How to Set Stop-Loss and Take-Profit Orders for Ethereum Trades

To set exits for an Ethereum trade, first identify whether you are holding spot ETH or an open short or leveraged contract. Then choose a protective stop below (for a long) or above (for a short), choose a profit target on the opposite side of your entry, select market or limit execution, confirm the exchange’s trigger price, and submit either linked exits or separate orders. A trigger only activates an order; it does not guarantee that you will be filled at that price.

The exact labels and rules depend on the exchange, product, region, and whether the platform uses last-traded, mark, index, or another reference price. The workflow below is platform-neutral, followed by clearly labeled examples for common exchange implementations.

What stop-loss and take-profit orders do

A stop-loss is a conditional exit intended to close a position when the market moves against your trade. A take-profit is a conditional exit intended to close it after price reaches a favorable target. Neither order predicts Ethereum’s next move, and neither one guarantees a result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the trigger condition is met, the exchange submits or activates the associated order. A market-based exit normally seeks an available fill immediately, but the execution price can differ from the trigger. A limit exit specifies the least favorable price you will accept; it can remain open and unfilled if the market moves past that limit.

Coinbase’s derivatives help documentation states that “TP/SL does not guarantee a profit, a maximum loss, or protection from liquidation.” It also explains that market-based exits may execute at a different price from the trigger price, while limit orders execute only at the limit price or better and may remain unfilled. These are mechanics, not a promise that a stop will cap your loss.

Decide which position you are closing

Direction determines both the order side and where the two levels sit. Write down the product, position direction, entry price, size, and intended exit levels before opening the order ticket.

Position Protective stop Profit target Typical closing side
Long spot ETH Below the current price or entry Above the current price or entry Sell ETH
Long margin, perpetual, or futures position Above liquidation distance but below the position’s relevant price Above the entry or current price Sell or reduce the long
Short ETH position Above the current price or entry Below the current price or entry Buy ETH or buy to close

The table describes direction, not a recommended distance. A stop that is too close can be triggered by ordinary volatility; one that is too far can expose more capital than your plan allows. No universal ETH price or percentage is correct for every account, time frame, or market condition.

Long spot example

If you own ETH in a spot account, both exits are normally sell orders. The take-profit is placed above the market, while the stop is below it. Selling one exit should leave no unintended second sell order for the same coins.

Short and leveraged example

For a short or leveraged position, the directions reverse: the protective buy stop is above the position, and the buy-to-close target is below it. Derivatives also introduce position mode, reduce-only settings, maintenance margin, and liquidation. A take-profit or stop-loss does not remove liquidation risk, especially when the selected trigger reference differs from the chart.

Plan the levels before opening the ticket

Choose exits as part of the trade plan rather than improvising after a sudden price move. Record:

Use the exchange’s displayed tick size, minimum quantity, and price precision. An otherwise sensible level can be rejected if it has too many decimal places, falls outside the allowed distance, or does not meet the minimum order value.

A simple risk check

For a long, the planned price distance to the stop is the entry price minus the stop level. Multiplying that distance by the ETH quantity gives an approximate price-move loss before fees and slippage. For a short, use the stop level minus the entry price. This is only a planning calculation: a market stop can fill away from the trigger, and a limit stop might not fill at all.

Do not treat an illustrative calculation as a forecast. The official exchange material describes order behavior, not a reliable ETH prediction or a personalized risk limit.

Choose stop-market or stop-limit execution

Choice What happens after the trigger Main advantage Main failure mode
Stop-market The exchange submits a market order after the stop condition is met. Higher likelihood of an execution during a fast move. The fill can be materially different from the trigger because of volatility, gaps, liquidity, or fees.
Stop-limit The exchange submits a limit order after the stop condition is met. Sets a worst acceptable execution price. If the market moves through the limit, the order can remain partially filled or completely unfilled.
Limit take-profit A limit sell for a long, or limit buy for a short, is activated at the selected condition. Price control at the target or better. Price may touch the trigger without enough liquidity at the limit, leaving the position open.

Some interfaces call a stop-market a “stop,” “market stop,” or “stop-loss market,” and call a stop-limit a “stop-limit.” A take-profit may be a conditional limit, conditional market order, or an attached bracket leg. Read the preview rather than relying on the label alone.

Check which price triggers the order

The price shown on a chart is not necessarily the price used to activate a conditional order. Platforms may offer last-traded price, mark price, index price, or another reference. Coinbase instructs derivatives users to review the selected reference, and Crypto.com documents mark-price-triggered conditional TP/SL orders.

A mark-price trigger can activate while the last trade on your chart is at another level. Conversely, a last-price trigger can react to a trade that does not represent the broader derivatives market. Before submitting, identify:

Platform-neutral procedure for setting both exits

  1. Open the correct market. Select the ETH spot pair, margin market, perpetual, or futures contract you actually intend to trade. Order types and trigger rules can differ by product and by region.
  2. Confirm direction and size. Verify whether the ticket is for a long or short position and enter the quantity to close. On a derivatives ticket, check the current position rather than typing the original entry size if you have already reduced it.
  3. Choose the execution style. Select a market-based stop when execution priority matters more than price certainty, or a stop-limit when you accept the possibility of no fill in exchange for a price boundary. Choose the corresponding take-profit type.
  4. Enter the trigger. For a long, put the protective stop below the relevant price and the profit target above it. For a short, reverse those directions. If the platform requires a separate limit price, enter it in addition to the stop trigger.
  5. Set the trigger reference. Select last, mark, index, or the platform’s available alternative, and compare it with the price used by the chart. Do not assume that the default matches your analysis.
  6. Link the exits when supported. Use the platform’s OCO, bracket, or attached TP/SL feature if you want one exit to cancel the other. Read how it handles partial entry fills, partial exits, and remaining quantity.
  7. Enable reduce-only where appropriate. For a derivative close, reduce-only is intended to prevent an exit from increasing or reversing the position. It is not available or named the same way on every spot or derivatives product.
  8. Review constraints and costs. Check quantity, tick size, minimum order value, available balance, contract multiplier, fees, and expected liquidity. Confirm that a stop-limit’s limit is on the executable side of the market after triggering.
  9. Submit and verify the preview. Ensure the preview shows the intended side, quantity, trigger reference, trigger price, limit price if any, and reduce-only status. Submit only after those fields match your plan.
  10. Monitor the open-order and position views. Confirm that both exits are listed and that their quantities match the live position. An attached order can be inactive until an entry fills, while a separately submitted order may be live immediately.
  11. Reconcile after every partial fill. If the entry or an exit fills in pieces, inspect the remaining position and open orders. Adjust the remaining TP/SL quantity or cancel stale orders so an old sell or buy cannot unintentionally open a new position.
  12. Cancel leftovers after closing. Once the position is fully closed, verify that the linked or separate exit orders are canceled. Coinbase specifically advises reviewing and canceling leftover TP/SL orders after reducing or closing a derivatives position.

How linked OCO and bracket exits work

OCO means “one-cancels-the-other.” A linked pair contains a profit-taking leg and a protective leg; when one is executed or otherwise activated under that platform’s rules, the other is canceled. A bracket order attaches exits to an entry or position and may activate them as the entry fills.

Linkage reduces the chance of forgetting to cancel the opposite order, but it is not identical everywhere. Exchanges differ on whether the unfilled leg is canceled at the first trigger or only after execution, how partial fills resize the remaining leg, and whether an attached bracket becomes active for a partial entry. Read the venue’s order description and watch the order list after the first fill.

Binance spot OCO example

Binance’s documented sell-side OCO example for a long spot holding places the take-profit limit above the current market and the stop-loss trigger below it, with the market between the two. That arrangement is specific to Binance’s documented OCO validation and should not be treated as a universal field rule for every exchange or product. A spot trader should still verify the sell quantity and what happens to the remaining leg when one side executes.

Bracket behavior on other venues

Coinbase, Kraken, and other platforms document bracket or attached TP/SL variants with their own handling for partial primary fills and remaining quantities. The existence of a “bracket” label does not tell you whether the exits are live immediately, whether they are reduce-only, or whether a partial fill automatically adjusts both legs.

Spot ETH versus derivatives: rules that change

Consideration Spot ETH Margin, perpetual, or futures
Closing side Usually sell ETH that you own. Sell to reduce a long or buy to reduce a short, subject to contract convention.
Liquidation No leveraged liquidation of the spot holding, although the asset can lose value. Margin and maintenance requirements can liquidate the position before a planned exit.
Reduce-only Often not presented as a separate setting for a simple spot sale. May be essential to prevent an exit from opening or reversing exposure.
Trigger reference Often tied to the traded market, but the platform defines the available choices. May use mark or index price rather than the chart’s last trade.
Position mode Normally a balance of ETH and cash. One-way and hedge modes can change how an order is applied.

For derivatives, confirm the contract’s quantity unit, leverage, margin currency, liquidation formula, position mode, and trigger-price choices in that product’s rules. A correctly entered TP/SL still cannot guarantee protection from liquidation.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Putting the stop on the wrong side

A long needs a protective sell below its relevant price; a short needs a protective buy above it. If the ticket rejects the order, first check the side and whether the exchange expects the stop and limit fields in a particular order.

Confusing trigger and limit prices

In a stop-limit order, the trigger activates the order and the limit controls acceptable execution. They are not interchangeable. A limit placed too close to, or on the wrong side of, the trigger can leave the order unable to execute when the market moves quickly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a chart touch guarantees a fill

A chart can show the trigger being reached while a stop-limit remains unfilled because there are no offers at its limit. A market stop can fill at a different price. Review the fill history, not only the chart candle.

Using the wrong trigger reference

If your chart shows last price but the order uses mark price, the apparent distance to the trigger may be misleading. Change the chart or order reference where possible, or record the reference explicitly in your plan.

Leaving an order after the position is gone

A separately placed exit can remain after a manual close or partial reduction. It may later sell remaining spot or open a new derivative position. Inspect open orders after every close and cancel any order that no longer matches exposure.

Ignoring partial fills

An entry that fills 0.4 ETH out of a planned 1 ETH position should not leave a full-size exit active unless the platform automatically scales it. Check the live quantity and edit both legs when the venue does not resize them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting fees, precision, and liquidity

Fees reduce the net result, tick-size rules can round a level, and thin liquidity can widen the gap between trigger and fill. Use the order preview and depth information supplied by the platform, while recognizing that displayed liquidity can change.

What an order preview should tell you

Before confirmation, you should be able to identify all of these fields or their platform-specific equivalents:

  • ETH market and product type;
  • buy or sell side;
  • quantity and contract multiplier;
  • stop or take-profit trigger condition;
  • trigger reference price;
  • market or limit execution after activation;
  • limit price, if applicable;
  • OCO, bracket, or attached-order relationship;
  • reduce-only or close-position status;
  • estimated fees and required balance or margin; and
  • validity, expiration, or cancellation behavior.

If any field is unclear, open the exchange’s help entry for that exact product instead of copying instructions from a different market. Spot OCO rules cannot be assumed to apply to perpetual contracts, and a derivatives ticket on one venue may use different trigger terminology from another.

When a stop triggers but the result looks wrong

The order triggered at a price you did not see on the chart

Check whether the order used mark or index price while the chart displayed last trade. Compare the order event and trigger reference in the platform’s history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stop shows as triggered but has no fill

If it was stop-limit, inspect the resulting limit order and its remaining quantity. The market may have moved beyond the limit. A stop-market would generally prioritize an available execution, but the fill can be worse than the trigger.

Only part of the position closed

Review the filled quantity, remaining position, and remaining TP/SL quantities. Correct the size manually if the venue does not resize attached legs after a partial fill.

The position was liquidated before the stop

On leveraged products, liquidation can occur when margin requirements are breached. TP/SL is not a liquidation guarantee; review leverage, maintenance margin, and the contract’s trigger and liquidation rules before relying on an exit.

Checklist before and after submission

Before submission

  • Product and ETH market are correct.
  • Long or short direction is confirmed.
  • Stop and target are on the correct sides of the entry.
  • Trigger reference is understood.
  • Market versus limit behavior is acceptable.
  • Quantity, tick size, minimums, and fees are checked.
  • Reduce-only and position mode are correct for derivatives.
  • OCO or bracket cancellation behavior is understood.

After submission

  • Both exits appear in open orders or in the attached-order panel.
  • Quantities match the live position.
  • Partial fills have not left oversized or stale orders.
  • A fully closed position has no leftover exit orders.
  • Fill prices and trigger references are recorded in order history.

Key limitations to keep in mind

Stop-loss and take-profit orders are execution tools, not a trading strategy. The official exchange documentation available for these mechanics does not establish a dependable ETH forecast, a universally correct stop distance, or a guaranteed maximum loss. Slippage, gaps, liquidity, unfilled limits, trigger-reference differences, partial fills, fees, and liquidation can all change the outcome. Treat each setting as conditional and verify the live order state rather than assuming the interface did exactly what you intended.
