Set up the child’s supervised console account before buying or launching Grand Theft Auto VI. On PS5, use PlayStation family controls or the PlayStation Family App. On Xbox Series X|S, use the Xbox Family Settings app or the console’s family settings. Set the child’s game-rating limit below the game’s M 17+ rating to block it, or use an adult-approval workflow if you plan to decide case by case. Also require purchase approval, set spending limits, review communication and privacy permissions, and test the child profile while the adult account is signed out.
What parents need to know before configuring the console
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation lists November 19, 2026 as the PS5 release date. Rockstar says the game can be pre-ordered for both consoles and that its physical edition contains a download code. The Xbox store lists the title for Xbox Series X|S and identifies in-game purchases.

The ESRB rates the game M for Mature 17+. Its listing names Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and In-Game Purchases. Those descriptors describe why an age filter matters, but a rating is a decision aid rather than a substitute for a family rule.

Controls belong to the child’s console account, not merely to the television or the adult profile. If a child plays through an unrestricted adult account, the console cannot reliably apply the child-specific rating, spending, communication, or time rules. Create or select a supervised child profile first, and use that profile every time the child plays.

Choose the rule you actually want
Block the game automatically
Set the child’s allowed game rating below M 17+. This is the clearest option when the child should not access the game. A rating block can also stop other games in the same mature category, so check the wider effect before saving it.
Require an adult decision
If you may permit the game later, use the platform’s family approval workflow instead of removing every restriction. Keep the child account supervised and require an adult decision for a title that exceeds the normal age setting. Do not treat a one-time approval as permission to use the adult account for future purchases or play.
Control money separately
Rating limits and purchase controls solve different problems. Turn on approval for purchases and set a spending limit so a child cannot buy the game, downloadable content, or in-game items without your decision. ESRB identifies rating blocks, play-time limits, and spending management as standard device parental-control uses.
Decide in advance whether your rule covers only the base game or also expansions, add-ons and virtual items. The Xbox listing flags in-game purchases, and the ESRB descriptor set includes them, so an age decision alone does not establish a spending policy.
How to set parental controls on PlayStation 5
1. Use a supervised child account
- Create or select the child’s supervised PlayStation account. Do not use the adult account as the child’s everyday profile.
- Confirm that the child signs in with that profile before opening the store or a game. If several children use the PS5, configure each child account separately because age, communication, time, and spending rules are account-specific.
2. Open PlayStation family controls
Open PlayStation family controls on the console or use the PlayStation Family App. Sony’s information for Grand Theft Auto VI specifically points parents to the Family App for age restrictions. Use the current app or help screen for your country: menu wording and the location of individual settings can change with software updates and regional rules.
3. Set the game-rating level
- Choose the child account in family controls.
- Open the game or content-age setting.
- Set the allowed level below the game’s M 17+ classification if the goal is an automatic block.
- If you intend to consider an exception, keep the account supervised and select the approval-based option offered by the current family-control flow rather than disabling age limits entirely.
The rating shown on a store page can differ by country. Use the classification displayed for your account and apply the household rule consistently; do not assume that a label from another region will appear identically on your PS5.

4. Require purchase approval and limit spending
- In the child account’s family settings, enable approval for purchases.
- Set a spending limit that matches your household policy.
- Check whether the setting covers both the initial game purchase and later in-game purchases.
This matters even when the game itself is blocked. A child may still browse, request, or attempt to buy other content, and the Xbox store listing identifies in-game purchases for the title. Keep approval enabled until you have checked the account from the child’s perspective.

Review the child account’s privacy and communication controls. Decide who can contact the child, whether the child can communicate with other players, and what information the account may share. Set play-time limits or schedules if your family uses them. These controls are independent of the game-rating block, so changing one does not automatically configure the others.
6. Test with the adult account signed out
- Sign out of the adult account and any other unrestricted profile.
- Sign in only to the child account.
- Open the PlayStation Store and attempt to view or obtain a game above the allowed rating.
- Attempt a purchase or an in-game purchase without adult approval.
- Check the communication and play-time behavior you selected.
The test should produce the restriction or approval request you expect. If the child can launch content freely, verify that the child is not using the adult profile and that the family settings were saved for the correct account.
How to set parental controls on Xbox Series X|S
1. Add the child to the Microsoft family group
- Add the child’s Microsoft account to the family group.
- Use the child profile for all game and store activity on the Xbox.
- Check that the adult account remains the organizer or parent account for approvals.
Do not rely on a console-wide rule while allowing the child to play through an adult profile. The family controls are designed to apply to the child member’s account.
2. Open Xbox Family Settings
Use the Xbox Family Settings app or the console’s family-settings area. The Xbox store provides parental-control information, while Microsoft’s current family tools expose age filters, purchase approval, privacy, communication, and screen-time options. Labels and menu order can vary by console software version and country, so follow the current wording shown for your account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Select the child in the family group.
- Open the content or game-rating control.
- Choose a permitted rating below M 17+ to block the title automatically.
- If you may make an exception, retain the family approval process and review any request from the child rather than removing the rating filter.
One Xbox listing currently displays “RATING PENDING LIKELY MATURE 17+,” while another regional listing shows the full M 17+ descriptor set. Check the store listing and age classification for your region before deciding how the filter should behave.

4. Require approval for purchases
- Turn on the setting that requires an adult’s approval for the child’s purchases.
- Review the spending control and set a limit appropriate for the child.
- Verify that the rule covers games, add-ons, and in-game purchases rather than only one category.
A mature-game block does not replace a spending rule. Keep both enabled so a child cannot obtain other restricted content or spend money inside an allowed game without your approval.
5. Review privacy, communication, and screen time
Use Xbox Family Settings to review who can communicate with the child, what privacy information is visible, and when the child may use the console. Set screen-time limits if they are part of your family agreement. Save each category and check that it is attached to the child’s profile, not the adult organizer.
6. Test from the child profile
- Sign out of the adult organizer account.
- Sign in only to the child’s Xbox profile.
- Try to view, download, or launch content above the permitted rating.
- Try a purchase without the adult account present.
- Check the communication and screen-time restrictions during the same test.
If the title remains accessible, first check the signed-in profile. Then reopen the child’s family settings and confirm that the rating level and approval requirement were saved. A pending approval should appear under the adult account rather than silently completing the transaction.

The two consoles provide the same broad control categories, but their menus are not identical. Follow the labels shown in the current app or console software instead of trying to reproduce a menu path from another platform.
Neither platform’s family controls should be treated as a television lock. They are account controls, so a second adult profile, an old account saved on the console, or an account used to redeem a download code can bypass the intended child settings. Remove unnecessary unrestricted profiles from the child’s play routine and repeat the test after any account change.
How to explain the M 17+ rating to a child
The ESRB description is unusually specific: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and In-Game Purchases. Explain which of those subjects your household rule covers and what the child should do if they encounter something uncomfortable or unexpected.

Sony notes that Grand Theft Auto games regularly feature profanities, violence, sexual themes, and depictions of illegal acts, and are generally not recommended for children. Use that guidance alongside the ESRB listing, your child’s maturity, and your family’s own standards. An age filter can prevent access, but it cannot replace supervision or a conversation about spending and communication.
Do not infer that a different regional label means the content has changed. Age classifications vary by country, and store displays can be updated independently. Check the current classification attached to the child’s account before approving an exception.
Purchase formats, editions, and release details
PlayStation lists a November 19, 2026 release for PS5. Rockstar’s support information describes pre-orders for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and says the physical version contains a download code. A disc or boxed product therefore does not make account-level controls unnecessary: configure the child profile before the code is redeemed or the game is launched.
Rockstar also describes Standard and Ultimate editions. Edition names, upgrade terms, prices, and availability can change, so check the current console store or retailer listing in your region before buying. A purchase approval rule should remain enabled whichever edition or purchase format you choose.
For a physical product, the code still becomes associated with an account when redeemed. Decide which supervised account should own any purchase before entering the code, and avoid redeeming it on the adult account if the child is expected to play under a restricted profile. The platform’s family settings remain relevant after redemption because they govern access, communication, time and later spending.

Troubleshooting when the block does not work
The child can launch the game
- Confirm the child is not using the adult account or a second unrestricted profile.
- Recheck that the rating limit was applied to the correct child account.
- Sign out all adult profiles and repeat the test.
- Review the current platform help flow if a software update changed the menu label.
The child can buy content without permission
- Verify that purchase approval is enabled for the child, not only for another family member.
- Check the spending limit and whether it applies to games, add-ons, and in-game purchases.
- Repeat the purchase test with the adult account signed out.
The store shows a different rating
- Check the regional store tied to the child’s account.
- Compare the current store display with the ESRB listing where ESRB applies.
- Do not copy a rating label from another country or an older screenshot.
Communication or time limits are not behaving as expected
- Open the child account’s privacy, communication, and play-time or screen-time categories separately.
- Save each change and test again from the child profile.
- Make sure the child is not switching to an adult profile after the test begins.
Final pre-launch checklist
- The child has a supervised account on the correct console.
- The allowed game rating is below M 17+ if the game must be blocked.
- An adult-approval workflow is retained if you may decide on an exception.
- Game, add-on, and in-game purchases require approval.
- Spending limits match the family’s budget.
- Privacy and communication settings have been reviewed.
- Play-time or screen-time limits are configured where needed.
- The current regional rating and store listing have been checked.
- The child profile has been tested while every adult account is signed out.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I block GTA 6 on my child’s PS5?
Use a supervised child PlayStation account, open PlayStation family controls or the PlayStation Family App, and set the permitted game-rating level below M 17+. Keep the adult account signed out and test the child profile by trying to view or launch content above that level. Also enable purchase approval so the child cannot buy the game or related content through another route.

How do I set Xbox parental controls before GTA 6?
Add the child’s Microsoft account to the family group, then use Xbox Family Settings or the console’s family-settings area. Set the allowed game rating below M 17+, require adult approval for purchases, review spending, privacy, communication and screen-time controls, and test with only the child profile signed in.
What age rating is GTA 6?
The ESRB lists Grand Theft Auto VI as M for Mature 17+. Descriptors are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and In-Game Purchases. Store labels can vary by country, so check the classification attached to your account.
Can I require permission before my child buys GTA 6?
Yes. Turn on purchase approval in the child account’s family settings and set a spending limit. Verify that the rule covers the initial game, add-ons and in-game purchases. Test the purchase flow while the adult account is signed out so an approval request, rather than an immediate transaction, is produced.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

They still apply. Rockstar says the physical edition contains a download code, and the code is redeemed to an account. Configure the supervised child account before redeeming or launching the game; a disc or boxed product does not override account-level rating, purchase, communication or time controls.
Are PS5 and Xbox parental-control menus identical?
No. Both platforms provide rating filters, purchase and spending controls, privacy, communication and time-management options, but menu names and locations can differ by software version and country. Follow the labels in the current PlayStation Family App, Xbox Family Settings app or console help flow.
What should I do if GTA 6 is still accessible after setting a block?
Check that the child is not using an adult or second unrestricted profile, confirm the rating level was saved for the correct child account, sign out every adult profile and repeat the test. If the store shows a different rating, check the regional account classification rather than copying an older screenshot or another country’s label.
When should I configure the controls?
Do it before purchase, code redemption or first launch. PlayStation currently lists November 19, 2026 for the PS5 release, while release information, regional ratings, edition names and store displays can change. Recheck the current platform listing and family-control screens when you buy.
The Bottom Line
Configure the supervised child account first, keep its rating limit below M 17+ to block Grand Theft Auto VI, and add purchase approval, spending, privacy, communication, and time controls. The final test must be performed from the child profile with the adult account signed out.
