Steam’s suggestions are benchmarks—not mandatory prices—and no single regional discount is right for every game.
How to set regional prices in Steamworks
- Choose a base price for the game. Consider expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer, whether it is in Early Access, comparable games, and planned promotions. Play similar titles and review player feedback to understand what customers receive for their money. Valve cautions that pricing is not simply about undercutting competitors.
- Open pricing for the game’s packages in Steamworks. Pricing is managed by the Steamworks partner account, and you need the required pricing permissions to make changes.
- Review Steam’s conversion methods. Compare the exchange-rate, purchasing-power, and multi-variable results. Look across the complete set of currencies and region groups instead of applying one percentage reduction everywhere.
- Adjust prices where local evidence supports it. Consider relevant purchasing power, prices for comparable entertainment, exchange rates, the game’s positioning, and local customer expectations. Developers choose their prices; Valve says many developers set their own price in each currency.
- Check coverage, minimums, and timing before submitting. Confirm every desired currency has a price, check Steam’s current minimum-price breakdown, and account for release and discount timing rules.
- Revisit when there is a reason. The regional pricing explorer’s recommendations use public data dated January 2026. They are a reference point, not a guarantee that prices reflect every later market or currency change.
What Steam’s three conversion methods tell you
Steam presents three ways to compare a base price with prices in other currencies. Each answers a different question; none establishes what players of a particular game will be willing to pay.

| Method | What it considers | Useful as | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange-rate conversion | The exchange rate at the indicated time | A currency-conversion reference | It does not account for local purchasing power or comparable entertainment costs. |
| Purchasing-power conversion | Public purchasing-power data for a country or region | A broad affordability benchmark | It is not a game-specific willingness-to-pay study. |
| Multi-variable conversion | Local purchasing power, expected comparable entertainment costs, and exchange rate | A broader benchmark combining several factors | It remains a recommendation; developers can research and set their own prices. |
Steam’s regional pricing explorer reports 37 currencies and 4 region groups. Its conversion methods use public data as of January 2026, so treat the displayed results as dated guidance and inspect the current figures when preparing a submission.
How to decide whether a regional price needs adjustment
Start with the Steam suggestions, then make a game-specific decision. A currency conversion can be a useful baseline, but a price that merely tracks exchange rates may not match local affordability. A broad purchasing-power adjustment can also miss how players value a particular genre or the prices of entertainment they compare it with.

- Compare the game with relevant titles, not simply the cheapest available games. Account for scope, expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer features, and Early Access status.
- Use local purchasing power and comparable entertainment costs as context, rather than treating either as an automatic formula.
- Consider customer expectations and your launch and promotion plans. A regional price should make sense for the game and market, not just yield a uniform percentage discount.
- Do not assume that one fixed discount from the US price will be appropriate in every region. Steam leaves regional pricing choices to developers.
Steam pricing rules that can affect availability and sales
Missing currency prices
If a supported currency has no price, customers who rely on that currency may be unable to buy the game. Valve gives Japanese yen as an example. Review all relevant currency entries before release rather than assuming Steam will fill gaps automatically.
Minimum prices
Steam’s documentation says the minimum base price must be at least equivalent to the Multi-Variable Conversion method for the $0.99 USD tier. The lowest possible transaction price is roughly equivalent to $0.49 USD after a 50% discount. A low base price or discount can therefore put a game below the threshold in some currencies, potentially making it unavailable there or constraining discount options. Minimums can change, so check Steam’s current breakdown before setting a very low price.

Release and discount timing
- Steam asks developers to wait until more than 30 days after release before changing a price.
- An increase in one or more currencies starts a 30-day cooldown before you can submit discounts. Plan regional increases around intended sales.
Review, publication, and tax treatment
Valve reviews initial prices and proposed adjustments; its documentation says review usually takes one to two business days. Price changes cannot be scheduled automatically, though you can choose when to publish reviewed prices. Check every value carefully because Valve does not guarantee it will catch every input error. Displayed tax treatment follows local norms and regulations, so do not assume every displayed price treats tax the same way.
Where to verify Steam’s current guidance
Before submitting prices, consult Valve’s Steamworks pricing documentation for the workflow, minimums, and timing rules, and the regional pricing documentation for supported currencies, region groups, and conversion guidance. The right price for a specific game depends on its base-price target, genre, playtime, comparable titles, audience, launch plans, and commercial goals.
