How to Set OBS Bitrate for a 24/7 YouTube Stream on Indian Fiber Internet

For a 24/7 YouTube stream, choose a bitrate your connection can sustain continuously—not the highest number your fiber plan advertises. YouTube’s H.264 live-encoder recommendations are 8 Mbps for 720p30, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. In OBS, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then test the stream on your actual connection and reduce the bitrate if connection-related dropped frames appear. Leave upload capacity unused for fluctuations and other network traffic; fiber alone does not guarantee a stable all-day broadcast.

Recommended OBS bitrate by resolution and frame rate

The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest recommendations, not measurements of what a particular Indian ISP delivers. They are starting points for a stream that can sustain the selected resolution and frame rate.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate Practical consideration
720p30 8 Mbps A lower-bandwidth starting point than the listed 1080p options.
720p60 8 Mbps Use the figure for this specific resolution and frame rate, not the 1080p60 figure.
1080p30 14 Mbps Requires more sustained upload capacity than 720p30.
1080p60 17 Mbps The highest H.264 figure listed here; allow capacity beyond the video bitrate.

These values apply to H.264. YouTube publishes separate ingest recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so do not carry an H.264 bitrate over to a different codec. Check the live-encoder table for the codec your OBS encoder actually uses: YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Check whether your fiber connection has enough upload capacity

Streaming depends on sustained upstream performance, not download speed or the headline speed printed on a plan. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom and notes that a shared network can constrain a stream. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate planning. Treat both as heuristics, not guarantees: they are not two precise limits that ensure stability.

  1. Measure upload speed at the computer and on the connection you will use for the broadcast. A test result is a snapshot, not proof that the line will sustain that rate all day.
  2. Repeat the check during representative use, including times when household members or other devices are online. Account for competing uploads and network variation.
  3. Compare the observed upstream capacity with the target video bitrate, leaving meaningful spare capacity. If the margin is tight or inconsistent, choose a lower resolution or frame rate rather than setting OBS close to the best speed-test result.
  4. Run a test stream with the intended scene, representative motion, and audio. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health before relying on the configuration.

YouTube’s guidance is to have a reliable network because a connectivity disruption can break a stream: Streaming tips. The available guidance does not establish typical sustained upload speeds, data allowances, outage histories, or traffic-management policies for Indian fiber providers, so check those details with your ISP and do not assume a plan’s advertised speed is a continuous upload guarantee.

Set the bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval in OBS

OBS labels and control placement can differ by version and selected encoder. YouTube specifies the streaming recommendations; OBS identifies Settings → Output as the place to change bitrate when connection-related dropped frames occur.

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Output and locate the streaming encoder’s bitrate control. Enter the bitrate that matches your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec—or start lower if your connection’s sustained upload capacity is uncertain.
  2. Set rate control to CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends for live encoding.
  3. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. The exact control may appear in the encoder’s output settings and can vary by encoder.
  4. Apply the settings and start a private or unlisted test in YouTube Studio. Check the preview and stream-health indicators while the representative content is playing.

Do not treat a successful short test as proof of uninterrupted 24/7 performance. Network conditions and competing use can change after the test.

Troubleshoot dropped frames, buffering, and stream quality

  • OBS reports connection-related dropped frames: The connection may not be sustaining the configured bitrate. Lower it in Settings → Output, then test again. If necessary, step down in resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding recommendation for your codec.
  • The speed test looks good but the stream is unstable: The test may not reflect sustained upload performance or shared network use. Measure and test during representative conditions, reduce the bitrate to restore headroom, and check YouTube’s stream health.
  • The image looks poor at the recommended bitrate: Confirm that the selected figure matches the output resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s figures are codec-specific; an H.264 recommendation is not automatically correct for AV1 or H.265.
  • Viewers do not need to interact in real time: Lower latency may not be useful for a passive 24/7 program. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering; choose a latency mode with that trade-off in mind: YouTube streaming tips.
  • The stream ends after an internet or service interruption: A 24/7 setup needs a recovery plan as well as a bitrate plan. A local computer and connection can fail, so consider how quickly you can restart OBS and restore the broadcast.

Plan separately for a 24/7 archive

Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy of a continuous broadcast. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local archive backup: Archive live streams. If preserving the program matters, arrange independent recording and storage. The cited guidance does not establish a particular way to split or seamlessly archive a long broadcast.

Protect the channel and the content you stream

A technically stable stream does not settle whether you have the right to broadcast its contents. Use video, music, images, and other material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before leaving a program live for extended periods. Repeated or reused material is also subject to YouTube’s channel policies; bitrate settings do not make content eligible for monetization or exempt it from policy review. For a practical pre-stream rights review, use the copyright safety checklist.
