To set a stop-loss, open your holding or order ticket, choose a supported stop order, enter a trigger price, review the order details, and confirm it is accepted. A stop order is not a guaranteed sale at the price you enter. A price alert is different: it notifies you when a chosen threshold is reached but does not, by itself, place a trade. The exact screens and rules depend on your brokerage app.
How to set a stop-loss order in a trading app
These are general checks, not guaranteed menu instructions: the app, brokerage, country, and account type are unspecified. Use your brokerage’s current order ticket and official help pages to confirm its available orders, trigger rules, and trading-hour policies.

- Open the stock holding or trade/order ticket. Confirm the symbol, share quantity, and whether you are selling an owned position or managing a short position.
- Choose the order type. For an owned long position, a sell stop is generally placed below the current market price. For a short position, a buy stop is generally placed above it.
- Enter the stop price. For a stop-limit order, enter its separate limit price too. The stop price is the trigger, not a promised sale price.
- Review the duration or time-in-force, eligible trading hours, trigger method, quantity, and order summary. Brokerage firms may offer different order types and trigger conditions; ask yours how it handles them, especially in volatile markets.
- Before submitting, verify the side, quantity, order type, trigger, limit price if applicable, and duration. After submission, check that the order is shown as open or accepted. If it is rejected or unavailable, do not assume it is protecting your position.
FINRA defines a stop order as an order that becomes a market order when its stop price is reached. FINRA’s order-types guide and the SEC’s Investor Bulletin on stop, stop-limit, and trailing stop orders explain the mechanics and note that availability and policies can vary by firm.

| Order type | What happens when triggered | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stop order | Becomes a market order. | Prioritizes submitting an order for execution, but the sale price can differ significantly from the stop price in a fast-moving market. |
| Stop-limit order | Becomes a limit order at the specified limit price. | Sets a boundary on the acceptable sale price, but the order may not execute if the market moves past that price. |
Neither type guarantees a particular outcome. FINRA’s March 26, 2025 guidance on stop orders in volatile markets explains that a sharp or temporary move can trigger a stop, and the stock may later rebound. Once a trade executes, you cannot simply undo it.

Trailing stops are a separate variant
A trailing stop adjusts its stop level as the market moves, using a specified dollar amount or percentage under the brokerage’s terms. Not every app offers one, and its operation depends on the firm’s rules. Check the official order description before using it.
How to set a stock price alert
If your app offers price alerts, use its alert feature separately from the order ticket. Choose the stock and the threshold you want to be notified about, then check the app’s instructions for how alerts are delivered, whether notifications must be enabled, and whether the alert expires. These details are app-specific and are not established for any particular interface here.

An alert is intended to inform you; a stop order is a trading instruction that may result in a trade after its trigger is reached. Do not treat an alert as protection for a position or assume that setting one submits an order.

There is no universal percentage or price that is right for every stock or investor. The mechanics indicate direction, not suitability: a sell stop for an owned long position is generally below the current market, while a buy stop for a short position is generally above it. Choose a level in line with your own plan and risk tolerance, and verify the order details and potential risks with your brokerage. The cited regulatory guidance explains order mechanics and risks; it does not establish a personally suitable or statistically optimal level.

Check the brokerage’s trigger and availability rules
Brokerages can differ in the order types they accept, how they define a trigger event, and when orders are eligible to trigger. FINRA Rule 5350 defines stop orders and addresses firm acceptance and trigger-event disclosures. Read the rule and your brokerage’s own instructions rather than assuming that another app’s behavior applies to yours.
