To reduce unwanted contact, tighten each route separately: direct messages, friend or follow requests, search by phone or email, group invitations, and tags or mentions. Start with the narrowest message audience you can use, require approval for followers where the service supports it, review discoverability and group controls, then block or report accounts that persist. A private profile by itself does not close every contact channel.
Why one privacy switch is not enough
Social platforms expose several independent ways for another person to reach you. Someone may send a direct message, request to follow or connect, find your account through a phone number or email address, add you to a group, or tag your username in a post. A setting that limits one route usually leaves the others unchanged.

Use the controls in this order:
- Messages: restrict who can start a chat and whether people outside your network are filtered into requests or rejected.
- Followers, friends and invitations: require approval or limit these actions to existing connections when the service offers that choice.
- Discoverability: review whether your account can be suggested or found through a phone number, email address or synchronized contacts.
- Groups and shared spaces: limit who can add you to group chats, communities or events.
- Tags, mentions and comments: prevent unfamiliar accounts from drawing attention to your profile.
Menu names and available choices can change with an app update. Age, country, account type and an existing conversation can also change what you see. Treat the controls displayed in your own account as authoritative.

1. Open the privacy and contact area
Look for Settings, Settings and privacy, Privacy, Safety or Visibility. Search within the settings screen for “messages,” “requests,” “followers,” “discoverability,” “contacts,” “groups,” “tags” and “mentions.” If a platform has separate account and safety sections, check both.

2. Narrow message requests first
Choose the smallest audience that still lets you communicate with people you actually need. Depending on the service, an outside person’s message may go to a request folder, be screened, or be refused entirely. A private account does not necessarily change this routing, so inspect the message controls directly.
3. Require approval for follows or connections
Turn on follower or friend approval where available. On services that distinguish followers from contacts, set each audience independently. “Connections only” can stop new followers without stopping every message or invitation route.
4. Reduce account discovery
Review settings for phone-number and email-based lookup, contact synchronization, address-book uploads and account suggestions. The exact options differ by platform and region, and some services do not provide a single switch for every identifier. Disable any discovery method you do not need, and remove previously synchronized contacts if the platform offers a separate deletion control.

Set group-chat invitations to the narrowest audience available. Restrict tags and mentions from accounts you do not follow, and use manual approval for tags if that option is offered. Comment controls can also reduce replies that expose your profile to strangers.
6. Handle accounts that ignore the settings
Block the account, report abusive or deceptive behavior, and keep evidence if the contact involves threats, impersonation or attempted fraud. Blocking is an account-level action; it does not replace reviewing the broader privacy controls.
7. Recheck after major updates
Platforms revise labels, defaults and age-based rules. Reopen the privacy screens after a significant app update or when you change from a personal to a professional account. Confirm that the setting still applies to new conversations and group invitations.
Facebook: find the relevant privacy areas
In Facebook, open Settings & privacy, select Settings, and review the sections under Audience and visibility. Two useful areas are How people find and contact you and Blocking.

Use this area to review who can locate or initiate contact with your profile. Facebook’s available choices can vary by profile type, so read the options shown on the account rather than relying on a universal friend-request label. Some defaults are more private for minors in certain regions.

Blocking
Add persistent or harmful accounts to the blocked list. Blocking an individual is different from changing who can find you; use both when necessary. If you manage more than one profile type, check the privacy controls for each profile separately.
Instagram and Messenger: separate messages, groups, tags and mentions
Instagram and Messenger expose several distinct controls. Use the current labels in the app, because the educational guidance describing these features is not a single, fixed step-by-step settings page.
Instagram direct messages
Instagram lets you decide who may send direct messages. Depending on the sender category, a message from an account you do not follow can be placed in Message requests or not delivered. Choose the stricter outcome if you do not need to hear from unknown accounts. Review each sender category separately; changing one category does not necessarily change all of them.

Instagram group chats
Use the group-chat invitation control to limit who can add you. A setting that blocks one-to-one requests may not block group additions, so verify the group option independently.
Tags and mentions
Instagram provides controls over tags and mentions from accounts you do not follow. Restrict both if strangers are drawing your username into posts or comments. If manual tag approval is available, enable it so a tag does not appear on your profile automatically.
Messenger message delivery
Messenger routes messages by sender category. Review the delivery choices for people who are not your friends, people who have your phone number, and other categories shown in the app. Select a request-only or no-delivery option where appropriate. Messenger’s routing is separate from Instagram’s, even when the accounts are linked.
TikTok: age and account context determine the choices
TikTok’s direct-message controls depend on age and account context, and availability can vary by region and app version. The platform’s Community Controls guidance was updated September 10, 2024.

Ages 13–15
Direct messaging is unavailable for users aged 13 through 15. There is no DM audience setting to enable for this age group.

Ages 16–17
Users aged 16 or 17 see different defaults and connection categories from adults. Messages from certain categories can be routed or turned off. Check the categories presented in Privacy and the direct-message section of the account.
Eligible adult accounts
TikTok describes choices such as Everyone, Friends (followers you follow back) and No one for eligible users. Select Friends when you want mutual connections only, or No one when you do not need direct messages. If your screen shows fewer choices, follow the setting available for your age, region and account type.
Why a TikTok setting may look different
Family-safety settings, age verification, regional rules and app-version changes can remove or rename options. Do not infer that an option is missing because the account is misconfigured; first check the current version and any linked family controls.
Snapchat: use Friends for contact, with a phone-contact exception
Snapchat states, “By default, only your Snapchat friends can contact you on Snapchat.” In the app, open Settings, tap Who Can Contact Me, and choose Friends.
What Friends restricts
The setting limits ordinary Snapchat contact to accounts that are your friends. It is the platform’s documented narrow audience for this control.
The phone-contacts exception
Snapchat notes that a person in your phone contacts may still be able to message you before adding you as a Snapchat friend. Therefore, Friends reduces unsolicited contact but does not guarantee that every person known to your phone address book is blocked.
When a message still arrives
From the chat, use Snapchat’s report or block action for the unwanted account. Blocking the sender handles the immediate account; keep the Friends setting enabled for future contacts.
X: direct-message requests and follower approval are different
Limit message requests
Open Privacy and safety > Direct Messages. X allows an account to accept message requests from everyone; turning that broad option off reduces unsolicited requests. Review the other sender categories shown on the screen and keep only the ones you need.

Understand the exceptions
The general everyone setting is not absolute. Verified accounts may be able to message when the relevant option is enabled, and someone with whom you already had a direct-message conversation may still be able to contact you after the broad setting is disabled. If a previous correspondent continues to reach you, block that account or leave the conversation as well as changing the general setting.
Require approval for followers
Follower approval is controlled by protected posts, not by the direct-message setting. When posts are protected, people must request to follow and you can approve or deny them. Public posts do not require follower approval. Decide whether the reach of public posts is worth leaving the account open to automatic follows.

LinkedIn’s contact help says members can choose message types and who can send invitations in Data privacy settings. Review each message type and invitation audience instead of assuming that limiting one closes the others.

To restrict followers, go to Settings & Privacy > Visibility > Followers. Set Who can follow you to Your connections to limit following to first-degree connections.
Why the distinction matters
The connections-only follower setting does not establish that every message or invitation route is closed. Check contact and invitation controls separately, especially if your profile is public for professional reasons.

Discoverability: reduce contact before it starts
After changing direct-message settings, inspect how strangers locate the account. Look for switches covering:
- Search by phone number.
- Search by email address.
- Uploaded or synchronized address-book contacts.
- Account suggestions based on mutual contacts or other activity.
- Public profile links and searchable usernames.
Do not assume every platform offers all five controls. The available settings may depend on region, age, account type or whether a phone number is verified. Where deletion of uploaded contacts is offered, remove old data as well as turning off future synchronization.
Groups, tags, mentions and comments need their own review
Group invitations
Group additions can arrive even when one-to-one messages are restricted. Set invitations to friends, mutual connections or another narrow category if the service provides it. Leave groups that repeatedly re-add you, then block the accounts responsible.
Tags and mentions
Restrict who can tag or mention you, especially accounts you do not follow. Manual approval prevents an unwanted tag from appearing on your profile without your consent. A mention in someone else’s post may still be visible to that post’s audience even if it does not appear on your profile, so blocking or reporting the account may be necessary.
Comments and replies
Comment filters and reply permissions reduce public contact that can lead to private messages. Use them when the problem is attention drawn to your posts rather than direct inbox requests.

Troubleshooting when strangers still reach you
The person had contacted you before
Some platforms preserve an existing conversation as an exception to a general message-request rule. Block the account or remove the conversation-specific access, then recheck the general setting.
The sender is in your phone contacts
Snapchat explicitly documents this exception. Review contact synchronization and remove the person from the device address book if appropriate, then block the account in Snapchat.
You changed privacy but still receive group additions
Group invitations are often separate from direct messages. Return to the group-invitation control and choose a narrower audience; blocking the inviter may be required for repeated attempts.
You can limit followers but not messages
Follower approval and message delivery are independent on X and LinkedIn, and similar separations exist elsewhere. Configure both controls rather than treating a private or connections-only profile as a complete barrier.
A setting is missing
Check age eligibility, region, account type, family controls and app version. Platforms may hide choices that are unavailable for the account. Use the labels currently displayed instead of following an older tap sequence.
An account keeps using new profiles
Block and report each violating account, preserve evidence, and tighten discovery, tag and mention settings. If the behavior includes threats, extortion or credible safety concerns, contact local authorities or a qualified support service.
