To loop prerecorded lessons through OBS, add a VLC Video Source to your scene, load the videos in the order you want, and keep Loop Playlist enabled. Then connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream using RTMPS, test playback, and monitor stream health. This creates a looping broadcast, not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime or a complete YouTube archive.
Before you set up the playlist
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. The VLC Video Source requires VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- Prepare local video files that you have the necessary rights to stream. Check that the files play correctly and that their audio is suitable for a continuous broadcast.
- Make sure your YouTube channel can livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-stream setup requirements.
Add and configure the OBS playlist
- Open the broadcast scene. In OBS, select or create the scene you intend to send to YouTube.
- Add the source. In the Sources panel, choose +, select VLC Video Source, and create the source.
- Load the videos. Add the local media files to the source playlist in the intended order. OBS’s VLC source supports multiple media items, much like an image slideshow. OBS documents the VLC Video Source controls here.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents this option as on by default. It restarts the source after it reaches the end of its media files.
- Choose whether lessons play in sequence or shuffle. Shuffle Playlist is off by default. Leave it off for a curriculum where lesson order matters; enable it only if random order suits the channel.
- Check Visibility Behaviour. OBS’s default is to stop playback while the source is not visible and restart it when visible. If the source is hidden in another scene and must keep playing, change the behaviour and test it. A source that stops unexpectedly when switching scenes can otherwise interrupt the programme.
- Preview the whole scene. Check the video, transitions, and audio, including the end of one file and start of the next. If a lesson has no audio, decide whether the resulting silence is acceptable rather than letting it happen unintentionally.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then open its stream settings.
- Use RTMPS for a standard setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Copy the server and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding OBS stream settings. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Set encoder output to match your programme. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you actually use. There is no single bitrate that fits every stream. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table.
- Allow upload headroom. Your sustained upload capacity needs to support the configured bitrate, with room for normal variation. YouTube recommends adequate bandwidth and testing with representative audio and video. Review YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Start with a test. Confirm that the playlist is advancing, audio is present, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream before relying on the broadcast. Continue to monitor stream health during operation.
When HLS is appropriate
RTMPS is the straightforward choice for standard SDR educational playback. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency and gives it additional encoder and transport requirements: TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte-range mode, and no encryption other than HTTPS. Use HLS only when your encoder and YouTube stream settings are deliberately configured for it. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.

Plan for interruptions and a usable archive
YouTube’s automatic archive is not a 24/7 recording plan
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream when it is under 12 hours, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube replay. If preserving the full programme matters, record locally and verify that the file is being written and contains usable audio and video. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

Check what happens if OBS stops, the computer restarts, power is lost, or the internet connection drops. YouTube’s guidance recommends sufficient upload bandwidth, headroom, test streams, and monitoring, but does not prescribe a particular India-based ISP, UPS size, or 24/7 hardware setup. Choose backup power and connectivity based on your location and requirements, and test them rather than assuming they will preserve the broadcast.

Rights and monetization are separate from playback
Clear rights for every item in the loop
Only broadcast lessons, music, images, and other material for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for having those rights and complying with rules in the stream territory. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content and may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even when you have a licence, a rights holder may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Make sure permissions cover streaming and any archive you plan to keep. YouTube livestream terms and YouTube copyright guidance.
A loop does not guarantee monetization eligibility
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to livestreams and expects original, authentic content. In 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content”; generic, repetitive, mass-produced, or reused material can make a channel ineligible. Make the educational value and your contribution clear. Putting existing videos into a continuous playlist, by itself, does not establish monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s monetization policies.

Troubleshooting common playlist and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing or does not work | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list. |
| Playback stops at the end of the playlist | Loop Playlist is off, or the source cannot continue through the media list. | Enable Loop Playlist and test the transition from the final item back to the first. |
| A lesson restarts or stops after changing scenes | Visibility Behaviour is set to stop while not visible. | Review that source setting and test scene changes with the selected behaviour. |
| Viewers hear silence or abrupt audio changes | One or more files have no audio or differ in level or format. | Preview transitions and audio across the playlist; adjust the programme or files before broadcasting. |
| YouTube reports a poor or unstable stream | Configured bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity, or output settings may not match YouTube’s recommendations. | Check stream health, resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and the current bitrate guidance; retest with upload headroom. |
| The livestream is interrupted during a lesson | A connection or encoder interruption, or detected third-party content, may be involved. | Check OBS and YouTube status, connection stability, and rights for the material; test your recovery procedure. |
| The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete | A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a 24/7 record; use and verify a local recording if a complete archive is needed. |
