How to Set Parental Controls on an iPhone or iPad for a Child

The most reliable way to manage a child’s iPhone or iPad is to use Family Sharing with the child’s own Apple Account, then configure Screen Time on the child’s profile. In Content & Privacy Restrictions, you can control purchases, app installation, age-rated content, websites, privacy changes and device features. Screen Time also provides time limits and communication tools.

Apple changes menu names and feature availability by iOS or iPadOS version, the child’s age and your country or region. Update family devices first, and use the labels shown on your current software rather than assuming every option appears on every device.

What you need before you start

Prepare the accounts and devices before changing restrictions. The parent or guardian should have an Apple device signed in with an Apple Account, and the child should use a separate Apple Account in the family group. Family Sharing is Apple’s normal route for parent-managed controls because it lets a parent manage the child’s Screen Time and approve eligible requests from the family group.

  • A parent or guardian Apple device: Keep it updated and signed in to the account that will manage the family.
  • The child’s Apple Account: Add the account to Family Sharing instead of sharing the adult’s account. Shared accounts make it difficult to apply age, purchase and communication settings to one child.
  • Current software: Apple says updating devices across the family helps settings sync. Exact controls can require different iOS or iPadOS releases.
  • A Screen Time passcode: Choose a code the child cannot guess and do not reuse the device unlock code.

Apple’s support pages describe controls for children using iPhones and iPads. Some defaults are imposed by local law or by the child’s age, and some options may not be available in every country, region or Apple service.

Set up Family Sharing and add the child

  1. On the parent or guardian’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings and open Family (older software may label this Family Sharing).
  2. Follow the prompts to create or review the family group.
  3. Choose the option to add a family member, then add the child’s Apple Account. If the child does not have an account, use Apple’s child-account setup flow shown on your device.
  4. Confirm which adult is the parent or guardian who can approve requests. Apple allows a parent or guardian in the family group to handle eligible purchase and Screen Time approvals.
  5. Repeat the account and software check on the child’s iPhone or iPad. Restarting both devices after a major update can help them display the same family information.

The exact buttons can move as Apple updates iOS and iPadOS. If you cannot see Family or the child’s name, first verify that both devices are signed in to the intended Apple Accounts and that the child has accepted any family invitation.

Open the child’s Screen Time controls

  1. On the child’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. Under Family, select the child’s name. On a parent’s device, the family section may show the child directly; on the child’s device, the account and menu arrangement can differ by release.
  4. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  5. Enter the Screen Time passcode if prompted, then turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Turning this switch off pauses the controls configured inside that section; it does not permanently erase every choice. Turn it back on when you want those restrictions enforced again. For a detailed Apple walkthrough, see Use parental controls to manage your child’s iPhone or iPad.

Choose restrictions by the risk or behavior you want to manage

Do not turn on every restriction automatically. Start with the child’s age, the apps and services they actually use, and the decisions you want them to make independently. Then revisit the settings as those circumstances change.

Purchases, downloads and deletions

Content & Privacy Restrictions can prevent installing apps, deleting apps or making in-app purchases. These controls are useful even when the child has a payment method available through the family group.

For eligible purchases and downloads, enable Ask to Buy. Apple’s current route is Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Ask to Buy. Another Apple page places related choices under Apps & Websites > Restrictions, so the wording on your device may differ. Apple documents this feature at Approve what kids buy and download with Ask to Buy.

Ask to Buy is not a universal guarantee that every transaction needs approval. Defaults and availability depend on the child’s age, account status and local rules. Check the child’s profile after changing age-related settings.

Built-in Apple apps and features

Use the built-in-app controls to restrict features that are unsuitable for the child. When you turn off a built-in app or feature, Apple says it is temporarily hidden rather than deleted. Turning it on later restores access and its existing data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply this selectively. Hiding a feature can affect schoolwork, accessibility tools or family communication, so confirm what the child needs before disabling it.

Movies, television, books, music and app ratings

Content restrictions can block explicit music and other media and limit age-rated movies, television, books, apps and related services. Rating systems and catalog availability vary by country or region and by service, so select the rating system shown in your device’s settings rather than converting a rating from another country.

Ratings are labels, not a promise that every item with the same rating has identical themes. For younger children, combine ratings with supervised use and conversations about what to do when an app or video is unsettling.

Web access

Screen Time can restrict inappropriate web content. Depending on the software and account, Apple may also show Ask to Browse, which lets a child request access to a website for a parent’s approval. Apple describes this as a supported-version feature, not a setting available on every iPhone, iPad or region.

Game Center and online play

Content & Privacy Restrictions includes Game Center controls. Use the options displayed on your device to manage multiplayer activity and related features that the child’s account can access. The available switches can vary by operating-system version and region.

Privacy and other device settings

You can prevent changes to privacy settings and other device settings. This can stop a child from changing which apps access information such as location, contacts or photos, or from altering account-related controls you want to supervise.

Review these settings after installing a new app. A restriction that blocks all changes may also prevent a legitimate school or accessibility app from receiving the permission it needs; make the change yourself when required rather than leaving the setting broadly open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time limits and downtime

Screen Time provides time controls, including limits for selected apps or categories and periods when device use is restricted. Build limits around sleep, school and family routines instead of treating one number as suitable for every child. Emergency and family-contact needs should be considered before applying a broad downtime schedule.

When a limit is reached, Apple may let the child request more time. That request can be approved or declined by a parent according to the family’s setup.

Communication Limits

Communication Limits lets you manage who the child can communicate with during permitted use and, where supported, during downtime. Configure it for the child’s actual communication apps and contacts; a restriction that covers only Apple’s own services may not govern every third-party service.

Communication Safety

Communication Safety can help protect children from sharing or receiving sensitive photos and videos. Apple presents it as a safety aid, not complete prevention or detection of every harmful image. Discuss what the child should do if they receive an alarming message, and make sure they know how to contact a trusted adult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s Screen Time overview explains time, communication and safety features in Use Screen Time to manage your child’s iPhone or iPad.

How approval requests work

A child can generate a request in several situations: after reaching a Screen Time limit, when asking for an eligible purchase or download, when requesting a website through Ask to Browse, or when requesting permission to communicate with a new contact in a supported app.

  1. Review the request notification in Messages or on the child’s device, depending on the feature and family setup.
  2. Check what the request covers: a specific app, a purchase, extra time, a website or a contact.
  3. Approve or decline it. If you approve extra time or access, the permission applies to the request shown rather than silently removing every related restriction.
  4. If another adult is designated as a parent or guardian in the family group, that person can approve eligible requests as well.

Apple’s child-safety guide describes these approval flows at Approve your child’s purchases, downloads, and Screen Time requests.

Parent-managed Family Sharing or on-device setup?

Family Sharing is the preferred route when an adult has an Apple device and wants to manage the child’s settings centrally. Apple also describes an alternative in which some children aged 13–17 set up Screen Time on their own device when the parent does not have Family Sharing or an Apple device. Eligibility and available controls depend on age and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation Best starting point What to verify
Parent has an Apple device and the child has an Apple Account Family Sharing, then the child’s Screen Time profile Both accounts are in the same family; the parent or guardian is designated for approvals
Parent lacks Family Sharing or an Apple device; child is 13–17 Supported on-device Screen Time setup Age, country or region and the software version permit this route
Child’s name or controls are missing Check account, invitation and software status before changing settings Devices are updated and signed in to the intended Apple Accounts

These are not interchangeable in every country. If Apple presents a different setup path, follow the current prompts for the child’s account rather than forcing the Family Sharing steps.

Version, age and regional differences

Apple’s pages use several generations of labels and flows. Some current materials describe controls in iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 or later, while one guide specifies software version 27 or later for a set of newer family-request features. That does not mean every parental control requires version 27. Treat the minimum version as feature-specific.

  • Update before configuring: Apple says current software across family devices helps settings synchronize.
  • Read the label on your screen: “Family,” “Family Sharing,” “Apps & Websites,” “Restrictions” and “Content & Privacy Restrictions” can appear in different combinations.
  • Check the child’s age: Some controls and defaults change as the account moves between child and teen age bands.
  • Check your location: Country or regional rules can enable a default, change a rating system or prevent a setting from being turned off.
  • Do not assume a missing option is an error: Ask to Buy, Ask to Browse and other request features may require a supported version, account type or region.

For Apple’s iPhone-specific Family Sharing instructions, see Set up parental controls with Family Sharing on iPhone.

Troubleshoot the common setup problems

The child does not appear under Family

  • Confirm the child is using their own Apple Account and that the account has joined the family group.
  • Check for a pending invitation or consent step on the child’s device.
  • Install available iOS or iPadOS updates on the parent and child devices.
  • Sign out of neither account impulsively; first verify the account names in Settings so you do not detach the child from the family group.

The Screen Time menu looks different

Apple changes labels between releases. Look for Screen Time, the child’s name under Family, and either Content & Privacy Restrictions or a nearby restrictions menu. Use Apple’s current support page for your region and the exact software version installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A restriction stopped working

Open the child’s Screen Time profile and check whether Content & Privacy Restrictions is still on. Apple says all controls inside that section pause when the main switch is turned off. Also check whether the child is using another Apple Account or a service that is outside the particular restriction you configured.

Ask to Buy or Ask to Browse is absent

Verify the child’s age, country or region, account status and software version. Ask to Buy has age- and region-dependent defaults, while Ask to Browse is supported only on certain versions and accounts. Updating every family device can resolve a version mismatch, but it cannot make an unavailable regional feature appear.

A legitimate app or website is blocked

Review the specific app, rating, web-content or privacy rule that caused the block. Approve the individual request when that option is available, or adjust the narrowest setting needed rather than disabling all restrictions. After changing it, test the app or site on the child’s device.

A practical first-day checklist

  • Family Sharing is active, and the child’s own Apple Account is a family member.
  • Parent and child devices are updated to the versions that support the features you intend to use.
  • Screen Time is open for the correct child profile.
  • A Screen Time passcode is set and kept private.
  • App installation, deletion and in-app purchases match your household rules.
  • Ask to Buy is enabled if you want approval for eligible purchases and downloads.
  • Age ratings, explicit content and web access reflect the child’s age and your region.
  • Built-in apps, Game Center and privacy-setting changes have been reviewed individually.
  • Time limits, communication limits and Communication Safety are configured for the child’s actual routines and contacts.
  • You have tested one allowed app, one restricted action and one approval request so you know which device receives the notification.

Recheck the profile after major operating-system updates, when the child changes age bands, or when they begin using a new app or communication service. Parental controls work best as a changing configuration plus an explanation of the family’s rules, not as a one-time switch.
