The right setup depends on the phone’s ecosystem. For an iPhone, use Apple Screen Time through Family Sharing. For a supervised Android phone, use Google Family Link. If your household also uses Windows or Xbox, Microsoft Family Safety can add app and game schedules, but its mobile device screen-time controls apply only to Android.
Set a device-wide schedule or daily allowance first, then add tighter limits for individual apps. Before changing anything, confirm the child’s operating-system version, managed account, family group and other devices; menu names and available controls can change with software updates.

Choose the control system that matches the phone
Built-in limits are tied to the child’s account and operating system, not to a universal setting that works identically on every phone. Start with this choice:
| Child’s device or household need | Use | What it can control |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone in an Apple Family Sharing group | Apple Screen Time | Downtime schedules, app and category limits, content and purchase restrictions, and approval requests |
| Supervised Android phone or Chromebook | Google Family Link | Daily limits, weekly schedules and limits for individual apps |
| Windows or Xbox family group, with an Android mobile device | Microsoft Family Safety | App and game schedules across supported Microsoft devices; mobile device screen-time limits on Android |
These systems are not interchangeable. An iPhone cannot be managed with Android-only Family Link controls, and Microsoft’s mobile device screen-time feature does not provide iPhone limits. Use the platform already attached to the child’s account rather than trying to rank one service as universally best.

Prepare the child’s account and devices
Do these checks before setting a timer. They prevent the most common “the setting is missing” and “the limit works on one device but not another” problems.
- Identify every device and its software version. Record whether the child uses an iPhone, Android phone, Chromebook, tablet or computer. Apple’s current support pages show different labels for newer iOS generations, and Google and Microsoft list minimum versions for supported devices.
- Use a separate managed account. Apple requires Family Sharing and individual Apple Accounts, including a Child Account for children in the family group. Google requires the child’s own Google Account under supervision. Microsoft requires a member of the Microsoft family group.
- Update the family devices where the platform asks you to. Apple recommends updating all family devices so Screen Time settings can sync. If some Apple devices cannot update, the available route and controls may differ.
- Decide whether the rule is device-wide or app-specific. A daily device allowance controls overall use; an app limit targets a selected app or category. Most families need both.
- List essential apps. Messaging, calling, school and authentication apps may need access during downtime. Check each platform’s always-allowed or unlimited-time options before enforcing a schedule.
- Keep the parent authentication method private. Apple uses a Screen Time passcode set by the parent or organizer. Google and Microsoft use the supervising parent account. Do not give the child the credential that changes the rule.
Set limits on an iPhone with Apple Screen Time
Apple’s Family Sharing workflow lets a parent or guardian manage a child’s Screen Time from the parent’s own device. The exact labels vary by iOS generation: Apple’s iOS 26 guide uses one route, while its current family-management article describes a newer iOS 27 experience. Treat the following path as the current pattern and follow the wording shown on your devices.
Check Family Sharing first
- On the parent or family organizer’s iPhone, open Settings.
- Open Family, select the child’s name, then choose Screen Time.
- Follow the on-screen setup. The child should be a member of the family group with an individual Apple Account; Apple identifies a Child Account as the account type for children in the group.
- When prompted, create the Screen Time passcode on the parent device. Keep it separate from the child’s device passcode.
If the Family or child-specific Screen Time route is absent, verify that Family Sharing is configured, the child is signed in with the intended Apple Account, and the family devices are on compatible software. Apple says families that cannot update every device can continue using the previous experience or adjust controls on the child’s device, so the wording may not match the newest guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet a daily schedule or downtime
- From the child’s Screen Time page, open the scheduling control for time away or downtime.
- Choose a school-day schedule, a weekend schedule, or separate start and end times for each day shown.
- Save the schedule and review which apps remain available during the restricted period.
A schedule is useful when the rule is about a period of the day—for example, no entertainment apps during school or overnight. It is different from an allowance that counts a set number of minutes.

Limit selected apps or categories
- In the child’s Screen Time settings, open App Limits (the label may be grouped under limits in a newer family view).
- Add the app or category to control.
- Choose the allowed time and assign it to every day or to specific days, then save.
Use a category when you want a broad rule for several similar apps; choose an individual app when one service is the main source of use. A child can request more time, and the parent can approve or decline the request from the parent device.
Add content, purchase and feature restrictions
Screen Time also supports restrictions for apps and features, websites, purchases and other content. These controls are separate from an app’s time allowance: blocking a website or purchase does not by itself create a daily timer. Configure only the restrictions your family needs so essential functions remain usable.
Confirm syncing and passcode protection
Check the rule on the child’s device after saving it. Apple recommends keeping family devices updated for Screen Time synchronization. If the child can edit the limit, the parent-controlled Screen Time passcode was not set correctly or has been disclosed. Use the on-device recovery prompt and the organizer’s Apple Account when a passcode is forgotten; recovery options depend on the current iOS setup.

Set limits on Android with Google Family Link
Family Link is Google’s control system for a supervised child account. Google lists a parent account, a child Google Account and a supported supervised device as prerequisites. The parent can install Family Link on Android 6.0 or later, an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 or later, or a compatible Chromebook. Google also requires the parent and child to be in the same country, and the child device must meet the supported Android or ChromeOS requirements.

Set a daily device limit
- Open the Family Link app and select the child.
- Tap Screen time, then Time limits.
- Turn on Daily limit.
- Select Weekly schedule, choose a day and enter the allowed time.
- Use Apply to all days if the same allowance should apply throughout the week, or set different limits for individual days.
This is a device-level rule. Google’s setup material lists Android 6.0 or later and Chromebooks with ChromeOS 71 or later among supported child devices, subject to compatibility and account configuration.
Limit one app
- In Family Link, select the child and open Screen time > Time limits > App limits.
- Choose the app.
- Select Set limit, enter hours and minutes, and tap Done.
Google says app limits apply to that app when it is installed across the child’s supported Android and ChromeOS devices. System apps are excluded from this app-limit feature, so an app that is required for supervision or device operation may not offer a limit or block option.
Handle unlimited-time and required apps
For eligible Android 7 or later accounts, some apps can be marked Unlimited time, allowing them to remain available when the regular allowance is exhausted. Google excludes Google Kids Space from that capability. Review the list rather than assuming every installed app can be made unlimited or blocked.
Understand Google’s cross-device behavior
Google applies daily device limits separately to each Android device or Chromebook. A two-hour daily limit on a phone and a two-hour limit on a Chromebook can therefore permit two hours on each device, rather than two hours shared between them. App limits are different: for supported Android and ChromeOS devices, the app-specific limit follows the app across those devices. Make this distinction explicit when your child uses more than one screen.

Use Microsoft Family Safety when the household also has Microsoft devices
Microsoft Family Safety is most useful when the child already belongs to a Microsoft family group and uses Windows or Xbox as well as a phone. It adds app and game scheduling, but its mobile device screen-time limits apply only to Android. Do not use it as an iPhone screen-time solution.
Set an app or game schedule
- Open the Microsoft Family Safety app, or sign in at account.microsoft.com/family.
- Select the family member and the relevant platform.
- Open Set time limits, then choose Apps, features, and games.
- Enable app or game limits, select the title, and set the daily amount of time and the allowed hours.
- Choose one schedule for every day or tailor the hours by weekday.
Microsoft separates app/game limits from device screen-time limits. A game schedule does not automatically stop the child from using a website version of the same service. Microsoft says related websites must be blocked separately through family controls, and mobile device screen-time limits are available only on Android.

Use a device limit for total daily use
A daily allowance is the clearest rule when the goal is a total amount of recreational phone or Chromebook use. On Google, remember that the allowance is per device. On Apple, use the family Screen Time view and verify how the family’s devices are configured to sync.

An app limit is more precise when school, communication or navigation apps must remain available but entertainment use needs a cap. Set the app rule after the device schedule so the broad rule and the exception are easy to audit.
Best Value
Use schedules for school, sleep and weekends
Schedules answer “when may this device or app be used?” rather than “how many minutes remain?” Create different weekday and weekend windows where the platform supports them. Leave essential calling, school and safety tools available only after checking the platform’s exception controls.
Write down the intended result
- School hours: restrict entertainment categories or apps while leaving required communication and school tools available.
- Overnight: use a downtime or allowed-hours schedule rather than relying only on a daily minute count.
- Shared devices: verify whether the platform counts use per device or across supported devices before promising a family-wide total.
Cross-device limits: what carries over and what does not
| Platform | Daily device limit | App-specific limit | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Screen Time | Configured through the child’s Family Sharing Screen Time view; synchronization depends on family device and software configuration | Selected apps or categories | Menu labels differ across iOS generations; update family devices where possible |
| Google Family Link | Separate for each Android device or Chromebook | Applies across supported Android and ChromeOS installations of the app | System apps are not supported by the app-limit feature |
| Microsoft Family Safety | Mobile device screen-time controls apply only to Android | App and game schedules by platform | Website use is not stopped by an app/game limit; block related websites separately |
No built-in limit can stop use through an unrelated device, an unmanaged account or a browser route that the platform does not cover. Include tablets, Chromebooks, computers and consoles in the family rule, and test the actual paths your child uses.
Troubleshoot limits that do not behave as expected
The menu or child account is missing
- Confirm that the child is signed in to the managed account, not an adult or guest account.
- Check that the parent account has the required family role: Apple organizer or parent/guardian, Google supervising parent, or Microsoft family organizer.
- Compare the device software with the platform’s requirements. Google lists Android 6.0 or later for the parent app and supported supervised Android devices, plus ChromeOS 71 or later for Chromebooks; the exact child-device compatibility still depends on the account and device.
- On Apple, look under Settings > Family > child’s name > Screen Time on the organizer device and update family devices if possible.
The limit works on one device but not another
First identify whether the rule is supposed to be per device or cross-device. Google daily limits are per Android device or Chromebook, while Google app limits can follow the app across supported Android and ChromeOS devices. Apple synchronization depends on the family setup and software versions. Microsoft applies mobile device screen-time controls only to Android.
An app cannot be blocked or limited
On Google, system apps and some apps needed for supervision or device operation are exceptions. On Apple, check whether you selected an app/category limit, a content restriction or an allowed-during-downtime exception; these are separate controls. On Microsoft, an app/game rule does not block a website version, so add a website block when appropriate.
The child asks for more time
Review the request from the parent or organizer account rather than sharing the Screen Time passcode or family password. Approve only the extra time needed, then leave the underlying schedule unchanged if it still fits your family rule.
A passcode or parent credential is forgotten
Use the platform’s current account or on-device recovery flow. Apple’s recovery is tied to the organizer or parent setup; Google and Microsoft recovery uses the supervising account. Avoid resetting the child’s phone until the account recovery option has been exhausted, because a reset does not replace the family relationship or managed account.
Quick Recap
A short verification checklist
- On the child’s device, confirm the correct child account is signed in.
- Test the daily schedule during a non-critical period.
- Open each high-use app and verify the app-specific limit.
- Check an essential app during downtime or after the daily allowance is reached.
- Test every other phone, Chromebook, tablet or computer the child uses.
- Confirm that the parent passcode or account authentication is required to edit the rule.
- Recheck settings after major operating-system updates, because labels and available controls can change.
