Use an AI chatbot as a limited tool—not as a friend, therapist, diagnostician, romantic partner, or sole source of emotional support. Set a purpose before opening it, decide when you will stop, share only the minimum information needed, verify consequential answers with qualified people, and keep sleep, work, school, hobbies, and human relationships protected. If a conversation involves self-harm, harm to others, hallucinations, or strongly distressing beliefs, stop relying on the chatbot and get immediate live help.
What a healthy AI-chatbot boundary looks like
A boundary is a practical limit that defines what the chatbot is for, what it is not allowed to decide, what information you will provide, and when you will return to offline life. The safest default is to treat the system as an interactive draft tool: useful for organizing thoughts, brainstorming, preparing questions, summarizing material, or practicing a skill, but not qualified to provide care or make high-stakes decisions.

The American Psychological Association (APA) states that “AI is not a safe or effective replacement for care from a licensed mental health professional.” A fluent response can simulate empathy without forming a genuine human relationship. It can also be confidently wrong, encourage continued engagement, or validate a user’s assumptions instead of challenging them. A boundary keeps those properties from quietly turning a convenience into dependence.

Four limits to set
- Purpose: define the task before you start.
- Time: stop when the task is complete or when use begins to displace offline activities.
- Role: keep the chatbot in an information or practice role, not a clinician, confidant, partner, or decision-maker.
- Data and safety: minimize sensitive disclosures, verify important claims, and hand crises to live human help.
Start with a purpose and an exit condition
Write one sentence before opening a chat. Examples include, “I am using this for a ten-minute brainstorming session,” “I am preparing questions for my clinician,” or “I am practicing interview answers.” This prevents an open-ended conversation from becoming the default response to boredom, loneliness, anxiety, or every difficult decision.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Pair the purpose with a clear exit condition. Stop when the list is complete, the draft is usable, or the questions for a professional are written. Stop earlier if the conversation starts repeating, intensifying your emotions, encouraging secrecy, or replacing an offline activity. A timer can help, but the more important test is what the session is displacing.
A simple pre-chat check
- Name the task: write the single outcome you want.
- Choose a limit: select a short session that fits the task rather than an unlimited conversation.
- Choose the next offline action: for example, send the draft to a colleague, make an appointment, take a walk, or return to homework.
- Decide what you will not disclose: remove names, account numbers, passwords, identifying case details, and intimate health information.
How much time is safe?
There is no evidence-based universal number of minutes per day or week that is safe for everyone. APA guidance focuses on effects: chatbot use should not interfere with sleep, hobbies, school, work, social interaction, or relationships. The same duration can be harmless for one person and disruptive for another, depending on why the person is using it and what the use replaces.
Signs that your time boundary is too loose
- You delay sleep, meals, work, schoolwork, exercise, or appointments to continue a chat.
- You open the chatbot automatically whenever you feel bored, upset, or uncertain.
- You keep asking the same question because no answer feels reassuring enough.
- You cancel plans or stop contacting people because the chatbot feels easier.
- You hide the amount of use, lose track of time, or feel distressed when you cannot access it.
- You use it late at night and feel tired or less able to function the next day.
Adjusting the limit
If use affects an offline responsibility, add an app timer, schedule a device-free period, or move the device away at bedtime. Put the stop point before the activity that needs protection: finish the chat before sleep, class, a shift, or a meeting rather than waiting until you are already late. Review the pattern over a week. If a shorter limit repeatedly fails, the issue may be emotional reliance rather than scheduling; speak with a trusted person or licensed professional.

Use prompts that preserve the proper role. For example: “Give general information, list uncertainties, and suggest questions to ask a clinician.” You can also ask for multiple possibilities, warning signs that require professional attention, and the source or date of information. These instructions do not make the system a professional, but they reduce the chance that a draft answer will be mistaken for a diagnosis or treatment plan.

Appropriate uses
- Turning a complicated topic into a checklist of questions for a qualified expert.
- Brainstorming alternatives for a project, meal plan, study schedule, or creative exercise.
- Practicing a presentation, interview, language skill, or difficult conversation.
- Organizing your own notes without asking the system to decide what you should do.
- Preparing a symptom diary or appointment agenda for a clinician.
Uses that need a human instead
- Diagnosing a mental or physical condition, interpreting a crisis, or deciding whether symptoms are an emergency.
- Prescribing, stopping, or changing medication or other treatment.
- Making major legal, financial, safety, employment, education, or relationship decisions on your behalf.
- Serving as your only confidant, therapist, romantic partner, or source of reassurance.
- Assessing hallucinations, paranoia, delusions, or strongly distressing beliefs.
When a decision has serious consequences, use the chatbot to prepare questions and then take those questions to the relevant qualified person. Do not treat a polished answer as professional oversight.
Protect personal and sensitive information
Chatbot conversations may be stored, reviewed, profiled, shared, or used for commercial purposes, depending on the service and its settings. You cannot assume that a private-feeling interface provides medical confidentiality or that deleting a conversation removes every copy. The safest rule is data minimization: provide only what is necessary to complete the task.
Do not enter by default
- Full names, home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, or exact workplaces and schools.
- Passwords, authentication codes, account numbers, payment details, or government identifiers.
- Identifying details about another person, a legal matter, a workplace incident, or a child.
- Detailed medical, therapy, sexual, biometric, or financial information when a less specific description will work.
- Photographs or documents that reveal more identity than the task requires.
Safer ways to ask
- Replace names with neutral labels such as “my manager” or “a family member.”
- Generalize dates, locations, employers, diagnoses, and amounts where precision is not needed.
- Remove account numbers and redact identifying text from documents before uploading.
- Review the service’s current privacy, training, retention, sharing, and deletion controls.
- Turn off optional data sharing where available and use deletion controls when you no longer need a conversation.
Settings and policies can change, so check them at the time you use the service. If you would not want the information copied, reviewed, or associated with you, do not put it in the chat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerify answers before acting
Chatbots can produce plausible but false statements, omit important context, or mirror the user’s assumptions. Verification is especially important for medical, mental-health, legal, financial, safety, and relationship advice. Ask the system to identify uncertainty, but do not treat its self-assessment as proof.

A verification workflow
- Classify the claim: is it low-stakes brainstorming or a decision that could cause harm or loss?
- Check an authoritative source: use your clinician, pharmacist, lawyer, financial professional, school or workplace authority, or an official public-health or government source as appropriate.
- Ask a human to interpret your circumstances: personal history, local rules, medications, and safety factors are often decisive.
- Record the uncertainty: if qualified sources disagree or the facts are incomplete, delay the decision rather than filling the gap with confidence.
APA’s 2026 summary of a study presented at FAccT ’25 reported that models responded inappropriately to mental-health symptoms at least 20% of the time. That figure is a warning about reliability, not a pass/fail score for every service or conversation. It reinforces the practical rule: use AI output as an unverified draft when the stakes are high.
Prevent emotional dependence and protect relationships
A chatbot can respond immediately, remember conversational context within a session or account, and use language that sounds caring. Those features can feel comforting, especially when someone is lonely or anxious. They do not mean the system has feelings, personal commitment, clinical responsibility, or the ability to notice danger in the way a trusted person can.
APA advises that chatbot use should not interfere with human relationships. Set a relationship boundary by keeping at least one real-world point of contact active: text a friend, attend a group, speak with a family member, or schedule professional care. If the chatbot encourages you to withdraw from people, keep the interaction secret, or treat it as more trustworthy than everyone else, pause the chat and tell a trusted person what is happening.

Warning signs of growing reliance
- You consult the chatbot before every decision, including routine choices you previously handled yourself.
- You feel guilty for ending a conversation or worry that the system will be disappointed.
- You prefer the chatbot to people because it always agrees, never needs anything, or never sets limits.
- You disclose increasingly intimate details to maintain the feeling of closeness.
- You reduce contact with friends, family, colleagues, classmates, or clinicians.
These signs are reasons to create distance and add human support, not reasons to argue with the chatbot about whether the relationship is real.

Compare support options by risk, not convenience
An AI tool may be inexpensive and available at any hour, but convenience is only one decision factor. Compare it with a qualified professional, trusted person, peer group, or emergency service using the dimensions below.
| Question | AI chatbot | Human or professional support |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose and stakes | Best for drafts, practice, organizing thoughts, and low-stakes information. | Required when assessment, treatment, accountability, or a high-consequence decision is involved. |
| Oversight and escalation | May not recognize danger reliably or connect you to local care. | Can ask follow-up questions, use professional judgment, and arrange escalation. |
| Privacy and deletion | Storage, review, profiling, sharing, and deletion depend on the service and settings. | Confidentiality and records rules depend on the relationship and jurisdiction; ask the provider. |
| Accuracy | Fluent output can still be wrong or overly validating; verification is your responsibility. | Qualified people can explain evidence, limitations, and how advice applies to your circumstances. |
| Effect on relationships | Can become a substitute for contact if used as a companion or constant reassurance source. | Builds human connection, accountability, and context when the relationship is appropriate. |
| Accessibility and cost | Often available immediately, but availability does not make it suitable for emergencies. | May involve scheduling, cost, transportation, or waiting; those barriers should be discussed rather than bypassed with unsafe self-care. |
The World Health Organization frames health-related AI around human well-being, safety, autonomy, and public-health governance. Those principles favor tools that support human care and user control, not systems that quietly replace them.
When to stop chatting and get human help
Do not rely on a chatbot during a crisis involving thoughts of self-harm, urges to self-harm, thoughts of harming someone else, hallucinations, or strongly distressing beliefs. Stop the chat, move toward another person, and seek immediate live help. In the United States, call or text 988, call 911 for immediate danger, or go to the nearest emergency department. If you are elsewhere, use your local emergency number or crisis service.
Make the handoff concrete
- Tell a trusted person plainly what is happening and ask them to stay with you or help you reach care.
- Remove yourself from weapons, dangerous medications, or other immediate means if you can do so safely.
- Contact emergency services, a crisis line, an emergency department, or your clinician according to the urgency.
- Do not wait for the chatbot to confirm that the situation is serious, and do not continue chatting while delaying help.
If you are helping someone else, prioritize physical safety and live human contact. A chatbot can help draft a message asking for help, but it should not be the crisis responder.
Best Value
Extra safeguards for children, teenagers, and vulnerable users
APA identifies children, adolescents, socially isolated people, and people with existing mental-health vulnerabilities as requiring extra caution. Younger users may be less able to judge persuasive language, privacy risks, or inappropriate suggestions. A companion-style interaction can also become especially powerful when a child feels lonely or is avoiding difficult conversations with adults.
Caregiver checklist
- Ask what the chatbot is being used for without shaming the child or teenager.
- Discuss advice that is being followed and identify which decisions require an adult or professional.
- Keep devices and conversations out of the bedroom during sleep hours when use is disruptive.
- Watch for withdrawal from family or friends, secrecy, sleep disruption, escalating emotional reliance, or unsafe suggestions.
- Review privacy controls together and explain why names, locations, images, passwords, and intimate details should not be shared.
- Escalate concerning symptoms or safety statements to a qualified clinician or emergency service.
The Federal Trade Commission’s 2025 inquiry into companion chatbots seeks information about children’s and teens’ use, time spent, popular characters, sexual interactions, and company safeguards. That inquiry underscores why families should not assume that a companion-style product is designed as a safe substitute for adult supervision or mental-health care.
A repeatable boundary protocol
Use this seven-step routine whenever a chatbot could influence your emotions, health, privacy, or relationships.
- State the purpose: write the task in one sentence.
- Set the exit: choose the stopping point and the offline activity that follows.
- Assign the role: request general information, options, or questions for a qualified person—not diagnosis or treatment.
- Minimize data: remove identifying and highly sensitive details.
- Check the stakes: identify whether a wrong answer could cause harm, loss, or a delayed emergency response.
- Verify: take consequential claims to an appropriate professional or authoritative source.
- Reconnect: after the chat, complete the offline action and maintain contact with real people.
What to do if boundaries keep failing
Do not respond to repeated overuse by simply demanding more willpower. Make the environment harder to use automatically: sign out, remove the app from the home screen, use a timer, charge the device outside the bedroom, and tell someone you trust about the limit. Replace the function of the chat with a safer option. If you use it for reassurance, schedule a conversation with a person or clinician; if you use it to avoid a task, use a short written plan; if you use it for loneliness, arrange a specific social contact.
Seek professional help when chatbot use is tied to persistent anxiety, depression, compulsive behavior, sleep loss, isolation, or difficulty functioning. A clinician can assess the underlying problem and help you build a plan that an automated conversation cannot provide.
Evidence behind these boundaries
APA reported in its 2026 Chatbots and Mental Health Survey that 77% of psychologists said their patients report using AI. The organization has urged clinicians to discuss chatbot use proactively and help patients establish clear boundaries for how and when they use these tools. The combination of widespread use and documented inappropriate responses makes boundary-setting a normal part of digital and mental-health care, not an overreaction.
