Set age limits on the profile your child will use, then protect that profile from being bypassed by switching to an adult one. Netflix offers per-profile maturity ratings and title blocks; HBO Max combines Kids-profile ratings with an exit code and adult-profile PINs; Disney+ offers profile ratings, Junior Mode, and profile-access controls. Labels and steps can vary by country, device, and app version, so check the active profile after making changes.
What these controls do—and what they do not
A content rating limits what is available on one profile; it does not automatically restrict every profile on the account. A PIN or exit code is a separate access safeguard: it helps prevent a child from switching to a less-restricted profile. For a shared account, set the child’s profile limits and secure adult profiles the child could open.

Ratings are a guide to age suitability, not a guarantee that every title below a chosen rating will suit every child. Review a title’s details and advisories when needed. Netflix notes that ratings can be assigned by Netflix or a local standards organization and vary by region. Netflix’s maturity-rating guidance explains its labels and profile settings.
Set parental controls on Netflix
Use a browser to set a profile’s maturity rating
- Open the Netflix Account page in a browser.
- Select Profiles, then Adjust parental controls, and choose the profile to change.
- Verify your identity using the code sent by email or mobile phone, or your Netflix account password.
- Choose the desired Maturity Rating and select Save.
Netflix says a profile’s rating determines which titles matching that level are available. A Kids profile’s maturity rating must be changed in a web browser.

Change restrictions in the Netflix app
On a phone or tablet, tap My Netflix, tap the profile name, choose Manage Profiles, select the profile, then tap Viewing Restrictions and Maturity Rating. Enter the account password when prompted and choose the desired rating.
Block a specific title
If a particular show or movie is unsuitable even though its rating is otherwise allowed, use Netflix’s profile viewing restrictions to block that title by name. This is separate from lowering the overall maturity limit.

Interpret Netflix ratings in your region
Netflix’s US examples include TV-Y, TV-Y7, G, TV-G, PG, TV-PG, PG-13, TV-14, R, TV-MA, and NC-17. These labels are not universal; use the labels shown for your country. Netflix also notes that a series’ overall maturity level may reflect its most mature season or episode, and an individual season can have a different rating. Ratings and advisories appear in title details.
Set up a Kids profile and safeguards on HBO Max
Create a Kids profile and choose a ratings group
- Open the profile menu in HBO Max and select + New Profile.
- Choose an avatar or skip that step, then enter the child’s name.
- Turn on Kids Mode and choose a Ratings group. The US help page identifies PG / TV-PG as the default.
- Optionally enable Kid-Proof Exit, add the child’s birthdate, and save.
The selected ratings group limits what a Kids profile can watch and find in search; the profile’s home screen and search results show titles permitted by those settings. To edit a profile, use Manage Profiles on a phone, tablet, or computer; profile editing is also available on TV.

Stop a child switching to an adult profile
Enable Kid-Proof Exit so leaving Kids mode requires the four-digit Parent Code. Add a Profile PIN to each adult profile the child might access. HBO Max may prompt for the Parent Code when someone leaves Kids mode, and requires the PIN to enter an adult profile protected by one. These are distinct controls: the Kids ratings filter content, while the code and PIN protect profile switching.
HBO Max opens the last-used profile on computer, phone, and tablet. On TV, it opens the last-used Kids profile if one was used; after an adult profile was last used, it shows Who’s Watching. In a shared household, don’t rely on the startup screen alone—protect adult profiles as well as configuring the child’s profile. These directions reflect the US HBO Max Kids-profile help page; wording and availability may differ elsewhere.

Disney+ says titles above a profile’s selected content rating are not shown while browsing or searching. Junior Mode provides an interface with series and movies selected for younger viewers; a regular profile can instead have a content-rating limit. Disney+ materials indicate non-Junior profiles may default to a family-friendly rating, so check the profile currently in use rather than assuming its default matches your intended limit. See the Disney+ guide to profile settings and Junior Mode help page.

Review unrated and live content and profile access
The Not Rated & Live Content setting can prevent a profile from viewing live content that has no assigned rating. Disney+ also lists Profile PINs and profile-creation restriction as available controls, which address access to profiles and creation of new ones rather than the rating ceiling itself. The help-page materials confirm these features but do not establish a single click-by-click path; use the current profile-editing controls in a supported browser or mobile app, and verify the selected profile’s settings.

Check the setup with the child’s profile
- Confirm the child is using the profile you changed, not an older or adult profile.
- Browse and search for a title above the chosen limit to check that the profile’s filtering behaves as expected.
- Try profile switching to confirm the relevant Parent Code or PIN is enabled.
- Revisit settings if the service updates its app, the household changes devices, or the profile’s country-specific rating labels differ from what you expect.
