Fortnite’s own parental-controls menu is the starting point for account, chat and time settings, but it is not a universal spending-limit switch. To stop V-Bucks or other purchases, use the payment controls for the child’s console, phone or tablet; on Windows PC, remove saved payment methods from the Epic Games account. Set up the Fortnite controls first, then secure the payment route your child actually uses.
What Fortnite’s parental controls can—and cannot—do
Fortnite has account-level controls for communication, content access and play time. Purchases are handled differently: Epic routes families to the payment and family settings of Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iPhone or iPad, and Android devices. For Epic purchases on a Windows PC, Epic recommends removing stored payment methods from the Epic Games account.

The six-digit Fortnite parental-controls PIN protects changes to Fortnite’s settings. Do not treat it as a universal approval code for a console or mobile app store. A child who knows a platform’s store credentials, or who can use a different payment route, may still be able to buy something unless that platform is restricted separately.

Before you begin
Identify the Epic account your child actually uses, the email address that will receive parent messages, and every device where that account can sign in. A child may move between a console, a phone, a tablet and a Windows PC, while each device uses a different store account or payment method. Fortnite’s account controls follow the Epic account, but payment restrictions follow the account that processes the transaction.

Have access to the parent-controlled email and the family-manager or adult account for each platform. Do not create the PIN from a number the child already knows, and do not reuse a console, phone or school-device PIN. If the account is missing a linked email, complete the account-upgrade route Epic provides for the console in use before expecting all parental-control options to appear.
Make a short inventory before changing settings: device, child account, store account, payment method and who can recover that account. This prevents the common mistake of securing a Fortnite profile while leaving an adult store account signed in on the same device.
Set up Fortnite’s parental controls
- Launch Fortnite on the account used by your child.
- Open the player menu. Select the player icon in the upper-right corner, then select the three-line menu icon.
- Choose Parental Controls. This appears in the right-hand column.
- Select Set Up Parental Controls. Confirm an email address that the parent or guardian controls. If the account has no linked email, Epic directs parents to account-upgrade instructions for the console in use.
- Create a six-digit PIN and confirm it. Epic requires this PIN when anyone tries to change the Fortnite controls later. Use a number that is different from other PINs you use, and do not share it with the child.
- Choose the controls you want. Set the communication, content and other options shown on screen. Select More Settings for additional choices available to the account.
Epic’s setup instructions specifically advise using a distinct, memorable PIN because it is required for future changes. If you forget it, use the parent email and the recovery process offered by Epic rather than guessing repeatedly.

After saving the settings, sign out and back in, or reopen the parental-controls screen, to confirm the choices were retained. The labels and available switches can differ by account age and region. If a setting is unavailable, verify the parent email first and check whether the account is cabined.
Stop purchases on the platform your child uses
There is no single Fortnite spending-limit workflow that applies everywhere. Identify the device and the payment account first. Then apply the platform’s current family or payment restrictions. Names and locations can change by operating-system version, country and account type, so use the platform instructions linked from Epic’s support page for the exact device.

Use the table as a routing decision, not as a promise that every platform exposes the same type of limit. Some systems can require an adult’s approval, while others mainly block a purchase method or remove a saved card. Read the current platform instructions for the child’s country and account type, then test the result without confirming a transaction.
Nintendo Switch
Open the Nintendo family or parental-control settings for the child’s Nintendo account and restrict purchases there. Check which Nintendo account is signed in to the eShop and which account holds the payment method. A restriction on one child profile does not automatically secure a different adult account on the same console.

Use PlayStation’s family-management and payment settings. Confirm that the child is using a child account and that purchases require the family manager’s approval or otherwise cannot use the stored payment method. Fortnite’s in-game parental PIN still controls Fortnite settings, but it does not replace PlayStation’s purchase controls.

Xbox
Apply Xbox family and payment restrictions to the child’s Microsoft account. Review the account that owns the payment method, not just the Fortnite profile. Xbox’s device-time controls and its purchase controls are separate, so configure both if you also want to limit when Fortnite can be played.
iPhone and iPad
Use Apple’s Screen Time and family payment settings for the Apple account signed in to the device. Check both purchase approval and whether in-app purchases are allowed. If the child can sign in with another Apple account, secure that account or remove its payment method as well.
Windows PC
For purchases processed through Epic Games on a Windows PC, open the Epic Games account and remove every stored payment method. This prevents a saved card or other method from being selected instantly. It is not a documented per-day or per-month Fortnite allowance, so families that need a hard budget should also use any bank, card or account-level spending alerts available to them.
Removing a saved method does not prevent every possible checkout route. Check for another stored card, a linked wallet or a different Epic account, and make sure the child cannot recover the adult account. If the PC is shared, sign out of the adult Epic and operating-system store accounts after making changes.
Android
Android purchase and family controls vary by manufacturer, Android version and the account handling the payment. Epic points families to device-specific controls and notes that Google Family Link works with most Android devices. Confirm whether the child is buying through Google Play, an Epic account or another route, and make sure the selected restriction governs that exact route.
Set Fortnite and UEFN time limits separately from purchase limits
Epic’s account-level time controls are independent of store-payment restrictions. They can limit total daily Fortnite use, define permitted time windows, and set separate allowances for playing and creating. The controls cover Fortnite and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) activity on the same Epic account.
What the two time categories mean
- Play Time covers Fortnite experiences.
- Create Time covers creating in Fortnite Creative, creating with UEFN, and playtesting unpublished UEFN islands.
- Permitted windows specify when use is allowed, in addition to any daily allowance.
- Extra-time requests can be enabled so a child can ask for more time instead of bypassing the limit.
Epic says the same-account limit follows the child across consoles and other devices. A child who reaches the allowance on one device cannot reset it simply by signing in on another device with the same Epic account. Device or console limits can be stricter still, because they operate independently of Epic’s account-level controls.
Where to configure time controls
Epic describes two routes: the Fortnite main menu and the Epic Account Portal on the web. In Fortnite, open the parental-controls area with the six-digit PIN. In the Account Portal, select the time-limit controls for the child’s account and set the daily amount, allowed windows, Play Time and Create Time values. The exact fields shown depend on the account and region.

Epic’s announcement about these controls was published October 1, 2024 and updated September 3, 2026. It says parents can opt in to daily time reports in the Account Portal. Reports help you see usage; they do not themselves block purchases.
When setting a schedule, consider both categories. A child can use the Play allowance for published Fortnite experiences and the Create allowance for Creative or UEFN work. If you want one overall household rule, set the device or console’s own limit as well; that independent limit may end access sooner than the Epic account setting.
Understand Cabined Accounts and age-based restrictions
Epic’s Privacy Policy, last updated April 22, 2026, describes a Cabined Account for a user younger than 13, or younger than the digital-consent age in that region when it is higher. The account can play Epic games, but voice chat and real-money purchases are disabled while it remains cabined.

A parent or guardian can complete Epic’s verification and consent process to enable additional features. The available options depend on the child’s age and region. Once parental controls are active, changes are protected by the PIN. A Cabined Account therefore provides a strong default purchase block, but families should still secure the console, mobile or PC payment account in case the child uses another account.
Do not assume that an age-based block means every account on the device is protected. Check the Epic account’s status and the store account separately. If a parent provides consent and enables additional features, revisit communication, purchase and time settings afterward rather than relying on the earlier cabined defaults.
A practical setup sequence for families
- List every device. Write down whether the child plays on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Windows PC, iPhone, iPad or Android, and note which account pays on each one.
- Set the Fortnite PIN. Complete the in-game path: player icon, three-line menu, Parental Controls, Set Up Parental Controls, parent email and six-digit PIN.
- Choose communication and content settings. Use More Settings to review the options available to the account.
- Configure time limits. Set daily Play Time, Create Time, permitted windows and extra-time requests in Fortnite or the Epic Account Portal.
- Lock each payment route. Apply the family and payment controls for every console or mobile platform. On Windows PC, remove stored payment methods from the Epic account.
- Test as the child. Sign in to the child profile and attempt the actions you intend to restrict, such as opening the store or sending a voice-chat request. Do not complete a purchase; verify that approval or a block appears.
- Secure account recovery. Keep the parent email, platform family-manager account and Fortnite PIN private. A child who can reset the parent account can undo otherwise correct settings.
Repeat the check after a major console, phone or Fortnite update, after changing the child’s Epic account, and whenever a new device is added. A purchase made through a newly added device can bypass a control that was configured only on the original console.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming the Fortnite PIN limits spending
Symptom: Fortnite settings are locked, but a purchase can still be initiated through a console or mobile store. Fix: Configure the platform’s payment controls or remove the saved Epic payment method on PC. Keep the Fortnite PIN for account settings.

Symptom: Purchases are blocked on a console but still possible on a phone or PC. Fix: Repeat the payment review for every device and every account that can access the child’s Epic account.

Confusing screen-time settings with purchase settings
Symptom: A daily play limit is active, but the child can still buy V-Bucks. Fix: Treat time and payment as two separate jobs. Keep the Fortnite/UEFN time controls, then configure the store or Epic payment route.
Using a platform restriction that does not cover the payment route
Symptom: Android controls are enabled, but purchases still go through a different account or checkout path. Fix: Identify whether the transaction uses Google Play, an Epic account or another provider, then apply the restriction to that account and confirm it with a supervised test.
Letting the child know the PIN
Symptom: Controls keep changing back. Fix: Change the six-digit PIN to one that is not used elsewhere, keep it private, and protect the parent email and platform family-manager credentials.

Symptom: A family checks the setting by confirming a V-Bucks transaction and then tries to reverse it. Fix: Stop at the approval, password or blocked-checkout screen. The goal is to verify the control, not to create a charge or rely on a refund.

Epic’s published guidance does not describe one universal Fortnite allowance such as a fixed monthly V-Bucks budget. Instead, it provides a routing model: platform payment controls for consoles and Apple devices, device-specific controls for Android, and removal of stored payment methods for Epic purchases on Windows PC. If you need a precise monetary ceiling, check whether the payment account or card issuer offers its own limit or alert, and do not mistake that external setting for a Fortnite feature.
Removing a card is the strongest PC action specifically identified by Epic, but it is different from setting a recurring allowance. On consoles and mobile devices, the available choice may be an approval requirement, a purchase block or a restriction on in-app purchases rather than a Fortnite-specific dollar amount. Record what each platform actually enforces so another adult in the household does not assume that one setting applies everywhere.
When settings or menus look different
Epic and platform menus can change with software updates, account age, region and device edition. Start from the Fortnite Parental Controls screen and the current Epic support instructions, then follow the payment-control instructions for the platform in use. If an option is missing, check that the child is signed in to the intended account, that the parent email is verified, and that you are editing the family-manager account rather than the child profile.
For a child under the applicable digital-consent age, check whether the account is cabined before troubleshooting ordinary controls. The cabined state can disable voice chat and real-money purchases until a parent completes verification and consent, so the available switches may not match those on an older account.
If a control appears to work in one mode but not another, trace the transaction or activity to its account. Fortnite play and UEFN activity are measured at the same Epic account, while store purchases may be tied to a console, Apple, Google or Epic account. That distinction usually explains why a setting appears inconsistent.
