Set a stock alert for a price or percentage move that should trigger a planned review, not an automatic decision. Choose the trading sessions, repeat behavior, and delivery method deliberately. When the notification arrives, pause, check what caused the move, and compare the holding with your financial plan before changing anything.
An alert is only a notification. It does not place an order or guarantee an exit price. The exact controls vary by brokerage, account type, product, and jurisdiction.

What a stock price alert actually does
A stock-price alert watches a condition you define and sends a notification when that condition is met. The condition may be an absolute price, such as “notify me when shares fall below $80,” or a percentage move, such as “notify me after a 5% rise.” Depending on the brokerage, you may also find alerts for volume, company news, technical indicators, 52-week highs or lows, and moving averages.
The alert does not explain why the price moved, whether the move will continue, or what action is appropriate. It also does not sell your shares. A notification can arrive because of an earnings announcement, a broad market move, a temporary liquidity change, or an ordinary fluctuation. Treat it as a prompt to investigate, not as a buy or sell signal.

Alert, order, and stop order are different
A price alert is informational. A stop order is an instruction sent to a market. The SEC explains that, once triggered, a stop order becomes a market order, and the execution price can differ significantly from the stop price. The stop price is therefore a trigger, not a guaranteed sale price. A stop-limit order can restrict the acceptable execution price, but it may not execute at all. Both stop and stop-limit orders can be triggered by a brief intraday move.
Do not label a notification “stop loss” unless you are actually discussing an order. Keeping these concepts separate prevents an alert from being mistaken for portfolio protection or an automatic exit.
Decide what the alert should make you review
Before opening the alert menu, write one sentence describing the review you intend to perform. This simple step makes the alert part of a plan instead of a stream of prompts that demand an immediate reaction.

- Thesis review: “If the price reaches this level, I will reread why I bought and check whether those facts changed.”
- Material-news check: “If the stock moves this much, I will look for an earnings release, filing, guidance change, or other company announcement.”
- Allocation review: “If this position grows or shrinks enough to affect my target allocation, I will calculate the portfolio weights before deciding.”
- Time-horizon check: “If I feel pressure to act, I will compare the move with the time horizon in my plan rather than with a single day’s chart.”
These are planning applications of the SEC’s general investor guidance, not regulator-prescribed alert settings. The SEC recommends considering your time horizon, long-term goals, diversification, and asset allocation, then following a financial plan. It also warns that real-time social discussion and sentiment-driven indicators can encourage impulsive decisions.
How to set a stock price alert
Names and menu locations differ, but the workflow is similar on most brokerage websites and mobile apps. Fidelity, Webull, and Robinhood document price and percentage-change alert controls, while the additional options and labels differ.

- Open the security page. Search for the stock, open its quote or chart page, and look for an Alerts, bell, or notification control. Some platforms place the control in a watchlist row or account menu instead.
- Choose the trigger type. Select an absolute price above or below the current quote, or choose a percentage increase or decrease if the platform supports it. Other available choices may include volume, news, technical conditions, 52-week levels, or moving-average crossings.
- Enter the threshold. Use a level that has a defined purpose in your review plan. Confirm whether the platform interprets a percentage as a move from the current price, the prior close, or another reference point; the interface should state the basis.
- Select market-session coverage. Choose regular trading hours only unless you have a specific reason to monitor extended or overnight sessions. Some services let you include premarket, after-hours, or overnight activity; those quotes can be less liquid and more volatile.
- Set recurrence or frequency. Decide whether the alert should fire once, repeat whenever the condition is met, or remain active until you delete it. A repeating alert can produce several notices for the same unresolved event, while a one-time alert may require you to recreate it after it fires.
- Choose delivery. Select the channels offered by the brokerage, such as an in-app banner, mobile push notification, email, or text message. Check the app’s operating-system permissions, the email address or phone number on the account, and any quiet-hours settings.
- Save and verify. Review the summary before confirming. Make sure the direction, threshold, session, frequency, and destination are all correct. Then check the active-alert list so you know how the brokerage displays a pending alert.
Delivery is not guaranteed. Robinhood cautions that push delivery may fail, and Fidelity notes that wireless-provider fees may apply to some device notifications. A notification should supplement, not replace, your normal account and company-information checks.
Which alert trigger should you use?
There is no universal percentage or dollar distance that is suitable for every stock or investor. A volatile small company, a broad index fund, and a mature dividend payer can move by very different amounts in ordinary trading. The right threshold is the one that produces a useful review under your plan without turning routine noise into a command to act.
Absolute-price alerts
An absolute alert fires at a stated price, such as $100 or $75. It is useful when a price level has a specific meaning for your plan—for example, a planned allocation review or a valuation checkpoint. Because the reference does not automatically move with the market, you should revisit the level after a split, a major corporate action, or a material change in your assumptions.
Percentage-move alerts
A percentage alert follows the size of the move rather than a fixed dollar amount. It can be more comparable across holdings with different share prices, but the result depends on the platform’s reference price and reset rules. Ask whether the alert is measured from the prior close, from the time you create it, or on a rolling basis. Robinhood documents configurable 5% and 10% movement settings; those are product choices, not evidence that either percentage is appropriate for your portfolio.
Volume, news, and technical alerts
Volume alerts can identify unusually active trading but cannot tell you whether the activity is informed, speculative, or purely mechanical. News alerts can help you find an announcement quickly, yet headlines may omit context or arrive before you have the full filing. Technical alerts, 52-week levels, and moving-average conditions describe market behavior; they do not replace a review of the business, your objectives, or your diversification.

| Trigger | Useful when | Question to answer after it fires |
|---|---|---|
| Price above or below a level | A specific price would prompt a planned thesis or allocation review | Has the reason for owning the investment changed? |
| Percentage increase or decrease | You want a move-size prompt across holdings with different share prices | Is this move unusual for this security, or within its normal range? |
| Volume | You want to investigate an unusual change in trading activity | Is there a verified announcement or market event explaining it? |
| News | You need a prompt to read company or market information | What does the complete release or filing actually say? |
| Technical, high/low, or moving average | A chart condition is one input in your documented process | Does this condition alter the long-term plan, or only describe price behavior? |
Choose regular, extended, or overnight sessions carefully
Some brokerages let an alert cover regular hours only, extended hours, or overnight trading. Verify the active setting in your account rather than assuming that a quote screen and an alert use the same session.
Regular-hours alerts generally reduce the number of notifications caused by thin trading outside the main session. Extended and overnight alerts can provide earlier notice of earnings or overseas news, but prices may change rapidly with fewer participants and wider spreads. If you include those sessions, write down what you will do with an alert that occurs when the market is closed: for example, read the announcement and wait for regular-hours liquidity before evaluating an order.
Session coverage is separate from alert frequency. A one-time alert during overnight trading may disappear after firing; a recurring alert can continue to notify you each time the price crosses the condition. The setting should match the review you can realistically perform.
Use a pause-and-review routine when an alert arrives
A notification creates urgency by design. A short, repeatable routine gives you time to distinguish information from emotion.
- Pause before opening an order ticket. Silence or set aside the notification if necessary. The alert itself is not a deadline.
- Identify the exact condition. Note the price, percentage move, time, and session in which it triggered. Check whether the move is still occurring or has already reversed.
- Find a reliable explanation. Look for the company’s investor-relations release, regulatory filing, earnings information, or a broad market explanation. Do not rely on a social-media headline alone.
- Separate cause from quote movement. Ask whether the event affects revenue, costs, balance-sheet strength, competitive position, regulation, or another fact that mattered to your original decision. A price change without a changed fact is not automatically a changed thesis.
- Check the holding’s role. Compare the position with your intended allocation, diversification, liquidity needs, and time horizon. A move can make a position too large or too small even when the company’s long-term outlook is unchanged.
- Write the decision and reason. Record “no action,” “research further,” “rebalance under my plan,” or another conclusion with the evidence supporting it. If you cannot explain the decision in writing, wait.
- Review the alert afterward. Delete, edit, or recreate it according to your next review date. Confirm whether the brokerage removed it automatically or left it active.
Vanguard’s investor education advises stepping back from day-to-day noise and says, “Don’t let the day-to-day market noise send you off course.” It also states that if your reasons for investing have not changed and you have a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, and cash investments, doing nothing is usually best. That is general education, not a guarantee or individualized recommendation.

How to avoid reacting to every market move
Reduce notification volume
Set alerts only for conditions that would change a review you are prepared to conduct. Multiple overlapping alerts—such as 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% declines—can turn ordinary volatility into a continuous stream of prompts. Use one meaningful condition, or group alerts by purpose, and disable duplicates across your phone, email, and brokerage app.
Separate observation from action
Create two lists: events worth investigating and actions permitted by your plan. A 6% decline may belong on the investigation list because it prompts a news check. It does not automatically belong on the action list. This distinction prevents a threshold chosen for awareness from becoming an accidental trading rule.
Schedule reviews instead of watching continuously
If you are investing for years, decide when you will review the portfolio under normal conditions—monthly, quarterly, or at another interval consistent with your plan. Keep event-driven alerts for genuinely important conditions, such as a material announcement or a position moving outside an allocation range. Avoid opening a chart repeatedly between alerts; frequent checking can magnify the emotional effect of small moves.
Mute social urgency
The SEC cautions that real-time social discussion and sentiment indicators can encourage emotionally driven or impulsive decisions. Disable promotional or sentiment notifications that are not part of your written process. Read primary company information and your own records before reading commentary about what other traders are doing.
Brokerage feature differences to check
Official help pages from Fidelity, Webull, and Robinhood show that common controls exist, but they do not establish a universal interface or a best provider. Menus, supported securities, account types, delivery channels, and session coverage can change.
Best Value
| Feature to compare | Why it matters | What to verify in your account |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger types | Determines what events can start a review | Price, percentage, volume, news, technical, high/low, and moving-average choices |
| Reference and threshold | Changes when a percentage or price condition is considered met | Current quote, prior close, rolling window, tick size, and rounding rules |
| Trading sessions | Controls whether overnight or extended-hours moves can notify you | Regular, premarket, after-hours, and overnight coverage |
| Frequency | Controls repeated notices | Once, recurring, cooldown, or active-until-deleted behavior |
| Delivery | Determines how quickly and reliably you see the notice | In-app, push, email, text, permissions, contact details, and possible carrier fees |
| Persistence after triggering | Prevents a false assumption that the alert remains active | Whether it is removed, paused, or left active, and where to view active alerts |
Fidelity says its price-movement and percentage-change alerts are removed from active alerts after triggering, while its 52-week and moving-average alerts remain active until deleted. Other providers may behave differently, so inspect the active-alert list after every trigger.
Common problems and fixes
The alert never arrived
- Check that the alert is still active and that the trigger was reached during the selected session.
- Confirm mobile push permissions, email filters, phone numbers, and account contact details.
- Look in the brokerage’s in-app alert center; delivery can fail even when the condition was recorded.
- For text messages, check whether your wireless provider charges fees or blocks short-code messages.
You received too many alerts
- Change a recurring condition to one-time or increase the interval between notices if the platform offers a cooldown.
- Remove duplicate price and percentage alerts that prompt the same review.
- Limit coverage to regular hours if extended-session moves are not actionable for you.
The price crossed the level but did not trigger
- Check whether the quote reached the threshold during a covered session.
- Verify whether the platform uses last trade, bid, ask, midpoint, or another quote field.
- Review the security’s eligibility; some products or venues may not support every alert type.
- Confirm that the threshold was entered in the correct direction and currency.
The alert fired and disappeared
That may be normal. Some price and percentage alerts are one-time by design. Recreate the alert only after deciding what the next review condition should be; do not automatically restore the same threshold without checking whether your plan or holding has changed.
Review and maintain alerts as your plan changes
Alerts can become stale even when the underlying investment remains appropriate. Revisit them after a stock split, merger, major allocation change, change in time horizon, or revision to the investment thesis. A fixed dollar threshold may no longer represent the same percentage move after a split, and an alert created for a short-term event may be inappropriate for a long-term holding.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
At least once during your normal portfolio review, inspect the complete alert list. Delete conditions tied to securities you no longer own, consolidate duplicates, and confirm that contact details and device permissions are current. Record why each remaining alert exists and what decision it is meant to support.
Practical examples
Example: a planned thesis check
You own shares because you expect a company’s new product line to improve margins over several years. You set a below-price alert solely to prompt a check of the next earnings release and product update. When it fires, you read the release, compare the margin outlook with your original notes, and decide whether the long-term reason for owning the shares changed. The alert did not tell you to sell; it started the review you defined in advance.
Example: a percentage alert during extended hours
You configure a 5% movement alert that includes after-hours trading. It fires shortly after an earnings announcement. Instead of sending an immediate order, you verify the complete results, confirm whether the move occurred in thin trading, and wait for the regular-session context your plan requires. The percentage is a product setting, not a universal action threshold.
Example: an allocation check
A strong rally causes one holding to become a much larger share of your portfolio. A price alert prompts you to calculate the current allocation. If your written plan includes rebalancing bands, you follow those rules; if it does not, you document the issue and decide when to review it rather than selling solely because a notification appeared.

- A notification is not an order and cannot guarantee a price.
- There is no universally correct alert percentage or dollar threshold.
- Extended-hours and overnight conditions can behave differently from regular trading.
- News, volume, and technical signals require context; none independently explains the right action.
- The SEC’s January 29, 2021 investor alert says, “Do not let short-term emotions about investments disrupt your long-term financial objectives.”
- The SEC’s stop-order bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, states, “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.”
Use alerts to create a deliberate pause between a market move and a decision. That pause—combined with reliable information, a documented time horizon, diversification, and an allocation plan—helps keep routine volatility from taking control of your process.
