Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOBS can start streaming automatically after it launches, but it cannot turn a powered-off computer back on. To recover a 24/7 ambient stream after an outage, set the computer to power on when AC returns, arrange for the operating system to launch OBS, and add OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter. Then test the complete chain—including the streaming platform—because these steps do not guarantee an uninterrupted stream or that the same live event resumes.
What has to recover after an outage?
There is no single OBS switch for power-outage recovery. The setup has several independent links:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Power and firmware: the computer must start when electricity returns.
- Operating system: it must boot far enough to launch OBS, without stopping at a sign-in or confirmation screen.
- OBS: it must open the intended scene and sources, then start streaming.
- Network and streaming platform: the connection must return, and the platform must accept the output. A successful OBS launch alone does not verify this final step.
A failure at any link can leave the channel offline. Configure and test each one on the actual computer.
Set the computer to turn on when power returns
Find the firmware power-loss setting
Open the computer or motherboard’s firmware setup and look for a setting describing what to do after AC power loss. The name and menu location depend on the manufacturer and model; consult the system manual rather than assuming another machine uses the same path.

For an ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO example, ASUS documents Advanced → APM Configuration → Restore AC Power Loss. Choose Power On to have the system boot when power returns. The other documented choices are Power Off, which leaves it off, and Last State, which restores the prior power state. These labels and options may differ on other systems. ASUS notes the feature may not trigger if power is restored immediately after a loss. ASUS firmware guidance
Do not confuse a UPS with auto-power-on
A UPS can help keep a PC and network equipment powered through a brief interruption, but it does not configure the motherboard to start after a longer outage or make OBS relaunch. Its runtime depends on the connected load and the UPS; do not assume a particular duration without calculating those requirements.

Choose a startup method
Windows 10 and 11 can launch startup apps when a user signs in. Microsoft documents two places to manage them:

Add the OBS launch parameter
OBS documents the --startstreaming parameter as a way to automatically start streaming when OBS launches. On Windows, its launch-parameter guide describes adding parameters to a shortcut:
- Locate the OBS shortcut and open Properties.
- In Target, append
--startstreamingafter the quoted executable path. A typical example is"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Your installation path may differ. - For a scheduled or other automated launch, set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - Use that configured shortcut or launch entry in your chosen startup method, then test it from a fresh boot.
OBS also documents --profile "name", --collection "name", and --scene "name" for selecting a profile, scene collection, or scene. Add these only if you need to specify the state OBS should open; confirm the names match your OBS setup. Keep stream keys out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs. OBS launch parameters

Set up launch parameters on macOS
OBS documents launching with parameters on macOS through an Automator application using open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming, or by passing the same form in Terminal. Its launch-parameter page does not provide a complete current setup for adding that Automator app as a login item. Confirm the login behavior on your macOS version and test after a restart rather than assuming the command alone configures startup. OBS launch parameters

Check OBS before relying on it
OBS recommends checking output settings and testing for a few minutes. Its auto-configuration wizard takes hardware and network conditions into account, but compatible system requirements do not guarantee that a particular stream will run successfully. CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS Quick Start Guide · OBS system requirements
- Confirm the intended OBS profile, scene collection, and scene open after launch.
- Check that media files, audio, and other scene sources are available after reboot.
- Confirm the network reconnects and OBS reaches a live state, not merely that the application window opens.
- Check the streaming service’s live dashboard after the test. Whether a service resumes the same event, waits for a reconnect, or requires a new event depends on that service and was not established here.
- Test the full recovery path under controlled conditions before relying on it. A manual launch test does not establish that power restoration, sign-in, startup, network reconnection, and platform behavior all work unattended.
Common recovery failures and fixes
| What happens | Likely point of failure | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The computer stays off after power returns | Firmware power-loss behavior is disabled, set to leave the system off, or did not trigger. | Check the manufacturer’s firmware instructions and power-loss setting. On the documented ASUS example, select Power On; other systems may use different names. |
| The computer boots, but OBS does not open | The startup method may run only after sign-in, or the OS may be waiting at a prompt. | Check Windows Startup settings or Task Manager, then test whether sign-in or another screen prevents unattended launch. |
| OBS opens, but does not start streaming | The parameter may not be attached to the shortcut or automated launch that actually runs. | Check the shortcut’s Target for --startstreaming after the executable path and verify the launch method uses that shortcut. |
| OBS opens with the wrong scene or missing media | The launched profile, collection, or scene is not the intended one, or a source is unavailable after reboot. | Check the selected state and confirm media and other sources are accessible in the post-restart environment. |
| OBS appears ready, but the channel is not live | Network recovery, output settings, or platform-side live-session behavior may be the issue. | Check OBS output and live status, verify connectivity, and inspect the platform’s live dashboard. Do not assume the previous event or URL has resumed. |
Recording alongside the stream
If OBS also records locally, an unfinished MP4 or MOV recording may be unrecoverable after a power loss because the file may not have been finalized. OBS’s English localization file suggests MKV for recordings with multiple audio tracks, followed by remuxing after recording. That file is on a mutable development branch, so verify the current OBS interface and guidance before relying on version-specific recording instructions. OBS English localization file
