That alone does not restore power to a computer, wait for your network, recover every camera or source, or guarantee that YouTube makes a scheduled event live. For a Windows-and-YouTube example, configure each part of that chain and test it under supervision before relying on unattended recovery.
What has to recover after an outage
Resuming a broadcast is a chain of separate events: power returns, the computer starts, Windows launches OBS, the network is ready, OBS connects to the streaming destination, the video and audio sources work, and the platform makes the event live. OBS’s launch parameter addresses only the step where OBS starts streaming. Its Automatic Reconnect setting is separate; it is not a complete power-outage recovery system. OBS’s overview guide describes reconnect behavior and streaming setup.

- Power and computer startup: The PC must turn back on after power returns. OBS’s launch option cannot make a computer start after an outage. The specific firmware or hardware settings needed for automatic power-on are outside this walkthrough.
- OBS startup: Windows must launch OBS with the correct profile and scene collection.
- Network and sources: The connection, camera, microphone, and any network-based inputs must be available when OBS needs them.
- Platform event: The platform must accept the encoder feed and, for a scheduled event, be configured to start appropriately.
Prepare and verify the OBS broadcast
Before automating anything, open OBS and confirm the profile, scene collection, intended scene, streaming destination, stream settings, and sources. Test the picture and audio using OBS’s Quick Start guidance rather than assuming a saved setup will work after reboot.

- Check that the correct scene is active and that the preview shows the intended content.
- Verify audio levels and any camera or network inputs you depend on.
- Confirm the streaming service and event settings are the ones you intend to use.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
Set OBS to start streaming when launched on Windows
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter. Its launch-parameter instructions explain how to append it to a Windows shortcut’s Target field, or use it when launching OBS from a scheduled task.

Option 1: Add the parameter to an OBS shortcut
- Locate the OBS executable, usually named
obs64.exeon a 64-bit Windows installation. The exact installation location can vary. - Create or edit a shortcut that launches that executable.
- Open the shortcut’s Properties and select the Shortcut tab.
- In Target, leave the executable path in place and append a space followed by
--startstreaming. For example:"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Use the actual path on your computer. - Apply the change and test the shortcut while someone can monitor OBS and the live event.
If the executable path contains spaces, keep the path inside quotation marks and place the parameter after the closing quotation mark. OBS documents the launch parameter; the example path is illustrative, not a claim that every installation uses that location.
Option 2: Launch OBS from a scheduled task
OBS also documents launching with the parameter through a scheduled task. Set the task to run OBS with --startstreaming. In the task’s Start in field, enter the folder containing obs64.exe, as OBS specifies in its launch-parameter guide. Task Scheduler options and exact steps can vary with the Windows setup; the source guidance does not establish a universal task configuration.

Whichever launch method you use, make sure Windows will actually run it after the computer restarts. Also verify that OBS starts with the intended profile and scenes. A running OBS window by itself does not prove that the broadcast is public or receiving the correct video.
Account for network timing and source recovery
After an outage, OBS may launch before the router or other network equipment is ready. An OBS forum user reported reconnect trouble when OBS tried before the network recovered; that is an individual report, not proof that every Windows 11 system behaves this way. The forum discussion illustrates why timing should be tested on your own setup.

A delayed or network-aware launch may help in some configurations, but the exact setup depends on the machine and Windows configuration and is not established here. Do not assume that OBS reconnect will detect and repair every failure. A camera, capture device, or network input can fail independently of the stream connection, so check its recovery separately.
Check YouTube’s event settings
For YouTube, OBS needs the event’s server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe connecting an encoder. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the preview in Live Control Room and then click Go live. That means an OBS launch parameter and a valid key do not by themselves guarantee that every scheduled event will become live.

YouTube also provides Auto-start and Auto-stop settings. When enabled, YouTube says, the encoder can start or stop the stream. Check the settings for the specific event and test the actual reboot sequence; consult Manage live stream settings for the platform controls.

Restart automation does not change audience or child-safety requirements. YouTube says some features are disabled or restricted for streams marked as made for kids, including live chat. It also says streams featuring minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. Review YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions and set up the stream accordingly; automation is not a workaround for those rules.
Test the full recovery sequence before leaving it unattended
- Arrange supervision and use a test or otherwise appropriate event. Do not begin with an unattended public broadcast.
- Restart the computer or simulate the relevant outage scenario, then let the computer and network equipment complete startup.
- Confirm that OBS opens with the intended profile and scene, and inspect the preview and audio.
- Check that cameras and other sources have returned; reconnect or correct them if they have not.
- Verify that YouTube receives the encoder feed, check stream health and audio/video quality, and confirm that the event is actually live. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe checking the incoming preview before going live.
- Repeat under the conditions you expect to encounter, including the time it takes your network equipment to return. Do not treat one successful launch as proof that every outage will recover correctly.
