To change the page layout Playwright MCP captures, set its browser viewport with --viewport-size=WIDTHxHEIGHT or PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_VIEWPORT_SIZE=WIDTHxHEIGHT, for example 1280x720. That controls the browser’s CSS layout viewport. Separately, choose screenshot scale to control pixel density, and fullPage to capture content below the fold. These are three different settings, not interchangeable ways to resize one image.
Choose which kind of screenshot size you mean
“Screenshot size” can refer to the dimensions the page is rendered at, the number of pixels in the image, or how far down the page the capture extends. Decide which result you want before changing a setting:
| What you want to change | Use | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| How wide and tall the browser page is while it renders | --viewport-size=1280x720 or PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_VIEWPORT_SIZE=1280x720 |
The viewport dimensions, in pixels, and therefore potentially the page’s responsive layout. |
| Whether image pixels correspond to CSS pixels or device pixels | scale: "css" or scale: "device" |
The output image’s pixel density; it does not set the viewport. |
| Whether to capture only the visible area or the full scrollable page | fullPage: true |
The vertical capture extent; it does not set viewport dimensions. |
For repeatable layout comparisons, set the viewport and scale explicitly. Add full-page capture only when the artifact needs content outside the visible viewport.
Set the Playwright MCP viewport
Configure the viewport when starting the Playwright MCP server. The documented option accepts a width and height separated by x, such as 1280x720. The official configuration guide documents three sources—config file, environment variables, and command-line arguments—in increasing order of precedence. If the same option appears in more than one place, the command-line value wins over the environment variable, and the environment variable wins over the config-file value.

Set it in the MCP server command
For an MCP client that accepts a server configuration in this form, include the viewport option in the server’s args array:
{
"mcpServers": {
"playwright": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest", "--viewport-size=1280x720"]
}
}
}
This starts the server with a 1280-by-720 viewport. Use the configuration file format your MCP client expects if its surrounding server configuration differs; the relevant Playwright MCP argument is --viewport-size=1280x720.
Set it with an environment variable
Alternatively, set the documented environment variable in the environment that launches the MCP server:
PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_VIEWPORT_SIZE=1280x720
For example, place that assignment in the server process’s environment using the mechanism supported by your operating system, shell, or MCP client. Do not assume a variable set in one terminal automatically reaches a separately launched desktop client.

Choose between configuration sources
Use one source where practical to avoid confusion. If you need an environment-wide default but a particular MCP server configuration should differ, the command-line option can override it. When changing startup configuration, restart or reconnect the MCP server so the new startup option is applied; this is practical guidance for a server-startup setting.
Set screenshot scale independently
The browser_take_screenshot tool has a scale parameter. Set it to "css" for an image sized in CSS pixels, or "device" for device-pixel output. Device scale can create a larger image on a high-DPI display. This changes output density, not the browser viewport that determines how the page lays out.
For instance, if a page is rendered with a 1280-pixel-wide CSS viewport, choosing device scale does not make the page behave as though its CSS viewport were wider. It changes how many output pixels represent the rendered content. Use "css" when you want image dimensions to correspond to CSS-pixel dimensions; choose "device" when device-pixel detail is the goal. The resulting image dimensions may differ with the scale and capture extent, so do not infer the page’s viewport from the output file’s pixel dimensions alone.
Capture the full page when needed
By default, a screenshot can represent the visible viewport. Set fullPage: true on browser_take_screenshot to capture the page’s full scrollable height instead. This is a capture-extent choice: it does not set the browser viewport width or height. The official tool description does not promise a fixed final pixel height for every full-page capture, because the resulting extent depends on the page and browser behavior.

The screenshot tool can capture the current page, a target element, or the full scrollable page. Its fullPage option cannot be combined with an element target in the MCP screenshot tool. If you need a single element, target that element; if you need all content down the page, use full-page capture without an element target.
Choose image format and output file
browser_take_screenshot supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. You can provide a filename; if you omit the explicit type, the type is inferred from the filename extension or defaults to PNG. If you omit the filename, the tool saves a timestamped file in its output directory and returns the image inline unless image responses are omitted by server configuration.
When a screenshot is part of a comparison or test artifact, specify the format and filename deliberately so the output is easy to identify. A filename extension and explicit type should agree to avoid ambiguity. The viewport and scale still determine different aspects of size regardless of which supported format you select.
Practical setup for a reproducible capture
- Set the viewport at server startup. Add
--viewport-size=1280x720to the Playwright MCP server arguments, or setPLAYWRIGHT_MCP_VIEWPORT_SIZE=1280x720in the server process environment. - Restart or reconnect the server. This ensures the changed startup configuration is used for the new server session.
- Open the page you want to capture. Use the normal Playwright MCP browsing flow to navigate to the target page.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotwith the relevant capture options. Usescale: "css"orscale: "device"for density, and optionallyfullPage: truefor the full scrollable page. - Give the output a clear name and format. For example, request a PNG or WebP filename and use a matching type if specifying one explicitly.
The viewport argument is a server startup option, whereas scale and full-page capture are screenshot-call options. Keep that boundary clear when diagnosing a result: a screenshot-call parameter cannot substitute for a viewport setting.

If you need a screenshot through an API rather than configuring a local Playwright MCP browser, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request capture. Its API also provides format and capture options; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the supported parameters. This is a separate service, not a way to set the viewport of your Playwright MCP server.

The page still appears to use the old viewport
Check that the option is attached to the Playwright MCP server’s startup command, or that PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_VIEWPORT_SIZE is present in the environment of the process that launches the server. Restart or reconnect after changing startup settings. Also check for a higher-precedence command-line value overriding the environment or config-file setting.
The image is larger, but the page layout did not change
You likely changed scale rather than the viewport. Set --viewport-size or PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_VIEWPORT_SIZE to affect the browser layout; use scale only to choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel output.

Use fullPage: true if you need the full scrollable page. Changing the viewport height is not equivalent: a taller viewport changes the visible browser area, while full-page capture extends the capture to the page’s scrollable height.

The element screenshot request conflicts with full-page capture
Do not combine fullPage: true with an element target in the MCP screenshot tool. Make an element-targeted capture for the element, or make a separate full-page capture without a target.
The image file is not the format or name expected
Set a filename with the intended extension, and set type explicitly when you need to remove ambiguity. Without an explicit type, the tool infers it from the filename extension or defaults to PNG. Without a filename, expect a timestamped output file rather than a chosen name.
The screenshot does not appear inline
Check whether image responses are omitted by the server configuration. With no filename, the tool returns the image inline unless image responses have been omitted; a saved output file may still be available in the output directory.

The option names and behavior described here reflect the official Microsoft Playwright MCP repository and Playwright documentation reviewed on September 29, 2026. Playwright MCP is software that can change, and this article does not establish the behavior of every installed version. If an option is rejected or behaves differently, check the documentation corresponding to the package version in use rather than assuming a different screenshot parameter controls the same setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set the Playwright MCP viewport separately for different pages in one session?
The documented viewport control here is a Playwright MCP server startup option or environment variable. The reviewed documentation does not establish a per-page MCP setting for changing it during a session.
Does full-page capture include an unlimited amount of page content?
No fixed maximum or universal final pixel height is established by the tool description. Full-page capture targets the page’s scrollable height, and actual output can depend on page and browser behavior.
