stop-loss trigger price close to the estimated liquidation price, liquidation may happen before the stop-loss order and cause the stop-loss order to expire.” Treat the liquidation estimate as a boundary to keep away from, not as a substitute for a stop-loss.
Kraken derivatives
Kraken lists stop-loss, stop-loss-limit, take-profit, take-profit-limit, and trailing-stop variants for derivatives. Its bracket feature can attach one or both exits to the primary order and can size the exits to the quantity that actually fills. The platform documents mark, index, and last as selectable trigger signals.
Kraken’s general stop-loss guidance also warns that an independent stop may need manual cancellation after the position is closed by another order. If you close manually, partially close, or modify the position with a separate order, inspect the remaining conditional orders rather than assuming the bracket has updated correctly.
Why your fill differs from the stop price
Market execution and slippage
A trigger is not a guaranteed execution price. When a stop-market activates, it becomes a market order that consumes available bids for a long exit or asks for a short exit. During a rapid move or in a thin order book, the available prices can be far from the trigger. Kraken explicitly notes that volatile or thin markets can produce fills materially above or below the stop.
Stop-limit non-execution
A stop-limit protects price only if the market can trade at your limit after activation. If Bitcoin gaps through the limit, the conditional order becomes a resting limit order and may remain unfilled while the loss grows. Monitor the order status and have a contingency plan for cancelling or replacing it.

Different price signals
A stop set to mark price can activate while the last traded price remains elsewhere, or a last-price stop can activate on a trade that does not move the mark price as far. An index-price trigger can behave differently again. Compare the selected signal with the chart and the exchange’s published calculation before diagnosing a faulty order.

Some venues prevent a stop or target from triggering when mark and last prices differ beyond a defined threshold. Binance describes this protection as a condition that can cause an exit to be missed during an extreme divergence. If your order did not activate, inspect whether price protection was enabled and whether its condition was met.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Liquidation, margin, and fees
Liquidation is an exchange-forced closure that can happen before a protective stop if the account’s margin is exhausted. A stop placed close to the estimated liquidation price may expire because liquidation occurs first. Leave a meaningful distance between the stop and liquidation boundary according to the contract’s margin rules, and recheck that distance whenever leverage, collateral, funding, or other positions change.
Fees and funding affect the realized result even when the trigger and execution prices look favorable. A market exit can incur taker fees, and a limit exit may incur a different fee or fail to fill. Include the contract’s current fee schedule and any funding obligations in your trade plan rather than treating the displayed gross profit as the final result.
What to verify after opening the position
- The position side is correct: long or short.
- The filled quantity and average entry match your plan.
- The stop-loss is on the closing side and shows the intended trigger signal.
- The take-profit is on the closing side and shows the intended trigger signal.
- Reduce-only or close-position is enabled where available.
- The order type after activation is market or limit as intended.
- The exit quantity covers the filled position, including any partial fill.
- The stop remains safely before liquidation in the direction of risk.
- The platform shows the expected OCO or bracket relationship.
- No duplicate or independent order remains that could open a reverse position after closure.
Common problems and fixes
The stop is rejected
Check tick-size precision, minimum quantity, trigger direction, and whether the trigger is on the correct side of the current market. A long stop above the current price or a short stop below it may violate the venue’s accepted direction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe target triggered but the stop is still open
Inspect whether you used a true bracket/OCO or two independent conditional orders. If they are independent, cancel the remaining stop immediately after confirming that the position is closed. Otherwise it could later execute and open a new short or long.
Best Value
Only part of the position is protected
Compare the filled quantity with the stop quantity. A limit entry can fill in pieces, and a manually entered stop may cover only the amount you estimated initially. Use the venue’s bracket sizing when available, or adjust the stop after each fill.
The stop triggered during a brief spike
Review the selected signal. A last-price trigger may respond to a single trade, while mark or index triggers may not. Changing the signal is an execution-design choice, not proof that one reference is always safer. Also check whether the spike was a genuine market move or an isolated print under the venue’s rules.
The stop never triggered before liquidation
Compare the trigger with the liquidation event and review price-protection conditions. A stop too close to liquidation can lose the race, and a protection rule can block activation during mark-to-last divergence. Reassess margin, leverage, trigger distance, and the selected order type before opening another position.

| Feature to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Trigger references | Are mark, last, and index prices available? How are they calculated and displayed? |
| Execution variants | Can you use stop-market, stop-limit, take-profit-market, take-profit-limit, and trailing stops? |
| Closing controls | Are reduce-only and close-position available, and do they prevent accidental reversal? |
| Bracket/OCO handling | Are both exits attached automatically, and does one cancel the other? |
| Partial fills | Are exit quantities adjusted to the amount actually filled? |
| Price protection | Can a mark-to-last threshold prevent activation, and where is that condition shown? |
| Liquidation display | Is estimated liquidation visible beside the position, and does it update with margin changes? |
| Contract access and cost | Is the product available in your region, and what are the current trading, funding, and settlement rules? |
These mechanics can change as a venue updates its contracts or order engine. Read the current contract and order-type documentation for the specific account, jurisdiction, and instrument rather than relying on screenshots or settings from another product.
A practical pre-submit checklist
- Write the invalidation and target levels before entering.
- Confirm long versus short and the closing side of both exits.
- Choose mark, last, or index trigger deliberately.
- Choose market or limit behavior after activation.
- Enable reduce-only or close-position when supported.
- Check quantity, precision, fees, margin, and estimated liquidation.
- Keep the stop away from liquidation; do not treat liquidation as a stop.
- Read the venue’s price-protection conditions.
- After entry, verify filled quantity, active exits, and OCO status.
- After any manual or alternate close, cancel independent protective orders that remain.
The essential rule
A stop-loss and take-profit work as a system only when the trigger, execution type, quantity, and closing controls all match the position. Decide the levels first, use a linked bracket when its behavior is understood, keep the stop clear of liquidation, and confirm the live orders after every fill or manual change. The trigger price is an activation condition—not a promise of the final fill.
