The reliable way to stop unwanted Toca Boca World purchases is to control the Apple Account or Google Play account that processes the payment. Toca Boca World does not have a separate purchase gate that overrides the store account. On iPhone and iPad, combine Screen Time restrictions with Apple’s Ask to Buy. On Android, use Google Play family controls and choose an approval level for purchases. Keep the parent verification method and account credentials private, and remember that Toca Boca World in-app purchases are not shared through Apple Family Sharing.
Why the app-store account controls every Toca Boca World purchase
Toca Boca World purchases are billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play account signed in on the device. That account, rather than a standalone Toca Boca password, determines whether a purchase can proceed, which payment method is charged and where the transaction appears in the receipt history.

This distinction matters on family tablets and phones. If a child is using a device signed in to an adult’s store account, the store may treat the child’s tap as the account holder’s purchase unless you add a platform-level restriction. Toca Boca’s own settings cannot replace those controls.

- Apple devices: Screen Time can restrict purchases and downloads, while Ask to Buy can send an eligible request to a parent for approval.
- Android devices: Google Play family controls can require approval for all content, all purchases using the family payment method, or only in-app purchases.
- Store boundary: Google Play approvals apply to purchases processed through Google Play billing. A different store account or payment path is outside that approval setting.
Names and locations of settings can vary with the device operating-system version, the child’s age and account type, family-management setup and country or region. If a label in your menus differs from the wording below, look for the equivalent Screen Time or Google Play family-control option rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.

Set up purchase approval on iPhone or iPad
Apple provides two complementary protections: a restriction that blocks or limits purchase activity on the device, and Ask to Buy, which lets a child request an eligible download or purchase for a parent to approve or decline. Apple documentation describes Ask to Buy as covering eligible app downloads and purchases, including in-app purchases.
1. Open the child’s family and Screen Time settings
- Open Settings on the parent’s iPhone or iPad.
- Select the child under Family, or open Screen Time and choose the child’s profile.
- Open Apps & Websites or the available Screen Time restrictions for that child.
The exact menu can differ when the child is not managed through an Apple family group. In that case, open Screen Time directly on the child’s device and select the controls available for that profile.
2. Restrict purchases and downloads
Turn on the Screen Time restrictions that block unwanted app purchases and downloads. This is the preventative layer: it stops a child from freely completing a transaction or installing content without the restriction being cleared.
Choose the strictest setting that fits your household. A child who should not initiate any store transaction needs a block rather than a lighter warning. If you allow some downloads, test the setting with a free app before handing the device back; the goal is to confirm that the device asks for the parent’s Screen Time authorization instead of silently using the stored payment method.

3. Enable Ask to Buy
- In the child’s family controls, open Ask to Buy.
- Turn on Require Purchase Approval.
- When the child attempts an eligible Toca Boca World purchase, review the request on the parent device and choose approve or decline.
Ask to Buy is an approval workflow, not a promise that every possible payment path will be intercepted. It applies to eligible transactions handled by Apple’s store system. Keep the parent Apple Account credentials private so the child cannot authenticate a purchase independently.
4. Protect the controls themselves
- Use a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know.
- Do not share the parent Apple Account password or device passcode used to authorize purchases.
- Check which Apple Account is signed in for App Store purchases on each family device. The account that buys the content is the account tied to the transaction.
- After changing a restriction, close and reopen the app and, if necessary, restart the device so you can verify the behavior from the child’s profile.
If the child can still buy without a request, check that Ask to Buy is enabled for the correct child and that the device is using the expected family account. A restriction configured on one Apple Account does not automatically govern a different purchasing account.
Require approval on Android with Google Play
On Android, the relevant controls live in Google Play family management. They govern transactions made through Google Play’s billing system, so start by confirming that the child’s managed Google account is the account used by Google Play on the device.
1. Open the child’s Google Play family controls
- Open Google Play family controls for the child’s managed account.
- Open Controls on Google Play.
- Select Purchase & download approvals.
If the child’s profile is not the one shown, stop and correct the family-management setup first. Applying an approval rule to the wrong profile will not protect the account that Toca Boca World is actually using.

2. Choose an approval level
Google Play presents three relevant choices. Select the one that matches what the child is allowed to do:

For a child who should never be able to buy Toca Boca World packs independently, choose the strongest option consistent with your household rules. Keep the parent verification method private; if the child can complete parent verification, an approval setting is not an effective barrier.
3. Confirm the billing path
These approvals apply to purchases made through Google Play billing. A transaction made with a different store account or through another payment path is outside this particular control. Check the account shown in Google Play and the purchase method associated with the app before assuming a missing approval prompt is a platform failure.

The operating-system controls are account-based. Installing Toca Boca World on several devices does not make those devices share one universal parental-control switch.

Toca Boca’s Help Center states: “At this time, we do not support Family Sharing for in-app purchases.” Purchased content is available only to the account that made the purchase. Do not buy a Toca Boca World pack on one family member’s account expecting it to appear automatically in another child’s account through Apple Family Sharing.
This limitation is separate from purchase approval. Family Sharing concerns access to purchased content; Ask to Buy concerns whether an eligible purchase can proceed. You may use Apple’s family controls to review a child’s request, but that does not turn a purchase into a shared entitlement for every account in the family.
Before approving a request, check which child’s store account is active and whether that is the account that should own the content. An approval made for the wrong account can create both an unwanted charge and an ownership problem.
A practical setup for shared family devices
Use this checklist when several children use the same iPhone, iPad or Android tablet:
- Give each child the correct managed family account rather than leaving an adult purchasing account active for everyone.
- Enable the platform’s purchase restriction before installing or handing over Toca Boca World.
- Turn on Apple Ask to Buy or the appropriate Google Play approval level.
- Keep the Screen Time passcode, parent Apple Account credentials and Google Play verification method private.
- Check the store account before approving a purchase, especially if children switch profiles on one device.
- Review the store receipt or purchase history after an approved transaction so you know which account owns the content.
- When a child moves to another device, repeat the account and approval check there; controls do not automatically protect a different purchasing account.
This arrangement separates three decisions that are often confused: whether the child may request a purchase, whether the adult approves it and which account receives the purchased content.
What to do after an accidental charge
Identify the store before requesting help
First determine whether the charge was processed by Apple or Google Play. Look at the receipt, the payment statement and the purchase history for the family account. The store that processed the transaction controls the current purchase-support and refund process.

Follow Apple’s current process for an Apple-billed transaction or Google Play’s current process for a Google Play transaction. There is no single Toca Boca refund rule that replaces the store’s procedure, and eligibility can depend on the account and transaction details.
Secure the account before trying again
- Change the parent verification credential if the child knew or discovered it.
- Recheck the child profile selected in Screen Time or Google Play family controls.
- Confirm that the purchase restriction is still enabled after any device, account or region change.
- Do not rely on uninstalling Toca Boca World to prevent another charge; the billing permission belongs to the store account.
Troubleshoot a missing approval prompt
The child can buy without an Apple request
- Verify that Ask to Buy is enabled for the correct child, not another family member.
- Confirm that the device is signed in to the Apple Account managed by that family setup.
- Check that Screen Time restrictions are active and that the child does not know the Screen Time passcode.
- Review the device’s region, account age and family configuration, because Apple labels and availability can vary.
The child can buy without a Google Play request
- Confirm that Google Play is using the child’s managed account.
- Reopen Controls on Google Play → Purchase & download approvals and verify the selected level.
- Check whether the transaction is being processed through Google Play billing. A different store account or payment path is outside this approval rule.
- Review family-management status, account age and region if the expected option is missing.
The option is not visible at all
Do not assume the feature was removed. Check whether you are viewing the child’s account, whether the device is enrolled in the family-management setup and whether the current platform help page uses a different label. Settings can vary by device, account, age and region. If the control still does not appear, contact the relevant platform’s support channel with the account and device details before allowing purchases.

For most families focused specifically on Toca Boca World, the narrowest effective rule is approval for in-app purchases, provided the transaction uses the managed store account. If you also want to control downloads or every family-payment charge, select the broader option.
