In ChatGPT, task alerts are managed under Settings > Notifications, while model-training preferences are under Settings > Data controls. Memory, connected apps, and logged-in browser sessions have separate controls and risks.
Set up ChatGPT task notifications
For scheduled tasks in ChatGPT, open Settings > Notifications and choose Push, Email, or both. OpenAI’s Scheduled tasks in ChatGPT help page documents these options.
- Choose where alerts go. Select push notifications, email, or both in Settings > Notifications.
- Allow device or browser notifications. If browser alerts are blocked, enable them in the browser permission prompt or site settings. For mobile push alerts, create the task in a supported ChatGPT mobile app and grant notification permission when asked.
- Review the task. Open Scheduled to edit, pause, or delete a task.
Availability can depend on your account, app and app version, and workspace settings. If a task is triggered by an app event, review its connected account, event, conditions, and instructions. OpenAI currently lists Gmail, Slack, and GitHub activity as supported event-trigger sources, subject to eligibility and workspace settings; some actions pause for approval. These details can change.
Separate model training from chat history
To change whether new conversations may be used to improve OpenAI models, open Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says that when this preference is off, new conversations are not used to train its models. They may still remain in chat history, so this setting is not a chat-deletion or complete retention control. See Data controls in ChatGPT.

Review memory and personalization separately
Memory is a distinct personalization control, not the same setting as model improvement. OpenAI describes memory as optional and says users can review, edit, or delete saved memories, or turn memory off. You can also disconnect app access. For current controls, see Memory FAQ.
Limit connected-app access and agent actions
A connected app can expose data to an agent or enable it to take actions. Before connecting one, decide whether the task needs it and review the permissions available to you. OpenAI’s connector guidance recommends enabling only the apps needed for the task and reviewing permissions regularly.

- Check which accounts and data sources are connected.
- Where workspace controls allow it, review who can use each app and which read or write actions are enabled.
- Check when an action requires approval. OAuth scopes, provider approval, and ChatGPT action settings are separate checks; do not assume that changing one changes the others.
- For event-triggered tasks, verify the account, event, conditions, and task instructions. Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare administrators may need to enable relevant workspace permissions.
Workspace owners may restrict app availability and related agent actions. The settings exposed to an individual user can therefore differ in a managed workspace.
Protect sensitive browser sessions and logins
An agent working on logged-in sites or through connected apps may encounter sensitive information or act on your behalf. OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent guidance recommends avoiding passwords and private information in prompts, using browser takeover for sensitive login input, considering the sensitivity of sites the agent visits, and clearing remote browser data after sensitive sessions. Cookies may persist between sessions.

Stop a task if something seems suspicious. OpenAI also describes confirmation for high-impact actions and supervised watch mode for certain sites, but warns that safeguards do not eliminate all risks. Approval prompts and supervision are not guarantees of safety.

These steps describe ChatGPT, not a universal configuration for every autonomous agent. Check your provider’s current settings and documentation; in a managed account, ask the workspace administrator which controls are enabled. Keep the control types distinct: notifications govern how you receive task updates; training preferences govern model improvement; memory affects personalization; app and action permissions govern connected access; and browser-session controls address logged-in data and persistent cookies.
