How to Set Parental Controls for GTA 6’s Mature Content on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

The dependable way to block Grand Theft Auto VI’s mature content is to prevent the child account from launching an M-rated game. Create a properly dated child account in the console family group, set the content age below ESRB M, protect the parent PIN or password, and separately restrict purchases, play time, and communication. Rockstar has announced GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. The reviewed official information does not document an in-game switch that removes all sexual content, violence, nudity, language, or drug and alcohol references.

What GTA VI’s rating means for parents

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates Grand Theft Auto VI M for Mature 17+. Its rating summary lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The game also includes In-Game Purchases.

That rating describes the complete product, not an optional “mature mode.” A console can usually block an M-rated title for a child account, but the official material reviewed for GTA VI does not document a setting inside the game that removes every mature scene while leaving the rest playable. If your child must not access those themes, block the game at the family-account level rather than relying on an in-game menu.

Rockstar lists the launch platforms as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date. Controls therefore need to be configured on the relevant console family system. A purchase made by an adult account is not a substitute for those controls: the restriction belongs to the child account and the console’s family settings.

Set up the family account before installing the game

Use a real child account

Do not let a child play through a parent’s unrestricted account. Create a separate child account inside the console’s family-management system and enter the child’s correct birth date. The date of birth determines the default age level and affects which games, communication features, and online functions the account can use.

An incorrect birth date can make an age restriction too permissive and may be difficult to correct later. The account should identify the child who will actually use it, while the parent or guardian remains the family manager.

Protect the management credential

Choose a family-management passcode or parent password that the child cannot guess. Do not save it where the child can read it, and do not approve a request while signed in to the child’s profile. A rating block is effective only if the child cannot change the setting or switch to an unrestricted adult account.

Decide what “blocked” means in your household

  • Strict block: set the allowed game rating below M so GTA VI cannot start on the child account.
  • Purchase control: require parent approval for every purchase or set the account’s spending limit to zero.
  • Time control: use daily schedules and duration limits rather than relying on a child to stop voluntarily.
  • Communication control: restrict voice, text, multiplayer invitations, and other contact features appropriate to your child’s age.

These controls address different risks. A rating block governs access to the game; it does not automatically stop another account from buying it, extend the child’s play time, or prevent contact through a permitted online account.

PlayStation 5: block GTA VI with family management

PlayStation’s family-management controls let a family manager create a child account, apply an age level, and set spending, time, and communication limits. Menu wording can change with PS5 system software, so use the current Family Management or parental-control labels shown on your console.

1. Add the child to the family

  1. Sign in with the adult account that manages the family.
  2. Open the PS5 family-management controls and choose the option to add a child or family member.
  3. Create or link the child’s account and enter the correct birth date.
  4. Set a family-management passcode that is different from any code the child knows.

The account must remain a child account. If the child uses the adult account, the child inherits that account’s unrestricted permissions and the rating block will not protect access.

2. Set the game and content age level below M

  1. Open the child’s profile in Family Management.
  2. Open the controls for games, applications, or age-level content.
  3. Choose an allowed age level below the ESRB M rating, then save the change.
  4. Keep the setting locked with the family passcode.

ESRB’s PlayStation guidance explains that PS5 can block games by the child’s age. Its example says that for a 12-year-old, T, M, and AO games are blocked. Because GTA VI is rated M, an age level that blocks M titles should prevent the child account from launching it.

3. Set spending to require approval or disable it

  1. In the child’s family profile, open the spending or purchase controls.
  2. Set the console spending limit to zero, or require the family manager to approve purchases.
  3. Check that the child is not using a separate adult wallet or payment method.
  4. Review the purchase setting again after adding a payment method or changing family members.

GTA VI’s ESRB record includes In-Game Purchases. A spending limit applies to purchases made by the child account; it does not undo a purchase already made by an adult account.

4. Schedule play time

  1. Open the child’s screen-time or play-time controls.
  2. Choose the days and hours when the child may use the PS5.
  3. Set a daily duration if the console offers both a schedule and a time allowance.
  4. Save the schedule and test it while signed in as the child.

Use a schedule for boundaries such as bedtime and a duration limit for the total amount of play. Neither setting changes the game’s content rating.

5. Restrict communication and online play

  1. Open the child profile’s communication, multiplayer, or privacy controls.
  2. Restrict voice and text communication, friend requests, and contact from other players according to your family rules.
  3. Apply the setting to multiplayer and user-generated content where those options are available.
  4. Test the child account rather than the parent account to confirm the restriction is active.

Communication controls reduce contact with strangers but do not convert GTA VI into a child-rated game. Keep the game-rating block enabled if the goal is to prevent mature content entirely.

6. Verify the block before release day

With the child account selected, try to open an M-rated title or the GTA VI product page after the restriction is saved. The console should request an adult override or prevent access. Sign out afterward and confirm that the parent passcode is not visible in saved credentials. Recheck the exact labels after a PS5 system update.

Xbox Series X|S: block GTA VI through the Microsoft family group

Xbox uses a child account in a Microsoft family group. The current Xbox Family Settings flow provides controls for content ratings, purchases, screen time, communication, and multiplayer. Microsoft can change the names and location of these controls, so follow the labels currently shown in the family-management experience.

1. Create or add a child account

  1. Sign in with the adult Microsoft account that manages the family group.
  2. Add the child’s Microsoft account to the family, or create a child account when prompted.
  3. Enter the child’s correct birth date and confirm that the account is classified as a child.
  4. Keep the parent account’s password private and do not leave the family-management session open on the console.

If the child plays while signed in as the parent, Xbox content restrictions cannot reliably enforce the child’s limits.

2. Set content restrictions below ESRB M

  1. Open the child’s profile in the Xbox family or Family Settings controls.
  2. Open content restrictions for games and applications.
  3. Choose an allowed rating below M, then save the setting.
  4. Sign in as the child and verify that an M-rated game is blocked or asks for parent approval.

Since ESRB rates GTA VI M for Mature 17+, an Xbox account restricted below M should not be able to launch it. The block is account-based, so apply it to every child account that might use the console.

3. Require purchase approval or set a spending limit

  1. Open the child profile’s purchase or spending controls.
  2. Turn on approval for purchases, or set the available spending limit to zero.
  3. Review stored payment methods and remove any method the child could use without approval.
  4. Check the approval setting after family members, subscriptions, or payment methods change.

This prevents the child account from independently buying GTA VI, add-ons, or other in-game items. It does not remove purchases from an adult account’s library.

4. Configure screen-time schedules

  1. Open the child profile’s screen-time controls.
  2. Set permitted hours for each day.
  3. Set a daily duration if your family needs a total-time limit as well as a clock schedule.
  4. Save the limits and test them from the child account.

Use the schedule to block late-night sessions and the duration allowance to cap total daily play. These limits are separate from the M-rating restriction.

5. Restrict multiplayer and communication

  2. Choose whether the child can communicate by voice or text, receive invitations, join multiplayer sessions, or interact with people outside the approved family or friends list.
  3. Save the settings and test with the child account.

Communication controls govern contact with other players. They do not filter every mature scene in the game itself, so keep the content-rating block in place when GTA VI is not appropriate.

PS5 and Xbox controls compared

Control PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X|S
Account foundation Child account managed through the PS5 family-management controls Child account in a Microsoft family group
Rating block Set the child’s game/content age level below M; PS5 can block games by age Set game and application content restrictions below M
Purchases Use a console spending limit, including zero, or require family-manager approval Use purchase approval or a spending limit in the child profile
Screen time Configure play-time schedules and available duration Configure daily screen-time schedules and duration
Communication Restrict communication and multiplayer permissions in the child profile Restrict voice, text, multiplayer, and related privacy permissions
Credential protection Keep the family-management passcode private Keep the parent Microsoft account credentials private

Neither platform is established as universally safer by the available official material. The result depends on using a genuine child account, setting the rating below M, and preventing the child from changing the controls or using an unrestricted adult account.

What happens with a physical copy and digital purchases?

Rockstar’s support information says the physical version of GTA VI contains a digital download code rather than a disc. That format does not bypass family controls: the child still needs a console account with permission to redeem, install, and launch the game. Keep the code and purchase credentials under adult control, and do not redeem the code on the child’s account if the intention is to block access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A game bought by an adult account may remain visible in the console library. Visibility is not the same as permission to launch it. Test the child account after installation and confirm that the rating restriction produces an adult-approval prompt or blocks the title.

Why an in-game switch is not a sufficient solution

The official information reviewed for GTA VI does not document a setting that removes all mature scenes. That means you should not promise a child that violence, sexual content, nudity, strong language, or drug and alcohol references can be disabled individually. The reliable prevention method is to block the M-rated game at the account and console level.

Communication, spending, and time controls remain useful if an older teenager is permitted to play, but they solve different problems. A child can have purchases disabled and still see the game’s mature content; a child can have voice chat restricted and still encounter the single-player rating descriptors. Set the rating block first, then add the other controls that match your household rules.

Troubleshooting common failures

The child can still start GTA VI

  • Confirm the console is signed in to the child account, not the parent account.
  • Check that the child’s birth date and account type are correct.
  • Confirm the allowed rating is below M and that the change was saved.
  • Look for a second child or guest account that has weaker restrictions.
  • Sign out of the adult account and restart the console, then test again.

The child can buy content

  • Check the child profile’s spending limit and purchase-approval setting.
  • Remove payment methods the child can access.
  • Verify that the child is not using an adult wallet, family member’s account, or unrestricted store session.
  • Change the parent credential if the child may know it.

The child can communicate despite restrictions

  • Review voice, text, multiplayer, and friend-request permissions separately; one permission may not control all of them.
  • Test from the child account, because parent-account tests will not show the child’s restrictions.
  • Recheck settings after a console or family-group update.

The menu labels do not match these steps

Console manufacturers revise family-management screens. Use the current PS5 Family Management controls or Xbox Family Settings flow and look for the same functions: age-based game blocking, purchase approval or spending limits, screen-time scheduling, and communication restrictions. Do not weaken the rating setting simply because a label moved.
