To keep a robot vacuum out of a particular spot, use the map controls in its app to add a no-go zone, virtual wall, or similarly named boundary. For a combo vacuum-mop, choose a no-mop zone instead if you want it to vacuum there but not mop. Edge cleaning is model-dependent: it may be a dedicated app toggle, part of a cleaning mode, or not exposed as a separate control. Start with your exact robot model and a saved, up-to-date map; app labels and available features vary.
Before you add a zone, check the map
Map-based boundaries depend on the robot having a saved map that accurately reflects your home. Check the robot’s model-specific instructions and make sure map saving is enabled if required. For example, Roborock’s S4 requires Map Saving to be switched on before you can use virtual no-go zones.

If the app has no saved map, or the map no longer matches the room layout, update or recreate it before drawing boundaries. A zone placed on an inaccurate map may not cover the real area you intend to exclude.

Open the robot’s map or map-editing screen and look for the manufacturer’s term for an exclusion area. Depending on the brand, it may be called a No-Go Zone, Keep-Out Zone, forbidden area, Virtual Wall, or Invisible Wall. The exact path and available boundary types differ by model and app version.

Example: Roborock S4 in the Mi Home app
- Enable Map Saving in the Mi Home app.
- Return to the map screen and select Edit Map.
- Choose No Go Zone, then add a zone.
- Resize or move the zone so it covers the area you want the robot to avoid, then save.
Roborock’s S4 support tutorial says this interface allows up to 10 No Go Zones. That limit applies to the S4 instructions, not to robot vacuums generally. The S4 flow also describes adding and positioning a Virtual Wall before saving.
Other app labels and flows
Dreame’s guide directs users to select the robot, open its device page, choose No-Go Zone/Virtual Wall, select the relevant area on the map, and confirm. Your app may use different labels or place these controls elsewhere, so use the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming another brand’s steps will match.
After saving, review the map to confirm the restriction covers the intended area. Check any model-specific limits on the number or shape of zones, as well as whether the settings persist between cleaning runs.

- No-mop zone: allows vacuuming while preventing mopping, according to Dreame’s app guide.
Terminology and behavior are not guaranteed to match across manufacturers. Check what the selected boundary does on your own model before saving it, especially if you want vacuuming to continue in that area.
Find the edge-cleaning control—or its equivalent
There is no universal edge-cleaning setting. Some robots expose a separate toggle; others include wall and corner coverage in a cleaning mode or route.
Xiaomi S20: a dedicated app toggle
Xiaomi’s S20 FAQ says to open the Mi Home/Xiaomi Home app, select the device card, tap the three-dot menu in the upper corner, and turn on Clean up along the edges. Xiaomi says the robot identifies the cleaning area, follows its edge, and returns to the charging dock after cleaning. This is an S20-specific instruction; check your model’s app for the same control before looking for it.
Selected Roomba 900-series models: Edge Clean preference
iRobot documents an Edge Clean setting for selected Roomba 900-series robots. Its support material says the mode cleans along room edges, including around chair legs and other furniture. The setting is on by default in the described case; disabling it can make cleaning quicker, but iRobot warns that the robot may not cover the entire floor. Its cleaning-preference overview names the 980 and 960 for the documented preference. Do not assume this legacy control exists on other Roomba models.

LG: edge coverage can depend on the cleaning mode
LG’s support page contrasts Zigzag mode, which is faster because it does not spend time cleaning corners or walls, with Perfect cleaning mode, which includes walls and edges. LG notes that modes and app images may differ by model. If you do not see an edge toggle, check the mode descriptions for your robot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use app zones as safety barriers
An in-app boundary is a cleaning-area setting, not a physical barrier. Roborock’s S4 manual cautions: “Virtual no-go zones and barriers should only be used to customize the cleaning area. It should not be used to isolate hazards.” Do not rely on a mapped zone to keep the robot away from a dangerous area.
Roborock also warns that manually moving the S4 or making significant changes to the home environment may cause saved zones or barriers to be lost. Review the map and restrictions after moving the robot or substantially changing the layout.
Compatibility matters for physical boundary accessories, too. Roborock says its Q7 Max does not recognize a magnetic strip and directs users to set an Invisible Wall or No-Go Zone in the app instead. Do not assume a magnetic strip or other accessory will work with a particular model without checking its manufacturer guidance.
What to compare when choosing a robot vacuum
If exclusion zones and edge coverage matter to you, check the exact model’s official specifications and support instructions for these features:
Quick Recap
- Map support: whether it saves maps and whether a setting such as Map Saving must be enabled before zones work.
- Boundary types: whether it offers full no-go zones, no-mop zones, virtual walls, or another restriction—and what each one actually prevents.
- Editing and persistence: what map changes the app supports, whether zones persist between cleaning runs, and any published limit on their number.
- Edge behavior: whether edge coverage is a toggle, a cleaning mode, or part of the standard route.
- Coverage trade-offs: whether a faster route or disabled edge pass can leave walls, corners, or other floor areas uncovered.
- Model and app compatibility: whether the instructions apply to your model, region, and app version.
