To block mature-rated games, give your child a separate account, then set that account’s content restrictions on the platform or game store they use. PlayStation, Xbox, Microsoft-managed Windows games, and Steam each have separate controls; a Windows setting alone does not cover every PC launcher. Set game access first, then review screen time, purchases, and communication as separate controls.
Start with a separate child account
Create an individual child account for each child, enter the correct birthdate, and protect the parent or family-manager account with a password or PIN the child does not know. ESRB recommends individual accounts so a younger child does not inherit access intended for an older sibling. See ESRB’s parental-controls guidance and its Family Gaming Guide.

Choose the game restriction by the rating system and options shown in your region. ESRB ratings are U.S. examples; regional labels and available settings may differ. Rating filters and title-specific restrictions are not the same as controls for playtime, purchases, multiplayer, or communication.

How do I block M-rated games on my child’s PlayStation?
Set a restriction on PS5
- Make sure the child has a child account in your PlayStation family, and sign that account in on the console.
- On PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, open Parental Controls, choose a restriction level, and confirm. The presets include Child, Early Teens, Late Teens, Older, and No Restriction; individual settings can be customized.
These steps are documented in ESRB’s PS5 guide. Its examples show that a setting of 9 blocks games above E, while a setting of 11 permits E and E10+ and blocks T and above. Those are guide examples, not a universal age-to-rating formula; check the options and ratings used for your account’s region.

Use the app or web account management
In the PlayStation Family app, select the child and go to Settings > Parental Controls > Restriction Level. Sony also documents web management through Account Management and Family Management. The current routes and account requirements are on Sony’s parental-controls support page.
If the child requests access to a restricted game, the family manager or an appointed guardian can review the exception. If you change a restriction while the child is already playing, Sony says the child should sign out and back in for the change to take effect.

Keep PlayStation spending separate
Child purchases are paid from the family manager’s wallet. Sony says the child’s monthly spending limit defaults to zero; adjust that setting separately if you want to permit purchases.

Change restrictions on the console
- Open Settings > Privacy and online safety.
- Select the family member whose access you want to change.
- Open Content restrictions and adjust the available content settings.
Use Xbox Family Settings
- In the Xbox Family Settings app, select the child under Your Family.
- Choose Content Restrictions.
- Turn on Filter Inappropriate Content, then choose Allow Content Suitable for Age and confirm the child’s age.
ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guide illustrates an age setting of 11 that allows E and E10+ while blocking T and M. Treat this as an example in the cited rating context; Xbox notes that age-based settings can align with ESRB and other rating systems, and the options shown may vary by country and account.

The app also provides controls such as time limits and notifications. Configure multiplayer and communication permissions separately from the age filter; the Xbox and Microsoft guidance is available through ESRB’s Windows PC guide.
How do I block mature games on a Windows PC?
Windows does not provide one rating switch that automatically covers every game installed from every store. Microsoft Family Safety can manage Microsoft-account family members and app or game limits on connected Windows and Xbox devices, but Steam games have Steam’s own family controls. Other PC game stores may require their own settings.

Microsoft-managed games and Windows play
Add the child to your Microsoft family and manage the content restrictions through Microsoft family tools. ESRB’s Windows PC guide describes Microsoft-family controls, including allowing or blocking individual titles. Its detailed Windows instructions cover Windows 10, so menu labels may not match Windows 11.

Steam games
- Create or manage a Steam Family and add the child.
- Open Account Settings > Family Management > Manage.
- Expand the child’s entry, enable parental controls, and configure game access, Steam-feature access, and playtime.
Valve’s Steam Families User Guide & FAQ says Steam Families replaces Steam Family View. Steam-specific controls can include requests for more playtime or feature access and child purchase requests; these are not universal Windows capabilities.

Once the child account and game-access filter are set, check these controls independently. The labels and availability differ by platform.
- Playtime: Set limits or schedules where supported. A time limit does not block a mature title by rating.
- Purchases: Review wallet access, spending limits, and approval requests. Do not assume a game filter also prevents purchases.
- Communication and multiplayer: Decide whether the child can message, join voice chat, play online, or interact with other players.
- User-generated content and platform features: Review access to shared content and storefront or community features separately from game access.
- Exceptions: Know where requests appear and which adult account can approve them. PlayStation and Steam document request or approval mechanisms for their own services.
