For PHP-backed WordPress, set PHP’s upload_max_filesize for the maximum individual file and make post_max_size at least as large. In Cloudinary’s Upload Widget, use the byte-valued maxFileSize option, or maxImageFileSize for an image-specific cap. These controls operate at different layers, and a client-side cap does not replace server or account limits.
First decide what “size” means
An upload limit expressed in KB usually means the file’s encoded size in bytes. It is not the same as an image’s width and height in pixels. A 1200 × 800 image can be saved as files of different byte sizes depending on format, quality and image content. Setting a maximum width or height therefore does not guarantee that the uploaded file will be under a particular KB limit.
Also decide what your application means by KB. Decimal units use 1 KB = 1,000 bytes; binary units use 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. If a form or policy says “500 KB,” clarify which convention it uses. For a decimal 500 KB cap, the byte value is 500,000; for 500 KiB, it is 512,000. When configuring a control that takes bytes, enter the intended byte count rather than typing a number labelled “KB.”
Identify which layer enforces the limit
An upload can be checked in the browser, limited by the application or PHP runtime, constrained by the web server or host, and capped by a hosted-service account. The effective maximum is the tightest applicable limit. A message in the browser does not prove that the server will accept the file, and raising one setting cannot overcome a smaller limit elsewhere.

Set limits for PHP-backed WordPress
WordPress’s Advanced Administration Handbook says the individual-file upload limit can be configured with PHP’s upload_max_filesize directive. The total request is also constrained by post_max_size: WordPress says it must be greater than or equal to upload_max_filesize, and PHP will not process requests larger than post_max_size.
- Find the PHP configuration path supported by your host. Depending on the hosting setup, PHP settings may be managed in a host control panel or configuration file. The cited WordPress guidance establishes the directives, but not a universal location or editing procedure for every host.
- Set
upload_max_filesizeto the desired per-file maximum. For instance, a 500 KB decimal policy corresponds to 500,000 bytes. PHP configuration values are commonly written with size suffixes, but confirm the accepted syntax and value with your host rather than assuming every control panel interprets units identically. - Set
post_max_sizeto at least the same size, preferably with room for the complete request. A request can include more than the image file itself, so a request ceiling equal to the per-file cap may be restrictive. Do not set it lower thanupload_max_filesize. - Apply the change as required by the host. Some environments require a PHP worker or service restart, while managed hosts may apply changes automatically. Follow the provider’s instructions.
- Test with files on both sides of the threshold. Confirm that a file below the cap uploads and that an oversized file is rejected with a useful message. Also test the actual upload path, not only a media-library screen if users upload through a different form.
If a value is refused, ignored or absent from the interface, ask the host which PHP configuration source controls the site and whether an upstream request limit is lower. Changing application code cannot raise a limit that the hosting layer enforces first.
Set a Cloudinary Upload Widget file cap
Cloudinary’s Upload Widget offers two relevant options for local-file validation. maxFileSize is the general cap, and maxImageFileSize is an image-specific cap. Both are integers in bytes. If both are configured, maxImageFileSize overrides maxFileSize for images. Cloudinary account-side Usage Limits still apply.
Rank #2
| Option | What it caps | Value format | Behavior when both are set |
|---|---|---|---|
maxFileSize |
Local files selected in the Upload Widget | Integer bytes | General file cap; image-specific option takes precedence for images |
maxImageFileSize |
Local image files selected in the Upload Widget | Integer bytes | Overrides maxFileSize for images |
For example, Cloudinary’s documentation gives 5,500,000 bytes (5.5 MB) as an example maxFileSize value and 1,500,000 bytes (1.5 MB) as an example maxImageFileSize value. These are documentation examples, not recommendations or universal account limits.
Translate a requested KB cap into bytes before setting the option. For a decimal 500 KB image limit, the intended value is 500,000 bytes. If only images should have that limit while other local files can be larger, use the image-specific option. If all local uploads should share one cap, use the general option. Check the current Cloudinary Upload Widget documentation for the exact object location and configuration syntax for the version and integration you use; the cited facts establish the option names and behavior, not a complete widget initialization example.
This widget validation concerns local files. It does not establish the maximum Cloudinary will accept for every account or product configuration. Check the current account’s Usage Limits as well; the available guidance does not establish one universal current account ceiling.

Why resizing to pixels does not enforce a KB cap
A dimension rule such as “maximum width 1600 pixels” constrains geometry, not encoded file bytes. Resizing may reduce file size, but does not guarantee a target such as 500 KB. Cloudinary’s support response specifically cautions that dimension-based resizing cannot guarantee a particular file size.
If the requirement is a strict upload ceiling, validate the byte count itself at the upload boundary and enforce the applicable server-side or account limit. If the requirement is instead consistent display dimensions, apply a pixel constraint separately. The two policies solve different problems and may both be necessary.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnderstand chunked uploads and total limits
Cloudinary documents chunked uploads with a default chunk size of 20,000,000 bytes (20 MB), configurable as low as 5,000,000 bytes (5 MB). Chunk size governs the pieces used to transfer a large upload; it is not the maximum total file size. The allowed total depends on the product environment and account configuration.

Chunking can make a large transfer more resilient to interruptions, but it does not raise the account’s maximum asset size. If an upload fails near a total-size boundary, inspect the account’s limits rather than assuming that a smaller chunk will permit a larger asset.
Troubleshoot a limit that does not behave as expected
- WordPress rejects files smaller than the configured per-file cap: check whether
post_max_sizeis lower than the request size, and ask the host whether a web-server or hosting request ceiling is also in force. - WordPress still reports the old value: verify which PHP configuration source the host applies to the site and whether changes require a restart or another activation step. Managed hosting may prevent direct edits.
- A Cloudinary widget allows a file that should be rejected: verify that the widget configuration sets the option on the actual upload flow, uses an integer byte value, and does not set a higher image-specific override for images.
- The widget rejects the file but the service later refuses it: browser validation and account limits are separate. Check the current Cloudinary account Usage Limits and applicable product environment.
- A resized image remains above the KB target: dimensions do not guarantee encoded byte size. Enforce a byte-size rule rather than relying on width or height alone.
- A chunked upload fails for a large asset: distinguish transfer chunk size from the total asset ceiling; confirm the account’s permitted total size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does “500 KB” always mean 500,000 bytes?
No. Decimal KB is 1,000 bytes, while a binary KiB is 1,024 bytes. Confirm which convention the requirement uses before converting it to a byte value.
Will lowering image dimensions always get a file under my upload cap?
No. Pixel dimensions and encoded file size are separate; a resized image may still exceed the byte limit.
Can I set one upload maximum for every website?
No. The applicable controls depend on the platform, hosting stack and upload service, and multiple layers may impose separate limits.
