A stop-loss is a trading instruction; a price alert is a notification. A sell stop can turn into a market order when its trigger is reached, while an alert only tells you that a condition occurred so you can decide what to do. The stop price is not a guaranteed sale price. Fast markets, the broker’s trigger policy and the order type you choose can all affect the result.

This broker-neutral guide explains how to enter each feature without assuming a particular app, account type or jurisdiction. Screens and labels differ by investment firm, so use your broker’s current order ticket and help pages for the final clicks.

Stop-loss and price alert: the essential difference

Use a stop order when you want your brokerage account to send a trade instruction if a specified price condition is met. Use a price alert when you want a message that prompts you to review the position yourself. An alert does not sell shares automatically.

Feature What it does What happens at the trigger Main limitation
Sell stop Submits an instruction to sell a long position if the stop condition is reached. The stop order becomes a market order. The execution price can be different from the stop price.
Buy stop Submits an instruction to buy when the price rises to the stop level; it can be used to enter or cover a position, subject to your broker’s rules. The stop order becomes a market order. The fill is not guaranteed at the stop price.
Sell stop-limit Activates a sale while specifying the lowest price you are willing to accept. The order becomes a limit order. It may remain unfilled if the market moves below your limit.
Price alert Sends an account notification when the firm’s chosen condition is met. You receive a notification through the delivery methods the firm supports. Availability, conditions, delivery and timing vary by investment firm.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) states that “the stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” Its Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders Investor Bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, explains that a stop order becomes a market order after the stop price is reached.

How a stop order works

Sell stops for a long position

If you own shares and want a protective exit below the current market, you normally enter a sell stop below the current market price. For example, if a stock is trading at $50, a sell stop could be entered at a lower price you have selected. The number is an order setting, not a universal risk rule: the SEC guidance explains mechanics and risks but does not prescribe a suitable percentage or dollar distance for every investor.

Buy stops

A buy stop is entered above the current market price. Depending on the strategy and account permissions, it can be used to enter a position after an upward move or to cover a short position. Short-sale requirements, borrowing availability and order permissions are firm- and account-specific, so confirm that your account is eligible before submitting one.

Trigger is not fill

When the stop condition is met, the broker routes or activates a market order. A market order seeks execution at the best available price, but the price can move between the trigger and the fill. Gaps, thin trading, news and rapid price changes can produce a fill substantially different from the stop level. Intraday fluctuations can also trigger a stop and result in an execution that is much worse than the eventual closing price. These risks are described in the SEC’s stop-order bulletin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop versus stop-limit

A stop-limit adds a second price: the stop that activates the order and the limit that controls the least favorable price at which you will accept a fill. Once triggered, it becomes a limit order rather than a market order.

Decision factor Stop (stop-market) Stop-limit
Execution-price control No guaranteed execution price after triggering. Limits execution to the limit price or better.
Chance of an executed trade Generally more likely to execute after triggering, but the price can be unfavorable. Can remain unfilled if the market moves away from the limit.
Prices you must enter One stop price. A stop price and a limit price; the broker’s ticket determines which relationship is permitted.
Trigger standard May be based on last-sale data or quotations, depending on the firm. May also depend on the firm’s last-sale or quotation policy.
Duration Day or good-til-canceled (GTC) instructions may be offered, with firm-specific limits. Day or GTC instructions may be offered, with firm-specific limits.

The SEC’s Understanding Order Types Investor Bulletin notes that order types, trigger standards and time instructions differ among brokerage firms. A stop-limit can reduce the risk of accepting a very low fill, but it cannot guarantee that you will sell.

Decide what you are trying to accomplish before entering an order

Define the position and the action

  • Identify the exact security, listing and share quantity. Similar symbols can represent different securities or exchanges.
  • Confirm whether you own a long position, are trying to enter a new position or have a short position that requires different permissions.
  • Choose whether your priority is a higher likelihood of execution after a trigger or tighter control over the minimum acceptable price. That is the central stop-versus-stop-limit trade-off.

Check firm and account support

Not every broker supports every order type for every security, session or account. Some firms restrict stop orders on certain securities, require an eligible market session, or apply special rules to extended-hours trading. Read the order-ticket disclosures and the firm’s order-type documentation before relying on the instruction.

Do not treat a stop as a personal risk calculation

A stop level should reflect your own plan, time horizon, position size and tolerance for loss. There is no evidence in the cited SEC material for one universally appropriate percentage or dollar distance. Avoid copying a fixed number simply because it is common online.

How to set a stop order in a brokerage account

The exact controls depend on the broker. The following sequence describes the information you should locate in the stock order ticket rather than promising a universal button path.

  1. Open the stock order ticket. Start from the position or trading screen for the security. Verify the symbol, exchange or listing and whether you are entering a sell or buy order.
  2. Select the supported stop instruction. Look for a label such as “stop,” “stop market” or “stop-limit.” If the firm uses a different name, open its definition before proceeding.
  3. Enter the quantity. Specify the number of shares, or the quantity format the ticket accepts. Check whether the order is for all shares or only part of the position.
  4. Enter the stop price. For a long-position protective sell stop, the stop is normally below the current market; for a buy stop, it is normally above the current market. Do not assume the displayed quote is the trigger standard the firm will use.
  5. If using stop-limit, enter the limit price. Read the ticket’s explanation of how the stop and limit relate. A limit that is too restrictive can leave the order open without a fill.
  6. Choose the time instruction. Select the available duration, such as Day or GTC. GTC expiration limits vary by firm, so record the firm’s stated expiration date or maximum duration.
  7. Review trigger and session rules. Check whether the order can trigger during regular trading hours, extended hours or only a specified session. Confirm whether the firm uses last-sale prices, quotations or another stated standard.
  8. Preview and submit. Review the estimated order details, disclosures, quantity, prices and duration. Submit only after the ticket shows the intended instruction.
  9. Verify the status. Return to open orders and confirm that the order is accepted and active, not rejected, canceled or pending a condition. Save the confirmation and note any expiration or replacement requirement.

How to set a stock-price alert

Price-alert availability varies by investment firm. The SEC’s Protecting Your Online Investment Accounts from Fraud Investor Bulletin explains that account-alert features are not identical across firms. Because no broker is specified here, use this broker-neutral workflow:

  1. Open the firm’s alert or notification area. It may be located in a watchlist, a position page, account settings or a separate alerts center.
  2. Select the stock. Confirm the symbol and listing so the notification applies to the security you actually own.
  3. Choose the condition offered. Common choices may include price crossing above or below a target, but the available conditions and whether they use last-sale or quote data are firm-specific.
  4. Enter the target value. Check the currency, decimal precision and whether the alert is one-time, recurring or valid only for a period shown by the firm.
  5. Select delivery methods. Choose the supported in-app, email, text or push options. Review notification permissions on your device if a push alert is important.
  6. Save and verify activation. Confirm that the alert appears as active in the alert list. A saved draft, muted notification or disabled device permission is not a working alert.

An alert is a prompt to reassess the position. It does not place an order, reserve shares or guarantee that you will see the message before the price changes again.

How brokers decide whether a stop has triggered

Two firms can show the same stock quote yet apply different trigger rules. A broker may use last-sale prices, bid or ask quotations, or another rule described in its order documentation. The SEC’s order-types bulletin and stop-order bulletin both advise investors to check the firm’s specific policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters during a brief quote movement. A displayed last trade might not be the same value as the bid or ask that your firm uses for activation. Read the broker’s definitions for regular-hours and extended-hours trading, and do not infer the rule from another platform’s behavior.

Day and good-til-canceled instructions

A Day order normally expires according to the firm’s trading-day rules if it has not triggered or filled. A GTC order can remain active beyond one session, but the maximum duration, automatic cancellation date and treatment during corporate actions vary by brokerage. “GTC” is not a universal promise that an order remains open indefinitely.

Before a GTC stop is allowed to continue, review the position after earnings, splits, mergers, symbol changes and major company news. A stop that made sense for the original share count or price context may no longer match your plan. If the broker cancels an order after a corporate action, you must decide whether to enter a new one.

Worked examples (for mechanics, not recommendations)

Stop-market example

Assume, purely as an illustration, that you own 100 shares and enter a sell stop at $45 while the stock is trading above that level. If the broker’s trigger condition is reached, the order becomes a market order. The stock could be trading at $44.80, $43 or another available price when execution occurs; $45 is the trigger, not a guaranteed sale price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop-limit example

Suppose the same hypothetical position uses a $45 stop and a $44.50 limit. After the stop triggers, the order can fill only at $44.50 or better under the broker’s rules. If the stock gaps below $44.50 and no buyer accepts that price, the order can remain unfilled while the market continues lower. The example demonstrates the execution-versus-price-control trade-off; it does not identify a suitable level.

Alert-only example

If you create an alert for a move below $45, the platform may notify you when its condition is met. You then review news, liquidity, the position and your plan before deciding whether to submit an order. The alert itself does not sell the 100 shares.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Assuming the stop price is the fill price. Read the market-order disclosure and plan for possible slippage, especially in a fast or gapping market.
  • Using a stop-limit as if it guarantees an exit. Check open orders after a trigger; an unfilled limit order can leave the position exposed.
  • Entering the wrong direction. A sell stop for a long position is below the current market; a buy stop is above it. Recheck the action, quantity and symbol before submission.
  • Copying another broker’s trigger rule. Verify whether your firm uses last-sale prices, quotations or another standard.
  • Ignoring duration. Confirm whether a Day order expired or a GTC order reached its firm-specific maximum duration.
  • Expecting alerts to execute trades. Treat an alert as a reminder to review, not as an automated exit.
  • Relying on one notification channel. Confirm that the alert is active and that device permissions, email filters or text-message settings will not suppress it.
  • Forgetting partial-position intent. A quantity error can close the whole position or leave more shares exposed than planned.
  • Leaving stale orders after changing the plan. Cancel or replace an order deliberately and verify the new status; do not assume editing a position automatically edits its stop.
  • Assuming every security supports stops. Check the ticket for eligibility, session restrictions and any security-specific warning.

Using a stop and an alert together

The two tools can complement each other when their jobs remain separate. A stop can provide a predefined trading instruction, while an alert can draw your attention to a different level, an approaching event or a condition that requires judgment. For example, an investor might use an active stop for a planned downside exit and a higher alert to prompt a review after a large move. The levels and actions must come from the investor’s own plan; the SEC guidance does not establish a universal combination.

After entering both, maintain two separate records: the order status and the alert status. If you cancel the stop, the alert does not replace it. If you disable the alert, the stop can still trigger. Verify each independently in its respective list.

Account-security alerts are different from price alerts

Brokerages may also offer login, password-change, transfer or suspicious-activity notifications. Those are security controls, not market-price alerts. Keep them enabled when available and learn how the firm asks you to report an unauthorized event. The SEC’s account-protection bulletin emphasizes that alert availability differs by investment firm, so review the security settings separately from trading alerts.

Broker-neutral verification checklist

  • Correct security symbol and listing confirmed.
  • Buy or sell direction matches the position.
  • Share quantity is intentional.
  • Stop or stop-limit type is supported for this security and account.
  • Stop price and, if applicable, limit price are entered in the correct currency and decimal format.
  • Trigger standard and trading-session eligibility are understood.
  • Day or GTC duration and expiration rules are recorded.
  • Order preview shows the intended details and disclosures.
  • Open-order status shows accepted and active after submission.
  • Price alert condition, delivery method and active status are verified separately.
  • Device, email or text permissions allow notifications to arrive.
  • Position changes, corporate actions and plan changes will prompt a fresh review.

What to check in official guidance
