Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo set a stock alert, search for the ticker in your brokerage app, open the quote or watchlist menu, choose a price or percentage condition, select the direction and threshold, choose notification channels, and save it. Then confirm the rule appears in the app’s active-alert list.
An alert only tells you that a condition occurred. It does not buy or sell shares, limit a loss, or guarantee an execution price. When an alert fires, you still need to review the security, decide whether trading fits your plan, submit an order if appropriate, and verify the order’s status.

What a stock price alert does—and does not do
A stock price alert is a notification rule. You define a condition such as “the price reaches $X” or “the price changes by Y percent,” and the brokerage sends a message when its system determines that condition has occurred. Depending on the firm, delivery may use an in-app message center, push notification, email, text message, desktop platform, or more than one channel.
The alert does not place an order. It does not reserve a price, protect a position, prevent a loss, or guarantee that you will be able to trade before the market moves again. Treat it as a prompt to inspect the quote and your plan, not as an automatic risk-control mechanism.

Why the distinction matters
- If you intend to trade, you must open and review the order ticket yourself unless you separately create an order in advance.
- A notification can arrive after the price has moved away from the threshold.
- Market conditions, liquidity, trading hours, and your brokerage’s order policies affect what happens after you act.
- An alert can be active, triggered, paused, deleted, or removed from an active list depending on the platform.
Investor.gov advises investors: “Before you trade, know why you are buying or selling, and the risk of your investment.” That is a decision rule, not a prediction about where a stock will go.
Choose a useful alert before opening the app
A threshold is useful only if it answers a question in your investment plan. Write down what you will review when the notification arrives before choosing the number.
Price-level alerts
A price alert fires when the security reaches a specified level, with a direction such as above, below, crosses, or reaches depending on the app. A level above the current quote can flag a possible breakout or a price at which you want to reassess. A level below the quote can prompt a review of earnings, news, valuation, or your original thesis.

Percentage-change alerts
A percentage condition can be more portable across securities with very different share prices. It may be based on a daily move, a move from a reference price, or another platform-defined calculation. Read the app’s condition description so you know what period and reference it uses.
Event and technical alerts
Some platforms offer triggers for earnings, news, 52-week highs or lows, moving averages, volume, or other indicators. Fidelity’s Active Trader help documents price-movement, percentage-change, 52-week high/low, and EMA triggers, but those controls are platform-specific and do not establish that every Fidelity mobile interface—or any other brokerage app—offers the same choices.

Set a threshold that you can act on
- Use a level that would change your next review, rather than a number selected only because it is round.
- Decide whether the alert is for an entry review, a portfolio review, an earnings check, or a risk review.
- Consider the stock’s normal volatility and trading hours. A threshold that is too close to the current quote may trigger on ordinary noise.
- Do not treat an alert level as a universal stop percentage or position-size rule. The appropriate threshold depends on your plan, time horizon, finances, and risk tolerance.
Generic setup process in most brokerage apps
Labels differ by firm and by iOS, Android, web, or advanced-trading interface. The following sequence is a navigation pattern, not a guarantee that every app has each control.
- Find the security. Search for the company or fund by its ticker and select the correct listing. Confirm the exchange and security type before creating the rule.
- Open an alert entry point. Look in the quote screen, watchlist row, bell icon, overflow menu, or a profile/settings area named Alerts or Stock Alerts.
- Choose the condition. Select a target price, percentage move, high/low, technical indicator, news, earnings, or another option the app actually provides.
- Choose the direction and reference. If offered, specify above, below, crossing, up, down, daily change, or another defined direction. Read any explanation of the reference price or measurement period.
- Enter the trigger. Type the threshold using the app’s required decimal precision. Check that you did not accidentally enter a dollar amount where a percentage is required.
- Select delivery channels. Enable the available push, email, text, message-center, or desktop notifications. Device permissions and account-level notification settings can affect delivery.
- Save the rule. Tap or click the control labeled Set Alert, Save, Create, or equivalent.
- Verify it. Reopen the active-alert list and confirm the ticker, condition, direction, threshold, recurrence, and notification channel. Do not assume that leaving the creation screen means the rule was saved.
Documented example: create a target-price alert in Schwab Mobile
Schwab’s published mobile instructions provide a concrete example. The exact labels and path below apply to Schwab Mobile, not to every brokerage.
- Open Markets.
- Search for the stock symbol and select the security quote.
- Tap Set an Alert.
- Choose Target price.
- Select the available price type and direction.
- Enter the target price.
- Tap Set Alert.
Check or change a Schwab Mobile alert
To review open rules, go to Profile > Stock Alerts. Open an alert and choose Edit alert to change its trigger. Schwab displays triggered alerts in a separate tab and says successfully triggered mobile alerts are retained for up to 30 days.
Schwab also states that Schwab Mobile alerts do not synchronize with alerts created in thinkorswim or on Schwab.com. If you use more than one Schwab platform, inspect each platform’s alert list rather than assuming one list is complete.
How alert behavior differs by platform
Two alerts that look similar can behave differently after they fire. Confirm the recurrence and history rules in your own app.

| Platform or example | Documented conditions or entry points | After triggering | Delivery or synchronization notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schwab Mobile | Quote, watchlist, profile, and other entry points; the documented quote path uses Target price with a price type and direction. | Triggered alerts appear in a separate tab; successfully triggered mobile alerts are retained for up to 30 days. | Mobile alerts do not synchronize with thinkorswim or Schwab.com alerts. |
| Fidelity Active Trader help | Price movement, percentage change, 52-week high/low, and EMA triggers are documented for that platform. | Price-movement and percentage-change alerts are removed from the active list after triggering; 52-week high/low and EMA alerts can remain active and trigger again. | Documentation describes Message Center delivery, with optional desktop-platform, email, or mobile-device delivery, plus active-trigger management and history. |
| Schwab desktop securities alerts | Price/volume, earnings, news, and research alert categories are documented separately from Schwab Mobile. | Active alerts can be deleted; a temporary vacation hold is documented. | Do not assume desktop rules synchronize with Schwab Mobile. |
The Fidelity and Schwab behaviors above come from their respective platform documentation. They should not be generalized to another firm, app version, or account type.
What to do when the notification arrives
Use the notification as the beginning of a review, not as an instruction to trade immediately.
- Open the brokerage app directly. Avoid relying only on a lock-screen preview. Confirm the ticker, quote, time, and whether the market is open.
- Identify the condition that fired. Check whether it was a price, percentage, technical, news, or event rule and whether the value is a last-sale, quote, or platform-defined measurement.
- Review current information. Check the security page, relevant filings or company news available in the app, the bid-ask spread, and any earnings or corporate-action information you normally consider.
- Revisit your reason for acting. Decide whether the event changes your thesis or merely reflects short-term movement. Investor.gov’s reminder to know why you are buying or selling applies here.
- Choose an action. You may do nothing, update your research, place an order, revise the alert, or cancel it.
- If you trade, review the complete ticket. Confirm buy or sell, quantity, order type, limit or stop values, time-in-force, and the account.
- Submit only after checking the ticket. Then inspect the order-status screen for submitted, partially filled, filled, canceled, rejected, or another status.
- Confirm cancellations. Investor.gov warns that assuming an order was canceled or executed can lead to an unintended duplicate transaction. Verify the cancellation before placing a replacement order.
Alerts versus order types
An alert tells you to look. An order contains instructions that may be sent to the market. The following distinctions describe the mechanics documented by Investor.gov and brokerage guidance; they are not recommendations for a particular security.
| Order or tool | What happens | Main control | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price alert | Sends a notification when the defined condition occurs. | Awareness and review. | Does not submit a trade or guarantee a price. |
| Buy limit order | Can execute only at the limit price or lower. | Constrains the maximum acceptable buy price. | There is no guarantee of a fill. |
| Sell limit order | Can execute only at the limit price or higher. | Constrains the minimum acceptable sale price. | There is no guarantee of a fill. |
| Stop order | When the stop price is reached, the order becomes a market order. | Creates a trigger intended to activate an order. | The execution price can differ materially from the stop price, especially during fast moves or limited liquidity. |
| Stop-limit order | When the stop price is reached, the order becomes a limit order. | Sets an acceptable execution-price boundary after triggering. | The order can remain unfilled if the market moves beyond the limit. |
| Trailing stop | The stop follows the market by a specified dollar or percentage amount when prices move favorably, then stays fixed when prices move adversely. | Adjusts the trigger as the market moves in the favorable direction. | A short-term fluctuation can trigger it, and the final execution price can still differ from the trigger. |
The stop price is a trigger, not a promise
The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance, in the Investor.gov bulletin “Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders” updated August 18, 2026, states: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” The bulletin explains that a stop order becomes a market order when triggered.
A fast price move, a gap, or insufficient available liquidity can produce a fill substantially away from the trigger. Brokerage firms may use last-sale prices or quotation prices to determine whether a stop condition has been reached. Read your firm’s order policy to learn which standard applies and whether it differs by security or order type.

Stop-limit trade-off
A stop-limit order gives you a price boundary that a stop-market order does not, but the protection comes with execution risk. If the market moves through the limit without trading at an acceptable price, you may have no fill. Decide which risk matters more in your plan: an uncertain execution price or a possible non-execution.
Trailing-stop trade-off
A trailing stop can adjust after favorable movement, but it remains vulnerable to ordinary volatility. A brief decline can trigger the order even if the price later recovers. It is not a guarantee against losses or a substitute for deciding how much risk you can accept.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Duration, recurrence, and order status
Alert recurrence
Some alerts fire once and disappear from the active list. Others remain active and can trigger repeatedly. Fidelity’s Active Trader documentation gives a platform-specific example: price-movement and percentage-change alerts are removed after triggering, while 52-week high/low and EMA alerts can remain active. Your app may use different rules, so inspect the active list after every trigger.
Order time-in-force
Day orders generally expire after the trading day. Good-til-canceled duration limits depend on the brokerage. Before submitting an order, verify the time-in-force shown on the ticket and later verify whether the order remains open, filled, partially filled, canceled, or rejected.
Do not duplicate an order accidentally
A delayed screen, lost connection, or ambiguous notification can make it unclear whether an order was accepted. Check the order-status page and confirm a cancellation before sending a replacement. If the status is unclear, contact the brokerage rather than assuming no trade occurred.

Risk management around alerts
Risk management is the plan surrounding the alert, not the alert itself. Before saving a rule, define what information you will check, what would invalidate your thesis, and what action—if any—you are prepared to take.
- Separate monitoring from execution. Keep the alert threshold and any order price as distinct decisions.
- Account for volatility. A narrow threshold may be reached during routine fluctuations. A wider threshold may reduce noise but delay your review.
- Review liquidity and spreads. Thin trading can make execution prices less predictable and can increase the chance that a stop-limit order remains unfilled.
- Check trading hours. Confirm whether the alert can trigger outside regular hours and whether the related order type is accepted during those sessions.
- Avoid universal percentages. Official investor-education guidance explains order mechanics, not a suitable stop percentage, price buffer, or position size for you.
- Reassess after corporate events. Earnings, splits, dividends, and other events can change the context of a price threshold. Update or cancel stale alerts.
Brokerage order availability and policies vary. Read the firm’s current disclosures and consider your own plan and risk tolerance before using any order type.
Account-security alerts are a separate layer
Market-price alerts help you monitor an investment. Account-security alerts help you detect unauthorized access or activity. The SEC investor bulletin on account security lists examples firms may offer:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Login attempts
- Password or personal-information changes
- Securities transactions
- Money or securities transfers
Availability and activation steps vary by brokerage. Look in Security, Privacy, Notifications, or Profile settings and enable the strongest options available. The SEC bulletin also advises using multi-factor authentication when available and unique passwords for financial accounts.
Do not confuse a legitimate trading notification with a security alert. If you receive an unexpected transaction or transfer message, sign in through the firm’s official app or website, review account activity, and contact the brokerage using its verified support channel.
Troubleshoot a missing or unexpected alert
No notification arrived
- Open the active-alert list and confirm the rule was saved and has not expired.
- Check whether the condition actually occurred under the app’s price or percentage definition.
- Review phone notification permissions, email filters, text-message settings, and in-app Message Center activity.
- Confirm that the alert is tied to the correct ticker and account.
- Check whether the platform supports alerts during the session in which the move occurred.
The alert triggered too soon
- Review whether the app uses last-sale or quotation prices.
- Check whether the rule was based on an intraday move, a percentage reference, or a technical indicator.
- Look for a brief price spike or a wide bid-ask spread.
- Recreate the alert only after understanding the trigger definition.
The alert disappeared
- Some rules are one-time alerts and are removed after triggering.
- Some platforms move triggered rules into a history or triggered tab.
- A platform may retain triggered alerts for a limited period; Schwab documents up to 30 days for successfully triggered mobile alerts.
- Check whether the rule was deleted, paused, or placed on a temporary hold.
You use multiple brokerage platforms
Do not assume synchronization. Schwab explicitly says Schwab Mobile alerts do not synchronize with thinkorswim or Schwab.com. Maintain a separate inventory of alerts when you use multiple interfaces.
