Set your risk level before you enter, then choose the tool that matches the job: a price alert sends a notification for your review, while a stop-loss order asks the exchange to execute an exit. For a long position, the protective stop is below the market; for a short position, it is above. In volatile Indian stocks, leave enough distance for normal price movement, size the position so the rupee loss remains acceptable, and understand that a gap or thin liquidity can prevent a stop-limit order from filling.

Start with the loss you can afford

A stop is not a substitute for a trading plan. Before entering an NSE or BSE position, write down the price level that proves your trade idea wrong and the maximum rupee loss you will accept if that level is reached.

Long positions

For a long position, place the protective stop below the current market and below your entry price. If you buy at ₹500 and decide that ₹490 invalidates the trade, the price risk is ₹10 per share, or 2% of the entry price. That is the example used by Zerodha Varsity; it is an illustration, not a universal 2% rule.

Short positions

For a short position, the protective order is a buy stop above the market. A short entered at ₹500 with an invalidation level at ₹510 carries ₹10 of price risk per share. The order direction changes, but the planning process does not.

Convert price risk into position size

Use this calculation before placing the trade:

Maximum quantity = maximum rupee loss ÷ (entry price − stop price) for a long position.

For a short position, use the absolute difference between the entry and stop prices. If your maximum planned loss is ₹2,000 and the stop is ₹10 away, the quantity is 200 shares before any rounding or contract-size adjustment. Round down to a tradable quantity and reassess if the result is too small to justify the trade. Futures and options require the relevant lot size, and the stop type available can differ by segment.

Do not move the stop farther away merely to avoid being stopped. If a wider, structurally sensible stop makes the rupee risk too large, reduce the quantity or skip the trade.

Choose a level that reflects volatility

A fixed percentage is easy to enter but can be poorly matched to a stock’s normal movement. Zerodha Varsity warns that a stock moving 2–3% during ordinary daily activity can hit a mechanically tight stop. Estimate the instrument’s recent volatility and place the stop beyond a meaningful support or resistance area rather than inside routine noise.

Questions to answer before entering

  • What price level invalidates the setup, independent of your entry price?
  • How far does the stock normally move during the time you expect to hold it?
  • Is the stock liquid enough that an exit order can find counterparties?
  • Does the resulting quantity keep the loss within your rupee limit?
  • Are you trading equity, futures, or options, and which stop order types does that segment support?

Volatility should influence the distance to the stop, not override the loss limit. Widening a stop without reducing quantity simply increases the amount at risk.

Price alerts: a notification, not an exit

A price alert tells you that a condition has occurred. It does not sell or buy the position unless you connect it to an order-automation feature. Use an alert when you want to inspect the chart, news, liquidity, or order book before deciding what to do.

Set a price alert in Kite

  1. Open the stock in the Kite app or web interface.
  2. Choose Set alert or Create Alert.
  3. Give the alert a name that identifies the trade or level.
  4. Select the property to monitor, such as price or percentage change.
  5. Enter the threshold and submit the alert.
  6. Confirm that push and email notifications are enabled for the account and device.

Kite documentation describes push and email notifications after the condition triggers. It also documents free alerts, a limit of 500 alerts, and 365-day validity. Those limits apply to the documented Kite alert feature; check the current order screen if your account or segment shows different availability.

When an alert is the right choice

  • You want a reminder to review a support break before taking action.
  • You are monitoring a watchlist rather than protecting an open position.
  • You need to combine the price condition with a discretionary check of news or liquidity.
  • You cannot accept an automatic exit because the trade plan requires confirmation.

An alert is unsuitable as the only protection when you cannot monitor the notification or when the plan requires an automatic exit.

Stop-loss orders: SL and SL-M

A stop-loss is an exchange order that activates when the market reaches or crosses a trigger threshold. The two common forms are an SL order, which has a trigger and a limit price, and an SL-M order, which has a trigger and then seeks execution at the prevailing market price where that order type is supported.

SL: trigger plus limit

With a sell SL for a long position, you enter both a trigger price and a lower limit price. When the trigger is reached, the broker sends the limit sell to the exchange. The limit protects you from selling below your chosen floor, but it also creates a non-execution risk: a fast decline can move past the limit before a buyer is available.

SL-M: trigger only

With an SL-M order, you enter the trigger. Once activated, it is sent as a market-style order and can execute at the prevailing market price where supported. The fill price is not guaranteed, particularly in a rapid move or an illiquid stock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NSE has discontinued SL-M for options. Check the instrument and segment on the order ticket before relying on a market-style stop; an order type available for cash equities may not be available for an options contract.

Place the order

  1. Open the position or stock and choose Sell for a long position or Buy for a short position.
  2. Select the stop-loss order type supported for that instrument: SL or SL-M.
  3. For SL, enter the trigger and limit prices. For SL-M, enter the trigger only.
  4. Enter the quantity and verify the product, exchange, and segment.
  5. Review the trigger direction: below the market for a long exit and above the market for a short exit.
  6. Submit the order and verify its status in the order book.

Do not confuse the trigger with the eventual fill. The trigger starts the order process; it is not a promise that every share will execute at that number.

Automate a linked response with Alert Trigger Orders

If your broker supports it, an Alert Trigger Order (ATO) can link a condition to one or more orders. Zerodha describes ATOs as placing linked orders when the condition fires, with market-price protection. The documented feature supports NSE and BSE equity and futures and options, allows up to 200 ATOs, and defaults to day validity.

Use ATO when the decision is already defined

An ATO is appropriate when you have already decided what order should be placed at the trigger and do not want a notification-only workflow. Configure the condition, linked order, quantity, and validity together, then check that the basket is active. The protection does not remove market risk: the linked order can still face gaps, liquidity limits, exchange rules, or segment restrictions.

ATO constraints

  • Documented support covers NSE and BSE equity and F&O, but eligibility can depend on the exact instrument.
  • Day validity is the default, so an order intended for a later session must be reviewed rather than assumed to persist.
  • Corporate actions that change an instrument’s price by more than 2% can disable ATO alerts, according to Zerodha’s announcement.
  • The 200-ATO limit is separate from the 500-price-alert limit.

After a split, bonus, consolidation, or other material corporate action, check whether the alert remains enabled and whether the trigger still represents the original trade thesis.

Why a stop can fail during a gap

A stop is activated only after the market reaches or crosses its threshold. If the next available traded price opens beyond that level, the order can be triggered at a materially different price.

Gap through an SL limit

Suppose a long position has an SL trigger at ₹490 and a limit at ₹489. A news shock may cause the stock to open at ₹480. The trigger condition has been met, but a sell limit at ₹489 may have no buyer because the market is already below that price. The position can remain open until the order fills or you cancel and replace it.

Gap through an SL-M

An SL-M can seek the available market price after activation, so it is less dependent on a chosen limit. It still cannot guarantee a particular exit price. In a thin or fast market, the fill may be far from the trigger.

Reduce the chance of an unpleasant surprise

  • Use a stop level based on the trade’s structure and normal volatility rather than placing it inside routine noise.
  • Check average liquidity and the spread before sizing the position.
  • Keep quantity small enough that a gap loss beyond the planned stop remains tolerable.
  • Decide in advance what you will do if the stop remains unfilled: monitor, cancel and replace, or close manually under your risk rules.
  • Do not assume an alert will execute an order unless it is explicitly linked to an ATO or another supported automation feature.

Validity, exchange rules, and segment checks

NSE defines a stop-loss price or order as one that allows a trading member to place an order that activates only when the relevant security reaches or crosses a threshold price. This definition explains why a stop is conditional rather than immediately executable.

NSE also states that Good-Till-Cancelled (GTC) and Good-Till-Date (GTD) orders are not available under SEBI directives. Do not assume a stop will remain live indefinitely. Review the validity shown on the order ticket and re-enter a protection order when your broker or exchange requires it.

Before submitting, verify all of the following:

  • Exchange: NSE or BSE.
  • Instrument: equity, futures, or options.
  • Order type: SL or SL-M, if supported.
  • Product and quantity: delivery, intraday, or the applicable derivative contract.
  • Validity: the session or period shown by the broker.
  • Trigger and limit relationship: for a sell SL, the limit is normally below the trigger; for a buy SL, it is normally above.

Use SEBI account alerts as a separate safety net

SEBI advises investors to keep contact details current with the broker and depository participant and to enable account-activity SMS and email alerts. These messages help you detect orders, trades, or account changes. They are not substitutes for price-triggered alerts or stop-loss orders.

Account-alert checklist

  • Confirm your registered mobile number and email address.
  • Enable SMS and email notifications for order and account activity.
  • Check that alerts reach a device you can access during market hours.
  • Investigate any transaction you do not recognise through the broker and depository participant’s official channels.

Stop-loss and alert tools compared

Tool What starts it What happens next Documented scope or limits
Price alert Price or percentage threshold Push or email notification; no order unless connected to automation Kite documentation: free, up to 500 alerts, valid for 365 days
SL Trigger price Activates a limit order with separate trigger and limit prices Can remain unfilled if the market gaps beyond the limit
SL-M Trigger price Activates a market-style order at the prevailing price where supported NSE has discontinued SL-M for options; check the segment
Alert Trigger Order Configured alert condition Places linked orders with market-price protection Zerodha documents NSE/BSE equity and F&O support, up to 200 ATOs, and default day validity; corporate actions changing price by more than 2% can disable ATO alerts
SEBI account alert Account activity SMS or email record of activity Useful for account oversight, not a price-triggered exit

Worked setups

Long equity trade with a discretionary review

You buy 300 shares at ₹500 and identify ₹490 as the invalidation level. The price risk is ₹10 per share and the planned loss is ₹3,000 before any gap or execution difference. Set a price alert at ₹490 if you want to review the chart and news manually. If an automatic exit is required, place the appropriate sell SL or SL-M instead; do not rely on the notification alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long trade with a limit-protected exit

You buy at ₹500, choose a trigger at ₹490, and set a limit at ₹489. The order will not sell above the trigger simply because the trigger was reached; it sends the ₹489 limit after activation. A rapid move below ₹489 can leave the position open.

Short trade

You short at ₹500 and define ₹510 as the invalidation level. A buy stop belongs above the market. If you use an SL order, the buy limit should be placed above the trigger so that an activated order has room to fill. Confirm the exact field relationship shown by your broker before submitting.

Troubleshoot a missing alert or unfilled stop

The alert never arrived

  • Check that the alert is active and has not expired after its documented 365-day period.
  • Confirm the threshold property: a percentage condition is different from an absolute price condition.
  • Review push permissions, email filters, and the registered contact details.
  • Check whether the instrument underwent a corporate action that disabled an ATO alert.

The stop shows as triggered but not filled

  • For an SL, inspect the limit price and the current market. A gap may have moved the market beyond your limit.
  • Check available quantity and liquidity, especially in a thin stock or derivative.
  • Confirm whether the order is still open, partially filled, rejected, or cancelled.
  • If the plan allows it, cancel and replace only after reassessing the current price and risk; do not blindly duplicate orders.

The order type is unavailable

  • Verify the exchange and segment.
  • For options on NSE, remember that SL-M has been discontinued.
  • Review the broker’s current order ticket for the supported alternative and its trigger and limit requirements.

A pre-trade and post-entry checklist

  1. Write the invalidation price and maximum rupee loss.
  2. Estimate normal volatility and avoid a stop inside routine movement.
  3. Calculate quantity from rupee risk and the stop distance.
  4. Choose alert-only, SL, SL-M, or an ATO based on whether a human decision is required.
  5. Verify exchange, segment, quantity, trigger, limit, and validity.
  6. Confirm that push, email, SMS, and account-activity channels are enabled as appropriate.
  7. After entry, verify the order status and watch for partial fills, expiry, corporate-action changes, or a gap.

The practical rule is simple: use a price alert to tell you something happened; use a stop-loss or a properly configured linked order when the trade plan requires an attempted automatic exit. Neither tool eliminates gap or liquidity risk, so position size and the distance to the invalidation level remain the primary controls.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
