How to Set Healthy Screen-Time Limits for Kids on Social Media

There is no single daily social-media limit that works as a medical rule for every child. Set boundaries around your family’s routines, protect sleep and other important activities, and agree with your child on a plan you can review and adjust. Built-in device and app controls can help enforce it, but they work best alongside conversation—not as a substitute for it.

Start with routines, not a universal number

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends making an individualized family media plan rather than applying one screen-time ceiling to every school-age child or teen. Ask what social media is replacing: sleep, homework, exercise, reading, hobbies, meals, or time with friends and family? The impact on those routines matters alongside the minutes on a screen.

Social media can also offer connection and other benefits, as well as risks. The U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory summary notes that evidence gaps remain and says the government cannot conclude social media is sufficiently safe for children and adolescents. That is not a finding that all use is harmful, nor does it establish a number of minutes that guarantees safety. The advisory calls for a multifaceted response, of which family boundaries are one part. Read the advisory summary.

Talk with your child before setting limits

Begin with curiosity rather than an accusation. Ask what they enjoy online, how it affects their mood, whether anything there makes them uncomfortable, and what they would like more time for offline. For younger teens, regular, open-minded check-ins about online and in-person friendships can make it easier to raise concerns early.

For ages 10–14, the AAP’s “5 Cs” framework prompts caregivers to consider the child, content, calming, crowding out, and communication. In practical terms, consider your child’s needs and maturity, what they encounter online, whether they use media to manage feelings, what activities screen use displaces, and whether you can talk openly about it. The AAP advises involving young teens in choosing and putting rules into practice. See the AAP’s 5 Cs questions for young teens.

Choose a few clear boundaries to try

Pick rules that address your family’s main friction points instead of imposing every possible restriction at once. A clear context-based rule can be easier to follow than a daily time cap alone.

  • Protect meals: Keep phones and other screens away during family meals.
  • Protect sleep: Set a screen-free period before bed and keep phones out of bedrooms at night if that works for your family.
  • Reduce prompts to keep scrolling: Consider turning off autoplay and nonessential notifications.
  • Make room for attention: Agree on one screen at a time, rather than switching between multiple devices or media.
  • Set a time limit if it helps: Use a built-in device or app setting to support a limit you and your child have agreed on.

Not every rule suits every household. The goal is a workable boundary that protects the routines your family has chosen, not a long list of restrictions that no one can sustain.

Make the plan specific, mutual, and workable

Write down the agreed boundaries, when they apply, and what happens when a limit is reached. Name a replacement activity, too: reading, outdoor play, a hobby, a family game, or seeing friends. That gives the child a positive next step instead of making the plan only about stopping.

Include caregivers’ own habits. If adults use phones at meals or keep checking notifications during family time, children may reasonably see the rules as unfair. A shared plan can set expectations for everyone while giving children age-appropriate input. Expect some disagreement as a new boundary becomes familiar; consistency and follow-through help establish the routine.

The AAP’s Family Media Plan can help families consider screen-free zones and times, content, alternatives, device controls, and role modeling. The AAP notes that plans should change as children mature.

Use controls to support the agreement

Device and platform settings can help with app or site access, content, time, chat, and spending. Many devices also offer screen-time tracking. The exact options and menus vary by device, operating-system version, and app, so check the relevant settings on the device your child uses rather than relying on a single set of instructions.

Explain what a control does and why you are using it. Invite your child to show you the apps or features they use and discuss the boundary together. The AAP says controls work better alongside positive communication and relationship-building; they are tools for supporting a plan, not a replacement for trust or ongoing conversation. Read the AAP’s guidance on parental controls.

Review whether the limits are helping

After a short trial, check whether the plan is improving the things it was meant to protect. Revisit it at a school-year transition or when your child’s needs and maturity change. The timer reading is only one measure; notice the child’s day-to-day functioning too.

  • Is your child missing in-person time with friends or losing interest in other activities?
  • Do they seem unable to stop, or become persistently irritable when access ends?
  • Have mood, school performance, or relationships changed in a concerning way?

These signs do not by themselves prove that social media caused a problem. If concerns persist, discuss them with your child’s pediatrician and bring concrete examples of what you have noticed.

What the available figures can—and cannot—tell you

The Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory summary cites studies that illustrate how common teen social-media use is and why families may want to pay attention. These are figures reported in that advisory, not new prevalence measurements for 2026:

  • Up to 95% of young people ages 13–17 reported using a social-media platform, citing Vogels et al. (2022).
  • Nearly two-thirds of teenagers reported daily use, and one-third reported use “almost constantly,” citing Rideout et al. (2022).
  • Teenagers averaged 3.5 hours a day on social media in a survey, citing Miech et al. (2022).
  • More than three hours a day was associated with double the risk of certain mental-health problems, including symptoms of depression and anxiety, citing Riehm et al. (2019). This is an association reported by the advisory, not proof that time alone causes those outcomes.
  • 46% of adolescents ages 13–17 said social media made them feel worse about their body image, citing Bickham et al. (2022).

Those findings describe patterns and reported associations; they do not establish a universal safe daily limit for an individual child. Use your child’s routines, experience, and wellbeing to shape the family plan.
