There is no universal master switch: a game can add its own communication features, split chat into several channels, or apply age-based limits that differ from the device settings.
Use a two-layer setup: game first, platform second
Start with the account controls for the specific game. Look for separate switches for voice chat, public or game text chat, direct messages, party chat, friend chat, and quick communication features. After saving those settings, open the family-safety controls for the console, computer, or network account. A platform restriction can limit multiplayer, friends, clubs, or messaging, but it may not control a chat system that a game creator built independently.

Make the change while signed in to the child’s account or the linked parent account, not only on the parent’s profile. Then test from the child’s device with a second account, if available. Check both what the child can send and what the child can receive; some menus use one permission for both directions, while others distinguish the audience.

What each communication channel means
- Game or experience chat: Voice or text from players in the same match, island, server, or game experience.
- Party chat: A private or semi-private group that can continue across matches and, in some services, across different games.
- Direct messages and group chats: One-to-one or persistent text conversations that may be available outside a live match.
- Friend, team, or connection chat: A restricted audience that may include more people than the child’s accepted friends, depending on the service.
- Quick phrases or gameplay coordination: Preset messages that can have their own on/off control even when free-form text is blocked.
A voice toggle does not necessarily disable text, DMs, party chat, or a creator-added communication tool. Treat every channel listed in the game’s communication menu as a separate decision.

A practical setup procedure
- Confirm the child account and age. Check the date of birth, account type, and whether a parent account is linked. Age thresholds in individual services can change which choices are available.
- Open the game’s parental or communication settings. Record the current choices before changing them so you can identify which control solved a problem or caused an unintended restriction.
- Set voice permissions. Choose the narrowest audience that fits your family: everyone, friends or team members, friends only, or nobody/off. If there are separate party and game-chat entries, set both.
- Set text permissions. Review public text, direct messages, group chats, friend chat, and any preset-message feature independently. Turn off channels the child does not need.
- Review reporting and privacy options. Communication controls determine who can talk; reporting, recording, filtering, and retention settings determine how conversations are moderated or stored. Enabling reporting is not the same as limiting the audience.
- Apply the platform family settings. Use the console or network’s family group to restrict multiplayer, adding friends, clubs, and chat where those controls exist.
- Check other devices and linked apps. A game account may be usable on a console, computer, phone, or another supported app. Make sure the same child account is protected everywhere.
- Test the result. Have the child join a match, a party, and a direct-message screen. Confirm that blocked channels cannot send or receive messages, and that permitted friends can still use the intended channel.
- Recheck after updates or account changes. Interfaces, labels, age classifications, and available audiences are service-specific and can change. Review controls whenever the game updates, the child’s account age category changes, or a new device is connected.
Roblox: separate experience chat, direct chat, and friend controls
Roblox requires a linked parent account to manage a child’s parental controls. From the parent account, open Settings > Parental controls > select your child’s account > Settings you manage > Communication. Review each item rather than assuming one switch controls every conversation.
Communication choices in Roblox
- Experience chat: The parent overview provides an On or Off choice for chat inside an experience.
- Direct chat: This is a separate On or Off setting for direct conversations.
- Chat and party with friends: Friend communication can be limited to all friends, trusted friends, or no one. Some choices require an age check.
- Gameplay coordination: Roblox’s Quick Words feature, which uses short preset phrases, has its own On or Off setting.
Roblox states that users under 9 need parental consent to enable experience chat, and users under 13 need consent to enable direct chat. These are Roblox service rules, not universal legal age standards. If an option is unavailable, complete any requested age check or parental-consent step rather than trying to change the setting from the child profile.
The Roblox limitation parents often miss
Roblox says its experience-chat and direct-chat controls do not apply to chat features that an individual experience creator added independently. A game can therefore expose a separate communication system with its own settings. After changing the Roblox account controls, open the specific experience’s menu and look for additional voice, text, party, or messaging permissions.
Roblox also says that players aged 12 and younger have posts and chats filtered for inappropriate content and to help prevent personal information from being posted. Filtering is a safety layer, not a replacement for choosing who can contact the child. If the goal is no contact, turn off the relevant communication channels and inspect creator-added features as well.

Epic Games and Fortnite: party chat and game chat are different
Epic parental controls can be managed in the Epic Account Portal, and some settings can also be changed in Fortnite. Epic recommends checking platform-level social settings in addition to the Epic account. In Fortnite, open the profile icon > Settings > Communication menu.
Choose an audience for voice and text
Epic’s communication choices are Everybody, Friends/team members/connections, Friends Only, and Nobody; Fortnite labels the corresponding disabled choice Off. Set voice and text separately. A child may be allowed to hear teammates while text messages remain blocked, or vice versa, depending on the choices made.
Epic applies age-based caps to these settings. For an account identified as under 10, the maximum voice and text permission is Friends Only. For an account identified as under 13, the maximum is Friends, team members, and connections. These limits describe Epic’s service configuration at the time documented here; they are not universal age rules and can change with the service.

- Party chat: Communication among players in the party across supported Epic apps.
- Game chat: Communication with players in the same island instance, when that island supports game chat.
Because the channels are distinct, set both if the child should not communicate with strangers. Fortnite text DMs and group chats sync across Fortnite and supported Epic apps, so consider every supported app where the account can be used rather than checking only the console screen.

Reporting is not an audience restriction
Epic says voice reporting is always on for players under 18 when voice chat is on, and text reporting is always on for conversations that include players under 18. This provides a moderation and reporting mechanism; it does not stop other players from reaching the child. Epic says submitted voice clips are automatically deleted after 14 days or after the duration of a sanction, whichever is longer. Parents who want less contact should lower or disable chat permissions in the Epic portal as well as reviewing reporting information.
Fortnite’s Party Joinability is Invite Only by default for players who indicate they are under 18. Verify that setting after changing communication permissions, especially if the child uses parties with classmates or relatives.
Xbox: apply the family-group privacy and online controls
Xbox child privacy and online settings are managed through the Xbox Family Settings app or the Microsoft family account. Xbox says only a parent using the family-group feature can change privacy and online settings for a child account.
Available controls include whether the child can join multiplayer games, create or join clubs, add friends, and chat. Use these restrictions as the platform layer after configuring the game. The exact labels can vary by device and service version, so open the child’s account on the device being used and confirm the saved choice there.

A reliable Xbox check
- Open the Xbox Family Settings app or the Microsoft family account as the parent.
- Select the child in the family group.
- Review multiplayer participation, friend adding, clubs, and communication permissions.
- Save the settings, then sign out and back in on the child’s Xbox profile if the device does not immediately reflect the change.
- Return to the game and inspect its own voice, text, party, and direct-message controls; Xbox settings do not guarantee control over every game-created channel.
PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and other platforms
Parental decisions about communication restrictions also arise across PlayStation Network, Steam, and Xbox Network, as discussed in the OECD’s 2025 comparative report on age-assurance practices for online services used by children. The exact current menu paths for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Steam are not established in the official setup material covered here, and labels can differ by device, region, and account type.
For those platforms, open the current official family-safety instructions for the device or network, then separately inspect the game’s account controls. Look specifically for multiplayer access, friend requests, messaging, voice communication, club or group participation, and purchase or account-age restrictions. Do not assume that a console’s communication setting covers a game’s own DMs, party system, browser-based chat, or a creator-added feature.
How to choose the right restriction

Audience names are not interchangeable. “Friends/team members/connections” can include people who are not accepted friends, while “trusted friends” may be a narrower, service-specific category. Read the explanatory text beside each option before saving.

The wrong account was changed
Confirm the gamertag or username on the child’s active profile. A parent can change settings on the parent profile without affecting the child, and a child may have more than one game or platform account.
Only one channel was disabled
Reopen the communication menu and check voice, public text, DMs, party chat, game chat, friend chat, and preset phrases individually. In Fortnite, party and game chat are separate. In Roblox, experience and direct chat are separate, and Quick Words has its own control.
A creator added its own chat feature
Roblox explicitly says account-level experience and direct-chat controls do not cover communication features independently added by an experience creator. Inspect the individual game or experience for another voice, text, or messaging menu.
The platform restriction was never applied to the child
Return to the family group, select the child account, and verify the saved value. Restart the game or sign out and back in if the old permission remains cached. Check every device where the account is signed in.

Epic caps maximum chat permissions for under-10 and under-13 accounts, while Roblox requires parental consent at specified ages for some chat functions. An option may be unavailable until an age check or consent step is completed. Treat these thresholds as service settings, not as a substitute for checking the account’s actual date of birth.
Messaging comes from an external or synchronized service
Fortnite DMs and group chats can sync across Fortnite and supported Epic apps. Check each supported app and any linked platform messaging service. A game restriction may not silence a conversation that is taking place in a separate application.
Reporting was mistaken for blocking
Reporting and voice-recording rules help a service investigate abuse, but they do not decide who may initiate contact. Lower the communication audience or turn chat off when contact itself is the concern.
A maintenance checklist for parents
- Review voice and text permissions independently.
- Check public game chat, party chat, DMs, group chats, friend chat, and preset communication.
- Confirm the child account’s age, parent link, and any required age check or consent.
- Apply the console or platform family settings after saving game-level changes.
- Inspect creator-added chat systems and linked or synchronized apps.
- Test receiving as well as sending, using a match, a party, and a direct-message screen.
- Explain to the child which channels are allowed and how to mute, block, and report a player.
- Revisit the settings after major updates, a new device, an account-age change, or a change in the child’s friend list.
The safest configuration is the narrowest audience that still supports the type of play your child actually needs. Keep game-level and platform-level controls aligned, and treat every new communication channel as a separate permission to review.
