The practical sequence is: choose the price that invalidates your trade, measure its distance from entry in Nifty points, multiply that distance by the current Nifty futures lot quantity, and then round down the number of lots that fits your rupee loss limit. Margin is collateral required to carry the contract; it is not the maximum you can lose. A gap or fast market can also produce a fill worse than the stop trigger, so the calculation is an estimate rather than a guaranteed loss cap.
This is an educational framework, not an individualized trading recommendation. Contract quantity, margin, charges and execution rules can change. Confirm the active contract and current disclosures with NSE and your broker immediately before sending an order.

What you are sizing in a Nifty futures trade
Nifty 50 futures are exchange-traded index futures whose underlying is the Nifty 50. NSE identifies the instrument type as FUTIDX. The contract specification describes three consecutive monthly futures contracts. Expiry is the last Tuesday of the expiry month, or the preceding trading day when that Tuesday is a trading holiday. Check the contract actually available in your trading platform rather than assuming that the nearest calendar month is active.
The quantity in one lot is not a permanent number to copy from an old article. NSE publishes permitted lot-size and quantity-freeze data, and the applicable quantity can change. Read the current file for the exact contract and trading date. Every risk calculation below depends on that number.

How to set the invalidation point before the stop order
A stop-loss should sit at the price where the reason for entering the trade is no longer valid. Write the entry idea and that invalidation level before deciding how many lots to buy or sell. Position size chosen first can tempt you to move a stop closer merely to make the trade fit.
Long futures
For a planned long entry, use:
stop distance = planned entry price − stop price
The result must be a positive number of index points. For example, an entry at 22,000 with an invalidation level at 21,940 gives a 60-point distance.
Short futures
For a planned short entry, use:
stop distance = stop price − planned entry price
A short entered at 22,000 with invalidation at 22,060 also has a 60-point distance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse one price scale consistently
If the stop is placed on the futures contract, measure both entry and stop from the futures price. Do not silently combine a spot-index level with a futures quote; the basis between them can make the distance different. If your method references the spot index for analysis, translate the invalidation level into the futures price you will actually trade and document the assumption.
There is no universally correct number of points for a Nifty stop. A structure or thesis-based stop may be far from entry in a volatile session, while a fixed-point stop may be tighter. The level must come from the strategy; the formulas only translate that decision into money.
Convert stop distance into rupee risk per lot
Futures exposure is linear. Ignoring costs and execution slippage, the planned gross price loss for one lot is:

Illustrative arithmetic only
Suppose, purely as a hypothetical example, that the contract quantity were 50 units and the stop were 40 points away. The gross price risk would be:
40 × 50 = ₹2,000 per lot
The figures 50 and 40 are arithmetic illustrations, not the current Nifty lot size and not a suggested stop. Replace both with live contract data and your own invalidation level.
| Input | Illustrative value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Planned entry | 22,000 | Futures price at entry |
| Long stop | 21,960 | Trade is invalid 40 points lower |
| Stop distance | 40 points | 22,000 − 21,960 |
| Hypothetical units per lot | 50 | Must be replaced by current NSE quantity |
| Gross price loss per lot | ₹2,000 | 40 × 50, before costs and slippage |
Set a rupee risk limit independently of margin
Choose the maximum planned loss for this single trade from your own finances, trading plan and ability to withstand a losing sequence. No universal percentage or rupee amount is suitable for every reader. Decide this ceiling before looking at the margin figure shown by the broker.

NSE Clearing describes online SPAN-based margining and upfront initial-margin collection. Its margin methodology states that initial margin is generally based on a 99% value-at-risk measure over a one-day horizon; for futures where mark-to-market settlement cannot be collected before the next trading day, the stated horizon is two days. Those are exchange risk-management calculations, not a personal stop-loss budget.

The amount paid as initial margin can be much smaller than the notional value controlled. A move through the stop, an overnight gap, or additional mark-to-market demand can therefore create a loss larger than the original margin amount. Keep enough free funds for the required margin and adverse mark-to-market movement in addition to the planned trade-risk limit.
Calculate the whole-lot position size
Include a per-lot allowance for brokerage, exchange and statutory charges, taxes where applicable, and realistic slippage. Exact totals depend on your broker, account and execution. A conservative sizing equation is:
lots = floor(rupee risk limit ÷ (stop distance × units per lot + per-lot cost and slippage allowance))

Worked hypothetical example
Assume a trader has a ₹10,000 maximum planned loss, a 40-point stop, a hypothetical 50-unit lot and an allowance of ₹200 per lot for costs and slippage:
- Gross price risk per lot:
40 × 50 = ₹2,000. - Budgeted all-in risk per lot:
₹2,000 + ₹200 = ₹2,200. - Raw lot count:
₹10,000 ÷ ₹2,200 = 4.54. - Permitted whole-lot count:
floor(4.54) = 4 lots. - Budget used by four lots:
4 × ₹2,200 = ₹8,800, leaving ₹1,200 of the stated cap unused.
This example does not describe a current contract or a recommended trade. Its purpose is to show why the risk limit is divided by estimated loss per lot and why the answer is rounded down.

When the calculation gives less than one lot
If the result is below one, the trade does not fit the chosen loss limit at that stop distance and current contract quantity. The defensible choices are:
- Skip the trade.
- Use a smaller stop distance only if the original thesis still remains valid at that closer level; do not move the stop solely to force a one-lot position.
- Reassess the strategy or account size outside this individual trade rather than exceeding the preset cap.
Stop approaches and the trade-offs they create
No single stop methodology is endorsed for every strategy. Compare the alternatives by how faithfully they invalidate the idea, how much rupee risk they create, and how they behave during execution.
| Approach | How it is chosen | Effect on sizing | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thesis or structure invalidation | Beyond a support, resistance, swing point or other level that disproves the setup | Distance varies with market structure; a wide stop may permit fewer lots | Does the level truly invalidate the idea, and is the resulting risk affordable? |
| Fixed-point stop | A predetermined number of index points from entry | Easy to calculate, but the same distance may be too tight in one regime and too wide in another | Does current volatility make the fixed distance vulnerable to ordinary movement? |
| Stop-market order | Prioritizes an exit after the trigger is reached | Usually preserves the intended exit process but exposes the trade to slippage | How much adverse movement can the account tolerate if the fill is worse? |
| Stop-limit order | Sets both a trigger and a maximum acceptable execution price | Can limit price slippage but may not fill in a fast market, leaving the position open | Is non-execution more dangerous than a worse fill for this strategy? |
Broker interfaces label and handle order types differently. Read your broker’s current contract notes and order documentation; do not assume a stop trigger guarantees a fill at that exact price.
Execution can make actual loss exceed the estimate
The formula assumes an exit at the planned stop. In a gap, a rapid move or a thin portion of the order book, the first available execution may be worse than the trigger. Slippage can also vary between contracts and expiry months. Treat the calculated amount as an estimate and include a realistic allowance when deciding the lot count.
A stop order is a process for attempting to exit, not an insurance policy. Do not increase lots because historical fills happened close to the trigger, and do not assume that an overnight stop will behave like an intraday stop during a discontinuous move.

Eight-step workflow before placing an order
- Write the setup. Record whether the trade is long or short, the planned entry and the condition that makes the idea invalid.
- Set the invalidation price. Choose the stop from the setup, not from the number of lots you hope to trade.
- Measure the distance. Use the long or short formula and express the result in positive futures index points.
- Verify the contract. Confirm the expiry month, current lot quantity and any quantity-freeze information in NSE’s current permitted-data file.
- Estimate one-lot loss. Multiply points by units per lot and add a per-lot allowance for costs and slippage.
- Apply the rupee cap. Divide your preset maximum loss by the all-in estimate and round down to a whole number.
- Check liquidity. Confirm that available funds can meet initial margin and potential mark-to-market demands without forcing an early exit elsewhere.
- Recheck at submission. Verify the live quote, expiry, order type, charges, stop level and lot count immediately before entry. If any input changed, run the calculation again.
Common sizing mistakes and how to correct them
Using yesterday’s lot size
Old spreadsheets and forum posts can retain a superseded quantity. Read the current NSE lot-size data for the exact contract date and update the multiplication before every new series.

Dividing by margin
Margin answers how much collateral the exchange requires, not how much loss your account can safely absorb. Replace a margin-based rule with a rupee risk cap and the stop-distance calculation.
Rounding up
A raw result such as 2.8 lots means two lots, not three. The third lot would exceed the stated estimate before any slippage.
Ignoring costs
Brokerage, exchange charges, taxes and slippage reduce the room under the risk cap. Use your broker’s current schedule and a deliberately conservative per-lot allowance.

Analysis on the spot index is not automatically the executable futures price. Convert the invalidation level to the same futures scale used for the order.
Moving the stop after entry
Widening a stop without reducing lots increases the planned rupee loss. If the thesis requires a wider level, cancel and resize rather than silently changing the risk.
Assuming a stop guarantees the trigger price
Fast markets and gaps can produce worse fills. Keep a liquidity buffer and regard the estimate as approximate.
Contract and account checks around expiry
NSE lists three consecutive monthly futures, with expiry on the last Tuesday of the month unless that day is a holiday. Before entry, confirm which monthly contract you selected, its quote, lot quantity and liquidity. A position held toward expiry may have different spread and execution characteristics from the next-month contract. Your broker may also apply its own policies for expiry-day trading, so read the current notice rather than relying on a prior series.
Recommended Free Tools
Margin rates and required funds can change as volatility and exchange parameters change. Recheck the broker’s live margin display and the exchange’s current information after placing an order as well as before it. Keep sufficient cash or approved collateral for mark-to-market movements; a position can become difficult to hold even when its original stop-based estimate appeared affordable.
A compact pre-trade worksheet
| Field | Your entry |
|---|---|
| Contract month and symbol | Record the exact futures contract |
| Direction | Long or short |
| Planned futures entry | Use the executable futures quote |
| Invalidation and stop price | Explain why the setup fails there |
| Stop distance | Entry minus stop for long; stop minus entry for short |
| Current units per lot | Copy from current NSE permitted lot-size data |
| Gross loss per lot | Distance × units |
| Cost and slippage allowance | Use current broker and exchange information |
| Maximum rupee loss | Set before calculating lots |
| Whole lots | Round down the division result |
| Margin and liquidity check | Confirm funds for initial margin and adverse mark-to-market |
| Order type and contingency | Know the fill and non-fill risks |
Keeping this worksheet with the order record makes it possible to distinguish a planned loss estimate from the eventual fill, charges and mark-to-market result. If any input is unknown, do not substitute a stale value or assume that margin supplies the answer; pause and obtain the current contract or broker figure.
