To make OBS start a YouTube lofi stream when your computer logs in, first configure and test the scene and YouTube stream, then launch OBS with the --startstreaming parameter. On Windows, add it to an OBS shortcut’s Target; on macOS, create an Automator application that runs OBS with the parameter. Starting automatically is not the same as staying live without interruption: network, power, computer, and platform failures can still stop a broadcast.
Prepare and test the stream before automating it
OBS launching and YouTube beginning a broadcast are separate behaviors. Configure both before relying on startup automation.
- Configure the OBS scene. Add the lofi video or image and audio sources you intend to use. Play the scene and check that the audio mixer meters move as expected.
- Set up YouTube in OBS. Select the YouTube service or server and the intended stream key. Confirm you have selected the correct scene, profile, and broadcast before enabling automatic start.
- Run the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and apply settings suited to your computer and connection. OBS performance varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Test the actual stream. Start a short test with representative video and audio, and check YouTube’s stream health. OBS and YouTube both recommend testing before depending on the setup.
For a scheduled YouTube event, YouTube recommends having the encoder ready 15 minutes before the event; that advice is for event preparation, not a requirement for a persistent stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Choose encoder settings your connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s published recommendations as starting points, not guarantees. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for secure ingestion. Match the encoder, resolution, and frame rate in OBS to your hardware and available upload bandwidth.

| Setting | Starting point or guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose a combination your encoder and network can maintain; YouTube’s examples include 1080p/30 and 720p/30. | Higher frame rates and more complex scenes can demand more system resources. |
| Video bitrate | H.264: 5 Mbps at 1080p/30; 3 Mbps at 720p/30 (YouTube Help recommendations; publication year not displayed). | Run a representative test and monitor YouTube stream health rather than assuming a published bitrate will work on every connection. |
| Rate control and keyframes | CBR; two-second keyframe frequency, per YouTube’s encoder guidance. | Set these in the encoder output settings used by the active OBS profile. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS, recommended by YouTube for secure ingestion. | Use the YouTube server/service configuration selected for the broadcast. |
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate (YouTube Help; publication year not displayed). Treat that as capacity for variation, not spare bandwidth to fill with other uploads. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates and OBS’s streaming guide.
Set OBS to start streaming at login
OBS documents --startstreaming to start streaming automatically. You can also add --minimize-to-tray if you want OBS to open minimized. Confirm the intended scene, profile, and YouTube broadcast are selected before using either parameter.

Windows: add parameters to an OBS shortcut
- Create or copy a shortcut to OBS Studio.
- Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
- In Target, add a space after the executable path and append
--startstreaming. If desired, append--minimize-to-trayafter another space. - Apply the change. Put the shortcut in the Windows startup location or use your preferred login-launch method, then sign in and test that OBS opens and the intended stream begins.
If launching through Task Scheduler or another automated method, set Start in to the directory containing obs64.exe. OBS warns that automated launches need this working directory. Follow the official OBS launch-parameter instructions.
macOS: create an Automator launcher
- Open Automator and create an application workflow.
- Add the Run Shell Script action.
- Enter
open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming. To start minimized as well, add--minimize-to-trayafter--startstreaming. - Save the workflow as an application, then arrange for that application to open at login using the startup controls available in your macOS version.
- Log in and test the launcher with your intended OBS scene and YouTube broadcast.
OBS documents the Automator launcher method, but the exact login interface can vary by macOS version. See OBS launch parameters.

Linux: identify your desktop environment first
OBS documents the --startstreaming parameter, but desktop autostart setup depends on the Linux distribution and desktop environment. Identify those details before choosing a login autostart entry or service; a single platform-neutral recipe cannot be established here.
Configure YouTube’s broadcast start and stop behavior
OBS’s --startstreaming starts the encoder stream from OBS. YouTube’s encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls govern whether an incoming encoder feed starts or ends the YouTube broadcast. These are distinct controls, so choose settings that match whether you are running a scheduled event or keeping a persistent broadcast open. Test the complete behavior before leaving it unattended. YouTube describes these controls in its live control room settings.

Plan for outages and decide how to keep a replay
In OBS, review Settings → Advanced → Network → Automatically Reconnect and enable/configure it for your connection. Automatic reconnect can help OBS recover after a dropped connection; it cannot prevent a power outage, computer failure, operating-system restart, or YouTube-side incident. YouTube cautions, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream,” and recommends bandwidth above the stream’s total bitrate. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Do not count on a single continuous 24/7 broadcast being fully archived. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The YouTube Help page does not display a publication year. If a replay matters, record a local archive or plan shorter broadcasts and verify the resulting archive. YouTube explicitly recommends a local recording as backup. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot startup and streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS opens, but the stream does not start. | The launch parameter is missing or malformed, or OBS has not selected the intended stream configuration. | Check the shortcut Target or Automator command for --startstreaming; verify the YouTube service/server, stream key, scene, and profile, then test manually. |
| Automated Windows launch fails or behaves differently. | The working directory is not set for a scheduled or automated launch. | Set Task Scheduler’s Start in directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. |
| The stream starts but drops or reports poor health. | Upload capacity is insufficient or variable, or the computer cannot sustain the encoder settings. | Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate; check upload headroom and test the revised settings while monitoring stream health. |
| The YouTube broadcast does not start or stop as expected. | YouTube auto-start/auto-stop behavior and OBS encoder start behavior are being treated as the same setting. | Review both YouTube broadcast controls and OBS launch settings, then test the intended scheduled or persistent-stream workflow. |
| No full replay appears after a long broadcast. | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. | Use local recording for a full backup or plan shorter streams if YouTube archives are important. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer at home responsible for a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.
