Use VLC Video for a playlist
OBS Studio’s VLC Video source can play a playlist of media files, making it the appropriate choice when you want multiple clips to run in sequence. VLC must be installed on the computer running OBS. The OBS guide specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources

- Install VLC. Install the version that matches your OBS architecture; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Add the source. In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream. In the Sources dock, select +, choose VLC Video, and create or select the source.
- Add and order the files. In the source properties, add the local video files to the playlist and arrange them in the desired sequence. The list order determines playback order when shuffle is off.
- Choose playlist behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for predictable order. Set Loop Playlist on to restart from the first clip after the last one, or off to end playback when the list runs out. OBS documents shuffle off and looping on as the defaults.
- Place the source in the layout. Confirm the VLC Video source is visible in the active scene, then resize and position it to fit your composition. OBS scenes combine sources into the layout sent to the stream. OBS Sources Guide
- Check playback. Start the playlist in OBS and confirm that the clips advance in the expected order and that their audio is audible in the intended mix.
Choose between VLC Video and Media Source
| OBS source | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video | Several files played as one ordered playlist | Requires VLC to be installed. Provides playlist-level shuffle and loop controls. |
| Media Source | One local video file | Supports formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM, and provides a per-file loop option. It also includes controls for restarting when active and showing nothing when playback ends. |
Both source types are documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The built-in Media Source is organized around an individual file; for a multi-file sequence in one source, use VLC Video. OBS Media Sources
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or select a live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you plan to use. YouTube’s encoder workflow supplies a stream URL and stream key. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key or connect using the available YouTube account workflow. If configuring the encoder with a custom server, use the stream URL and key provided for that stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a visible scene, screen recording, or public post. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
- Start OBS and check the preview. Start streaming from OBS and use YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that the incoming feed appears correctly before the public event begins.
YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream. Rehearse with audio and video similar to what you plan to use, preview the incoming feed, and monitor audio and video quality while live. YouTube live streaming tips – Computer · Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Troubleshoot sequence and stream problems
- VLC Video is missing or will not load: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as required by the OBS guide, then reopen OBS and check the source again.
- Clips play in an unexpected order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist and verify the file order in the VLC Video playlist.
- The sequence stops after the last clip: Turn on Loop Playlist if you want it to restart. With looping off, playback ends when the playlist runs out.
- The video does not appear on YouTube: Confirm that the VLC Video source is in the scene currently being sent to the stream and that it is visible in the scene layout.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the selected YouTube stream. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it and update OBS.
- The preview or audio is wrong: Test the full setup before the event. Check the OBS scene and audio mix, then inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room rather than assuming local OBS playback guarantees the same result on YouTube.
