Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn a thin crypto market, use a limit order to define the worst execution price you will accept, then size the order against the pair’s live bid–ask spread and displayed depth. A buy limit can fill only at its limit price or lower; a sell limit can fill only at its limit price or higher. That price boundary can prevent an unexpectedly bad fill, but it cannot guarantee that the order will execute or complete.
The practical method is to inspect the exact order book, choose a price and quantity that fit the available liquidity, select post-only and time-in-force settings deliberately, and verify the resulting fills. The procedure below applies to centralized exchange order books; decentralized swaps and automated-market-maker pools use different mechanics.

What slippage means in a thin market
Slippage is the difference between the price you expected when submitting an order and the prices at which it actually fills. In a liquid market, enough resting orders may exist near the current quote that a modest trade changes the price very little. In a thin market, the displayed quantity at the best bid or ask may be small. An order that consumes that quantity then reaches progressively worse price levels.
The bid is the highest displayed price a buyer is currently offering; the ask is the lowest displayed price a seller is currently offering. The spread is the gap between them. Depth refers to the cumulative quantity available at successive prices on either side of the book. A narrow spread does not by itself prove that a large order can execute efficiently: the book may become shallow immediately beyond the best quote.

Order-book depth is a changing snapshot, not a promise. Other traders can cancel or replace orders, new orders can arrive, and prices can move while your instruction is being transmitted. Recheck the book immediately before submitting and treat every displayed quantity as conditional.
What a limit order guarantees—and what it does not
Price protection
A limit order sets the boundary for eligible executions. For a buy, enter the highest price you are willing to pay. Fills can occur at that price or at a lower price. For a sell, enter the lowest price you are willing to accept. Fills can occur at that price or at a higher price.
Coinbase Markets Trading Rules, section 1.32, states: “A Limit Order will only Fill at the specified price or a better price.” The phrase “better price” is directional: lower is better for a buyer, while higher is better for a seller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A limit order can remain open indefinitely, expire under its selected time-in-force, or fill only in part. If the market never reaches your price, no execution occurs. If only part of your requested quantity is available at eligible prices, the remainder waits or is cancelled according to the order instructions.
This is the central trade-off. A market order prioritizes execution and can consume several price levels, while a limit order prioritizes a price boundary and accepts the possibility of delay or non-execution. A more aggressive limit may execute sooner; a more passive limit may protect price more strictly but wait longer.
Costs beyond the limit price
A limit price does not remove trading fees, funding costs, or other venue charges. Fee schedules depend on the exchange, account, product, and region. Whether a fill receives maker or taker treatment is also venue-specific; an immediately matched limit can take liquidity unless a post-only instruction prevents that.
Read the exact pair’s order book before choosing a price
Confirm the market and product
First verify the exchange, symbol, quote currency, and product type. Make sure the order is for the intended spot or derivatives market. The same asset can have different liquidity, tick sizes, and rules across pairs and products. This guide does not prescribe leverage or position size for derivatives.

Record the best bid, best ask, and spread
Identify the highest bid and lowest ask shown at the moment you are preparing the order. The distance between them tells you how much price separation exists before considering the size of your trade. A wide spread means that crossing from one side to the other may impose a meaningful execution cost even before deeper levels are consumed.
Inspect cumulative depth
Do not look only at the first quoted level. Add the quantities available at successive bids or asks near the prices you might accept. For a buy, examine how much is offered at or below your maximum price. For a sell, examine how much is bid at or above your minimum price. Compare that cumulative amount with your intended quantity.

If your order is larger than the displayed quantity within your acceptable range, a single limit instruction cannot create liquidity that is not there. You must either reduce the quantity, widen the acceptable price boundary, wait for more liquidity, or accept that the order may be partially filled.
Recheck immediately before submission
The book can change between your inspection and the exchange receiving the order. Refresh the display, confirm the spread and nearby depth again, and then submit. A depth chart or percentage estimate from an earlier moment is not a substitute for the current book for the exact pair.

Choose a meaningful limit price
Set the buyer’s maximum or seller’s minimum
For a buy, ask yourself: “What is the highest price at which this purchase still fits my plan?” Enter that as the limit, subject to the venue’s tick-size rules. For a sell, ask: “What is the lowest net price I am willing to accept?” Enter that minimum, again respecting the exchange’s permitted increments.
There is no universal percentage offset that works across thin crypto markets. The appropriate distance from the current quote depends on the pair, your quantity, volatility, tick size, spread, available depth, and urgency. A fixed rule such as always placing a certain percentage below the ask can be too passive in one market and unnecessarily expensive in another.
Understand crossing prices
A limit order does not automatically mean “resting.” If a buy limit is at or above an available ask, eligible quantity may match immediately. If a sell limit is at or below an available bid, it may also match immediately. The order remains price-protected, but it can take existing liquidity and may receive the venue’s taker treatment.
If your objective is to wait for the market rather than trade immediately, place the order on the non-crossing side of the book or use post-only where supported. If your objective is faster execution, a more aggressive limit can be appropriate, provided its boundary remains acceptable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use post-only when you need a resting order
Post-only tells the exchange not to execute the order immediately. If any portion would match existing liquidity, the venue may reject or cancel the instruction instead of allowing it to take liquidity. This can help you maintain a passive execution plan, but it introduces another way to miss the trade.
Venue behavior differs
On the cited Coinbase Advanced Trade help page, a post-only order is rejected if any part would execute immediately. Kraken’s cited exchange rules say a post-only order is cancelled when its price would immediately match. Those outcomes are similar in purpose but not interchangeable in every interface, so read the current rules for the selected venue before relying on the setting.
Post-only is not a fill guarantee
A post-only order can be rejected because the market moved across your price during submission. If accepted, it can sit unfilled while other orders trade ahead of it or while liquidity disappears. Post-only also does not establish a universal maker fee: fee treatment and schedules remain exchange- and account-specific.

Choose the order’s lifetime deliberately
Time in force determines how long an order can wait and what happens to any unfilled remainder. Names and availability vary by exchange, so confirm the exact label and behavior in the order ticket.
| Instruction | How it handles waiting | When it may fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good-till-cancelled (GTC) | Remains open until it fills, is cancelled, or reaches a venue-specific limit. | When you are willing to monitor a resting order without a predetermined expiry. | An old price can become inappropriate as the market changes; an open order requires ongoing review. |
| Good-till-time or good-till-date (GTT/GTD) | Remains open until a specified time or date, then expires if unfilled. | When the opportunity is valid only during a defined window. | Terminology, maximum duration, and timestamp rules differ by platform. |
| Immediate-or-cancel (IOC) | Executes eligible quantity immediately and cancels the remainder. | When you want any available fill now but do not want an order left resting. | It can produce a partial fill and cancel the rest; it does not wait for later liquidity. |
The cited Coinbase documentation lists GTC, good-till-time, and IOC. The cited Kraken rules describe GTC, IOC, and good-till-date. The availability of each option can vary by market and geography.
Size the order against available liquidity
Match quantity to cumulative depth
Use the cumulative quantity within your acceptable price range as a constraint, not as a promise. If the amount you want exceeds that displayed quantity, a complete fill at your boundary is unlikely unless additional orders arrive. Reducing the order makes each instruction less exposed, but it does not change the market’s underlying liquidity.
Consider partial fills explicitly
Decide in advance whether a partial fill is useful. For an IOC order, the remainder is cancelled. For a resting GTC or GTT/GTD order, the remainder can stay open until it fills, expires, or you cancel it. If your strategy requires an all-or-nothing outcome, verify whether the venue offers an appropriate instruction; the cited material does not establish a universal all-or-none option.
Do not treat splitting as a guarantee
Sending several smaller orders can reduce the quantity exposed at one time, but it is not a proven slippage-reduction formula. Liquidity can change between submissions, later orders can face a different spread, and repeated decisions can leave you with an unintended average price or incomplete position. Treat every slice as a separate order with its own price, lifetime, and cancellation decision.

- Select the intended venue and market. Confirm the exchange account, exact pair, quote currency, and spot or derivatives product before opening the order ticket.
- Choose the side. Decide whether you are buying or selling. A buy requires a maximum acceptable price; a sell requires a minimum acceptable price.
- Inspect the live book. Note the best bid, best ask, spread, and cumulative displayed quantities near the prices you could accept. Refresh the book just before submission.
- Set the quantity. Compare the requested amount with displayed depth and your own risk limits. If the amount is large relative to nearby liquidity, consider reducing it, accepting a possible partial fill, or waiting rather than assuming a limit order will solve the problem.
- Enter the price boundary. Set the buy limit at or below your maximum, or the sell limit at or above your minimum. Check the tick size and decimal precision required by the venue.
- Decide whether the order may take liquidity. Leave post-only off only if immediate matching is acceptable. Enable post-only when the order must rest, and understand that the exchange may reject or cancel it if it would cross.
- Select time in force. Choose GTC, GTT/GTD, or IOC based on how long you are willing to wait and what should happen to any unfilled remainder.
- Review every field. Recheck side, pair, product, price, quantity, post-only status, and time-in-force selection. A correct price on the wrong market is still a wrong order.
- Submit and verify. After submission, inspect the exchange’s order-status and fill records. Confirm whether the order is open, partially filled, filled, rejected, or cancelled.
- Amend or cancel deliberately. If the market, your plan, or the available depth has changed, reassess before changing the order. Cancelling and replacing can alter queue position and may leave you exposed to a different price.
Compare execution choices before submitting
| Choice | Price certainty | Fill speed and certainty | Liquidity role | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passive limit, possibly post-only | Strong boundary: buy no higher than the limit or sell no lower. | May wait, remain partially filled, or be rejected if post-only would cross. | Usually adds liquidity if it rests. | Better control of price in exchange for uncertain completion. |
| Non-post-only limit that crosses | Still cannot execute beyond the stated limit. | Can match immediately, subject to available quantity. | Can take displayed liquidity. | Faster execution may come with taker treatment and fills across eligible levels. |
| Market order | No fixed worst price in the order itself. | Prioritizes execution but may sweep several levels in a thin book. | Takes available liquidity. | Greater completion certainty with greater exposure to price movement and slippage. |
| IOC limit | Price-protected up to the limit. | Immediate eligible fill only; remainder cancels. | Can take liquidity immediately. | Useful for a bounded immediate attempt, but partial execution is possible. |
The right choice depends on whether price, completion, speed, or avoiding an open order is most important. No setting simultaneously guarantees the limit price, a complete fill, immediate execution, and maker treatment.

Assuming “limit” means “will fill”
Symptom: The order remains open while the market moves away.
Correction: Decide whether waiting is acceptable before submitting. If execution is essential, recognize that changing to a more aggressive limit or a market order trades away some price control.
Looking only at the best quote
Symptom: The first displayed ask or bid appears adequate, but the order receives only a small fill or a worse average than expected.

Using a fixed percentage offset everywhere
Symptom: The same offset is too passive in one pair and unnecessarily expensive in another.
Correction: Base the boundary on the current spread, depth, volatility, tick size, size, and urgency of that particular market. There is no universal offset established here.
Crossing unintentionally
Symptom: A supposedly resting order fills immediately.
Correction: Compare the entered price with the opposing quote. Use post-only when immediate matching is unacceptable, and verify how the venue handles a crossing post-only order.
Leaving stale GTC orders unattended
Symptom: An old order fills after the market regime or your objective has changed.
Correction: Set a review time, use GTT/GTD when the opportunity has a deadline, or cancel an order that no longer fits your plan.
Expecting slicing to improve every result
Symptom: Several smaller orders face worsening liquidity or leave the intended position incomplete.
Correction: Evaluate each slice separately. Record the remaining quantity, current depth, and acceptable boundary before sending another order; do not assume the next slice will receive the same price.
Best Value
Ignoring product and venue differences
Symptom: A setting appears to behave differently from what you expected.
Correction: Read the current rules for that exchange, market, and region. Interfaces, supported time-in-force choices, post-only behavior, fee schedules, and available markets can change.
After the order: monitor fills and exposure
Use the exchange’s order-status view rather than relying on a confirmation sound or a disappearing ticket. Check the executed quantity, remaining quantity, execution prices, and current status. A partial fill can change your exposure even though the order is still open.
If the market moves, reassess rather than automatically chasing it. Replacing a passive order with a more aggressive one may improve completion but changes the price decision. Cancelling may protect you from an unwanted future fill but can also remove your queue position. Make the change only when it matches your predefined priority: price boundary, completion, deadline, or risk limit.
Keep the order’s product and side visible while reviewing fills. Spot and derivatives positions have different consequences, and this method does not determine leverage, margin, or position sizing.
How thin markets change the decision
Thinness magnifies the importance of size relative to depth. When the spread is wide or the book is shallow, the top quote says little about the price available for your full quantity. Volatility can also move the market through your limit before the order arrives, causing a rejection under post-only or leaving a passive order behind.
That does not make a limit order useless. It makes the limit a decision boundary rather than a prediction. You are specifying the worst eligible price and accepting that the market may provide fewer units, provide them later, or provide none.

Centralized order books versus decentralized swaps
The workflow above concerns centralized exchanges with visible bids, asks, cumulative depth, and exchange-managed order instructions. Decentralized swaps and automated-market-maker pools quote through different mechanisms. They may use pool reserves, routing, and a slippage-tolerance parameter rather than a traditional resting limit order book.
The cited material does not establish venue-specific slippage-tolerance controls or execution rules for decentralized systems. Do not transfer the post-only, GTC, GTT/GTD, or IOC descriptions to a decentralized protocol without checking that protocol’s documentation.
