How to Set Nintendo Switch Parental Controls for Game Downloads and Playtime

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

The short version: use the Nintendo Switch console or the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to restrict game content, communication features and playtime. Use Nintendo Account settings separately when you need to limit eShop viewing or purchases for a supervised account. These controls are not interchangeable, and the console/app restrictions apply to the entire Switch system rather than to one user profile.

That distinction answers the two questions most families have: Are the games appropriate for my family? and How much time does my family spend gaming? Set the console around the youngest person who uses it, then manage eShop activity at the account level.

Choose the right Nintendo control first

Nintendo provides three related but separate control surfaces. Selecting the wrong one is the most common reason a setting appears not to work.

Nintendo describes the smart-device app as providing the most restriction options and features. The app is listed for iOS and Android smart devices, but its version number and menu wording can change, so compare the labels on your current installation with Nintendo’s current app listing.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Before you begin

  • Identify the console. These instructions are for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch 2 has a different support environment and should not be assumed to expose identical menus or features.
  • Decide whose age rating should govern. Because restrictions are system-wide, use the youngest regular player as the baseline unless you are prepared to change the setting whenever children share the console.
  • Confirm your region. Age-rating organizations differ by market. Nintendo’s setup flow uses the rating organization appropriate to the region, with ESRB and PEGI as examples. Do not select a rating system from another country simply because its labels are familiar.
  • Prepare a parent or guardian Nintendo Account. eShop restrictions are account settings for a supervised account, not a toggle in the console’s playtime menu.
  • Install the official parental-controls app if you need schedules, history or remote management. Nintendo lists iOS and Android compatibility. As of Nintendo’s support information dated September 14, 2026, the listed app version is 2.6.0; check the live listing for a newer release before following version-specific screens.

Set basic restrictions on the Switch console

The console can establish the core profile without a phone. The app is preferable when you need schedules, gameplay history or the widest set of options, but the console route is useful for an immediate age-based restriction.

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Choose Parental Controls.
  3. Follow the on-screen setup to create or connect the parental-controls profile and set its security credentials.
  4. Choose the age or restriction level that matches the youngest player and the rating organization shown for your region.
  5. Review the available feature restrictions, including communication-related controls, before saving.

Menu names can differ slightly by system software version and region. If a setting described in the app is not visible on the console, that does not necessarily indicate a fault; Nintendo says the app exposes additional options.

Connect and configure the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app

The app is the control center for playtime limits, bedtime schedules, gameplay history and additional restriction choices. Pair it with the Switch that the family uses, then make changes from the parent or guardian’s smart device.

Pair the app with the console

  1. Install the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app from the iOS or Android store used by your device.
  2. Sign in with the parent or guardian Nintendo Account when the app requests it.
  3. On the Switch, open System Settings > Parental Controls and choose the option to connect or set up the smart-device app.
  4. Enter or confirm the pairing code shown by the app and console.
  5. Verify that the app is displaying the intended Switch before changing restrictions. This matters in households with more than one console.

Nintendo’s 2026 support information also describes shared parental controls, allowing two parents or guardians to monitor and manage settings from their respective devices. Availability and exact sharing prompts can change with app releases, so use the current labels shown during setup.

Set an age-based software restriction

  1. Open the paired console in the app and go to the restriction settings.
  2. Select the age category or restriction level offered for your region.
  3. Check the rating organization displayed by the app. ESRB categories, for example, should not be treated as universal substitutes for PEGI or another local system.
  4. Save the setting and test it with a game that falls above the chosen level, if you need to confirm the restriction before handing the console to a child.

Age restrictions are the broadest way to control game access because they use the rating information attached to software. They are not a per-user setting: every profile on that Switch is subject to the system’s restriction.

  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer

Allow a particular game when the age setting is otherwise restrictive

Nintendo’s app supports selected-game exemptions from the restricted-software setting. Use this when an individual title is appropriate for your family even though its rating would otherwise be blocked.

  1. Open the app’s restricted-software or approved-software area.
  2. Find the game you want to permit and add it to the selected-game allowance.
  3. Save the change and confirm that the title appears in the approved list.

An allowance does not turn the console into a per-user system. It changes the system’s treatment of that selected title for anyone using the console, so review the list whenever the household’s needs change.

Set daily playtime, day-by-day schedules and bedtime

Playtime controls are managed in the app. Nintendo describes a range from no limit through six hours per day, plus day-by-day variation and a bedtime setting.

Choose a daily limit

  1. Open the paired Switch in the parental-controls app.
  2. Open the playtime or time-limit settings.
  3. Choose a daily allowance from no limit to six hours.
  4. Save the schedule and check that the displayed day and time zone match the household’s expectations.

The limit is a setting for the console, not a separate allowance for each Nintendo Switch user. If several children share one system, their play contributes to the same daily total.

Vary the allowance by day

Use the day-by-day option when weekdays, weekends or school holidays need different limits. Set each day’s allowance individually rather than relying on one weekly number. Review the schedule after a time-zone change or a major holiday, because the app’s interpretation of the current day controls which allowance is active.

  • The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
  • Model number HAC 001( 01)

Add a bedtime

A bedtime creates a second boundary. If both a daily limit and bedtime are enabled, Nintendo says the earlier limit takes effect. For example, if the remaining daily allowance ends at 8:30 p.m. but bedtime is set for 8 p.m., the earlier 8 p.m. boundary wins. The same rule applies in the opposite direction: a shorter remaining daily allowance can end play before the bedtime clock.

Decide what happens when time expires

The app lets the parent choose between two enforcement behaviors:

  • Show a notification: the system warns that the scheduled time has been reached, while the parent remains responsible for ending play.
  • Suspend software: the game is suspended when the limit is reached, providing a stricter stop.

Choose notification mode when a child needs a transition warning or when an adult is always present. Choose suspension when the limit must be enforced consistently without relying on someone noticing an alert.

Handle an occasional exception

Nintendo describes temporary extensions and the ability to disable the limit for the day. Use those controls for a planned exception rather than permanently raising the normal schedule. After the exception, check that the regular schedule is still enabled for the next day.

Control game downloads and eShop access correctly

Game downloads involve two different questions: whether a title can be viewed or purchased through the eShop, and whether a parent should be told that something was downloaded. Nintendo documents these separately.

Restrict eShop viewing or purchases

  1. Sign in to the parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account.
  2. Open the family or supervised-account settings for the child account.
  3. Adjust the eShop viewing and purchase restrictions available for that supervised account.
  4. Save the account-level changes and test the supervised account rather than the parent account.

The exact labels and account path can vary by region and Nintendo Account layout. The important boundary is stable: eShop restrictions are managed in Nintendo Account settings, not in the Switch’s playtime menu. A console age restriction and an account purchase restriction can therefore both be relevant, but changing one does not automatically change the other.

Turn on download notifications

Nintendo says the parental-controls app can notify a parent when a new game is downloaded. Enable notifications in the app and in the smart device’s operating-system notification settings, then confirm that the correct console and parent device are paired.

A notification is an alert after a download. It is not evidence of a universal approval-before-download workflow. Do not promise that every download will pause for parental approval unless Nintendo explicitly documents that behavior for the relevant account, region and current software.

Understand what these controls do not cover

  • A playtime limit does not set a spending limit in the eShop.
  • An eShop purchase restriction does not create a bedtime or daily gaming schedule.
  • A download notification does not, by itself, block the download.
  • A console-level restriction applies to all users on that Switch, while an eShop restriction is tied to the supervised Nintendo Account.

Account for a shared family console

Nintendo’s support guide states: "Parental controls are set for the system, not each individual user." That single sentence has practical consequences:

  • Choose the profile around the youngest regular player.
  • Expect the same software and communication restrictions for adults and older children using that console.
  • Use selected-game allowances sparingly, because an allowed title is available on the system rather than only to one child.
  • Track total playtime across the console, not as a separate allowance for each profile.
  • If children need genuinely different rules, consider whether separate systems are the only workable arrangement; changing the system profile repeatedly can undermine consistent enforcement.

Check communication and other feature restrictions

The app and console setup expose more than age ratings. Nintendo’s app information includes communication controls, so review those options during the initial setup rather than assuming that an age setting covers every social feature. The available controls and wording can vary by region and software version.

Nintendo Switch – Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

Use the app’s gameplay history to see how the console’s time is being used. History can help identify whether a limit is realistic, but it does not replace the account-level eShop settings or the system-wide nature of the restrictions.

Troubleshoot the settings that most often cause confusion

The eShop restriction appears to do nothing

Check that you changed the supervised account’s Nintendo Account settings, not only the Switch’s Parental Controls menu. Also confirm that the child is using the supervised account whose settings you edited. A parent account can still show access that is unavailable to the supervised account.

The app shows different age categories than expected

Review the region and rating organization selected during setup. Nintendo’s flow is designed to use the local rating body; ESRB and PEGI are examples, not interchangeable global standards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A child can still play after the scheduled time

Open the app and check whether the setting is in notification mode rather than suspension mode. Confirm that the correct Switch is paired and that the daily schedule, day of week and bedtime are current. If both a daily limit and bedtime are active, remember that the earlier boundary controls.

The app does not show a download alert

Verify three separate things: the console is paired to the intended parent device, app notifications are enabled on the phone, and the download occurred on the console covered by that pairing. The documented feature is notification of a new download; it is not a guarantee that every store event will be held for approval.

The app’s screens do not match these instructions

Nintendo can revise app labels and features. Check the current app release and support documentation, especially if the device is running an older version. Nintendo’s listed version 2.6.0 was released September 14, 2026, and later releases may move controls or add options.

A practical setup sequence for parents

  1. Decide which person is the youngest regular player and use that age as the system baseline.
  2. Set the regional age-rating restriction on the console or in the app.
  3. Add any selected-game allowances that the family has deliberately approved.
  4. Set a daily playtime allowance in the app, varying it by day if necessary.
  5. Add a bedtime and check which of the two limits will end play first.
  6. Choose notification or suspension behavior based on how directly the limit must be enforced.
  7. Review communication-related restrictions in the app.
  8. Open Nintendo Account settings for each supervised account and configure eShop viewing and purchase restrictions.
  9. Enable app and phone notifications for new-download alerts.
  10. Test the arrangement with the child account and one restricted title before relying on it.
  11. Revisit the settings after an app update, a change of region, a new child joining the console or a change in household schedule.

What to verify before handing over the console

  • The correct Switch is paired in the parent or guardian’s app.
  • The rating organization matches the family’s country or region.
  • The age restriction reflects the youngest regular player.
  • Any selected-game exemption is intentional and understood by every caregiver.
  • The daily allowance, day-by-day variations and bedtime are all saved.
  • The enforcement mode is either notification or suspension, as intended.
  • Each supervised Nintendo Account has the desired eShop viewing and purchase restrictions.
  • Download notifications work on the parent device.
  • Every caregiver knows that the restrictions apply to the whole console, not only one user profile.
