How to Set Screen-Time Limits for Social Media on iPhone and Android

You can set social-media limits with the controls already built into your phone. On an iPhone, use Settings > Screen Time > Time Allowances and choose the Social Media category. On Android, use Settings > Digital Wellbeing > App timers and give each social-media app its own daily timer.

Those personal controls are different from parental supervision. For a child, use Apple Family Sharing and Screen Time on iPhone, or Google Family Link on Android. The steps, device coverage, schedules and ways to change a limit depend on which route you choose.

Choose the right setup first

The fastest route depends on whose phone use you are managing and how precise the limit needs to be.

Situation Control to use What you limit Important behavior
Your iPhone Screen Time > Time Allowances The Social Media category, a daily device total, or another category Requires the current Screen Time experience; schedules are available on iOS 27 or later
Your Android phone Digital Wellbeing > App timers Each selected app separately The app closes and its icon dims at the limit; the timer resets at midnight
Your child’s iPhone Family Sharing > the child’s Screen Time Categories, allowances and schedules managed by a parent or guardian The child should have a separate Apple Account; family devices need compatible software for the newest controls
Your child’s Android phone or Chromebook Family Link > Screen time > Time limits Per-app limits plus a daily device limit and schedules Daily limits apply separately to every Android device or Chromebook the child uses

Both platforms provide these controls without buying another app or device. They are not identical: iPhone offers a Social Media category, while Android’s personal control is an app-by-app timer. A personal timer also is not the same as a remotely managed child account.

Before setting a limit

  • Identify every access route. A limit on an installed app may not cover the same service opened in a browser. Check the platform-specific website controls as well as app limits.
  • Check the operating-system version. Apple’s newer Time Allowances and Screen Time Schedules require iOS 27 or later on the relevant Apple devices. Google warns that Android menu names and support can vary by device.
  • Decide whether you need a category or individual apps. A category is convenient for broad self-management on iPhone. Android requires a timer for each app you want to control.
  • Separate self-management from family management. If another person must be prevented from changing the limit, use the family-management feature and its parent controls rather than treating a personal timer as remote supervision.

Set a social-media limit on your own iPhone

1. Turn on Screen Time activity

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. Use the available setup option to enable App & Website Activity.

Screen Time needs activity enabled before it can report use and apply allowances. Apple’s current iPhone guide describes this setup and the newer allowance and schedule controls in its iOS 27 documentation: Apple’s iPhone Screen Time guide.

2. Set the Social Media allowance

  1. Return to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Time Allowances.
  3. Adjust the device-wide daily amount, or select the Social Media category and set its allowance.
  4. Save the duration and review which apps Apple has placed in that category.

The category route is useful when you want one limit for several social apps rather than maintaining separate timers. Apple says an allowance can also apply to an associated website when that website is declared in the relevant app or category data. That means a web route may be covered in some cases, but you should verify the result for the service you use instead of assuming every browser session is included.

3. Add a schedule when time of day matters

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time > Screen Time Schedule.
  2. Turn on Schedule.
  3. Tap Add Schedule.
  4. Choose the days and the start and end times.
  5. Set the schedule to match the relevant Time Allowance where that option is offered.

A daily allowance answers “how long?” A schedule answers “when?” Combining them can, for example, reserve social-media access for a defined window while still limiting the total time. These new schedule and allowance controls require iOS 27 or later across the Apple devices involved. Older software uses the previous Screen Time experience.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide says: “With Screen Time, you can use Time Allowances to set how long you use your apps each day, and Schedules to set when during the day you can use them.”

Set limits for your own Android phone

1. Open Digital Wellbeing

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing.
  3. Choose App timers.

Android menu labels can differ by manufacturer and software release. If you do not see the exact wording, look for Digital Wellbeing’s app-timer screen in Settings.

2. Give each social app a timer

  1. Find the social-media app in the list.
  2. Tap Set timer beside it.
  3. Choose the daily duration.
  4. Tap OK.

Repeat these steps for every app you want to limit. Android’s personal control is based on individual apps, not one universal Social Media category. If you use the same service in more than one app, each installed app needs its own timer.

3. Know what happens at the limit

Google says the timer closes the app and dims its icon when the allotted time is reached. The timer resets at midnight. Google also says you can remove the timer before midnight if you need to use the app again, so this is a local self-management control rather than an unchangeable lock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an additional local barrier, Digital Wellbeing provides an App limits PIN. Google documents that a zero-minute limit can be used to block an app. The PIN protects the limit on that device; it is not remote parental supervision and does not manage another phone.

Some work or school accounts may not support app timers. If the option is missing, confirm whether the phone is using a managed account and check the device maker’s current Digital Wellbeing instructions. Google’s general behavior and available menus are described here: Google Android Help: Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing.

Manage a child’s iPhone with Family Sharing

1. Set up the family relationship correctly

Apple’s parental flow is separate from setting a limit on your own phone. Set up Family Sharing, and give the child a separate Apple Account. Apple describes a child account for a child rather than sharing the parent’s sign-in. The family organizer or a parent or guardian then manages the child’s Screen Time from the parent’s device.

2. Open the child’s Screen Time controls

  1. On the parent or guardian’s iPhone, open Settings.
  2. Tap Family.
  3. Select the child’s name.
  4. Tap Screen Time.

From that panel, set the child’s category-level Time Allowances and any Screen Time Schedule. The family manager sets the child’s Screen Time passcode from their own device, so the child does not have to be given the code used to change the controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check software compatibility

Apple’s newer schedules and Time Allowances require iOS 27 or later on the relevant family devices. If every family device cannot be updated, Apple says the previous Screen Time version remains available. Do not interpret a missing Schedule or Time Allowances menu as evidence that Screen Time is unavailable; it may indicate that one of the devices is using the older interface.

Apple’s parental setup requirements and version notes are documented in Apple Support’s guide to using Screen Time to manage a child’s iPhone or iPad.

Manage a child’s Android device with Family Link

Set an app-specific limit

  1. Open the Family Link app on the parent’s device.
  2. Select the child.
  3. Tap Screen time.
  4. Tap Time limits.
  5. Choose App limits.
  6. Select the app.
  7. Enter the allowed hours and minutes.
  8. Save the limit.

This route is designed for a child’s account, not for placing a remote lock on another adult’s phone. Use it for each app that needs its own allowance, then configure the separate daily limit and schedule in the child’s Screen time controls.

Understand multi-device coverage

Google says daily limits apply separately to each Android device or Chromebook used by the child. A child with two Android devices can therefore receive the daily allowance on each device unless you account for that in the family setup. Treat the per-device behavior as a coverage issue when planning the limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check “unlimited time” eligibility

Family Link’s Unlimited time apps feature has version and device conditions. Google documents eligibility for Android 7 and later, with an exception for devices running Google Kids Space. Check the child’s device before relying on an unlimited-time setting, and do not assume that an app exempted on one device is exempted everywhere.

Google’s app-limit instructions are in Manage your child’s Google Play apps, while the account and device setup is covered in Get started with Family Link.

iPhone versus Android: what actually differs

Decision point iPhone Android
Personal setup Settings > Screen Time; enable App & Website Activity Settings > Digital Wellbeing > App timers
Social-media granularity Social Media category, plus a device-wide daily amount Individual app timers; set each app separately
Time-of-day control Screen Time Schedule with selected days and windows on iOS 27 or later The documented personal control is a daily app timer; device menus and other features vary
At the limit Screen Time allowance or schedule restricts the configured category or activity The app closes and its icon dims; the timer resets at midnight
Parent setup Family Sharing, the child’s Apple Account and the parent’s Screen Time controls Family Link, the child’s account and per-app or daily limits
Cross-device warning Family devices need compatible software for the newest controls Daily limits are separate for each Android device or Chromebook

The most important distinction is not which platform has a timer; both do. It is whether you need a broad category or per-app control, whether access must be restricted at particular times, and whether another person must be prevented from changing the setting.

Common problems and fixes

The iPhone does not show Social Media, Time Allowances or Schedules

  • Confirm that App & Website Activity is enabled under Settings > Screen Time.
  • Check the iOS version. The newer Time Allowances and Screen Time Schedules require iOS 27 or later.
  • In a family setup, check the software on the parent’s and child’s relevant Apple devices. If they cannot all update, use the previous Screen Time experience instead of expecting the new labels.

An Android phone has no App timers option

  • Search Settings for Digital Wellbeing; manufacturers place it in different sections.
  • Check whether a work or school account manages the phone. Google notes that some such accounts do not support app timers.
  • Confirm that you are selecting an installed app. Android’s personal control is not a universal category switch.

The app is still reachable in a browser

An app timer does not automatically prove that every web route is covered. On iPhone, Apple says an allowance applies to an associated website when that association is declared. On Android, review Google’s separate Chrome site-timer instructions from the Digital Wellbeing help page if browser access is part of the problem: Google’s Digital Wellbeing guidance.

A child gets more time on another device

For Android, this is expected when the child uses multiple Android devices or Chromebooks because daily limits apply separately to each one. Check every signed-in device in Family Link. For Apple families, verify that each relevant device is updated and connected to the intended Family Sharing setup.

The limit is too easy to change

A personal Android timer is deliberately reversible: Google documents that it can be removed before midnight. Use the App limits PIN for a local control that should not be casually edited, and keep in mind that this PIN still protects only that device. For a child, use the parent-managed Family Link or Apple Family Sharing route rather than relying on a setting the child controls on their own phone.

A practical way to roll out the limit

  1. List the apps and websites first. Include every installed social app and any browser route you intend to restrict.
  2. Choose the control level. Use iPhone’s Social Media category for a broad allowance, or use individual app timers when different apps need different durations.
  3. Add a schedule only when it solves a real timing problem. A daily allowance controls total duration; a schedule controls the hours in which use is available.
  4. For children, configure the family account before the limit. Apple requires Family Sharing and the child’s own Apple Account; Google requires the child’s Family Link relationship.
  5. Check every device. Android’s daily limit is per device, while Apple’s newest family controls depend on compatible software across the setup.
  6. Test the boundary. Let the timer reach its limit once, then verify what happens in the app and in the browser. On Android, confirm that the icon dims and the app closes; on iPhone, confirm that the selected category and schedule behave as intended.

What these built-in limits can and cannot do

  • They can enforce a daily duration for a selected iPhone category, an individual Android app, or a child’s managed app account.
  • They can create time windows on iPhone’s current Screen Time system and separate schedules in Family Link.
  • They cannot be assumed to cover every website, account or second device without checking the platform’s documented behavior.
  • They are not identical to a physical phone lock. A social-media allowance targets configured apps or categories; it does not automatically make the entire phone unavailable.
  • They do not provide published evidence of a particular reduction in social-media use. The official setup pages explain configuration and behavior, not a guaranteed outcome.

For a personal phone, start with the built-in category or app timer and verify browser coverage. For a child, establish the family account first, then apply app limits, daily limits and schedules across every device the child uses.
