To make OBS retry a 24/7 waterfall stream after a connection drop, open Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced if needed, then enable Automatically Reconnect and choose a retry delay and maximum retry count. This reconnects a supported output; it does not relaunch OBS if the application crashes or closes.
Reconnect the stream output in OBS
- Open the output controls: In OBS Studio, select Settings → Output. If the reconnect controls are not visible, change Output Mode to Advanced.
- Enable retries: In the streaming output settings, turn on Automatically Reconnect.
- Choose retry behavior: Set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. Pick values appropriate to your connection and destination rather than assuming one setting suits every stream. OBS does not publish a universal recommended delay or retry limit.
- Apply and test: Save the settings and test the recovery chain before leaving the stream unattended. Exact control placement can vary by OBS release and output mode. The current English interface labels are documented in OBS’s English UI strings; OBS’s streaming guide identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced output setting.
OBS’s output API reference describes a maximum retry count and starting wait, with the wait doubling on each retry. That reference is for OBS 29.0.0, so the backoff detail may differ in other releases; do not treat it as a guaranteed current schedule. OBS output API reference.

Reconnect is not the same as restarting OBS
Automatic reconnect is for an output that disconnects while OBS remains open. If OBS itself exits or crashes, the output retry setting cannot start the application again. OBS documents the launch parameter --startstreaming, which starts streaming when OBS launches, but a separate operating-system task or process supervisor must detect that OBS has exited and relaunch it. If you configure a supervisor, make sure it opens the intended OBS profile, scene collection, and stream destination as well as using the launch parameter. Test the complete sequence—failure detection, application launch, and stream start—before relying on it unattended.

Diagnose what actually stopped
A disconnected output, an OBS process exit, and a destination platform ending its broadcast are different failures. Identify which occurred before changing settings: reconnect retries address the first; process supervision addresses the second; the platform’s own guidance governs the third. OBS does not establish a universal promise that reconnecting preserves one continuous broadcast or archive.
Fix dropped frames and intermittent disconnections
OBS attributes dropped frames and disconnects primarily to an unstable route to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Work through the connection path before replacing equipment. OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

Check the ingest server and bitrate
- Try a different ingest server if the destination offers one.
- Lower the streaming bitrate to a level your stable upload connection can sustain, while remaining within the destination’s limits.
- Dynamic bitrate can be a fallback, but it may reduce picture quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.
Check OBS network settings
- Test the Bind to IP setting if routing or interface selection may be involved.
- On Windows, OBS lists network optimization/TCP pacing and an IPv4-only test as troubleshooting options. If IPv4-only changes nothing, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
Check the local network and computer
- Use wired Ethernet if the streaming PC is on Wi-Fi; OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming.
- Check firewall or antivirus software, VPNs, bundled network utilities, and outdated network drivers.
- Inspect the modem/router connection and look for a faulty cable, adapter, or network device. Replace hardware only when a fault is supported by diagnosis; OBS advises contacting your ISP if troubleshooting has not resolved the issue and consulting it before replacing equipment if you are unsure.
Confirm the destination’s reconnect and content rules
Reconnect windows, broadcast state, and archive continuity depend on the platform and stream configuration. Check the current guidance for the exact destination before promising viewers an uninterrupted broadcast. For a waterfall stream made from prerecorded footage, also ensure you have the rights to the video and audio and follow the platform’s current copyright and reused-content rules; a successful technical reconnect does not establish that the content is permitted.
