For useful chip-sector monitoring, create separate upside, downside, and event alerts rather than relying on one price level. An alert sends a notification; it does not place a trade.
What a semiconductor price alert does
A price alert watches a selected security and notifies you when a condition is met. For a semiconductor company or sector ETF, that condition can be an absolute price, a percentage change, a moving-average relationship, trading volume, an earnings report, or company news, depending on the platform.

An absolute-price alert is the simplest example: notify me if the security rises above $X or falls below $Y. A percentage alert is useful when the stock’s normal price changes over time: notify me after a specified move from the prior close. Technical and event alerts add context, helping you distinguish an ordinary move from one associated with earnings, news, or unusual activity.

The notification does not guarantee that the market is still at the target price when you act.

Prepare the alert before opening an app
Confirm the exact security
Search the complete ticker and verify the exchange, security name, and whether the result is a common stock or an ETF. Semiconductor companies can have similar names, while broad, regional, leveraged, and narrowly focused ETFs may appear beside one another. A wrong symbol creates a perfectly functioning alert on the wrong investment.
Choose the condition that answers your question
- Target price: Use an above trigger for a potential upside level or a below trigger for a support, risk, or exit level.
- Percentage move: Use a percentage-change condition when you care about the size of a move rather than one fixed dollar price.
- Moving average: Use this when the platform supports a technical threshold and you want an alert tied to a trend measure.
- Volume: Use unusual-volume monitoring to add context to a sharp price move where the platform offers it.
- Earnings or news: Add event alerts so a price notification is not viewed without the information that may explain it.
Decide where the message should arrive
Available delivery methods differ by service. Depending on the platform, you may have push notifications, email, text messages, desktop pop-ups, sounds, or an in-app message center. Enable the relevant operating-system, browser, and app permissions before relying on an alert.
Set alerts in Fidelity Active Trader Pro
Fidelity’s Active Trader Pro documentation states: “You may set Price Alerts on stocks, ETFs, options, and mutual funds.” That coverage includes both individual semiconductor stocks and semiconductor ETFs.

- Choose Set Alert.
- Enter the exact symbol and select the security returned by the search.
- Choose Price Alert as the alert type.
- Choose the trigger and enter its parameters. The documented choices include Price Movement (above or below a target) and % Change Since Close.
- Select the available delivery behavior, then choose Set Alert to save it.
Active Trader Pro can show a pop-up indicator and/or play a custom sound. Alerts also appear in Fidelity’s Message Center, giving you an in-platform place to review them if you miss the desktop notification.

Layer several Fidelity thresholds
Fidelity’s watch-list help documents up to nine price triggers on one security. The documented trigger types include price tripwires, percentage change, and moving averages. This allows a semiconductor ETF, for example, to have separate levels for a downside warning, an upside target, a daily percentage move, and trend-related conditions instead of compressing every decision into one alert.
Use a small, labeled set of levels that each has a purpose. If every minor fluctuation produces a message, the alerts become noise and the important warning is easier to miss. Review the list after a position, thesis, or target changes and remove levels that no longer represent a decision.
Set alerts in Schwab Mobile
- Open Schwab Mobile and select Markets.
- Search for the semiconductor stock or ETF symbol.
- Open the quote and tap Set an Alert.
- Select Target price.
- Choose the direction or alert type, enter the target, and tap Set Alert.
To manage alerts in the mobile app, open Profile > Stock Alerts. You can edit open alerts there. The Triggered tab retains triggered alerts for up to 30 days, which is useful for checking when a level was reached after you were away from the market.
Add event context in Schwab Mobile
The same setup area supports alerts for earnings reports and other news or events. Add an earnings alert when a price target is close to a scheduled report, and add news monitoring when a company-specific announcement could change the interpretation of a move. Keep the event alerts separate from price thresholds so you can identify whether the message was caused by a market level or an information event.

Set alerts on Schwab.com
- Sign in to Schwab.com and open Profile > Alerts > Securities Alerts.
- Choose the semiconductor stock or ETF you want to monitor.
- Select the alert category and configure the condition, such as price or volume.
- Choose the available delivery preferences and save the alert.
The securities-alert interface documents customizable delivery and supports price, volume, earnings, news, and research/report alerts. The web interface is therefore suitable when you want a price level plus the event and activity information that may accompany it.
Schwab explicitly notes that alerts created in Schwab Mobile are not synchronized with alerts in thinkorswim or on Schwab.com. If you use more than one Schwab interface, inspect each interface’s alert list and avoid assuming that a mobile alert exists on the website, or vice versa.
Set a price alert in Yahoo Finance for Android
- Look up the stock or ETF quote in the Yahoo Finance Android app.
- From the quote’s Summary tab, open the Alerts icon.
- Tap Create new price alert.
- Enter the Target price.
- Tap Done.
Yahoo Finance says a push notification is sent when the target is met. Its notification settings also include customized price alerts and significant-price-change notifications for followed stocks. Those messages remain dependent on your device or browser notification permissions, so allow notifications for the app and check that the operating system has not silenced them.

Choose the interface that matches where you already review the security. A brokerage interface is convenient when the alert is part of an eventual trading decision; a quote-tracking app can be convenient when you monitor holdings across accounts. Verify synchronization rather than assuming that alerts created on one device or website appear everywhere.

Build a useful semiconductor alert plan
Use an upside and downside pair
A single upside alert answers only one question: has the price reached my target? Pair it with a downside level if you also need to know when the thesis, risk limit, or support area may be under pressure. The two levels should represent decisions you have already defined, not arbitrary round numbers.
Add a percentage condition for fast moves
Semiconductor stocks and ETFs can move materially without reaching a long-term dollar target. A percentage-change alert catches a move relative to the previous close, while an absolute target remains fixed. Use both only when each would lead to a different action; otherwise, duplicate notifications can obscure the signal.
Use moving averages deliberately
When supported, a moving-average alert can identify a trend condition that changes as prices and the average change. It is different from a fixed-price alert and should be labeled with the time period or rule you intend to monitor. Do not treat a moving-average crossing as an automatic buy or sell instruction.
Pair price with volume
A price move accompanied by unusual volume may deserve a different review from a move on ordinary activity. Schwab.com documents volume alerts, while Fidelity’s documented watch-list triggers include price, percentage, and moving-average conditions rather than a stated volume trigger in that workflow. If your platform does not offer volume alerts, do not substitute an unsupported condition; check the quote manually when a price alert arrives.
Watch earnings and news around the level
An alert just before or after earnings can be more informative when the earnings event is flagged separately. Schwab Mobile and Schwab.com document earnings and news/event alerts. A price alert alone cannot tell you whether the move reflects a company announcement, sector news, or broad market activity.
Check delivery and maintain the alert list
- Test permissions: Confirm push notifications in the app and operating-system settings; for browser alerts, confirm the browser permission and that notifications are not blocked.
- Check the destination: Verify the email address, phone settings, desktop sound, or in-app message location offered by your platform.
- Review open alerts: Edit the target when your plan changes and delete stale levels after a trade, earnings cycle, or change in thesis.
- Inspect each interface: If you use mobile, web, and a separate trading application, review each alert list because synchronization may not be provided.
- Record the reason: Give each alert a short label or note such as “downside risk,” “earnings week,” or “trend check” where the platform permits it.
Troubleshoot missed or unexpected notifications
The price reached the level but no message arrived
- Confirm that the alert was saved and remains open rather than already triggered or deleted.
- Check whether the symbol, exchange, and target direction are correct.
- Review app, browser, and operating-system notification permissions.
- Look in the platform’s in-app history or message center; Fidelity places alerts in Message Center, and Schwab Mobile keeps triggered alerts for up to 30 days.
- Check whether the alert was created in a different interface that does not synchronize with the one you are viewing.
You receive too many messages
Delete duplicate levels, separate price alerts from event alerts, and retain only thresholds tied to an actual decision. On Fidelity, up to nine triggers can be placed on one security, but the ability to create many alerts does not make every alert useful.
The notification arrived after the price moved away
Alerts notify you that a condition was met; they are not orders and do not reserve an execution price. Open the quote, review the relevant news or earnings information, and decide whether current conditions still justify an order. Avoid converting a late notification into an automatic trade without checking liquidity, spread, and your own risk rules.

Monitoring a semiconductor ETF without an immediate trade
Create an upside target-price alert, a downside target-price alert, and a percentage-change alert for a move large enough to merit investigation. Add an earnings or news alert only if the ETF’s platform provides relevant event coverage. Label each alert by purpose, then remove levels that no longer match your monitoring plan.
Watching an individual chip company through earnings
Set the price level you would review before earnings, a separate downside level for risk, and an earnings alert. On a platform that supports it, add a volume alert. When a notification arrives, identify whether it was a target, percentage, volume, earnings, or news trigger before deciding what to do.
Using multiple services
If your holdings are at one broker but you follow markets in another app, create the alert in the service you will actually check. Keep a written list of active thresholds and inspect both services after changes; Schwab’s documented lack of synchronization between Schwab Mobile, thinkorswim, and Schwab.com illustrates why a second interface should never be assumed to contain the same alerts.
