On Hyperliquid, choose the perpetual asset, select Long or Short, choose Cross or Isolated margin when available, set an integer leverage value within that asset’s limit, and place the order. After the position opens, add a position take-profit/stop-loss (TP/SL) with a trigger price based on the mark price. Choose stop-market when completing the exit is more important than the exact fill, or stop-limit when you need a price boundary and accept that the order may remain unfilled.
Leverage does not set your acceptable loss by itself. It changes the collateral required for a position and how close liquidation may be. A stop order is also not a guaranteed execution price: market stops can slip, while limit stops can fail to fill during a fast move.

What leverage controls on Hyperliquid
Leverage lets a position control a larger notional amount than the collateral committed to its initial margin. Hyperliquid allows a user to choose any whole-number leverage from 1 up to the maximum for that specific asset. The perpetual-assets documentation reports maximums ranging from 3x to 40x, so there is no single platform-wide limit.
The app’s onboarding guidance expresses the relationship as Position size = your leverage amount * your collateral. Hyperliquid’s documented initial-margin formula is initial margin = position_size * mark_price / leverage. In practical terms, increasing leverage reduces the initial margin assigned to a given notional position. That also leaves less room for an adverse move before liquidation; this is an inference from the formula and the maintenance-margin rules, not a promise about any particular asset.

Cross and isolated margin
| Margin mode | How collateral is treated | When it is useful | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross | Collateral is shared across your cross-margin positions. | When you want the account’s available collateral to support positions collectively. | A losing position can consume collateral that would otherwise remain available for other cross positions. |
| Isolated | Collateral is confined to the selected asset and position. | When you want a position’s collateral exposure separated from other trades. | Adding or removing isolated margin after opening is subject to platform restrictions. |
Cross is the default according to Hyperliquid’s documentation. The asset selector determines whether isolated mode is available, so confirm the mode shown in the live trading interface before placing the order.
Check these items before placing a leveraged trade
- Asset maximum: Open the live perpetual-asset selector and verify the current maximum leverage. The 3x–40x range is a documented platform range, not a guarantee for every market today.
- Margin mode: Confirm that the order ticket says Cross or Isolated as intended. A change in margin mode changes which collateral can absorb losses.
- Position size: Decide the notional size first, then choose leverage that leaves enough collateral for normal price movement and fees.
- Liquidation distance: Estimate where maintenance-margin rules could force a liquidation and plan the stop before that level.
- Liquidity and spread: A stop’s eventual fill depends on available bids or offers. Thin liquidity and volatile markets can create a large difference between trigger and execution.
- Trigger reference: Hyperliquid TP/SL orders use mark price, not simply the last trade or an order-book quote.
How to set leverage in the Hyperliquid app
- Select the market. In the trading app, choose the token’s perpetual market. Read the current maximum leverage shown for that asset.
- Choose direction. Select Long if you expect the position to benefit from a rise, or Short if you expect it to benefit from a fall.
- Choose margin mode. Select Cross or Isolated if the market offers both. Check the selected mode again before submitting.
- Enter a whole-number leverage value. Hyperliquid accepts an integer from 1 through the asset’s maximum. A value above that market’s limit will be rejected or unavailable.
- Set the position size. Use the size slider or type the size in the order ticket. Do not assume that selecting a high leverage value automatically makes the trade appropriate for your account; leverage and position size are separate decisions.
- Review the order preview. Check direction, margin mode, leverage, estimated margin, and the displayed liquidation information if provided. Make sure the collateral amount is available in the selected margin pool.
- Click Place Order. Wait for confirmation that the order has opened or that an entry order is resting. A pending entry is not the same as an open position with an active position stop.
Illustrative sizing example
Suppose a trader allocates 500 units of collateral and selects 5x leverage. The onboarding relationship would describe the resulting position-size capacity as 5 multiplied by 500, or 2,500 units of notional exposure, before considering the market’s contract conventions, fees, and available margin. If the same notional is assigned 10x leverage, the documented initial-margin formula implies less initial margin is required, but the position has less tolerance for an adverse move before maintenance margin is reached. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a recommendation for 5x or 10x.
How to add a stop-loss after the position opens
- Open the position controls. Use the position form, the order form, or the TradingView chart’s trading controls to start a TP/SL order.
- Choose stop-loss. Select the stop-loss side that closes the existing position. A long is closed by selling; a short is closed by buying.
- Enter the trigger price. Hyperliquid evaluates TP/SL triggers with the mark price. For a long stop, triggering occurs when mark price falls below the trigger. For a short stop, triggering occurs when mark price rises above the trigger.
- Select execution type. Choose a market stop for an order that becomes a market exit after the trigger, or a limit stop to specify the least acceptable execution price for the exit.
- Confirm the quantity. A position TP/SL defaults to the full position. If you enter a fixed quantity instead, that quantity does not automatically resize if the position later becomes larger or smaller.
- Submit and verify status. Confirm that the TP/SL appears as an active order attached to the intended position. A stop that was drafted but not submitted will not protect the trade.
Long and short trigger logic
| Position | Stop-loss trigger condition | Typical exit action |
|---|---|---|
| Long | Mark price falls below the trigger price. | Sell to reduce or close the long. |
| Short | Mark price rises above the trigger price. | Buy to reduce or close the short. |
Because mark price can differ materially from the order-book price during volatility, a chart or last-trade quote can appear to be above a long stop while the mark price has already triggered it, or vice versa. Always identify which price feed you are watching.

| Order choice | What happens after the mark trigger | Main advantage | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop Market | A market TP/SL is submitted after the trigger. | Highest chance of submitting an exit when the market is moving quickly. | The fill can be worse than the trigger because of slippage. Hyperliquid documents a 10% slippage tolerance for market TP/SL orders. |
| Stop Limit | A limit order is submitted at the specified limit price after the trigger. | Defines the worst acceptable execution price for the exit. | The order can remain unfilled if price moves beyond the limit or liquidity disappears. |
| Position TP/SL | Exit instructions are attached to an existing position, normally for its full size. | Simplest workflow for a beginner managing one open position. | A fixed-size version does not resize when the position changes later. |
| Parent-order TP/SL | Exit instructions are attached to an entry order. | Can prepare exits before an entry fills. | Partially filled or canceled parent orders have special placement behavior; the resulting child-order state must be checked. |
A stop-market order prioritizes getting an exit into the market, not receiving the trigger price. The documented 10% tolerance is a parameter of market TP/SL handling; it is not a promise that every fill will be within 10% in all circumstances, nor does it remove the effects of extreme volatility, liquidity gaps, or liquidation.

Why a stop-limit can miss
Hyperliquid’s example shows a long stop with both trigger and limit at $10. If price falls from $11 to $9, the stop can trigger but the limit sell at $10 may not execute because buyers are below that limit. Setting the limit lower, such as $8, gives the order room to fill somewhere between $9 and $8 in that example. The trade-off is accepting a worse minimum price in exchange for a greater chance of execution.
How leverage relates to liquidation
Hyperliquid defines liquidation as the point at which a trader’s account equity falls below the maintenance margin. Maintenance margin is half of the initial margin at maximum leverage. The liquidation documentation gives a maintenance-margin range from 1.25% for assets with a 40x maximum leverage to 16.7% for assets with a 3x maximum leverage.
| Asset maximum leverage | Documented maintenance-margin figure | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 40x maximum | 1.25% | Lower maintenance percentage, but high leverage can make the liquidation distance small in price terms. |
| 3x maximum | 16.7% | Higher maintenance percentage and a different risk profile from a 40x market. |
| Other maximums between 3x and 40x | Asset-specific; not stated as one universal percentage. | Use the current market metadata rather than extrapolating from the endpoints. |
Liquidation is calculated with mark price. During a volatile move, mark price and the order-book price can diverge materially. A stop-loss therefore should be placed with a buffer before the estimated liquidation price, while accounting for volatility, spread, and the possibility that a limit stop will not fill. Hyperliquid’s documentation does not publish one universal buffer percentage, so the correct distance depends on the asset, position size, leverage, liquidity, and market conditions.
Do not use the liquidation price as your stop
A liquidation event is a forced risk-control action by the platform, not a planned exit. Waiting for liquidation removes your choice of order type and may consume collateral faster than expected. A planned stop should be far enough from the estimated liquidation level that normal mark-price fluctuations and execution delay do not make the stop and liquidation thresholds collide.

Choosing a leverage level without treating it as a risk limit
There is no universally “safe” leverage number. The same leverage can produce very different risks depending on the notional size, entry price, volatility, margin mode, and stop distance. Use this sequence instead of choosing a number first:
- Define the invalidation price. Identify the mark-price level at which the trade thesis is wrong.
- Measure the stop distance. Compare the entry mark price with the proposed stop trigger, in price and percentage terms.
- Choose the maximum loss you can accept. Treat this as an account-management decision, not as a feature of the leverage selector.
- Size the position to that stop. A wider stop generally requires a smaller notional position for the same acceptable loss; a tighter stop can be defeated by ordinary noise.
- Check liquidation distance. If the stop is close to the estimated liquidation price, reduce notional size or leverage, add collateral where permitted, or choose a different setup.
- Review execution conditions. In a thin or rapidly moving market, a stop-market fill may be substantially away from its trigger and a stop-limit may not fill at all.
Lowering leverage can reduce the initial margin efficiency of a trade, but it does not automatically reduce risk if the trader increases the notional position to compensate. Risk is driven by the amount exposed and the exit distance, while leverage determines how much collateral supports that exposure.
Parent-order exits and automated leverage changes
Parent-order TP/SL
Attaching TP/SL instructions to an entry order can be convenient when you want exits prepared before the position opens. Partial fills and canceled parent orders have special placement behavior in Hyperliquid’s implementation. After any partial fill, cancellation, or amendment, inspect whether the intended child TP/SL orders were actually placed and whether their quantities match the filled position. Do not assume that an attached instruction remains correct after the parent order changes.
API leverage updates
For automated trading or integration checks, Hyperliquid’s updateLeverage action takes the asset index, an isCross boolean, and an integer leverage value subject to that coin’s constraints. An integration should verify all three values: the asset index must identify the intended market, isCross must match the desired margin mode, and leverage must be within the current market limit. A successful API call should be followed by a read-back of account or position state rather than being treated as proof that a different market was not selected accidentally.

Troubleshooting common stop and leverage problems
“My stop triggered, but it filled at a different price.”
The trigger uses mark price, while execution uses available liquidity. A stop-market order becomes a market exit and can slip, with a documented 10% market TP/SL slippage tolerance. The mark price may also have moved sharply between trigger detection and matching. Check the mark-price chart, the order type, the order-book depth, and the fill history.
“My stop triggered but did not fill.”
This usually indicates a stop-limit order whose limit was too aggressive for the move. In a long exit, a limit set at or above the trigger can be left behind when bids gap lower; in a short exit, an offer can be left behind when asks gap higher. Cancel or amend only after assessing liquidation risk, and use a market stop when completion is more important than price control.
“I cannot select the leverage I want.”
Leverage is an integer and cannot exceed the selected asset’s maximum. Switch to the intended market and read its current limit; do not infer the limit from another perpetual. If an API call fails, verify the asset index, the cross/isolated flag, and the integer value against current coin constraints.
Recommended Free Tools
“The margin mode changed my available balance.”
Cross mode shares collateral among cross positions, while isolated mode confines collateral to the selected asset. Recheck which positions are cross and which are isolated. Isolated-margin adjustments after opening can be restricted, so the app may not permit every add or remove action.
Best Value
“My stop size is no longer the size of my position.”
A fixed-size position TP/SL does not resize when the position later changes. If you add to, partially close, or otherwise modify the position, review the stop quantity and replace it when necessary. A full-position TP/SL follows the position more closely, but still requires verification after major order changes.
“Liquidation happened before my stop.”
Liquidation is based on mark price and maintenance margin, not solely on the visible order-book price. The stop may have been too close to the estimated liquidation level, the mark price may have moved faster than the exit could execute, or a stop-limit may have remained unfilled. Reduce leverage or notional size, increase the distance between the planned stop and liquidation level, and use an execution method appropriate for the market’s liquidity.
Pre-trade and post-trade checklist
Before clicking Place Order
- Correct perpetual asset and current maximum leverage confirmed.
- Long or short direction checked.
- Cross or isolated mode checked.
- Whole-number leverage selected within the asset limit.
- Position size and available collateral reviewed.
- Stop trigger based on mark price and placed before estimated liquidation.
- Stop-market or stop-limit trade-off understood.
After the position opens
- Position TP/SL is visible as an active order.
- Trigger price is on the correct side of the entry for the selected direction.
- Quantity covers the intended position, especially after partial fills or later size changes.
- For a stop-limit, the limit leaves realistic room for a fast move.
- For a parent-order exit, child-order status matches the actually filled quantity.
- Mark price, order-book price, and liquidation estimate are monitored as separate values.
What to verify because platform data changes
Asset maximum leverage, margin tiers, interface labels, liquidity, and mark-price behavior can change. Before every trade, use the live asset selector and current Hyperliquid metadata rather than relying on a saved screenshot, an old tutorial, or the limits of another coin. The documented figures of 3x–40x maximum leverage, 1.25%–16.7% maintenance margin, and 10% market TP/SL slippage tolerance should be treated as documentation values that require confirmation in the current interface.
