The appropriate ceiling depends on the payment amount, urgency, available routes and your tolerance for retries. A cap that is too high can authorize unnecessary spending; one that is too low can reject every usable route.
This guide explains the distinction between routing fees and on-chain costs, how Lightning fees are calculated, how to choose a fixed-satoshi or percentage ceiling, and how to apply the controls documented for LND without assuming that another wallet exposes the same settings.

What a Lightning fee limit actually controls
A Lightning payment can travel directly through a channel you share with the recipient or across several channels operated by other nodes. Every forwarding node on a multi-hop route may charge a routing fee. The sender’s fee limit caps the total forwarding fee for that payment.

The limit is an authorization boundary: the payment attempt may pay any routing fee up to the ceiling, subject to the wallet and API’s rules. It is not an advance quote, a guaranteed final fee, or a universal percentage that is safe for every payment. If no route satisfies the limit, the payment can fail rather than exceed it.

Do not confuse this setting with Bitcoin on-chain fees. Channel opening, commitment transactions and channel closing can create miner-fee costs, but changing a Lightning payment’s routing cap does not change those costs. A routing cap applies to the off-chain forwarding fees for the specified payment only.
Why a route that looks cheap can still fail
Lightning nodes advertise fee policies and other routing data, but they do not reveal the exact balance available in each channel or the direction in which that balance can move. A path can therefore appear affordable and technically connected while lacking enough liquidity for your amount. The LND Builder’s Guide describes this directly: “Lack of knowledge about node balances is the primary reason that payments fail.” Increasing the fee limit can make additional paths eligible, but it cannot create liquidity or guarantee delivery.
How forwarding fees are formed
Each forwarding policy has two components. The base fee is a fixed amount charged per forwarded HTLC. The proportional fee is calculated from the amount forwarded, usually expressed in parts per million in node policy displays. A route with several hops can therefore accumulate several base fees plus the proportional charges at each hop.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Component | What it means for the payer | Why it matters when setting a cap |
|---|---|---|
| Base fee | A fixed charge for each forwarding hop | It can consume a large share of a small payment and is multiplied when a payment uses many hops. |
| Proportional fee | A charge that grows with the amount forwarded | It becomes more significant for larger payments and can make a percentage ceiling easier to reason about. |
| Multi-part payment fees | A payment split across several paths may incur base fees on each constituent path | Splitting can bypass a bottleneck while raising the total base-fee component. |
Routing software evaluates advertised fees, timelocks and other path information when selecting a route. It seeks a low-cost path, but the cheapest advertised path is not always usable because balances are private and change as payments flow. Repeated payments also improve a node’s path-finding knowledge over time; the Builder’s Guide notes, “The more payments you make, the more accurate your path finding will become!”
Fixed-satoshi versus percentage limits
There is no source-supported universal safe number. Choose a ceiling as a spending decision: decide the most you are willing to pay for routing this particular payment, then select the control that expresses that decision most clearly.

| Fixed amount in sats | The same maximum absolute routing spend applies regardless of payment size. | Easy to audit: the payment cannot spend more than the stated number of satoshis on routing. | For a tiny payment, even a modest base fee can represent a large percentage; for a large payment, the same cap may be too restrictive. |
| Fixed amount in millisats | The maximum is expressed with one-thousandth-of-a-satoshi precision. | Useful for applications that already calculate in millisatoshis and need exact unit handling. | More precision does not make the underlying route more predictable; channel liquidity and policy still vary. |
| Percentage of payment amount | The maximum grows as the invoice amount grows. | Scales naturally when payment sizes vary and makes the fee burden comparable across amounts. | A large payment can authorize a much larger absolute fee than a small one. Base fees can also make the effective percentage on small payments surprising. |
A practical calculation
Suppose your budget for routing is 20 sats on a 2,000-sat payment. A fixed cap of 20 sats states that absolute budget directly. A 1% cap also permits 20 sats for that payment. On a 100,000-sat payment, however, the same 1% cap permits 1,000 sats, while the fixed 20-sat cap remains 20 sats. Neither setting is inherently safer; they express different risk tolerances.
For small payments, first consider the likely base-fee burden. A percentage that appears low can still allow a fee that is many times the amount you intended to spend on routing, while a very low fixed cap can eliminate every multi-hop route. For larger payments, a percentage limit can silently expand the absolute budget, so calculate the resulting satoshi amount before authorizing it.
What LND exposes today
The current LND SendPaymentV2 API documents two fixed-unit fields: fee_limit_sat and fee_limit_msat. They are mutually exclusive; send one or the other, not both. The API defines the selected field as the maximum routing fee for the payment. A zero value means that only zero-fee routes are considered, which can make a payment fail when every usable path charges something. The current reference also cautions callers to set a fee limit because its documented default routing limit is zero.
The LND command-line help documents a satoshi limit option named --fee_limit and a percentage option named --fee_limit_percent. Confirm the exact spelling and behavior with the help output from the LND version you have installed before putting a command into production; command-line flags and defaults are version-sensitive.
Using the API safely
- Identify the exact call. Confirm that your application is using SendPaymentV2 or another LND method and read the matching version of its API reference. Do not copy fields from an older example into a different call.
- Choose one unit. Set
fee_limit_satwhen your budget is an integer number of satoshis, or setfee_limit_msatwhen your application budgets in millisatoshis. Sending both is invalid because the fields are mutually exclusive. - Write the ceiling into the request. A request conceptually looks like
{"payment_request":"the_invoice_string","fee_limit_sat":20}; replace the invoice value with the actual invoice and set the number to your own budget. - Handle a rejected attempt. If LND reports that no route meets the limit, decide whether to wait, try again with a different supported payment method, or deliberately raise the ceiling. Do not automatically increase the cap without an upper bound.
- Record the result. For operational software, log the requested amount, chosen limit, route result and actual fee so that later limits reflect your own payment history rather than an assumed market-wide rate.
Using the CLI
Run the installed command’s help first and locate --fee_limit or --fee_limit_percent. Then supply exactly one of those options on the payment command. For example, the relevant portion of a command may be written as lncli sendpayment --fee_limit=20; include the invoice and other arguments required by your installed release. If you choose a percentage, use --fee_limit_percent instead of the satoshi option, not both.

Do not infer current defaults from an old blog post or a different wallet wrapper. The older LND SendPayment documentation described a default of 100% for payments of 1,000 sats or less and 5% for larger payments when no limit was specified. Those figures are legacy, version-specific API documentation, not a recommended policy and not a promise that every current LND interface behaves that way.

- Start with the payment amount and purpose. A routine low-value payment can justify waiting for a better route, while a time-critical settlement may justify a larger budget. Write the budget in sats before opening the confirmation screen.
- Check what your wallet actually controls. Some wallets expose a fixed maximum, a percentage, a fee preview, or no user-set cap. The LND fields above apply to LND interfaces; they are not instructions for every mobile, desktop or custodial wallet.
- Convert percentages to sats. Multiply the invoice amount by the proposed percentage and compare the result with the amount you would genuinely accept. If the absolute number is uncomfortable, use a fixed ceiling when the wallet supports one.
- Read the estimate, if available. A wallet may show an expected route fee or an upper bound, but not every wallet provides an exact quote. Treat a displayed estimate as information, not as a guarantee that the final route will be available.
- Send once with the chosen cap. A qualifying route can still fail because channel liquidity changed between route selection and forwarding. The cap protects your budget during retries; it does not guarantee delivery.
- Decide how to recover. If the attempt fails, wait for routing information to update, reduce the amount, use a supported alternate route or payment method, or raise the ceiling only after deciding the new maximum. Avoid blind repeated retries with an expanding limit.
Why an extremely low limit can block a valid payment
A zero-fee limit is the most restrictive case. In current SendPaymentV2 terminology, zero means only routes whose total forwarding fee is zero are considered. Such routes may not exist for the recipient, especially when the sender is not directly connected.
A small nonzero cap can fail for several independent reasons:
- Every available path has a base fee above the remaining budget.
- The payment requires several hops, so base fees accumulate.
- The direct channel lacks enough balance in the direction needed.
- The wallet uses multi-part payment and the additional paths add more base fees.
- A route that met the cap became unusable as another payment changed channel liquidity.
Raising the limit can address the first two conditions by admitting more advertised paths, but it cannot solve a missing channel balance. If the recipient’s invoice amount is larger than the usable capacity on any combination of paths, retries with a higher cap will continue to fail.
Multi-part payments: useful, but not free
Multi-part payments (MPP) divide one invoice payment across multiple routes. This can work around a capacity bottleneck when no single path can carry the entire amount. It also changes the fee calculation: each constituent path may involve its own forwarding hops and base fees. A split can therefore succeed at a higher total routing cost than a single-path payment.

When comparing a wallet’s estimate with your cap, ask whether the estimate assumes one path or multiple parts. A percentage limit does not exempt base fees from each part. If a low cap causes repeated MPP failures, a slightly higher cap may be rational only when the payment’s value justifies it and the new absolute maximum is still acceptable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you know the fee before paying an invoice?
Readers often ask, “Is there any way to calculate what transaction fee will be for paying Lightning invoice before actually making transaction?” The practical answer is that you can calculate or preview a limit, and some implementations can estimate a route, but you cannot know a guaranteed final routing fee without a route that remains usable through settlement.
LND’s route selection uses advertised policies and routing data. The final path can change, and private channel balances can make an apparently valid path fail. A wallet that displays an estimate may be showing a current candidate route rather than a guaranteed charge. Check whether its wording says estimate, maximum or actual fee; those are different facts.
Probes for LND integrators
LND documents payment probes as an implementation technique for testing a route and providing users with more accurate fee information before attempting the real payment. A probe does not compensate forwarding nodes, and it may limit the use of multi-part payment. It is therefore a tool for an application that controls its routing workflow, not a universal feature that every consumer wallet offers.

Strategies that reduce overpayment without making payments impossible
Use a budget, not a favorite percentage
Choose the maximum in sats first for a payment where absolute cost matters. Use a percentage when payment sizes vary and you have also checked the resulting satoshi maximum for the largest payment you will send. Recalculate whenever the invoice amount changes.
Separate estimation from authorization
If the wallet shows an expected fee, compare it with your precommitted ceiling. Do not treat an estimate below the ceiling as permission to raise the ceiling, and do not treat a temporary estimate above it as proof that the invoice is permanently uneconomical. Network conditions and channel liquidity can change.
Keep retries bounded
Define a retry policy such as one or two attempts at the original limit, followed by a deliberate decision. Automatic escalation can turn a failed payment into an unexpectedly expensive one. Record each attempt so an operator can see whether failures are caused by the cap or by route liquidity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConsider payment size and urgency together
For a tiny payment, a few sats may be a material percentage, so waiting or using a different supported method may be preferable. For a large or urgent payment, a somewhat higher absolute routing budget may be reasonable, but calculate the worst-case sats before signing off. The decision belongs to the payer; Lightning does not define a consumer-safe universal rate.
Do not assume the cheapest advertised route is best
A path with a lower stated fee can fail because its channel balance is unavailable, while a slightly more expensive path succeeds immediately. A cap should allow the wallet some route choice, but remain below the amount you are unwilling to spend. More allowance increases optionality; it does not force the wallet to pay the maximum.
Sender limits versus node-operator fee policy
The setting discussed in this article belongs to the sender. It limits what the sender’s payment may pay to forwarding nodes. It is different from the policy configured by an operator who routes other people’s payments.
An LND node operator sets a channel’s base and proportional forwarding fees through configuration such as lnd.conf, the lncli openchannel options used when opening a channel, or lncli updatechanpolicy for an existing channel. lncli feereport reports policies and fee earnings. High forwarding fees may discourage traffic; fees set too low can deplete the channel’s usable liquidity quickly. Changing those policies changes what other senders may pay through the node, not the cap on a payment you are making.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate failure with a zero limit | No zero-fee route is available. | Set a deliberate nonzero ceiling or use a direct channel if one exists. |
| Failure after raising the cap | The added fee allowance did not solve a liquidity or direction problem. | Retry later, reduce the amount, use an alternate supported method or inspect route/liquidity information available to your implementation. |
| Displayed estimate exceeds the cap | The wallet’s current candidate route costs more than your budget. | Wait, choose another payment method or consciously authorize a higher maximum; do not silently override the cap. |
| API request rejected before routing | Both fixed-unit fields may have been supplied, or a field does not belong to the selected LND method. | Send only one of fee_limit_sat and fee_limit_msat, and verify the method’s versioned schema. |
| Payment succeeds but costs more than expected | A multi-hop or multi-part route accumulated base and proportional fees. | Inspect the actual route and fee, then lower the next payment’s absolute budget if the result was unacceptable. |
| Another wallet has no fee-limit control | The wallet may hide routing policy or manage it internally. | Read that wallet’s current documentation and use its displayed maximum or confirmation information; do not assume LND flags apply. |
A compact decision framework
- Need an absolute spending boundary? Prefer a fixed satoshi or millisatoshi limit when the wallet supports it.
- Send invoices of widely varying size? A percentage can scale, but convert it to the largest absolute amount you would permit.
- Is the payment small? Examine the impact of per-hop base fees before choosing a percentage.
- Is delivery urgent? Set a higher ceiling only if the resulting maximum is acceptable, and keep retries bounded.
- Did the payment fail? Distinguish a cap failure from a liquidity failure; raising the limit cannot repair an unavailable channel balance.
- Are you integrating LND? Use the versioned API schema, choose one fee-limit unit, and consider a documented probe when its MPP and operational trade-offs fit your design.
Checklist before authorizing a Lightning payment
- Confirm whether the displayed number is an estimate, a maximum or an already charged fee.
- Identify whether the wallet uses sats, millisats or a percentage.
- Calculate the percentage limit in satoshis for this invoice.
- Set one explicit maximum when the interface allows it.
- Remember that a zero LND limit admits only zero-fee routes.
- Allow for multiple base fees when a payment may be split or routed through several hops.
- Keep routing fees separate from on-chain channel-management costs.
- Do not raise the cap automatically after a failure.
- Verify defaults and flag names against the exact LND or wallet version in use.
