How to set screen time limits on Android TV

On a supported device with the Google TV interface, set a child’s viewing allowance here: All settings > Accounts & Profiles > child’s profile > Screen time > Daily limit. Choose the days and a daily allowance in 15-minute increments, up to eight hours. You can also schedule a bedtime in the same profile. This is not a universal Android TV OS setting: some Android TV devices do not use the Google TV interface, and kids profiles may be unavailable on particular models or in some regions.

First, check whether your device has Google TV

“Android TV” describes the operating system, while Google TV is an interface that runs on some Android TV OS devices. Google’s documented daily viewing limit and bedtime controls are part of a child’s Google TV profile. A television or streaming device running Android TV OS without the Google TV interface may not show these menus.

From the home screen, look for the Google TV-style profile picture and an Accounts & Profiles area in All settings. Menu names can vary with device language and software version. If you cannot find those items, check the exact television or streaming-device model and the manufacturer’s support material before assuming the limit is broken. Google also warns that kids profiles are not available on every device or in every region.

Create a child profile before setting a limit

The daily limit belongs to a child’s Google TV profile. If no such profile exists, create one from the profile picture on the Google TV home screen, or during initial setup.

  1. Open the profile picture on the Google TV home screen. On some setups, you can begin from the initial home screen instead.
  2. Select Add account, then Add a kid.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to create or select the child’s profile.
  4. Choose which apps should be available in that profile.

Google may not offer the Add a kid option on every device or in every country. If the option is absent, verify that the product actually uses the Google TV interface and consult the model-specific support documentation.

Set a daily screen-time limit

Once the child’s profile is available, use the parent account credentials to set the allowance for each day.

  1. From the Google TV home screen, open All settings.
  2. Select Accounts & Profiles.
  3. Select the child’s profile.
  4. When prompted, enter the parent’s Google Account PIN or password.
  5. Select Screen time, then Daily limit.
  6. Choose the days you want to schedule and the number of hours allowed on each day.
  7. Confirm the schedule and return to the child’s profile.

Google documents daily-limit choices in 15-minute increments, with a maximum of eight hours per day. You can assign different allowances to different days, so a weekday schedule does not have to match a weekend schedule. For example, a parent could select a shorter allowance on school days and a longer one on Saturday, provided each value is available in the device’s 15-minute selector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schedule a bedtime

A bedtime prevents viewing during a defined period rather than measuring a total number of hours. It is configured inside the same child profile.

  1. Open All settings on Google TV.
  2. Go to Accounts & Profiles and select the child’s profile.
  3. Authenticate with the parent’s Google Account PIN or password.
  4. Open Screen time, then select Bedtime.
  5. Choose the days and set the start and end of the allowed viewing period.
  6. Save the schedule.

Google documents bedtime scheduling in 30-minute intervals. A bedtime window is separate from the daily-hour allowance: use the daily limit to cap total viewing and bedtime to define when viewing is permitted.

Daily limit and bedtime: what each control does

Control Where it is configured What you choose Documented granularity or range
Daily limit Google TV child profile > Screen time > Daily limit Days and permitted viewing hours for each day 15-minute increments; up to 8 hours per day
Bedtime Google TV child profile > Screen time > Bedtime Days plus the start and end of the allowed viewing period 30-minute intervals
Bonus time Timeout screen shown when the allowance is reached Additional viewing for the current situation 15-minute increments; up to 8 hours, according to Google’s help documentation

These controls apply to the selected Google TV kids profile. They are not a general timer for every account on the television.

Give temporary bonus time without changing the schedule

If a child reaches the daily allowance, a parent can add bonus viewing time from the timeout screen. Enter the parent’s Google Account PIN or password, then choose the additional amount. Google documents bonus-time choices in 15-minute increments, up to eight hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bonus time is useful for a one-off exception, such as finishing a film, because it does not require you to edit the recurring daily schedule. Use the profile’s daily-limit settings when you want a permanent change.

Prevent a child from leaving the profile

Google TV can lock a kids profile so that leaving it requires the adult’s Google Account PIN or password. This matters when other profiles on the television have unrestricted access: a child who can freely switch profiles could otherwise avoid the child-profile schedule.

Profile-lock availability and menu wording depend on the device and software version. Look for the lock option in the child profile’s settings after authenticating as the parent.

What Family Link can and cannot control on the TV

Family Link and Google TV handle different parts of parental control. Family Link can help you review activity for apps used on a signed-in Google TV device and block or unblock apps. Google says the TV’s daily limit, bedtime or downtime, bonus time, and profile lock must be configured on Google TV itself; those time controls cannot be set through Family Link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Task Google TV kids profile Family Link
Set a daily viewing limit Yes, on the TV No; Google directs you to Google TV
Set bedtime or downtime Yes, on the TV No; Google directs you to Google TV
Add one-time bonus time Yes, from the timeout screen No
Lock the child’s profile Yes, where supported No
View app activity Profile and device experience Yes, for a signed-in Google TV device
Block or unblock apps App selection is part of kids-profile setup and settings Yes

Therefore, installing or opening Family Link on a phone does not replace the Google TV steps for a daily limit or bedtime.

Control apps and content separately

Choose the apps included in the child profile

When creating a kids profile, Google TV asks which apps to include. Review that selection if the child should have access to fewer services. Family Link can also block or unblock apps on a signed-in device, giving you a separate way to manage availability.

Understand the scope of content restrictions

Google’s kids-profile content restrictions affect movie and show recommendations generated by Google and content available through Family Library. They do not apply to recommendations supplied directly by individual apps or to search results inside those apps. Streaming services may provide their own parental controls, so check each app when its recommendations or in-app search need separate limits.

This distinction explains why a title or recommendation can still appear inside an app even after you adjust the Google TV kids-profile settings: the app is supplying that result rather than Google TV.

Why “Screen time” is missing

The device uses Android TV OS but not the Google TV interface

Android TV OS alone does not guarantee the Google TV kids-profile controls. Some products use a different interface and therefore do not expose the documented menu path. Confirm the interface shown on the home screen and search the manufacturer’s support pages for the exact model.

The profile is not a supported kids profile

The screen-time menu is tied to the child’s profile. A standard adult Google account may show account settings without the child-specific controls. Return to Accounts & Profiles and verify that you selected the child’s profile, not another account.

Kids profiles are unavailable for the device or region

Google states that kids profiles may not be available on some devices or in some regions. In that case, the absence of Add a kid or Screen time is a support limitation, not a missing password or an incorrect sequence.

Labels differ by language or software version

Google notes that menu wording can vary with device language and software version. Look for equivalent entries under settings, accounts, profiles, and screen-time controls rather than relying on an exact English label.

You are looking in Family Link

Family Link is the wrong place to configure the TV’s daily limit and bedtime. Use the physical TV or streaming device and follow the Google TV profile path. Keep Family Link for activity review and app blocking or unblocking.

A practical setup sequence for families

Use this order to avoid creating a schedule for the wrong account or leaving an unrestricted route around it.

  1. Identify whether the home screen is Google TV and confirm that the model and region support kids profiles.
  2. Create the child’s profile and select only the apps that should appear there.
  3. Set the daily allowance separately for each relevant day.
  4. Set a bedtime window in 30-minute increments.
  5. Enable a profile lock if the child should not switch to adult profiles.
  6. Review the app list and apply app-specific parental controls where recommendations or search are supplied by the app.
  7. Keep the parent’s Google Account PIN or password private; it is required for schedule changes, profile access, and bonus time.

Examples of schedules you can create

The values below illustrate how the controls can be combined; they are not Google-prescribed schedules. Select values that fit your household and the increments offered by your device.

Day type Daily-limit example Bedtime example Purpose
School day One allowance selected in 15-minute increments Earlier evening cutoff selected in 30-minute intervals Limit total viewing and block late-night use
Weekend A different allowance selected in 15-minute increments Later cutoff selected in 30-minute intervals Allow a different routine without changing weekdays
Travel or holiday Temporarily add bonus time at the timeout screen Keep or adjust the existing bedtime on Google TV Make a one-time exception instead of rewriting every day

Because daily limits are assigned by day, changing Saturday does not automatically change Monday through Friday. Review each day shown in the selector before saving.

Limits and edge cases to know

  • Not a universal Android TV feature: the documented controls are for Google TV with a supported kids profile.
  • Device and regional availability: Google does not promise kids profiles on every device or in every region.
  • Different control layers: Family Link activity reports and app blocking do not substitute for the TV’s daily limit or bedtime.
  • App-owned recommendations: Google TV’s content restrictions do not govern recommendations or in-app search results supplied directly by an individual app.
  • Authentication is intentional: schedule changes and bonus time require the parent’s Google Account PIN or password.
  • Interface variation: language and software version can change the labels while keeping the same general location in the child profile.

Quick checklist

  • Is the device using the Google TV interface rather than another Android TV OS interface?
  • Does the model and region support a Google TV kids profile?
  • Did you select the child’s profile under Accounts & Profiles?
  • Did you authenticate with the parent’s Google Account PIN or password?
  • Did you set each day’s allowance in the Daily limit menu?
  • Did you configure Bedtime separately if you need a clock-based cutoff?
  • Did you lock the profile and review individual app controls?

When to consult the manufacturer

If the Google TV home screen, kids-profile creation, or Screen time menu is unavailable after you verify the account and profile, stop looking for a hidden Android TV-wide timer. Check the exact model’s manufacturer documentation and Google’s device-specific help. The available controls depend on the device’s interface, software, region, and support for kids profiles.
