On Uniswap’s web app, open the swap settings and choose Auto or Custom; then expand the trade details and check Minimum received before signing. A setting that is too low can make the transaction revert while still costing gas, while a setting that is too high can fill at a substantially worse price and increase exposure to sandwich attacks.
What a slippage limit actually controls
A swap quote is calculated before your transaction is mined. Between the quote and execution, other trades can change the pool price, your transaction can wait in a queue, or the route can encounter different liquidity. Your slippage tolerance is the amount of adverse movement you permit during that interval.

Technically, the limit becomes a minimum acceptable output (or, for a token you are selling, a maximum acceptable input). If execution would deliver less than that bound, the smart contract rejects the swap. The transaction can still consume network gas because the transaction was submitted and processed even though the swap itself reverted.
Use minimum received as the practical check
The percentage is easier to understand when converted into tokens. If a quote says you will receive 1,000 units and you set 1% slippage, the minimum is approximately 990 units. If the route can return only 989 units when it executes, the swap should fail rather than settle below your limit. Rounding, token decimals, fees and the particular interface can make the displayed figure differ slightly from a simple calculation, so treat the interface’s minimum-output value as authoritative.

How the bound is enforced
The quote is an estimate, but the minimum-output parameter is passed into the swap transaction. The router compares the amount produced by the route with that parameter while the transaction executes. If the result is below the bound, the contract reverts instead of completing the transfer. This protects you from an execution below the amount you approved, but it does not make the failed attempt free: Ethereum still charges for the computation that miners or validators processed.
For a sale quoted in the opposite direction, the same idea appears as a maximum amount you are willing to spend. Read the direction carefully: “minimum received” protects the tokens you get, while “maximum sold” or an equivalent field protects how many tokens leave your wallet. Do not infer the figure from the percentage alone; inspect the actual token amount and its decimals.
Why there is no universal “correct” percentage
A suitable tolerance depends on the pair, trade size, liquidity, volatility, route, gas conditions and how much execution risk you can accept. A highly liquid, stable pair may move very little while your transaction is pending. A thinly traded or volatile token can move enough to make the same setting fail. The percentages shown by individual products are interface behavior, not market safety standards.

These are related but different risks:
| Term | What causes it | What changing the tolerance does |
|---|---|---|
| Price impact | Your own trade moves the pool price because its size is large relative to available liquidity. | Nothing. A wider tolerance does not make an illiquid pool or an expensive quote better. |
| Slippage | The execution price differs from the quote while the transaction is waiting or being routed. | Sets how far execution may move before the transaction is rejected. |
If the quote already shows substantial price impact, reduce the order size, split it into smaller trades, or investigate a route with deeper liquidity. Do not try to “solve” that warning by raising slippage: doing so only authorizes a worse final price.
Set slippage on the Uniswap web app
Labels and defaults can change, so confirm the active interface immediately before signing. The documented web-app flow is:
- Connect your wallet and choose Swap.
- Select the token you are selling and the token you want to receive, then enter the amount.
- Open the swap settings control (the gear or settings link beside the quote).
- In the slippage control, select Auto or Custom. With Custom, enter the percentage you are prepared to tolerate.
- Expand Swap details and read the quoted rate, network fee, current slippage and Minimum received.
- Compare that minimum with the least amount you would accept. If it is not acceptable, lower the trade size, wait for a better quote, or use another route instead of simply widening the limit.
- Only after the minimum-output figure and the total cost make sense should you submit the transaction in your wallet.
Uniswap documents an automatic web-app range of 0.5% to 5%, selected according to factors such as network cost and swap size. That range describes the app’s automatic behavior; it is not a recommendation that every trade should use 5% or any other fixed value.
Auto or Custom: which should you use?
Auto is a starting point produced by the interface from conditions such as swap size and network cost. It can be convenient when you do not want to choose a percentage manually, but you still need to read the resulting minimum received. Custom gives you direct control over the worst output, which is useful when the maximum loss is more important than avoiding a revert.

Neither choice overrides the economics of the quote. If Auto produces a minimum you would not accept, do not sign simply because the setting was selected automatically. If Custom produces repeated failures, diagnose the route, liquidity, delay and token behavior before increasing it. The important decision is the token amount at risk, not whether the control says Auto or Custom.
What to do when a Uniswap swap reverts
First check whether the quote changed, the minimum received is realistic and the pair has enough liquidity. Recheck token-specific transfer taxes or other contract behavior, and make sure the transaction is not sitting unusually long in a congested network. If the same trade repeatedly fails, reduce the amount or choose a deeper-liquidity route. Re-submit with a wider tolerance only when you have deliberately decided that the lower minimum output is acceptable; do not keep increasing it until the swap succeeds.
Set the limit in Uniswap Wallet
The Uniswap Wallet uses a separate control from the web app:
- Prepare the swap and proceed to the review screen.
- Open Settings during swap review.
- Choose Max slippage and enter your chosen value.
- Review the resulting minimum amount and fees, then approve and submit only if that minimum meets your requirement.
Uniswap’s Wallet help documentation describes automatic slippage from 0.5% to 5.5% and a 20% maximum for custom slippage. These are product limits that can change with an app update, not a general rule for Ethereum trades.
UniswapX: a separate execution model
Ordinary Uniswap slippage settings do not apply to UniswapX swaps. Instead, inspect the minimum amount the interface guarantees you will receive for that order. UniswapX can present different routes, and the default router evaluates simulated gas and slippage, pool liquidity and route structure. Treat the displayed guaranteed minimum—not a familiar web-app percentage—as the value to approve.
Routes, gas and aggregation
A route may use one pool or several pools, and an aggregator may divide the order among venues. The best-looking exchange rate is not necessarily the best net result after gas. Review the route information and network fee together with the minimum output. A path that saves tokens but costs substantially more gas may not improve the trade overall. Conversely, a deeper route can reduce price impact even if its path looks more complicated.
When a quote changes between screens, it can reflect a new simulation rather than a malfunction. Refresh the quote and compare the new minimum, price impact and fee. Never approve a stale transaction merely because its earlier percentage looked familiar.

Private transaction protection in Uniswap Wallet
Uniswap describes its Wallet swap protection as sending Ethereum Mainnet swaps through a private transaction pool to reduce sandwich attacks and front-running. The feature is automatically enabled for Ethereum transactions according to Uniswap’s documentation, while manual slippage adjustment remains available. This is a feature of that wallet’s flow; it is not a guarantee that every Ethereum DEX transaction is protected.

How other Ethereum swap interfaces handle slippage
| Interface | Where you adjust it | Documented behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uniswap web app | Swap settings, then Auto or Custom. | Automatic range documented as 0.5%–5%. | Check Swap details and Minimum received; ordinary setting does not govern UniswapX. |
| Uniswap Wallet | Swap review → Settings → Max slippage. | Automatic range documented as 0.5%–5.5%; custom maximum documented as 20%. | App labels and limits are subject to change. |
| 1inch | Swap settings, using an automatic choice, preset or custom tolerance. | Automatic slippage is based on the pair’s volatility profile; its help material documents a 49% custom maximum. | 1inch warns that high tolerance can make front-running or sandwich attacks easier. |
| MetaMask Swaps | Open the settings control while preparing the swap. | MetaMask describes a typical allowed range of 2%–3%. | That is provider-documented behavior, not a universal safe setting. |
For any provider, confirm four things before signing: the control’s current location, whether Auto is available, the displayed minimum output, and which router or aggregation system will execute the trade. A setting copied from one interface may have a different meaning or limit in another.
How to compare interfaces safely
Compare the worst-case token amount, not just the percentage shown beside the control. One provider may expose a percentage while another emphasizes a guaranteed minimum, and a route aggregator may calculate that minimum after considering several pools. Also compare whether the interface shows gas before approval and whether it offers a private-transaction or anti-sandwich feature. Product limits such as 20% or 49% indicate what the software permits; they do not indicate what you should authorize.
A decision framework for choosing a tolerance
Start with the loss you can accept
Convert the proposed percentage into the asset amount shown as minimum received. If that amount would make the trade unacceptable, the tolerance is too high regardless of whether the app suggests it.
Check liquidity and price impact
Large orders in shallow pools have greater price impact. Reduce the order, split execution where appropriate, or compare routes with more liquidity. A lower price-impact quote is preferable to granting a wider slippage allowance.
Consider volatility and time to inclusion
A rapidly moving pair or a transaction likely to wait longer can need more room than a stable, deep-liquidity pair. That does not justify an arbitrary wide limit: it means you should decide whether the trade is still attractive if the minimum output is reached.
Account for gas on failure
With a very tight limit, a quote that moves slightly can revert. You may lose the transaction fee without receiving tokens. Include that possible cost when deciding whether retrying is worthwhile.

Prefer a deliberate retry over blind escalation
After a failure, obtain a fresh quote, inspect the new price impact and minimum output, and investigate liquidity, route and token behavior. Change one factor at a time—such as order size or route—so you know what improved the result. A sequence of increasingly wide limits can turn a temporary execution problem into an unexpectedly expensive fill.
Why you received fewer tokens than the quote
- The market moved: another trade changed the pool before yours executed.
- Your route used different liquidity: an aggregator or router may have selected a path whose final output differs from the initial simulation.
- Price impact was already present: your order consumed liquidity and moved the pool price; slippage tolerance cannot reverse that effect.
- The token has transfer mechanics: fee-on-transfer, rebasing or other token-specific behavior can alter the amount that arrives.
- Displayed figures were estimates: the quote is conditional until the transaction is mined; the minimum-output field is the enforceable bound for that interface.
If the final amount is above the stated minimum, the transaction stayed within the tolerance you authorized. If it is below the minimum, the swap should revert rather than settle at that output; investigate the transaction and interface details before trying again.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Reducing sandwich and front-running exposure
A sandwich attack places a trade before yours and another after it, using your transaction’s predictable execution range to extract value. A high tolerance gives an attacker more room to make your fill worse while still satisfying the contract. Use the narrowest minimum output that remains practical, avoid approving a limit whose worst-case output you would regret, and use a provider’s private-transaction or protection feature when you understand what it covers.
Protection features are route- and network-specific. Uniswap’s documented Wallet protection concerns Ethereum Mainnet transactions; it should not be generalized to other wallets, chains or DEX routes.
When a swap is pending
A pending transaction has not yet reached the execution point, so its quoted output is not guaranteed. Waiting longer increases the interval in which the pool price can move. If the transaction remains pending, check its status in the wallet and network explorer rather than immediately submitting another swap that could create a duplicate order. If it eventually reverts, account for the gas already spent and obtain a fresh quote before retrying.
Do not assume that replacing a pending transaction automatically changes the slippage bound. The replacement must be reviewed in the interface and wallet, with its own minimum output and fee. Approve only the transaction whose details you have checked.

Beginner swap checklist
- Connect the wallet to the DEX and select the exact token pair.
- Enter the amount and wait for a current quote.
- Review exchange rate, network fee, route and any price-impact warning.
- Open slippage settings and choose Auto, a preset or a considered custom value.
- Expand details and record the minimum received (or UniswapX’s guaranteed minimum).
- Ask whether you would still accept that minimum after fees and price impact.
- Confirm the transaction in the wallet only if the answer is yes.
- If it fails, reassess the quote, liquidity, route and token behavior rather than repeatedly raising tolerance.
Common mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it is risky | Better response |
|---|---|---|
| Using a familiar percentage on every pair | Volatility, liquidity and route conditions differ. | Judge the minimum output for this specific trade. |
| Confusing price impact with slippage | A wider limit can authorize a worse price without improving the quote. | Reduce size or seek deeper liquidity when price impact is high. |
| Raising tolerance after every revert | Retries can eventually execute at an unacceptable price. | Refresh the quote and diagnose liquidity, delay or token mechanics. |
| Ignoring failed-transaction gas | A revert does not necessarily refund the network fee. | Include gas risk in the decision to retry. |
| Assuming UniswapX uses the normal setting | Its execution model supplies a separate guaranteed minimum. | Review that minimum directly on the UniswapX order screen. |
| Treating provider defaults as recommendations | Ranges such as 0.5%–5%, 2%–3% or 49% describe products, not safe universal values. | Set a bound based on your acceptable outcome. |
Ethereum DEX swap flow for first-time users
The general process is the same across decentralized exchanges: connect a wallet, select the pair, enter the amount, review the exchange rate and fees, then confirm the transaction. The slippage-specific step is the additional check of the minimum output before signing. That field turns an abstract percentage into the exact worst-case token amount the transaction is allowed to deliver.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change slippage on Uniswap?
On the Uniswap web app, open the swap settings beside the quote and choose Auto or Custom. On Uniswap Wallet, open Settings during swap review, select Max slippage, and enter a value. In either case, expand the details and verify Minimum received before signing.
What slippage should I set?
There is no universal safe percentage. Set the narrowest tolerance whose displayed minimum output you would genuinely accept, considering liquidity, volatility, trade size, route and likely confirmation time. Treat product defaults as suggestions, not guarantees.
Why did my swap fail even though the quote looked good?
The pool price may have moved past your minimum output while the transaction was pending, the route may have lacked liquidity, or the token may have transfer-specific behavior. A low tolerance can cause a revert, and the failed transaction can still consume gas. Refresh the quote and investigate before retrying.
Why did I receive fewer tokens than the quote?
Quotes are estimates until execution. Market movement, route changes, price impact and token transfer mechanics can reduce the final amount. If the amount is at or above the displayed minimum, it remained within your authorized tolerance; below that bound, the swap should revert.
Does raising slippage fix high price impact?
No. Price impact is caused by your trade against available pool liquidity. A higher tolerance only permits a worse execution; it does not deepen the pool or improve the quote. Reduce the order, split it where appropriate, or compare a deeper-liquidity route.
Does UniswapX use my normal Uniswap slippage setting?
No. Uniswap says ordinary slippage settings do not apply to UniswapX. Review the guaranteed minimum amount shown for the UniswapX order and approve only if that amount is acceptable.
Can a failed swap still cost gas?
Yes. The transaction can consume gas even when the swap contract reverts. Include that cost when deciding whether to retry, and avoid repeatedly widening tolerance without checking the quote, route and minimum output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAre 1inch and MetaMask percentages comparable with Uniswap’s?
Not necessarily. 1inch documents automatic behavior based on pair volatility and a 49% custom maximum, while MetaMask describes a typical 2%–3% range. These are provider-specific controls and should not be treated as universal safety recommendations.
The Bottom Line
Use the minimum output—not a familiar percentage—as your decision rule. Set Auto or Custom in the interface you are using, inspect the resulting minimum received and total fee, and sign only when the worst-case amount still works for you.
If a swap fails, refresh the quote and check liquidity, price impact, route, delay and token mechanics. A wider tolerance may reduce reverts, but it also accepts a worse fill and can increase sandwich exposure. Change the trade or route deliberately rather than raising slippage until something executes.
