What you can change on your main Pawn
Your main Pawn has several independent settings. A Pawn Quest determines what the Pawn asks another Arisen to do and what reward you will provide. Inclination influences the Pawn’s general behavior. Equipment determines the weapons, armor, and clothing the Pawn can use in its current vocation. Vocation, skills, and other changes are separate settings, but they are all included in the Pawn information that is shared with other players after an online inn rest.

The fastest way to avoid mistakes is to treat the setup as five checks:
Recommended Free Tools
- Quest: Configure it at a Riftstone and fund the reward before confirming.
- Inclination: Apply the desired Rift Incense while camping, or use Art of Metamorphosis.
- Equipment: Select the main Pawn in the Equipment or Items menu, move gear into the Pawn’s inventory if needed, and equip vocation-compatible items.
- Inventory behavior: Check whether Hawker or Logistician specialization may be moving, selling, or supplying items automatically.
- Publication: Rest at an inn while online after the final change.
Exact menu names and controller buttons can differ by platform, language, or custom key bindings. The underlying steps remain the same.

How to set a Pawn Quest at a Riftstone
Capcom’s manual gives the essential instruction: “To set a pawn quest, simply access a riftstone.” The Riftstone is where you select the objective for your main Pawn and choose its reward.
Step-by-step setup
- Find and access a Riftstone. Interact with it using the normal action prompt.
- Open the Pawn Quest setting for your main Pawn. The available objective choices are shown in the Riftstone interface.
- Select the objective. The quest can ask the hired Pawn to accomplish a task while traveling beyond the Rift with another player. Item retrieval can also be selected when you want another Arisen to obtain a particular item for you.
- Choose the reward type. Capcom’s manual says the reward can be a specific item or a sum of gold.
- Confirm only after checking the cost. A selected item is removed from your inventory when the quest is configured. A gold reward is deducted from your funds. Do not promise an item you still need or cannot replace.
- Leave the Riftstone and continue playing. The Pawn Quest is now active until it is completed or otherwise ends.
How Pawn Quests work for both players
Your main Pawn can complete a quest while traveling with another player’s party beyond the Rift. Pawn Quests are also a way to request an item from another Arisen: make item retrieval the objective and provide the reward you are prepared to spend. The same system gives Pawns opportunities to obtain items and acquire Pawn Badges.
Choosing a reward that attracts help without wasting resources
A useful reward is a balance between appeal and replacement cost. A rare item may make the quest more attractive, but it is consumed as soon as you configure the quest, not when another player eventually completes it. Gold avoids giving away a specific item, but it still reduces your funds when the quest is set. Before confirming, ask:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Can I spare this item immediately?
- Would a gold reward leave enough money for repairs, travel, and purchases?
- Does the objective clearly tell another player what to do?
- Will the reward still be useful if the quest takes time to complete?
Resetting or replacing a completed quest
When the Pawn Quest ends, inspect the Pawn’s returned status and then visit another Riftstone to configure a new objective and reward. A new quest does not restore an item that was already consumed as a reward; treat each configuration as a fresh expenditure.
How to change your main Pawn’s inclination
Capcom’s FAQ, updated October 12, 2026, documents two supported methods for changing the main Pawn’s inclination: use the appropriate Rift Incense while camping, or use an Art of Metamorphosis. The FAQ states that Art of Metamorphosis can be obtained in-game at the Pawn Guild.
Method 1: Rift Incense at a campsite
- Obtain the Rift Incense that matches the inclination you want.
- Set up a campsite with your camping kit.
- While camping, talk to your main Pawn.
- Use the incense from the camping interaction. The incense must be in the relevant inventory for the interaction to work.
- Finish the camp sequence and allow the change to apply before leaving.
This method is designed for changing the main Pawn during normal travel. If the expected dialogue or item-use option does not appear, verify that you are speaking to the main Pawn, that the matching incense is available, and that you are actually in a campsite interaction rather than merely standing near a camp kit.
Method 2: Art of Metamorphosis
- Obtain Art of Metamorphosis at the Pawn Guild. Capcom identifies the Pawn Guild as an in-game source.
- Use the item through the appropriate character-customization interaction.
- Select the desired inclination and confirm the change.
Art of Metamorphosis is the alternative when you do not want to wait for a campsite interaction or when you prefer a direct customization route. The official FAQ does not publish a universal inclination ranking, so the right choice depends on your Pawn’s vocation, the role your party lacks, and how much independent behavior you want.

Choosing an inclination by role rather than by a universal tier list
Inclination should support the job you expect the Pawn to perform. A support-oriented Pawn may need behavior that keeps it attentive to party needs; an offensive Pawn may benefit from behavior that encourages engagement with threats; an explorer or utility Pawn may need to act more independently around the environment. The official material does not establish one best inclination for every vocation or party.
| Decision axis | Question to ask | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Role fit | What function is missing from the party? | Choose an inclination that reinforces the Pawn’s vocation instead of duplicating a role already covered. |
| Control versus autonomy | Do you want close obedience to commands or more independent action? | Use the inclination and command behavior that matches how actively you direct the Pawn. |
| Travel behavior | Should the Pawn notice nearby opportunities? | Remember that commands can prompt interaction with treasure chests, mechanisms, and gathering spots while exploring. |
| Combat behavior | Should the Pawn hold position or spread out? | Capcom’s command manual explains that a combat command can direct Pawns to spread out across the battlefield. |
Commands and inclination are not the same setting
Changing inclination does not replace issuing commands. The official command manual describes direct commands that alter what Pawns do: during combat, a command can direct them to spread out across the battlefield; while exploring, commands can prompt interaction with nearby chests, mechanisms, and gathering spots. Use commands for immediate tactical control and inclination for the Pawn’s broader behavior.
How to equip weapons, armor, and clothing on the Pawn
Equipment is managed from the Pause menu’s Equipment or Items interface. You must switch the managed character to your main Pawn, and the item must either already be in the Pawn’s inventory or be transferred there first.
Step-by-step equipment procedure
- Open the Pause menu. Enter the Equipment or Items screen used by your platform.
- Select your main Pawn as the character being managed. If the Arisen remains selected, the equip action will affect the wrong character.
- Check the Pawn’s current vocation. Weapon and armor availability is filtered by vocation compatibility.
- Locate the item. If the weapon, armor, or clothing is in the Arisen’s inventory, transfer it to the Pawn first.
- Select the item and choose Equip. Button labels vary with platform and remapping, but the interface will show the applicable action.
- Review the resulting loadout. Confirm that the intended weapon, armor pieces, and clothing occupy the Pawn’s slots and that the item was not left in the Arisen’s inventory.
Why the Equip option can be unavailable
The two most common causes are an incompatible item and the item being stored on the wrong character. A weapon class that the Pawn’s current vocation cannot use will not be available to equip. Likewise, selecting the Pawn while the gear remains in the Arisen’s inventory can prevent the expected equip action. Transfer the item first, then return to the Pawn’s equipment screen.
Equipment checks before you confirm
- Is the item a weapon or armor type permitted by the current vocation?
- Is the item physically in the Pawn’s inventory rather than the Arisen’s?
- Are you editing the main Pawn, not a hired Pawn?
- Did the change actually appear in the Pawn’s visible equipment slots?
- Could a specialization later move or sell the item automatically?
Equipment legality is tied to the Pawn’s current vocation. If you change vocation later, revisit the loadout because a previously usable item may no longer be available to equip.
Why a Pawn’s items or equipment can change unexpectedly
Not every inventory change is a menu mistake. Capcom’s FAQ documents automatic behaviors associated with two specializations.
Hawker
A Pawn with the Hawker specialization may automatically receive items or equipment from the Arisen and may sell low-rarity items to reduce carried weight. If equipment or consumables appear to move without a deliberate transfer, check whether the Pawn has this specialization before assuming the game lost the item.

- The deep, explorable fantasy world of Dragon's Dogma... Dragon's Dogma is a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG that challenges players to shape their own experience—from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, and their party, to how they approach various situations and much more.
Logistician
A Pawn with the Logistician specialization may also automatically receive items or equipment from the Arisen and may sell low-rarity items to reduce carried weight. This can be useful for reducing encumbrance, but it means you should not leave valuable low-rarity gear in an inventory you expect to remain unchanged.
Forfeited Pawns
When a Pawn becomes forfeit, items that Pawn held are automatically sent to item storage, according to Capcom’s FAQ. Check storage before concluding that the gear has disappeared. This behavior is different from Hawker or Logistician selling: forfeiture sends the held items to storage rather than removing them through a sale.
How to make other players see the updated Pawn
Local changes are not automatically visible to every player at once. After changing the Pawn Quest, inclination, equipment, vocation, skills, or another Pawn setting, rest at an inn while connected to the network.
- Finish all desired edits. Confirm the quest reward, inclination, and equipment first so you do not publish an intermediate setup.
- Verify that the game is connected online. An offline inn rest cannot upload the current Pawn data to the network.
- Rest at an inn. This uploads the Pawn’s information so other players can hire the current version.
- Allow time for the update to propagate. Capcom warns that reflection may take some time; an immediate check by another player may still show the previous version.
If another player still sees old equipment or an old quest, repeat the verification: check that the final change was saved, confirm the online connection, rest at an inn again, and wait for the network update rather than changing the Pawn repeatedly during the propagation period.
A complete setup workflow for a hire-ready Pawn
Use this order when preparing a Pawn for other players. It minimizes the chance of publishing a quest that promises an item you later equip or sell.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Decide the party role. Identify the function your Pawn should provide and choose a vocation that can perform it.
- Set the inclination. Apply the matching Rift Incense at a campsite or use Art of Metamorphosis from the Pawn Guild.
- Equip the Pawn. Transfer compatible gear into the Pawn’s inventory and equip it from the Equipment or Items menu.
- Check automatic inventory behavior. If Hawker or Logistician is active, account for possible transfers or low-rarity sales.
- Configure the Pawn Quest. At a Riftstone, select the objective and then select an affordable item or gold reward.
- Inspect the final state. Confirm the vocation, inclination, visible equipment, quest objective, and reward.
- Rest at an inn online. This is the publication step for other players.
Recommended final checklist
- Quest objective is the one you intend to offer.
- Reward is available and affordable after configuration.
- Inclination was changed through campsite incense or Art of Metamorphosis.
- Weapons and armor are compatible with the current vocation.
- Gear was transferred to the Pawn before attempting to equip it.
- Specialization-related inventory behavior has been considered.
- Inn rest occurred while connected to the network.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The Pawn Quest option is not configured as expected. | The quest was not set through a Riftstone, or the previous quest has ended. | Access a Riftstone, choose the objective, select the reward, and confirm the cost. |
| The item reward is missing from your inventory. | Quest rewards are removed when the quest is configured. | Review the active quest and remember that the item was consumed at setup. |
| The inclination does not change. | Wrong incense, no campsite interaction, wrong Pawn, or an uncompleted item-use step. | Use the matching Rift Incense while camping and speak to the main Pawn, or use Art of Metamorphosis. |
| Equip is unavailable. | The item is in the Arisen’s inventory or is illegal for the Pawn’s vocation. | Transfer the item, select the main Pawn, and choose gear allowed by the current vocation. |
| Items keep moving or low-rarity gear disappears. | Hawker or Logistician may be transferring or selling items. | Check the Pawn’s specialization and protect items you do not want automatically handled. |
| Forfeited Pawn gear is not in the inventory. | Held items were sent to storage. | Check item storage. |
| Another player sees an older Pawn. | The latest data has not been uploaded or reflected yet. | Rest at an online inn after all edits and allow time for the update to appear. |
How to choose between competing Pawn setups
When deciding between two possible configurations, compare them on the same five axes rather than relying on a universal tier list.
Role fit
Ask whether the inclination, vocation, and equipment cover a missing party function. A strong item on the wrong vocation is not a usable upgrade, and an inclination that conflicts with the role can make the Pawn less useful than a lower-stat but better-aligned setup.

Control versus autonomy
Decide how often you want to issue commands. Direct commands handle immediate situations, such as spreading Pawns across a battlefield or prompting interaction with a nearby chest, mechanism, or gathering spot. Inclination determines the broader behavioral preference between those commands.
Quest economics
Compare the reward’s likely appeal with its immediate cost. An item reward is removed from your inventory when configured; a gold reward is deducted from your funds. Set a reward you can replace without compromising your own progression.

Equipment legality and upkeep
Every weapon and armor piece must be legal for the Pawn’s current vocation. Also account for Hawker or Logistician behavior, which can alter carried items or sell low-rarity gear.
Online visibility
A carefully tuned Pawn still needs an online inn rest before other players can hire the current version. Because reflection may be delayed, judge visibility only after allowing time for the network update.
What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
Capcom’s current guidance clearly establishes the mechanics: Riftstones configure Pawn Quests; campsite Rift Incense and Art of Metamorphosis change the main Pawn’s inclination; vocation compatibility governs equipment; certain specializations can alter inventories; forfeited Pawn items go to storage; and an online inn rest uploads the Pawn data.
It does not publish a complete, current ranking that makes one inclination universally best, nor does it provide a quantitative study showing that one reward value or equipment combination guarantees more hires. Treat recommendations as role- and play-style decisions, and describe any reward as a cost you are choosing to pay rather than as a guaranteed way to increase hiring.
