1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo monitor the Nasdaq-100, search for the index symbol NDX in a charting or brokerage app, create an alert at your chosen level, select whether it should trigger on any crossing or only an upward or downward move, set its frequency and expiration, and enable a notification channel. Check the saved alert’s symbol, data feed and permissions before relying on it.
If your service does not offer NDX, you can monitor a Nasdaq-100 exchange-traded fund such as QQQ or QQQM instead. That alert will track the ETF’s own share price, not the index level, so the numbers cannot be substituted directly.

What you are actually alerting on
The Nasdaq-100 is an index of 100 of the largest domestic and international non-financial companies listed on The Nasdaq Stock Market, selected using market capitalization criteria. Its standard market symbol is NDX. An alert on NDX is therefore an alert on an index value rather than an order to buy or sell a security.

An alert is a notification that a defined condition occurred. It is not a forecast, a trading recommendation or a guarantee that you can transact at the displayed level. The exact timing depends on the platform, the symbol’s data feed and any delay attached to your account.
Decide what the alert must detect
Write the intended event in one sentence before opening the alert dialog. For example: “Notify me when NDX rises through 20,000,” “Notify me when NDX falls below 18,500,” or “Notify me whenever NDX touches 19,250 from either direction.” This prevents a threshold that sounds right but triggers on the wrong movement.
| Condition | What it detects | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Crossing | A move through the level from either direction | You care about the level being reached, whether price is rising or falling |
| Crossing up | A move from below the level to above it | You want an upside break or recovery through a reference level |
| Crossing down | A move from above the level to below it | You want a downside break or loss of support |
| Greater than | The value is above the specified threshold | You want the alert after NDX exceeds a level, subject to the service’s trigger rules |
| Less than | The value is below the specified threshold | You want the alert after NDX falls under a level |
| Moving up or down by a percentage over bars | A specified percentage move over a chosen number of chart bars | You care about the size of a move during an interval rather than one absolute index level |
Platforms can define “crossing,” equality and repeated triggers differently. Read the condition description in the dialog and use a bar-close setting when you do not want an intrabar touch to trigger the alert.
What to check before creating an alert
- Symbol: Verify NDX, not an ETF, futures contract, CFD or similarly named derivative.
- Quote currency and scale: Make sure the displayed index value uses the scale you intend. Do not copy a threshold from an ETF chart.
- Data status: Determine whether the quote is real-time, delayed or dependent on a market-data entitlement.
- Trading session: Check whether the service evaluates the symbol only during regular hours or also publishes indicative, pre-market or after-hours values.
- Alert capacity: Review any account limit on active alerts before designing a large set of thresholds.
- Delivery permissions: Confirm that mobile, desktop, email or webhook permissions are enabled on the device or browser you will use.
Step-by-step: create a Nasdaq-100 alert
- Open your charting or brokerage app. Use the platform’s symbol search and enter
NDXor “Nasdaq-100 Index.” Select the result whose description identifies the index itself. - Open the alert tool. Depending on the service, the control may be on the chart toolbar, in an alert manager, in a right-click menu, in a drawing panel or beside the current price scale. If you cannot find it, search the platform’s help for “create alert” rather than assuming the symbol is unsupported.
- Select the condition. Choose crossing, crossing up, crossing down, greater than, less than or a percentage-over-bars operator. Match the direction to the sentence you wrote before setup.
- Enter the level or percentage. Type the exact NDX value, such as 19,250, and check the decimal and thousands separators used by your locale. For a percentage condition, select the chart interval and number of bars as well as the percentage.
- Choose trigger frequency. Common choices include once, every time, once per bar close and once per minute. Use “once” for a one-off threshold notification; use a repeat option only when you genuinely need subsequent crossings or updates.
- Set an expiration. Pick a date and time that matches the period in which the alert is useful. Some services do not offer open-ended alerts for watchlist-based alerts, so an expiration may be mandatory.
- Name the alert precisely. A name such as “NDX crosses down 18,500 — daily risk review” records the instrument, direction and level without implying that the alert predicts the next move.
- Choose delivery actions. Select the channels you will notice promptly, such as a mobile notification, desktop pop-up, email, webhook or sound. Turn on each channel’s operating-system and browser permissions.
- Save and inspect the alert. In the alert manager, verify the symbol, condition, threshold, frequency, expiration and actions. Correct any field before closing the dialog.
- Record the setup. For alerts that support a webhook or external automation, document the destination and authentication separately. Do not place private keys or passwords in an alert name or message.
TradingView’s documented alert controls
TradingView documents several ways to start an alert: the chart toolbar, the alert manager, a chart’s right-click menu, the drawing panel and the plus button beside the current price scale. The exact placement can change with the interface, but each route leads to the same basic choices: symbol, condition, value, trigger behavior, expiration and actions.
Its documented trigger options include once, every time, once per bar close and once per minute. An expiration date can be selected; open-ended alerts are not available for watchlist alerts. The service lists mobile-app notifications, desktop pop-ups, email, webhooks and sound as possible actions. Mobile actions require the app, while pop-ups require browser notification permission.

Those controls describe the platform’s functionality, not the availability of real-time NDX data in every account or country. Confirm the symbol’s feed and any entitlement shown in your own account before treating an alert as timely.
Choosing the right trigger frequency
Once
Choose this for a single notification when a level is first met. It is useful for a planned review or a one-time reminder, but it will not notify you about a later recrossing unless you create a new alert.
Every time
Use this when repeated events matter, such as NDX moving above and below a boundary several times. Repeated notifications can become noisy in a sideways market, so pair this setting with a meaningful level and a channel you can mute or manage.
Once per bar close
This waits for the selected chart bar to close before firing. It reduces notifications caused by a temporary intrabar spike, but it also means the message can arrive after the level was first touched. The bar interval is therefore part of the alert’s meaning.
Once per minute
This can provide recurring checks without a message on every tick. It is still subject to the symbol’s feed timing and the platform’s processing rules; it should not be described as guaranteed real-time delivery.

Notification channels and permission checks
| Channel | What to verify | Typical failure |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | The app is installed, signed in and allowed to send notifications | Operating-system focus mode or notification permission blocks the alert |
| Desktop pop-up | Browser notifications are allowed for the site and the browser is running as required | Permission was denied, or the browser closed the notification session |
| The address is verified and the message is not filtered | Spam filtering or an outdated account address hides the message | |
| Webhook | The endpoint is reachable and accepts the platform’s request format | Authentication, firewall or payload handling rejects the request |
| Sound | Device volume and the platform’s sound setting are enabled | Muted system audio makes a successful alert appear silent |
Use two independent channels for a level that matters, then send a harmless test alert at a nearby level to confirm receipt. A test verifies delivery, not the accuracy of the market-data feed.

If NDX is not available
Some services do not list the index or restrict access to a particular data package. Nasdaq’s index overview lists QQQ and QQQM among U.S.-listed ETFs associated with the Nasdaq-100. You can set an alert on one of those funds if your goal is to monitor the fund’s traded price.
Do not convert an NDX threshold directly into an ETF threshold. An ETF has its own share price, supply and demand, trading session and market mechanics. For example, an alert at 20,000 on NDX does not mean an alert at 20,000 on QQQ or QQQM. If you use an ETF proxy, write the alert name and notes to identify that it tracks the fund, not the index, and choose a level based on the fund’s own chart.
Monitoring an ETF for notifications also does not require buying it. A platform that provides the relevant quote can often create an alert without a position, but account rules vary.
How to compare services before choosing one
If you have access to several charting or brokerage platforms, compare the features that determine whether the notification answers your question.

| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Actual instrument | Is the symbol truly NDX, and is the index description distinct from derivatives and ETFs? |
| Data feed | Is the value real-time or delayed? Which exchange or index feed supplies it, and is an entitlement required? |
| Conditions | Does the service support crossing, directional crossing, greater-than/less-than and percentage-over-bars rules? |
| Trigger behavior | Can you choose once, repeated, bar-close or timed-frequency behavior? |
| Delivery | Are mobile, desktop, email, webhook and sound actions available and reliable on your devices? |
| Expiration | Can you set a date and time, and are open-ended alerts restricted for watchlists? |
| Limits and cost | How many alerts can be active, and does your account need a subscription or data package? |
| Session handling | Does the alert evaluate only regular trading hours or the platform’s full published session? |
Current limits, subscription prices, data entitlements and delivery latency are account- and region-dependent. Verify them in the service’s current documentation or account screen rather than relying on an old comparison.

Upside threshold
Goal: know when NDX moves above 20,000. Select NDX, choose crossing up or greater than, enter 20,000, select once per bar close if you want confirmation at the end of the selected interval, set an expiration and enable mobile plus email delivery. Name it “NDX above 20,000 — bar close.”
Downside threshold
Goal: know when NDX falls below 18,500. Select crossing down or less than, enter 18,500 and choose a frequency that will not repeat unnecessarily. If the alert is for a short monitoring window, set an expiration at the end of that window so an old condition cannot surprise you later.
Either-direction touch
Goal: receive a message whenever NDX reaches 19,250 from above or below. Choose crossing, not crossing up or crossing down. Use “every time” only if repeated visits matter; otherwise select once and recreate it after reviewing the event.

Goal: detect a 2% rise over five hourly bars. Choose the platform’s moving-up-by-percentage operator, enter 2%, select the hourly interval and five bars, then confirm how the platform defines the starting value. This is a different rule from a fixed NDX level and can trigger at many absolute prices.
Best Value
Validate an alert before relying on it
- Open the saved alert details rather than trusting the name alone.
- Check that the symbol field identifies NDX and not a similarly named instrument.
- Read the condition and compare it with the intended direction.
- Confirm the number, chart interval, trigger frequency and expiration.
- Check the displayed data status and any delayed-data notice.
- Send a controlled test through the chosen channel, where the platform permits testing.
- After the first live notification, compare the message’s reported value and time with the chart’s value and time.
This review catches configuration mistakes; it cannot remove delays or differences between data feeds.
Troubleshooting common failures
No NDX result appears
Broaden the search from “Nasdaq-100” to NDX, inspect the index category and check whether your account has the required market-data package. Do not select a futures, CFD or ETF result merely because its name contains “Nasdaq-100.” If the index is genuinely unavailable, decide whether an ETF’s own price answers your question before creating a proxy alert.
The alert fired in the wrong direction
Open the condition details. “Crossing” allows movement from either side; use crossing up or crossing down when direction matters. Greater-than and less-than rules may remain true after the first move, so review the selected frequency to prevent repeated or unexpected messages.
The alert arrived late
Check whether the symbol is delayed, whether you selected once per bar close or once per minute, and whether the device or email service queued the notification. A platform cannot deliver an earlier message than the data it receives. If timing is critical, compare the feed status and entitlement for the exact NDX symbol.
No notification arrived
Inspect the alert manager to see whether it is still active or has expired. Then check app permissions, browser permissions, email spam filtering, device focus modes, sound volume and webhook logs. Recreate a short-lived test alert at a level near the current value to isolate delivery from market-condition problems.
Too many messages
Change “every time” to “once” or “once per bar close,” raise the threshold’s significance, or replace several nearby alerts with one level that represents the decision you actually need to make. Review and delete expired or redundant alerts regularly.
Operational and risk limits
- An index alert does not execute a trade, reserve liquidity or guarantee that a product can be bought or sold at the alert value.
- NDX and an ETF proxy can diverge because they are different instruments; an ETF’s share price also reflects its own trading conditions.
- Intraday touches can disappear before a bar closes, so the chosen interval changes what “reached the level” means.
- Data-feed delays, outages, browser suspension and mobile operating-system restrictions can prevent immediate delivery.
- Expiration prevents stale alerts from remaining active indefinitely; include the end date in your review routine.
- Use alert messages as prompts to inspect current information, not as a substitute for a documented investment plan or risk limit.
Maintain a useful alert set
Keep a short register of active alerts with the symbol, condition, level, interval, expiration and purpose. Separate long-term reference levels from alerts tied to a particular event or trading session. When your market view or plan changes, edit or delete obsolete alerts instead of layering new ones over them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Review the register after major index rebalancing, platform-interface changes or account-data changes. The index definition and the list of associated products can change over time, while your alert settings may remain unchanged. A monthly check of symbols, permissions and expirations is a simple way to prevent silent failures.
