To set a stock price alert, open the stock’s quote page, choose its alert option, enter a target price, and save. Then check that the app and your device allow the chosen notification. An alert tells you a condition was met; it does not tell you why the price moved or whether you should trade.
How to create a basic stock price alert
In most investing apps, start by finding the stock and opening its quote page. Look for an option labeled Alerts or Set an Alert, choose a trigger, enter the price, and save. The exact menu and available alert types depend on the service, region, and account.

Schwab Mobile
- Go to Markets, search for the security, and select it.
- Choose Set an Alert, then Target price.
- Select the price type and direction, enter the target, and save. The same alert screen also offers news and event alerts, including earnings releases.
- To manage alerts, open Profile > Stock Alerts. Open alerts can be edited; triggered alerts appear in a separate tab. Schwab says successfully triggered alerts are kept for up to 30 days. Schwab: How to Set Stock Alerts.
Schwab Mobile alerts do not synchronize with thinkorswim or Schwab.com, according to Schwab. If you use more than one of those products, check each one rather than assuming an alert created in one will appear in another. Schwab: How to Set Stock Alerts.

Choose a trigger that matches what you want to monitor
A target price is only one kind of alert. Fidelity describes four alert types in its July 27, 2026 article: a specified price, a percentage change since the previous close, a crossing of an exponential moving average (EMA), and a 52-week high or low. Fidelity discusses 20-, 50-, and 200-day EMAs, which give greater weight to recent prices. These levels can help monitor movement, but they are not forecasts or guarantees. Fidelity Viewpoints: How alerts can help you trade and invest.
#1 Best Overall
- Specific price: Use when you want to notice that a stock reaches a particular level.
- Percentage change: Use to monitor a move relative to the previous close rather than a fixed price.
- Technical level: An EMA alert can flag a crossing of a selected moving average; decide in advance what, if anything, that crossing means to your plan.
- 52-week high or low: Use to notice when a stock reaches a recent annual extreme, not as proof that its direction will continue or reverse.
- News or events: Where offered, these can flag developments such as earnings releases rather than a particular price movement.
Fidelity says its mobile app supports push alerts and that price-triggered alerts can also be delivered by text or email, depending on settings. It also says alerts can be set on its website, which may be easier when monitoring multiple securities. Delivery options vary by platform and alert type; the reviewed platform guidance does not establish a universal real-time delivery guarantee. Confirm delivery and keep your alert list current
Saving an alert and receiving its notification are separate things to verify. Review the service’s alert preferences, your chosen delivery channel, and—if using push notifications—the phone’s app notification permission. Yahoo documents notification preferences in its app instructions; Fidelity says delivery may be push, text, or email depending on settings. Yahoo Finance Help and Fidelity Viewpoints.

Periodically review open alerts: update prices that no longer fit what you are watching, and delete alerts you no longer need. Also check how the service handles triggered alerts and whether alert settings sync across its apps and websites. For example, Schwab keeps successfully triggered mobile alerts for up to 30 days, while its mobile alerts do not synchronize with thinkorswim or Schwab.com. Schwab: How to Set Stock Alerts.

An alert can tell you that a chosen price, percentage move, technical level, or event has occurred. It cannot explain the cause, assess the investment, or account for your time horizon, financial needs, or risk tolerance. Fidelity writes, “Setting alerts can help you monitor news and markets.” Fidelity Viewpoints, “How alerts can help you trade and invest” (July 27, 2026).
When an alert arrives, pause to check what happened and whether your original reason for monitoring the stock still applies. Avoid treating a notification—or a social-media post—as a reason to make an impulsive trade. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy warns: “Retail investors should understand that all investments have risk, and that short-term investing in a volatile market carries significant risk of loss.” SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy, “Market Volatility” (January 29, 2021).

Notifications cannot prevent losses or remove market volatility. Joint guidance dated October 5, 2026, from the SEC, CFTC, FINRA, NASAA, NFA, and SIPC recommends preparing in advance with a financial plan, adequate savings, diversification and asset allocation, and patient periodic investing. It cautions that trying to time the market may lead to buying at highs and selling while prices are falling. Investor.gov: “Market Volatility” investor bulletin (October 5, 2026).

The right approach depends on your own time horizon and risk tolerance; general guidance cannot determine an appropriate allocation for an individual. Diversification can reduce overall portfolio risk, but it cannot guarantee that investments will avoid losses when the market declines. Investor.gov: Diversify Your Investments.
