What must be in place before an alert can arrive
A notification is not created merely because you viewed a store page. The title must be on the account’s wishlist, and the account or device must allow the relevant delivery channel. Check these basics first:

- Use the same Steam, PlayStation Network or Xbox account on which you intend to receive the alert.
- Confirm that the title still appears in the platform’s wishlist after adding it.
- Allow the channel you want: email, mobile push, console toast or a combination.
- Review account-level email permissions and device-level notification permissions. A platform can have the wishlist feature enabled while an operating-system or account setting suppresses the message.
- For Steam email, verify the account email address. Valve’s documentation makes verification a condition for receiving email messages.
Wishlisting is the common prerequisite in the documented Steam, PlayStation and Xbox workflows. The exact event that follows differs by platform, so do not assume that one service’s launch behavior applies to another.

A game can remain correctly wishlisted while a sale fails to meet Steam’s threshold, a console pop-up is suppressed during play, or an email is filtered. Steam: add an unreleased game and enable alerts
1. Add the title to your Steam wishlist
- Open the unreleased game’s Steam store page in the Steam client or on the Steam website.
- Select Add to your Wishlist.
- Open your wishlist and confirm that the game is listed. If it is missing, add it again while signed in to the intended account.
Steam Support documents the store-page wishlist control as the way to place a game on the wishlist. For an unreleased title, the wishlist is the tracking mechanism Steam uses when the developer makes the game available.
Check the exact store entry, not just a similarly named result. Steam can have separate app entries for a full game, a demo, a soundtrack or another edition. The entry you want to follow should be the one that represents the unreleased product you intend to buy or play.
2. Keep Steam email and mobile notifications enabled
- Open your Steam account notification preferences.
- Leave the relevant wishlist email option enabled if you want messages delivered to your verified email address.
- If you use the Steam mobile app, allow its push notifications in both the app and your phone’s operating-system settings.
- Check the account’s broader email preferences. Steam allows customers to opt out of some or all messages, which can override an otherwise successful wishlist addition.
Steam’s consumer notification controls cover wishlist sale alerts delivered by email or through the mobile app. The release notification is also delivered through email and/or mobile push when the documented release event occurs.
Enable both channels if you do not want to depend on one delivery route. Email is useful when you are away from your phone, while mobile push is easier to notice immediately. Neither channel helps if account preferences have opted out or the phone has blocked the app’s notifications.
What Steam can notify you about
Early Access and full release
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says that users who have a game on their wishlist when it releases receive an email and/or mobile push notification. The wording covers both an Early Access release and a Full Release. Therefore, wishlisting an unreleased game can produce an alert when its first playable Early Access build goes live; you do not have to wait for the eventual 1.0 launch to be notified.
This matters for games that announce a date for an unfinished build first. The relevant trigger is the game becoming available in Early Access, not only the later change to version 1.0. If the developer skips Early Access and launches directly as a full release, the full-release event is the applicable trigger.
Moving from Early Access to full release
Steam documents another possible notification when a game later moves from Early Access to full release. This is a separate event from the initial Early Access launch, so a player may receive a second message if the title remains wishlisted and the account is eligible for notifications at that time.

Keep the item wishlisted and the relevant channels enabled if you want to remain eligible for the later event.
Qualifying discounts
Steam’s documented sale trigger is specific. A wishlist sale alert requires a discount of at least 20%; the discount must last more than eight hours; and the offer must affect the lowest-priced package. A short promotion, a discount on an add-on while the base game remains full price, or a sale that does not meet those conditions may not generate the wishlist message.
The three requirements work together. A 20% reduction that ends after eight hours does not satisfy the duration rule, and a long-running discount on a higher-priced package does not satisfy the lowest-priced-package rule. Use the actual package and promotion details on the store page when deciding whether a missing sale alert is unexpected.

Associated demos
Steamworks also documents a one-time notification trigger for an associated demo. The practical setup remains the same for readers: add the full game to the wishlist and keep notification preferences enabled. Steam’s documentation does not turn every demo update into a recurring alert.

A demo alert should therefore be treated as a limited event associated with the game, not as a general subscription to every playtest, patch or announcement. Wishlisting the full game remains the reader-facing action; there is no separate recurring demo-alert setup described here.
Steam notification timing, eligibility and cooldowns
A missing Steam message does not by itself prove that the wishlist failed. Several documented rules affect delivery:
- Verified email: an unverified address cannot receive Steam’s email messages.
- Account preferences: opting out of email or mobile notifications suppresses the corresponding channel.
- Two-week app cooldown: Steam applies a two-week notification cooldown per app ID for customers who were already notified about that app. A second event inside that window may not produce another message.
- High-volume periods: Valve notes that delivery can take longer when notification volume is unusually high.
- Sale qualification: a discount must satisfy the percentage, duration and lowest-priced-package conditions described above.
The cooldown is per app ID, so it follows the specific game rather than your entire wishlist. It also applies to customers who received a notification about that app; it is not evidence that every wishlister is permanently blocked from future alerts.
For example, an Early Access launch and a full-release transition can be separate game events, but a notification already sent for the same app can place that app inside the two-week window. If the later event occurs during that period, delivery may be withheld. The rule is not a blanket two-week pause on your whole Steam account or every title you follow.
Valve also warns that high-volume periods can extend delivery time. Major sale periods or a heavily anticipated launch can therefore produce a delay even when the title is still listed and your settings are correct. Wait for delivery before concluding that the event was missed, then work through the checks below.
Steam troubleshooting checklist
Work through this order when an unreleased game launches or goes on sale but no alert appears:
- Open the Steam wishlist and verify that the exact game entry is still present. Developers sometimes create separate app entries for a demo, soundtrack or edition.
- Open Steam account notification preferences and confirm that the desired email and/or mobile options remain enabled.
- Verify the email address on the Steam account if you expected an email.
- Check your email provider’s spam, promotions and automated-mail folders, and search for Steam messages.
- For a sale, compare the offer with Steam’s documented trigger: at least 20% off, more than eight hours long and applied to the lowest-priced package.
- Consider whether Steam already notified you about the same app ID within the previous two weeks.
- If many users are waiting for a major event, allow extra time for delivery because Valve warns that high-volume periods can delay messages.
These checks distinguish a preference problem from an event that simply did not meet Steam’s notification rules.
If you changed an email address recently, verify the address shown on the Steam account rather than assuming the new inbox is eligible. If you use only mobile push, check both the Steam app’s own notification setting and the operating system’s permission for that app. Looking at only one of those controls can leave the channel blocked.
PlayStation 5: turn on Wishlist Updates
Enable the control
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Enable Wishlist Updates.
- On the same page, review the pop-up controls for gameplay, video playback and broadcasting.
PlayStation defines Wishlist Updates as the ability to see updates to items on your wishlist. The pop-up controls determine whether those notices are suppressed while you are playing a game, watching video or broadcasting.

After enabling the switch, keep the title on the same PlayStation Network account’s wishlist. The setting controls visibility of wishlist updates; it does not replace the act of saving a particular game. If multiple people use a console, check which account actually owns the wishlist entry.
What the PS5 documentation does—and does not—promise
The official PlayStation description establishes the setting and its purpose, but it does not promise that every unreleased title will generate a separate launch alert. Keep the game on your wishlist and leave Wishlist Updates enabled, but do not treat the setting as a guarantee of a dedicated Early Access or release message for every item.
If you expected a pop-up and saw nothing, first check whether pop-ups were disabled for the activity you were doing. A notice suppressed during gameplay can behave differently from one allowed while you are on the home screen.
PlayStation’s documented wording is deliberately broader than Steam’s release-specific wording: it says to see updates to wishlist items. That can be useful for store changes, but it should not be rewritten as a guaranteed launch, Early Access or discount alert unless current PlayStation documentation explicitly says so.
Xbox: release and sale notifications
What Microsoft documents
Microsoft’s wishlist documentation says the feature lets customers track products and be notified when they release or when they are included in a sale. That covers the two events most readers want for an unreleased game: availability and a later discount.
When several wishlisted items are discounted together, Microsoft says the notices may be consolidated into one system toast and one email rather than delivered as a separate message for every game. A single alert can therefore represent multiple qualifying sale changes.
Consolidation explains why a reader may see one Xbox notice while several wishlist games are discounted. It is not necessarily evidence that only one title qualified; the platform may group the sale changes into one toast and one email.

Adding the game and checking delivery
- Open the game’s page in the Xbox Store while signed in to the account you use on your console or Xbox services.
- Use the page’s wishlist control and then confirm that the title appears in your wishlist.
- Keep console system notifications and the account’s email channel available if you want both forms of notice.
Microsoft’s available documentation is publisher-facing rather than a current consumer menu guide. It confirms the release and sale alert behavior but does not establish one precise controller-menu sequence that applies to every Xbox device, region or account interface. Menu labels can therefore differ from the steps used on another Xbox generation or app.
For that reason, verify the wishlist entry first and avoid relying on an old button-by-button guide copied from another Xbox interface. The documented behavior is the important part: wishlisted products can produce release and sale notices, and several sale notices can be grouped.
Nintendo: verify current behavior before relying on a launch alert
Current documentation available for this topic does not establish a Nintendo user-facing wishlist-notification toggle or a guaranteed unreleased-game launch alert. Do not assume that a Nintendo eShop wishlist behaves like Steam, PS5 or Xbox.

If Nintendo alerts are important for a particular title, check the current Nintendo Account and eShop notification-help pages for your region and device, then confirm whether the game is actually saved to the account’s wishlist. Until Nintendo documents a specific control and trigger, treat launch notifications as unconfirmed and use the store page or the developer’s official announcement channel as a separate check.

The comparison also shows why “wishlist notification” is not one universal feature. How to avoid false expectations
A wishlist is not a reservation
Adding a game records your interest; it does not reserve a copy, guarantee access to a beta or ensure that every developer update will produce a notification. Steam’s documented triggers are specific events, while PlayStation’s wording is intentionally broader—updates to wishlist items.
Release and sale alerts are different events
A game can generate a release message without ever qualifying for a sale message. On Steam, the sale rules include the 20% threshold, a duration longer than eight hours and the lowest-priced package requirement. Email can be delayed or filtered, mobile push can be blocked by the phone, and console pop-ups can be hidden while you are playing, watching video or broadcasting. Check the delivery channel itself rather than assuming that the wishlist record was removed.
Do not confuse a demo with the full game
Steam documents a one-time notification for an associated demo, but the reader-facing setup is still to wishlist the full game and manage notification preferences. A demo page, soundtrack page or special edition can be a different app entry, so verify which entry is saved when diagnosing a missing alert.
