The reliable way to manage a child’s console is to configure the child’s account and family group first, then set play-time rules and spending controls separately. PlayStation lets an adult schedule playable hours and a daily duration, with an option to notify the child or log them out. Xbox applies schedules while the child is signed in and can also limit individual games across connected devices. Nintendo puts play-time controls in its mobile app, while purchase restrictions are managed in the parent Nintendo Account; most Nintendo console restrictions apply to everyone using that console.
Use the section for the exact console generation and account region. Menu names and feature availability can change, and a play-time timer does not automatically prevent purchases.

Quick comparison: where each platform’s controls live
| Platform | Account scope | Time controls | Purchase controls | What happens at the limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 | Separate child account in the family group; a family manager or appointed parent/guardian changes settings. | Playable hours plus a duration for each day or selected days. | Monthly spending limit on the child account, funded from the family manager’s wallet. | Notification-only or automatic logout; the child can request more time. |
| Xbox consoles | Child added to a Microsoft family group; only a parent in that group can change the child’s privacy and online settings. | Daily schedules and total hours for each day; separate game or app limits are available. | Ask a Parent approval requests; a passkey can protect purchases on the parent’s account. | Time is counted while the child is signed in. The family system can also apply game limits across connected Windows, Xbox and Android devices. |
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | Parental Controls app for console activity; parent Nintendo Account for spending settings. | Daily limit, bedtime and morning start time in the mobile app. | Purchase restrictions in the parent Nintendo Account’s browser settings. | App-managed play-time and bedtime rules; most console restrictions are system-wide rather than per user. |
Prepare the family setup before setting a timer
Identify the console and the account that plays on it
Check whether the child uses a PlayStation 4 or 5, an Xbox console, a Nintendo Switch or a Switch 2. Then identify the exact child profile used for games and the adult account that owns the family settings. A timer set on an adult profile will not enforce the same rules as one attached to the child’s profile.
Use a separate child account
PlayStation play-time controls require a separate child account in the family group. Xbox limits depend on a Microsoft family group with the child added as a family member. Nintendo divides controls between the console, its companion app and the parent Nintendo Account, so confirm that the app and account are linked to the console the child actually uses.

Confirm the adult role
On PlayStation, the person changing settings must be the family manager or an appointed parent or guardian. On Xbox, only a parent in the Microsoft family group can change a child’s privacy and online settings. Nintendo purchase restrictions must be changed from the parent’s Nintendo Account profile in a browser.
Decide the rule you want before opening menus
Separate three decisions: when play is allowed, how much total time is available, and whether purchases require approval. For example, you might allow play after homework during a defined evening window, give a different total on weekends, and keep child-account spending at zero. A schedule controls access to play; it does not replace a spending limit or purchase approval.
PlayStation: set play time and spending on PS5 or PS4
What you need
- A child account in the PlayStation family group for each child.
- A signed-in family manager or appointed parent/guardian account.
- The correct time zone for the child’s location.
PlayStation’s family controls are account-based. If the child uses both a PS5 and a PS4, the same play-time limits apply when that child account is used on either console.
Set a schedule and daily duration on PS5
- Sign in on the PS5 as the family manager or appointed parent/guardian.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child’s account.
- Set the child’s time zone.
- Choose Playtime Settings.
- Turn play-time limits on, then set the playable hours and the allowed duration for each day or for selected days.
- Save the settings and check the schedule for every day you intend to control.
The schedule defines the window in which play is permitted; the duration defines how much of that day’s allowance can be used. When the allowance is nearly exhausted, the child receives a notification. At the end, choose whether the console should only notify the child or log the child out. A parent can grant additional time or respond to a request when appropriate.
Use the controls consistently on PS4
The family-management approach also governs a child account on PS4. Menu wording can differ from the PS5 path, so select the child in the family-management area and look for the play-time controls rather than assuming a timer configured for an adult profile will carry over. Limits associated with the child account apply when that account plays on either PS4 or PS5.

- 6.2” LCD screen

- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Set the monthly spending limit
- On PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child.
- Choose Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
- Enter the monthly amount and save it.
The same setting is available online through Account Management > Family Management > child > Edit > Monthly Spending Limit. Purchases made by the child on that account draw from the family manager’s wallet. Sony’s default monthly limit is 0, so no child-account spending is allowed unless the family manager changes it. If you want no spending, verify that the limit remains at zero after changing other family settings.
Keep time and spending separate
A child can have plenty of remaining play time and still be blocked from buying anything when the monthly limit is zero. Conversely, a spending allowance does not extend the play schedule. Review both controls whenever you change the family rules.

Xbox: manage signed-in time, individual games and purchases
Create the Microsoft family group
Create or use a Microsoft family group and add the child’s Microsoft account. The Xbox Family Settings app and the Microsoft family website are the stated management channels. The adult making changes must be a parent in that family group; a child account cannot alter its own protected privacy and online settings.
Set daily Xbox time in the Family Safety app
- Open the Microsoft Family Safety app and select the child.
- Choose Windows/Xbox.
- Select the device or Xbox category you want to control.
- Choose a day, then set the permitted time range and the total number of hours.
- Repeat for each day with a different rule and save.
The app lets you set both the hours during which play is allowed and the total time available on that day. Xbox time is counted while the child is signed in. Have the child sign out when finished, especially if the console remains on, so unused sessions do not continue to count.
Use the Microsoft family website instead
- Go to account.microsoft.com/family and sign in as the parent.
- Select the child.
- Choose Xbox.
- Set or edit limits by day, including the allowed range and total hours.
- Save, then check the next day’s rule rather than assuming one setting applies to every day.
Limit a particular game or app
Family Safety can apply a time amount and allowed hours to an individual game or app. Microsoft says these limits can extend across connected Windows, Xbox and Android devices through the family group. The platform choices shown in the app can vary, so confirm which devices are included when you configure the rule. This is useful when a child should have a shorter allowance for one game than for other activities.

Require approval for purchases
Xbox’s Ask a Parent feature sends an email when the child wants to buy a game or app and needs parental help to fund the purchase. Review the request before approving it. You can also create a passkey to restrict purchases made on the parent’s own account; this protects the adult profile if the child uses the same console.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: use the app for time and the account for spending
Install and connect the Parental Controls app
Nintendo says its free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for iOS and Android offers the most extensive controls for both Switch 2 and Switch. An internet connection is required for the app to work with either console. Link the app to the console and select the child’s use profile during setup.
Set a daily limit and bedtime
- Open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and select the linked console.
- Set the daily play-time limit.
- Set the bedtime and the morning time at which play may start.
- Save the schedule and review the rule for each day that needs a different allowance.
The app can show which games were played and for how long, helping you check whether the rule matches actual use. Because the app needs an internet connection to communicate with the console, reconnect the console and phone before troubleshooting a rule that appears not to update.
Restrict purchases in the parent Nintendo Account
Nintendo’s purchase restrictions are not set on the console or in the smart-device app. Use a browser to open the parent’s Nintendo Account profile settings and change the purchase restrictions there. Check that you are editing the parent account associated with the child’s supervised or child profile, and verify the options available in your region.

Understand the shared-console limitation
Nintendo states that most parental-control options are system-wide, so the same restrictions affect everyone using that console. This differs from PlayStation and Xbox controls that are primarily tied to a child account or family member. If several people share one Switch or Switch 2, consider whether the bedtime and play-time rule is acceptable for every user before enabling it.
Optional Switch 2 communication controls
For children under 16 and supervised users, GameChat requires controls to be set up through the Parental Controls app before use. The app can manage allowed chat friends, video-chat requests and GameChat history. These communication settings are separate from play-time and purchase settings, so configure them only if the child uses GameChat.
Choose the right control for a common family rule
| If your goal is… | Use this control | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Allow play only after a certain time or before bedtime | PlayStation playable hours, Xbox daily time ranges, or Nintendo app bedtime and start times. | A time window does not set a spending limit. |
| Give a fixed number of minutes or hours each day | PlayStation duration, Xbox daily hours, or Nintendo app daily limit. | On Xbox, time is counted while the child is signed in; on Nintendo, the rule generally affects the whole console. |
| Give one game less time than others | Xbox individual game or app limit. | Check which connected Windows, Xbox and Android devices the Family Safety rule covers. |
| Stop child-account purchases | PlayStation monthly limit set to 0, Xbox Ask a Parent, or Nintendo Account purchase restrictions. | These settings concern the relevant child or parent account, not every possible storefront or adult profile. |
| Protect purchases made from an adult profile | Xbox parent-account passkey. | Keep the passkey private and use a separate child profile whenever possible. |
Troubleshoot a limit that is not working
The child is using the wrong profile
Sign out and check the profile name before testing. PlayStation and Xbox rules follow the child or family account; Nintendo’s main time controls are usually console-wide. A child playing on an adult profile can bypass account-specific limits.
The adult account lacks permission
On PlayStation, confirm that the signed-in adult is the family manager or an appointed parent/guardian. On Xbox, verify that the adult is marked as a parent in the Microsoft family group. For Nintendo purchases, use the parent Nintendo Account in a browser rather than the child’s account or the console menu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe time zone or day is wrong
Recheck the PlayStation child account’s time zone and each day’s schedule. On Xbox and Nintendo, inspect the day selected in the app or website. A correct duration attached to the wrong day can look like a failed timer.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Xbox time keeps running
Xbox counts time while the child is signed in. Have the child sign out when stopping, then check the Family Safety activity and limits. If the child uses Windows or Android as well as Xbox, inspect the connected-device scope of any game or app rule.
Nintendo settings do not update
Confirm that the console and phone have internet access and that the app is linked to the intended Switch or Switch 2. Remember that purchase restrictions are changed in the parent Nintendo Account, not in the app. Also test whether the rule is affecting another person because most Nintendo restrictions are system-wide.
A purchase still appears possible
Check the account used for the purchase. PlayStation’s monthly limit applies to the child account and uses the family manager’s wallet; Xbox Ask a Parent concerns the child’s request, while an adult account may need its own passkey; Nintendo spending restrictions are tied to the parent-account settings. Review the storefront and account region’s available options rather than assuming a timer blocks purchases.
A practical setup checklist
- Identify the exact console generation and the profile the child uses.
- Create or confirm the child account and family relationship.
- Give the adult account the required manager or parent role.
- Set the correct time zone and a schedule for every relevant day.
- Set the daily duration or total hours separately from the schedule.
- Decide whether the platform should notify the child or end the session where that choice is available.
- Configure purchase controls independently: monthly limit, approval request, passkey or Nintendo Account restriction.
- Test with the child profile before relying on the rule.
- Recheck the settings after a console, phone, account or region change because menu labels and feature availability can vary.
What to review as your child’s routine changes
School days, weekends, holidays and shared-console use often need different schedules. Update each day’s rule instead of assuming a single setting fits every week. When the child starts using another device, inspect whether the platform’s family controls follow the account to that device: Xbox game and app limits may span connected Windows, Xbox and Android devices, while PlayStation and Nintendo have different account and console scopes.
Review purchase settings whenever the child gains access to a new storefront or an adult profile. Keep the child’s account separate, preserve the adult credentials and verify the actual profile and device after every major change.
